Eh, we are paying to use the resources, that doesn't mean going to class if we feel that we can teach ourselves. Im trying it today (no biochem) and see how much I know during the review session. If I don't know **** about enzymes, there is something wrong with my undergraduate education. Now it is time to go back to my self study

I am a 3rd year. The notes for biochem are great and you can totally skip class and ace the tests. just thought you'd like to know that. Make sure you do the practice tests they give you, because they are really close to the real test.

About those review sessions...

I found them completely useless. But by all means, go to the first few & find out for yourself. For my class anyway, it always seemed like it was the same people asking stupid questions the entire time.

And about paying "sooo much money for it" - everyone says this at the beginning of the year. Then they figure out that you can skip class but use it for studying time on your own and actually take the time to learn the material and not just listen to someone read the handout. This for me is a much better utilization of time. I get the grades with the time I spend on learning the material - not the amount of money I spent on lecture time.

That is exactly how I felt when I was sitting there during the lectures while my mind was going somewhere else. This morning, I woke up, did the lesson (reviewed it twice), got back listened to the MP3's and condensed my notes and I am now free to do other things. If I understand it, there is no need for me to have someone read the notes to me. I can read by myself just fine.

I'm curious and not trying to be confrontational, but why listen to the MP3's if you don't want to go to class? It's the same thing right? It's interesting to see how everyone is different in their learning styles.

I go to lecture, because it keeps me accountable, and forces me to hear the notes a second time. And to make fun of jbone and misparas of course. 😀

Eh, its hard for me to pay attention to something I've learned before in a lecture setting; much easier to study it on my own, not to mention faster. As for the MP3's, I can listen to them at 1.5X the speed 🙂 . So, aside from making sure that he continues on his normal path of reading right from the notes, listening along with reading creates a stronger memory than reading the notes alone; I would listen to the MP3's if I went to the class or not. As for accountable, the no sex because my gf lives 1000 miles away keeps me on pace 😳 (got nothing else to do but cry into sticky tissues) :scared:

As an Iowan, I am slightly hurt by the once is enough comment. J/k...I always have a pretty good time there & usually they have some really good country bands there (if you like that kind of stuff). Oh & I pretty much have to go every year b/c my wife would be crushed if we missed a year....Gotta love inheriting the in-laws' traditions.

Also gotta love BioChem, right first years!?? Advice for next year...you might as well not study for your Preventive Med/Nutrition test next year b/c it is definitely going to be random **** that in no way seems relevant. Bitter??...possibly. Seriously though...how many Alaskan Indians will we ever see damn it.

Glad to hear PrevMed/Nutrition hasn't changed. Lowest grade in medical school. NoT kidding. IT'S NUTRITION!!

It is not about staying accountable, it is all about how you learn and for some people they don't learn well in lecture. My friend didn't go to any lectures after biochem was over and he finished in the top 25 % of the class. As for the money; you are not paying to hear profs read their notes, you are paying for the degree and education and if you learn better on your own then by-all-means that is what you are paying for.

I didn't go to all the lectures and I am glad I didn't, as you continue in your education you will ditch many of the profs because you just can't stand them. I used the MP3s all the time and I loved the fact that I could listen to every lecture at 2x speed right before a test.

I think I may be stuck going to class today because how the hell do I get out of here after diversity...hmm haha

Listen guys, don't get all guilted out about going to class. You are paying to be here. The money goes towards getting the D.O. degree. However that happens is up to you. If you need to be at every lecture in order to meet the needs of your future goals, then be at every lecture. If you only need to be at a few lectures, then be at a few. And if you can do it without ever attending lecture, great! It is about getting through this maze of hoops that we all have to jump through in order to end up where we want to be at the end of the process. Do what works for you. Take advantage of those professors that teach well and "flesh out" the material, and avoid those who only recite from their notes. Find out what works for you and go for it.

It is your education, and YOUR future. Do what YOU need to do.

Speaking of going to or not going to class, what are your thoughts on Behavioral Med Munchkin and Dotsero? I've heard some things about how it is a complete waste and to use notepool, problem is we don't have notepool yet. Anyways, any help or insight would be great.
By the way, Jamers, you looked extra creepy today and I think I saw some girls vomiting in your row. Just thought I'd let you know. 🙂

Well, they said they wanted to see if the rumors were true and, I guess it was just hard to, well, "swallow."

On another note... I thought that Dr. Wilson's review was great and well worth the time.

My uterus!

My dolls and my uterus!

Was that a reference to the poems that Dr. Pereira read yesterday? I thought he did a good job--it takes a lot of guts to read your poetry in front two hundred people you don't know. I noticed some people laughing a lot during his readings, which I thought was unfortunate. Even if they didn't like the poems -- I thought they could at least act respectful.

My post was actually refering to his first two poems. Sorry if I offended. It was in fact, "unprofessional" of anyone to laugh at him in the meeting.

Although it does take courage to speak in front of more than 200 med students, I felt like it was inapropriate to have him speak to us on the topic.
I agree that it is important for med students and doctors alike to be rounded, but this just seemed like a sales pitch. Therefore, it seemed inapropriate to me to be selling his books outside. I wanted to show up at 7am to learn. Not to go to a promotional book signing. I personally only liked his last poem. I wasn't interested in the fact that he played with dolls as a kid.

and... I have to admit though... I had to look at the floor for a bit because all I could think of was Kip from Napoleon Dynamite. Watch the movie, then fire up the MP3. It's the same voice and similar lyrical styles.

"Kip[singing while typing a poem on his computer] Your sandy hair floats in the air... To me it's like a lullaby... I'm just flying by... Oh so high... like a kite... tied to a skate..."

While it does take a lot of balls to present your poetry to a room full of people (trust me I did it and with the freedom that poetry offers to be yourself or anyone for that matter I was approached afterwards to see if I needed counciling (the poem was about depression)), I do not think some of his poems should have been presented. The poem about boys and dolls for example.

On a side note, if the rest of the class is that much of a waste of time, there is no way you will see me there. Any second years want to chime on that? Is it worth even buying the book?

I can see where you are coming from with the book selling after the presentation. I don't think that it was intended to be like a book tour. I think that the staff at DMU, especially the Bookstore lady, really like him and just wanted to have the book be available if you were interested.

I also think that his presentation probably would have been better served as an optional activity. Poetry and such is not everyone's thing.

Sorry if my response was too strong, it is just that I sat behind two people that laughed the entire time--one of my biggest pet peeves is when people are disrespectful or rude in a hurtful manner towards other people.

Regardless of if they didn't like the poem or they thought the poems and the presentation didn't fit in that environment -- I think laughing at him during the presentation is not an appropiate way to voice that displeasure. It serves nothing but to distract people around them and make the presenter feel uncomfortable.

It seems like a much more constructive way might be to send an email to the course coordinator and let them know your feelings -- that way they will have a better idea what students want next year.

I thought the poetry and diversity training were both a complete waste of time. I can't wait until we get into our "regular" curriculum and stop with the hippie, love everybody crap. This may come off a little strong, but it's just my opinion.

True that... double true. You're cool.

The problem with laughing is that it just sneeks up on you. When you shouldn't laugh, it gets even harder to stop. It's the church laughing syndrome.

First of all, I agree with misparas. The first two poems about the dolls and the uterus were TOTALLY inappropriate. I hardly doubt that if Dr. Reed was present he would have agreed to have this gentleman come again. This is freakin medical school, not a touchy feely orgy! I was ready to bust out laughing because some of his poems were so off topic and stupid. It's not that I'm not being professional, it's because it was funny crap. If anything, HIM READING THOSE FIRST 2 POEMS WERE UNPROFESSIONAL.
Other than that, I really liked his presentation. And it was very thought provoking and interesting with many valid points. Frankly, I felt the class acted very professional, I didn't hear any laughing even though I know if someone would have started laughing, there would have been one huge following...including myself.
Enough on this topic, I'm going to go and study Bio chem and play with my dolls. 😉

Please, for those who don't agree, please go and listen to the MP3 and tell me that this didn't belong in a MANDATORY medical school classroom.

Just my opinion. IMHO.

Does anyone know if our BioChem test includes the material that will be covered on Monday???? Also, will there be any more review sessions on membranes and messengers if they are going to be on the test?

We asked Dr. Wilson and he said that there aren't anymore reviews planned. I think that monday's stuff will be on the exam. I'm thinking that it will be at least through the end of second messengers and hormones.

I may actually show up for monday because Mueller is lecturing 👍 👍

I emailed Dr. Wilson a few days back, and he said the test will cover all things covered on Monday, including Dr. Mueller's lecture.

Speaking of hippies and all that good stuff, my roommate last year had the coolest sign that we displayed in our apartment. It's an old school metal sign that simply stated (with arrow), "Hippies Use Back Door". Always made me laugh.

Question: Beh. medicine do they ever do anything but read their notes (aside from those mandatory meetings)?

Nope. Nothing but read the notes. The tests don't seem like they will be that hard, but it seriously hurt the class ranks of a lot of people.

Not true...they do some things other than read their notes. For example, last year for some ridiculous reason Ms. Monsma showed us The Lion King, Steel Magnolias, & some other sappy movie. Seriously...teachers in high school show movies when they don't want to teach...we're in med school, send us home to study if you don't want to teach!!!

edit--Ah, such fond memories of Beh. Med.

Beh Med is the most ridiculous waste of space and time ever outside of cranial. I learned more in 1 day of board review than in that entire course.

Don't waste your time going to the classes, just stay at home and read the notes and maybe the notepools if you're really bored.

Jamers is male. And does anyone know when notepool is going to get going? I haven't heard a thing about it. I'll probably have to go to class until that get's going, which is too bad.

What is the filename for the MP3 of the poems and doll playing?

I just looked for it online and couldn't find it anywhere.

As a whole, orientation was way too drawn out for our class, too much worthless talk about nothing and very little substance. On a positive note it did give us something to use for an icebreaker to start conversations with the following:
"Well, orientation sure sucked today, how do you think they'll waste our time tomorrow?"

Good luck to you all on the 1st Biochem exam, it's a fun one 👎

As far as Notepool 2010, the Notepool committee is still in need of people to volunteer for positions (Schedulers, Fine Regulators, Web master...) In case you are interested, you get free Notepool for being in on the committee.
