Dmu Interview!!!!!! *Merged Edition*

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
What time are ya'all booking your flight back? Do you think we can make a 5:00pm flight or is that too early?

As long as you tell them you want to have the early interview spot, you can be done by 2PM. The Des Moines airport is a 10 min taxi ride from school tops.

The airport is very small, you can get your tickets, get through security and get to any of the 5-6 gates in 20 minutes.

Thanks FutureNavyDOc & Trabada. I just made my flight reservations after confirming an early interview. I'm excited about DMU!

Anyone staying with a student host?

EDIT: Also anyone asked if it's okay to bring your spouse along for the interview day (obviously not for the interview).

I'm staying with a student host.

As for bringing a spouse... I wouldn't. If you get in and decide it's the place for you, you could always bring them back.

I would assume there's a second look weekend?

MEEEEEE Yes I will be interviewing that day.

Agreed. I didn't bring the wife but when I decided on DMU, we came back together to look for a place and have a look around. She really likes Des Moines and was really suprised by what she saw. So there might be beneifits to bringing your spouse along. But do what is best for you. Good luck! 👍

I got a fast track interview e-mail today. They want me to interview on 10/6. 🙂

Location: Somewhere in a freakin corn field

Sorry, had to point out the ironing.

Not trying to be a d1ck here. In fact, I'm guessing you just typed it without even thinking, but "ironing"? I don't recall JBone mentioning anything about his laundry.

Wow, didn't expect that. To be honest though, that's the vaguest reference I've ever seen. I'm pretty certain I've seen that episode of The Simpsons, but that particular part had no lasting impact on me.

I don't think I'll be picking the use up any time too soon, but I'll give you credit😛 .

If there's a vague Simpsons/Futurama reference out there, chances are, I've made it.

....And most normal people just look at me funny.

So, the interview feedback looks like they are group interviews.
Does that mean like, more than one candidate is being interviewed at a time? Yikes.

No.
2 or 3 faculty members and usually one student (first or second year).

anyone who got invited for an interview have a gpa less than 3.4??

From the previous page:

From reading the feedback, I can tell they do panel interviews. But does anyone know more about who does them?
Each candidate will meet individually with an interview team for approximately 30 minutes. The team normally consists of a DMU basic science faculty member, a clinician, and a current COM student. Occasionally, a fourth interviewer might sit in on the interview to observe as part of their training. The interviewers will ask questions about your academic strengths, interests, and your motivation towards a career in osteopathic medicine.

Edit: Damn you internet with your vast wealth of knowledge...

Does anybody know what sort of requirements they look for when they give out those fast track interviews? Is it a minimum science and overall GPA and MCAT? Anybody know what they are or are they top secret?

Is there a way to check the status the secondary application on-line, such as if they have received LOR, or do you have to call/e-mail them?

So...i was fairly excited about the fast-track invitation for interview like everyone else who received them...congrats...but it seems like a lot of you guys are getting them or may seem like it....Hopefully its not something that Des Moines just does, I hope they actually looked seriously into our primaries and found something they like about each of us. I got a 28 MCAT and 3.66 gpa but am sure a lot of you have higher numbers..my interview day is Sept 28th....anyone else going that day...wanna be interview buddies...lol...just kidding. Good Luck To everyone

I would guess that the minimium for the fast track would be to have gpa's and mcat scores above the average for the school. So for Des Moines, the average mcat is 25 and gpa is like 3.56 (overall) and 3.49 (Science)...so I am guessing that if you are above all three of those then you will get a quick interview, assuming you have the health care experience and other extra curriculars.

I got fasTracked. See my MDApps link on my signature if you want stats.

Honestly, does it really matter if your interview is called "fast track" or "plain old interview" or "courtesy interview" or "fat chance interview"???
Think about it guys - it is an interview any way you call it, and it is a good thing. Stop focusing on the small stuff and enjoy it! 🙂

Thanks for clearing it up. I had read that it would be this way, but the "interview feedback" section of SDN has "group interview" checked off by so many people, which I thought meant 'group of candidates' not 'group of interviewers'..., which to me, is less intimidating!

We just got our class profile for 2010 and numbers went up.
GPA= 3.65
Science= 3.6
MCAT= 26

Oh well, guess I won't be getting a fast track interview if those are the numbers. My GPA is close, but no cigar. Now if it were lower by a few hundreths.... Oh well. Just need to wait and hope they give me an interview anyhow.

numbers really shot up since the previous year. SO everyone getting DMU interviews right now are getting fast track ones?

I have an interview but I don't believe I am a fast track candidate. My stats are not necessarily average either! But I am quite excited to be interviewing!🙂

Does anybody even know what a fast-track interview is? I got a pretty standard e-mail invite - nothing special or fast about it.

When you get the invite, it says:

DMU fasTrack Invitation to Interview

in the subject header. It came 3 days after my AACOMAS was mailed (one day after I got the secondary). Other than that, it's just a normal interview invite as far as I can tell. You just need to have your file complete by the time you interview.

SO for people who did not get the fasttrack interview, were you guys complete (including rec) when you got the interview? It seems the only difference is that fast track get interviews before they are fully complete....correct me if im wrong.

Yes I was complete at the time of my interview invite.

Yep, fasTrack get interview invites even before they have their secondary in.

Has anyone received a package from DMU yet? I am waiting for it and a list of students that are willing to host for the interview. I heard it's a good experience to talk to the students. My interview is coming up and I need to make hotel reservations so I am starting to get anxious.

I thought there was a link in the email for that list?

No it was not in the email.
Come to think of it, I don't think I heard back from them after I confirmed my interview. After you guys emailed back to confirm the interview date did they email you back?

DMU should have e-mailed a you an excel file with student hosts and the link for recommended hotels. Drop one of the admissions people an e-mail on Tuesday and have them send it to you. Otherwise, the hotel list is on the website under the interview section in admissions. I booked at the Heartland Inn - Airport b/c of the rate and shuttle service. They also have complimentary breakfast from 4am - 10am and free wireless internet 👍 . Interview feedbackers also indicated it was a good place to stay.

Is the place expensive?

Nope, special rate of $59 per night if you mention you're interviewing at DMU. Another reason I chose to stay there.

This was at the end of my emailed interview invitation.
It links to both hotels to stay at and students willing to host.

For information about Des Moines, hotel options and a list of current COM students who can host you for the night while you’re in Des Moines, please go to:

I have a 3.1 GPA, 3.1 Science, and 30 MCAT. I do have lots of ECs and an upward trend in my grades - freshman year didn't go so well. I was complete at DMU Thursday and received my interview invite on Tuesday - so less than 1 week. I can't complain!! 😍

Are ya'all getting a rental car?

Are ya'all getting a rental car?

Hey everybody, I just wanted to chime in again. When I came last year, I stayed at the Heartland inn by the airport. $59 a night and you get a great room/pool and all. They have a free shuttle but I rented a car and I spent 2 nights interviewing, checking out the city and surrounding areas. Most people wish they would have rented a car...I would recommend it.
Des Moines is a great city with a great night life and great places to eat that won't kill your wallet. Hell if your bored, you can come over to the school and play some pool/foosball with us as we try not to go crazy with the work load. Any of you can PM me if you have any questions about the school, Des Moines or anything in general. Most of all, RELAX...BUT bring your A game. This year’s class (Class of 2010) had the highest stats in DMU history. And they WILL only go up. Interview/return secondaries EARLY and you should do fine. This school is quickly gaining even more momentum than it already has and will be even a hotter commodity in the near future. Facilities, faculty and location is second to NONE. Oh and the students are pretty cool too.
Be excited, you should be.

Now back to biochem. Are you sure ya'll want to do this crap? Damn, this is time intensive...and freakin hard.
Best part about DMU, Bio chem is only 10 weeks long!! Thank the Lord for that. Have a good one. And remember that any of us here at DMU would love to help answer any questions you might have. Play nice and enjoy your freedom.

Is the shuttle both to the airport & DMU? I have an early flight so I'm not sure I'll be able to tour the city this time around. I hope to come back another day though to tour the city though.

Any recommendations for dinner locations that night?

The shuttle is to/from the airport and DMU. I'll be renting a car, but mostly b/c I'm driving to Kirksville for an interview on 10/6.

There is a street downtown—about five minutes by car from school—called Court Ave. It is full of restaurants and some bars. There is also a great restaurant that is a little bit more expensive (10-15 dollars a plate) but it is a microbrewery and a very cool place. It is a restaurant on the bottom and then a lofted second level which is more like a bar with pool tables and such. It is called Raccoon River Brewery and is located on 10th St. downtown. Here is their website: http://www.raccoonbrew.com. Their menu, along with a lot of other stuff, is on the website.

I am a first year at DMU, by the way, and I really like it here. If you guys have any question feel free to PM me.

I just got an interview invite at DMU. I haven't even send in my LORs yet.
September 15 is the day. Talk about birthday present.
Does any know how to properly pronounce Des Moines. I don't want to have a Spinal Tap moment.
Yeah baby, yeah

when did you submit your secondary for DMU?

I got the secondary invite on the 08/07. I think I submitted the secondary application the next day, I can't remember. It was right away though. And then I got the interview invite on 08/11.
