##--DMU Class Of 2010--## part 02

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
No, I'm not back but, I wanted to say I still come on to see what everyone is saying: just don't log on. We had a great first year everyone now go enjoy your summer!!!! Don't do anything Jamey wouldn't do. So that pretty much leaves anything open.

I'm off to the mother land. Play nice and I'll see ya'll on the flip side.
(that is if I don't drive into a ditch first)

Hey 2010ers

Another '11 guy and I have a 3br at the 3000 and our third guy bailed on us, so we have an open room. If anyone is looking for a place to live this year, send me a message! Rent would be $408/person before utilities.

Hello my beautiful babies. Exactly one month of freedom left before we take the plunge again! Hope everyone is enjoying break...

Anyone care to rate the golf courses in Des Moines? We are starting from the bottom (I think) and playing at Grandview this weekend....

For those of you know me, I just got engaged!!!!!!!!😍

Congrats genios!!!! Being married is good stuff!... unless of course you wanna just sit and chill on the couch and play halo.... thats a big no. 👍

quick question...because I will be jobless during medical school are we allowed to use our financial aid money for non educational purposes..say maybe an engagement ring😉..any insight would be helpful

You can use your financial aid money for gambling for all they care. They just give you a certain amount and you need to live off of that amount of money or find other sources, because they aren't likely to give you more than the maximum, unless you take out one of the other alternative loans. So yes, engagement rings can be bought.

Nice job FS, look forward to allowing you to join the cool guys club (i.e. married ones) soon. Oh yea I love the story about the spaghetti sauce in the back of your car by the way....Classic!

Hello all MSII,

I'm an incoming MS I and have one quick question. For weeks that we don't have exam or one exam, would it be OK to be away for the weekend ( will bring books along to study) or we would not have that luxury to be away during our semester?(except for holidays) Thanks for all your help!

Absolutely. There are some students that never leave Des Moines (maybe once for Christmas break) and then there are those that leave all the time. As long as you haven't signed up to do any volunteer work for that weekend (like an OFL or health fair, etc.) feel free to leave for as long as you want. I know some homies that would go home for an entire week last year and come back Monday morning for the test. It all depends on how you manage time, and if you have to be on campus to learn...

jbone, have you been playing with matches again? Utah is burning away😱

2 more weeks~

yea, I did my worst...Good thing Iowa is green and pretty much non-flammable. Anyway, I'm back in Iowa...drove all night 16 hours straight baby! Time to sleep. Anyone up for a round of golf before we start getting PWNED? Let me know. I'm free all week.

FS...congrats!

I've missed everyone and am looking forward to smacking you all down soon.

I"m up for golf, I'll be back in town this weekend and maybe we can go Monday or Tuesday or something.

As for going home to the incoming MSI - talk to FSPro, he went home to San Diego nearly every two weeks, and well he's a stud. So yea it can be done obviously.

I'm hardly a stud, but yes, it can be done. I went home, or had my girlfriend/fiance come out to Des Moines about every other week. It isn't easy, but it is doable.

You flew back and forth that much?? wow...then you must know a cheap airline or a cheap way to fly. any recommendation? thanks

I flew home once a month to see the gf. The downside was that money was a bit tight this summer but well worth it. It all really depends on how you prepare. If you are like me and the prospect of studying 19 hours a day scares you and you would just love a weekend off a month, do it. If you are like some of the geniuses on here and can wing a 90, go home. So, long story short, wait until you have a few exams under your belt and then judge what you want to do.

Someone else asked about using loan money for anything: I used mine to buy the engagement ring. FS you and I have something in common this summer.

Well, that is it for me, I will be sure to write on here in another three months time 🙂

I don't know how FS did it but, I used expedia and picked the cheapest airline. I would recommend against flying North West as I have never had a good experience with them yet, however. Also, reserve your flights several months in advance, ESPECIALLY for the thanksgiving/x-mas flights. I spent about 700 together on those two flights (thanksgiving was 450 alone). Also, you accumulate a lot of frequent flyer miles which can be used as well.

Anyone know when we get our little brother/sister?

Thank Jamers, FS, and everyone for your valuable info. 😍

I received an email from Gina saying that they're in the process of picking out siblings for us MS1

Since no one else said it, unless I missed it somewhere.....Congrats Jamers! Pretty soon everyone that posts on here is going to be extreme old balls.

Hey congrats Jamers!!! When you guys getting married. We are looking at next summer. Just waiting to pick my vacation time for our third year. See you guys soon.

Oh, and golf for sure when I get back. I'm ready to play for some wings!

Hey kids,

Hope second year is going smoothly for y'all. Anyway, just want to know the skinny on textbooks. What's the consensus on what to buy and what not to buy? Are many upperclassmen going to be selling books to us greenhorns, or should we start poking around half.com, et al?

IMHO...do not buy all of them.

Agreed..... In fact you really only need two textbooks for all of MSI.... Netters and Mosby for PD.....everything else is just gravy

Thanks to the bone and the janitor. Don't we get a copy of Netters for joining SOMA, or something like that? Also, you recommend not getting an OMM manual? Just surprising to me, but then again, I have no idea what first year is really like. Appreciate all of the help and if anyone else has a shortlist of useful books, feel free to help a brother out.

I can tell you w/ 100% certainty that you do not need ANY other text for OMM than what they give you. I had tons & tons of OMM on my COMLEX & I studied only w/ the OMM texts the school gives you; I was completely 100% prepared for every question (except one WTF question about a cranial dysfunction w/ TMJ???) I got. Just my $.02

Kritter, any advice for us "second years"???

My advice, hmmm...

1) Learn what you need to learn for boards from each of your classes using First Aid & BRS or Rapid Review Path as a guide. That will not guarantee you a decent score on the exams since many of the questions you get will be nit-picky to the point of insanity, but at least you are headed in the right direction for boards.

2) TA...OMM & PD if you can as much as you can w/out hurting yourself. It is a huge time committment, but I can reassure you that I did not have to prepare for OMM questions nearly as much as a few friends who didn't TA OMM. PD is a great bonus b/c often board questions will pretty much give you the answer if you know what test they are describing. Remember...the best way to know if you understand something is to be able to teach it to someone else.

3) Enjoy your time as much as possible & take time to remember your family/friends. I may not be #1 in my class, but I have a happy marriage w/ a supportive wife & in the long run you will need an outside support system more than top grades.

Good luck to everyone. I am by no means an expert in anything med school related, but think that I am good at from learning from my mistakes so I would be happy to try to answer any questions by PM or forum (although I can't say I read this thread very often).

I hope everyone will be there for the preorientation at the BOWLING LANES BABY! All you can bowl for 7.50
Hope to see you all there. 9-Midnight.

anyone want to teach me what is going on with Biostats? I don't understand much of what is in the ppt😕😕😕

I'm with you. I have no idea what is going on. 😕:scared:

I agree w/Krazy Kritter. As far as OMM for COMLEX... just go to class, study for the tests, TA in OMM, and use the materials they give you during the OMM department's OMM board review. Honestly, you will breeze through the OMM portion of COMLEX.

Don't worry too much about the statistics on EBM, either. I didn't do too well on the written test, but all the small group assignments will give you enough points to end the class well into the 90's. Understand the basics and you will do fine.

Good luck everyone!

oh yes my friends, the money is down and come Sept 25...it's on! Who's down? And why the hell doesn't anyone post anymore?
I feel so alone:scared:🙁

We are all too busy stealing the first year's food and then hiding from the pastry gestapos

Pharm will be good at that...

Thoughts on SSP? To apply or not to apply... is it worth it?

Coming from a 4th year applying for residency......Definitely do it if you are planning on anything remotely competitive. The DO world has only SSP to compare with AOA status for the allopaths.

Thanks for the insight. Not sure what I'm interested in yet, but like any other thing (USMLE) it's probably better to do it and find out you don't need it than the other way around...

What has two thumbs and will be inhaling corndogs this weekend? THIS GUY 👍 👍

So, is the answer to #3 of the Nutrition sample questions "all of the above" or "A and C" - the typo is confusing me a little...
