also for that residency 80 hour thing, they changed it from 120 or w/e because a resident was so tired he died in a car accident while driving home after a 37 hour stretch and there was legal action. I hear though that most attendings expect you to ignore that 80 hour rule and still push to 110s

I wouldn't necessarily agree with the statement we were poorly prepared for boards. I actually felt quite the opposite. I do have to say it is a totally different type of exam. So, the questions you get won't be like what you saw in classes per se, but the material covered certainly was geared towards boards (for the most part).
 
Would any of you '10'ers recommend buying the "dead book" or just go into lab sometimes in free time (i live close, 3000) and save myself $70?

biochem, bm, and others are going ok but not quite sure what I need to do for anatomy

I bought it...and used it a lot. I used it along with lab hours. It was helpful the night or two before and exam.

BTW-for all you freaks out there.....

Oh, it will be on. I won't be doing much of anything that week. And yes, the game has already been purchased at Game Stop and I'll be there Sept 24th at about 11:30 pm.

and nj, sorry I missed you. I work at the library tomorrow night 7-12 and will be at school pretty much all day. Maybe I'll see you then...if not...I'm sending the janitor and soundman to take you down. :laugh::laugh:

I've decided we don't really have a true honor code here. We only have a signed acknowledgement that we understand the consequences of being caught being dishonest. If people really believed in the honor code, we could have our scores before everyone had taken the test. In spals, Omm, and different lab tests we take tests before other students and on our HONOR, we don't tell our friends what was on the test. How is this different? If someone did break the honor code and told one of their buddies who hasn't taken the test what the questions were, how is holding back scores changing anything? it only stops someone from confirming the answers that they gave their buddy were correct. So, it stops someone who is cheating from a little extra cheating??! Now this hypothetical cheater can give his friend all 52 answers instead of the 49 he already gave him. It Makes no real difference. The honor code implies you are HONORING the trust placed in you to be honest, if you aren't given that trust to be honest, then the honor code is null.

Anyone know how many points the GI SPAL is worth? And how do you "study" for it? I'm not the fantastic clinician that SOUNDMAN is so I need to brush up ( a.k.a relearn).

I'm going to go over all the abdominal/GI tests from PD last year to refresh my memory. Then I'll probably look at an example note from last year's class on Blackboard (since nothing was posted for this year's GI SPAL) and practice writing it a few times. That's about it...

After your encounter, you are taken to the computer room where you have 15 minutes to answer anywhere from 23-26 questions based on the required text readings (the Cutler book), questions from your lectures in the GI system, and 9 DxR questions (3 per presentation). Then you are taken to the write-up room where you are given 30 minutes to write an entire SOAP note, including the A and P portions of the note



So this might change how you study.
 
So what are the required text readings from the Cutler book? I didn't see them on the syllabus. Are we just supposed to read the GI section?

Any 3rd or 4th years our there want to comment on the change in DMU rotations. All 3rd year students, except for 40-42 will now be doing all of their core rotations in Iowa. Is this something that you guys/girls are proponents of, or do you think it's ultimately a bad idea?
 
WTF is with all of the later GI mp3s???? I have my volume cranked, and I'm absolutely struggling to hear the lecturer? No notepool for me means I'm screwed.

I'm a 2nd year and I'm most worried about what the quality of hospitals will be. I was strongly considering Michigan for my 3rd year rotations and now I feel as if my #1 option, at least as of now, has been taken away. I really want to know where all of these sites are so I can research the hospitals a little bit. I hope the names of these sites come out sooner rather than later. 😕

My feelings exactly. If they wanted to ensure that we were getting the best sites possible, then why suddenly force a much larger portion of the class to go to brand new sites in Iowa??? I just have a bad feeling about all of this, so I'm a little bummed now. I have a feeling that a large number of us will be moving all around in podunk Iowa, which is not what I had in mind for 3rd year at all.

I couldn't have said it any better myself. I feel as if I'm a guinea pig right now and I don't like that feeling one bit. Maybe when I see the rotation sites, I'll feel better, but right now I'm pretty down. I have a strong feeling that Des Moines sites are going to be extremely competitive.

On a side note, at hospital day I talked to hospitals in Ohio and Michigan. When asked, many of them said that they would be part of our core sites for next year. This was mainly so I could put a 'face' with the name of the hospital when our list of sites were released. At the same time, several hospitals in Iowa said that they wouldn't be our core sites for next year. I think this is also part of the reason why I was so surprised by today's email.

I sure hope that we have this meeting with Schaffer & co. soon. I think a lot of our classmates feel as we do - that the intent to keep us "close to home" during 3rd year could compromise the education and exposures we receive during rotations. I agree also that rotation spots in Des Moines will be at a premium.

I can't help but wonder if this has to do with students from DMU (in the past) having problems passing Comlex II. Now that it is necessary to pass it before you can graduate, maybe they feel that staying close to home-base will help prepare us for what we will see on that test - and it may also help them catch those students who may not be likely to pass ahead of time so changes can be made...
 
Did I read the email right? If we end up in Ohio, we have to return to DMU and take our shelf exams every month or so? That seems like a bit much.

I also don't see how moving to the gluteal folds of Iowa is going to help with jobs and family. This whole thing seems weird. How many Des Moines spots can there be?

I really hope that it's not as bad as we think.

First of all, I don't think these moves are going to be as bad as we think. I highly doubt that the dean and DMU would allow their students to rotate in sub-par locations. Not only would that NOT benefit the students, it would hurt DMU as a whole as well. Call it blind faith but I still have confidence that we will be taken care of in the long run. If not, someone is going to get PWNED. Let them worry about the details and let us focus on the big stuff ahead...aka 26 lectures in GI and Cardio starting on Monday. And last but not least, September 25...
 
Two quick things:

1) I think we'll all have a better idea on what is going on once we get the list. I'm not thrilled right now about losing Michigan, but at the same time I do very much trust Drs. Schaffer, Plundo and Reed. I do hope that what they see as the positives of keeping us in Iowa work out and that they end up outweighing the negatives both next year, as well as in the long run.

2) I'm surprised, no wait, I'm shocked that JBone doesn't have a huge Utes logo copy and pasted to this message board right now. They man-handled, abused and embarrassed UCLA and we have nothing to show for it. I'm not from Utah, nor am I a fan of Utah (although I did have a semi-creepy man crush on Keith Van Horn in '95), but there are a few college football teams I despise. In order of most hated: Notre Dame, Michigan, USC and UCLA. Needless to say I'm pretty happy today considering that two of these teams got a WHUPPIN' for the ages.

This is decision is kinda of meh... mainly b/c there aren't hardly any options outside of iowa anyway. If anything I think most upperclassmen would consider you guys lucky, because you get to stay near des moines pretty much for all of third year.

4th year is the year you will want to travel, show your stuff during a clerkship that you want to do your residency at. So its no major loss. You will learn a lot of the same stuff 3rd year regardless of where you are at. To be honest, most students will admit that what you get out of 3rd year, is how much you want out of it... push harder to learn more and you will... stand around and passively follow around and you will be merely shadowing all year.

Cheers~ to your entire 3rd year spent with horrible drivers.

I was usually furiously scratching down notes as the 30 minute timer was beeping during my SPALS. Something clicks during 3rd year, or you get lazier and write less, I'm not sure. But, I just took COMLEX II PE in Phila and they gave us 9 minutes to write our notes and I had no problems finishing.

On another note....study up for those tests after the SPALS, they are hard. Though, from what I've heard, hard for your class means 95% average.

26 lectures on a SINGLE exam=WORTHLESS 👎



Very effective learning going on here.
 
If I was to do 2nd year all over again, I would have my Goljan path or my BRS path beside me when studying for the exams. It'll make board prep that much easier in a few months. Just my 2 cents.

So, how is one supposed to prepare for their GI Sim? I have mine on Friday and have no idea what to do. I'll probably just treat it like a SPAL... Hopefully someone in my group has had Surg Skills in case we need to start an IV.

5 more days jbone. Feel like having a post-pharm Halo3 party at your place next week?

I'm sitting here going through the anti-psychotics pharm lecture and his explanation of Slide 10 (in regards to binding affinity and dosage) makes absolutely no sense. In fact, it sounds like he's describing something opposite to what the graph actually says.

Did he explain it incorrectly, or would some care to explain what I'm missing?
