I decided to take a break from posting mindless crap and actually inform a few people. Here is a link to an interesting article covering Maine's attempt to create their own version of socialized medicine.

Maine Healthcare

Elementary math indicates that this is not the case; every dollar questionably identified by the state as having been "saved" is taken from consumers thanks to the SOP.

Very interesting article.

Interesting indeed. So what do you guys propose as a solution to increased numbers of uninsured? I'm open to off the wall ideas...

Back to the article.. I don't think that national medical insurance would be the solution given historical factors, bad connotations, and the capitalistic, quasi-market nature of the U.S. It's just too drastic of a change for our economy to swallow or even gradually move towards, especially since we are a country driven by medical technology and scientific innovations. This would undermine research efforts and utilization of such services because of the interest in cost-containment by providers and third-party payers. I don't agree with SOP. It seems like a penalty that grows more severe with patient acuity. HSA is also something that is more of a "luxury" incentive based on employment, which leads to the same problem.

Medicare and Medicaid were designed by the government to support those most vulnerable, and that has become a nightmare to handle or even understand. There are ideas that are being explored, such as the idea of miniclinics operated by nurses and PA's in grocery stores and mega-marts that can provide basic tests and treatments for a low flat rate with or without insurance coverage. There is also the idea of community driven medical initiatives such as community health centers, which offer services on a sliding pay scale as a local public health service. Another idealistic initiative is to leave medical care to the discretion of the community market. That leaves hospitals at the center of providing services and investing in the community from a wellness perspective of health, offering tithes to the community to make improvements and promote prevention. This is too complicated to resolve with even a handful of measures. It will take a combined effort from employers, government, private payers, service facilities, and the individual payer to even begin to chisel at this issue. I'm interested in seeing what other innovations will take shape.

What a toolbox-

Toolbox, Mr. Spears is a ****in warehouse.

Tool hierarchy (lowest to highest):

Tool
Tool Belt
Tool Box
Powertool
Tool Shed
Warehouse

I never really thought anything of it until now, but did anyone include their parents' information on the FAFSA?? I parents are in no way loaded, but I figured that their combined income would be enough that I wouldn't receive any additional aid anyways.

I ask this, because I just wanted to make certain that I'm not hurting myself by NOT including my parents information. They're not even done with their taxes, so I figured it was most important to get my FAFSA in ASAP rather than wait around for them.

Any advice would be great.

Thanks!

By the way, K-Fed is not only a warehouse, he's a goddamn Home Depot.

I didn't include my parents, my dad told me not to. We're not loaded either, but they have enough stuff to screw over my loans. The only way it could help you is if you are taking care of them or they're disabled or something which doesn't seem to be the case. If I were you, I'd just put you and your weak savings account (just like mine) on your FAFSA so that you can get a bag of hundred dollar bills handed to you in August.

Being considered an independent, I don't think that including your parents can exclude you from your loans. The only thing that you would include it for would be the Perkins loan. An extra 6,000 of government loans w/ a 5% intrest max. I'll put in my parents info for a shot at that. I called DMU and they said that we won't get our portal info until the middle to end of March. They said that it was way early and that the info didn't need to be in until the first week in april.

http://www.dmu.edu/FA/guide/index.htm -DMU's financial aid guide

I included the info because some other schools I'm looking at want it. It doesn't affect your EFC or eligibility for federal aid, so there's no downside to reporting it aside from the hassle.

Does anybody have any information about DMU's health insurance policy? Is it supposed to be better/worse than SOMA. Apparently if you're 30 and a-non sterile chick, it's hard to get affordable individual insurance plans. 🙁

I'll try and answer some of your question on insurance. I don't any of the info in front of me at the moment, though. If I remember correctly, it is better than SOMA. Its through Wellmarck BCBS. The 6 month premium was around 950 for just me. If I wanted to include my wife, it jumped to something like $2500. We decided that she would get her insurance through her work and me through school. It was cheaper that way. Deductibles and co-pays are pretty reasonable. Basically, it is a fairly comprehensive program, for an average price. Most people are on it, although if you have a good one for yourself already I would just stay with it.

If you do have your own, it needs to be able to travel with you, (for rotations). We filled out a survey about how we rated the current set up. It was more or less a question about "higher deductible and lower premium or vice versa?" So they take our opinions in consideration when putting it together. Also, I think the school shops around a bit each year for the best group deal.

ok, thats about as vague as I can get. Maybe i can scrape up some more details later. I'm tired of micro anyways.

Thanks! That doesn't sound too bad -- SOMA's prices aren't horrible, but everyone seems to be really dissatisfied with their carrier. I'm guessing Wellmark should be easier to deal with. Hopefully, my husband will get a job with benefits, so his insurance won't be an issue. It seems to make sense to put him on an individual plan until then because they're cheaper than the spouse plans through SOMA and it sounds like through DMU.

The problem I've found with individual plans is that the ones with reasonable deductibles and prescription drugs benefits aren't affordable if you have maternity coverage. Also, the maternity coverage is limited to either $2500 or $4000, which might not be nearly enough if you have complications or need a c-section. I'm not planning on getting pregnant, but I don't think it's prudent for me not to have good maternity coverage because you never know what's going to happen. Since DH is male and all, it's no big deal for him to buy coverage without maternity. 🙂

This is clearly off topic, but as I am looking for places to live, it occured to me...do you guys think that some places aren't listing yet because it is so far away from August and they still have their apartments full of MSI and MSII students? I was on a apartment search and the LATEST date you could enter for move in was May! So my thinking is that there are more places, they are just full as of right now. Any thoughts?

I have been looking around as well. It is a bit early in the game, and there will be alot more openings later. I think I'm pretty set on living at the four seasons though. It's just a few blocks from school and seems like a great place. They are full now but the owner said that it should open up more this summer. We're looking to move in early in may. http://www.fourseasonsaptsdesmoines.com/ I also looked at 3000 grand when I was in Des Moines. It was a really nice place but dang expensive! Our goal was to find a place close to school so that I could walk and my wife could drive to work. Good luck with it.

Any other apts. that have 3 bedrooms??? Anyone??? Close to school?

Are these close to school also?

Sorry to change the topic, but I figured some of you might be interested in this. I'm not trying to scare people, but it's also very good information to know. In case some people didn't know, interest rates on our future loans will be fixed at 6.8%, which is good, because it can't get any higher, but also bad since it can't get any lower. My undergraduate loans are locked in at 2.875%...God I wish that was the fixed rate for my future med school loans.

Anyways, enjoy.

I just got the letter for portal access.

I arrived home from work today and found a wonderful piece of mail from DMU as well. I'm hooked up to the portal. It's actually very nice, user friendly, and it appears to be very helpful. Lots of useful information to make the transition that much easier.

I just wish I could find the supposed "forums" to talk to other students. But all in all, it's great.

Hopefully, everyone else gets their portal as well.

I was just about to start pouting for not receiving my password to the portal or any accompanying information, but then I remembered that I'm already on it! However, I still need to check to see if I'm missing anything.

This is the second face-lift that this site has had since I've had access to it. I think that it's a little difficult to navigate, but they've made accessing the library from off-campus a little more user-friendly, which is a HUGE plus. The problem is that they've been doing a lot of maintenance lately, so Blackboard has been evasive, and I've had problems just trying to access the portal. As you may notice, there are still some glitches (e.g. the elusive forum and webcams) that they need to iron out. I just hope they have everything worked out by the beginning of the school year. But yes, welcome to everybody who is a portal newbie! And yes, we're all just that much closer, and hooray, you know that it's real because you finally have an email address that ends in @dmu.edu! 🙂

Whats up fellow DMUers?! Is it time for school to start yet? I don't know about you guys...but I am sure tired of this whole working thing!!

I haven't logged in or posted in a llloooooonnnnnggg time, but I thought you guys would like to know some current DMU happenings.

Apparently there is a committee on campus that is looking to make ALL classes mandatory attendance. Some of the guest lecturer's were upset that they didn't have an appropriate turn out.

Shouldn't affect the class of 08, but I do feel sorry for subsequent classes if this goes through.

Back to Renal and Boards studying.

I was cruising SDN threads like I often do these days and I stumbled on this little rumor in the DMU Super Geniuses thread post #3712. I hope there is no truth to this. I didn't even apply to schools with mandatory attendance or stringent dress requirements. IMO this would be a negative move. 👎 Why o why? Just peachy... 😡

Not cool at all. I'm going to email Risa.

Has anyone found the info about immunizations and physicals on the student portal? Better yet, has anyone done any of these things yet?

Maybe I'm just ******ed, but is the portal incredibly confusing to navigate to anyone else?

Other than OMM and ethics and a few other classes attedndance is not required according to Dr. Mueller. Though some classes give quizes you must be in attendance for in order to take. He did write that the admin do occasionally talk about changing policies but that required attendance is not happening.

I couldn't help but think that this hierarchy could use some revisions. After some deep discussions with roommates, I propose the following:

Tool
Power Tool (a cordless screwdriver could fit on a tool belt...)
Tool Belt
Tool Box
Tool Shed
Home Depot
Tool Mold
Tool Factory

I think you're right it is a bit rough. It's probable we don't have full access yet either. I personally feel it doesn't matter too much. Heck, to get this far we should be astute enough to be able to dig around and figure out where all the stuff is. But I'm partial, I like a good hunt every once in a while. 😉

Ugggh. I haven't done a darn thing about this yet, nor have I explored for details. Suppose I might just do that tomorrow.

Thanks alot. I called her and got the process started. Now I just need to dig up all my old shot records...

I’m bored…..Any thoughts: Most Realistic, Best Drama, Best Characters, Best use of Body Fluid, etc…..

- Grey’s Anatomy
- Scrubs
- E.R.
- House
- Dr. Quinn Medicine Women
- St. Elswhere
- Doggie Howser M.D.
- General Hospital
- Strong Medicine (Life Time Network)
- Doc (That crap show w/ Billy Ray Cirus) :barf:
- Diagnosis Murder (Dick Van ****…..he was better on Scooby Doo)
- Saved by the Bell – The College Years (That time Kelly worked at the Student Health for Freshmen work-study….she had more privileges/responsibilities than most interns/residents)

I’m sure I missed a few (Reality Shows Excluded, because we all know Dr. 90210 is the Best, although I do like seeing the Res. get Pimped on the other shows )

Side note, I'm not as much of a TV Nerd as it may appear….in fact I only enjoy Scrubs, mainly because I relate to having a running inner dialog. I did just start watching G.A., but only after the girl-on-girl-on-girl shower scene roped me in…..that show is more addicting than Sudoku…..Have a day 🙂

The paperwork is also available on the portal. From your home page click on COM students, then click on the link under health form.

The DMU portal does suck. Tried to change my password to no avail. And getting around the site sucked, but it's new so...oh well. Getting excited. Just got my window decal today in the mail. Yea baby!

The password thing bugs me the most. Hopefully it'll get alot better. I'm excited to get the heck out of undergrad and move to Iowa.

I'll second that farewell to undergrad. But dang, I'm sure gonna miss this tiny sleepy college town. That picture above really drives the message hard. I'm going to have to switch back to 'city mode.' *sigh* I can already feel the little town withdrawal symptoms creeping up on me...
