Thanks! I also want to add LMU DCOM as a Canadian friendly school. I will be withdrawing from a few interviews in the next week. Happy to be finished the waiting game and looking forward to helping all the new applicants, this year and next year.

interviews approaching...*tension mode* 😛 😎

side note: still haven't heard from ccom.. completed aug 22nd +pissed+

btw, congratz on ur MSU acceptance!! 👍

Same here. I'm sure its my mcat score. I've learned a lot during this process. Some schools value numbers more, others value life experience. The key for me was finding schools that valued my experience in healthcare, because some did not. Anyway, I could not be happier how things turned out.

Honestly I just don't think CCOM is as Canadian friendly as AZCOM. Point in case, there is only one Canadian there this year and she was pulled off the waitlist sometime in May I believe, or even later. In contrast, AZCOM has 4 Canadians in this class. And I believe the majority of us were accepted right after interview as opposed to off a waitlist.

That's all IMHO anyways.

azcom's on top of my list - interviewing there 12th oct!! :xf: 😀
though I am also loving the idea of nsu (florida!!).. the acceptance rates (out of interviews for internationals) better be good for these two!

sad about CCOM - wud've been close to home..oo well..
hey, that reminds me - i haven't heard anything from KCOM EITHER! got the completed mail almost 2-3 weeks back..... ???

oh hey drgioiadds, how long was it after your secondary that u heard from LMU?? ...just wondering what timeframe I should be looking at, to hear back from them..

last question: do you guys think its too late to send in my secondary for touro??😳 I received it like end of last month...sort of got delayed in filling it out..

Have not heard from KCOM either. Completed MSU in July, acceptances went out sept 7, received mine the next week. LMU originally "lost" my secondary, but apologized when I called and figured out the problem, they reviewed me the next day. They said they would invite me for an interview and called one month later (yesterday). I'm not sure about Touro. I filled out the secondary and sent it back the next day, but I haven't heard yet.

has anyone (Canadians) got an acceptance to KCOM in the past 2-3 years? I think it's another one of those schools like PCOM where they claim to accept Canadians, but not really as indicated by their acceptance track record...

Hey, does anyone have an interview scheduled at COMP on or before Nov 3?
I've been reading about this multiple mini interview format and just wondering if anyone has done it. I'm not too sure what to expect.

I do know one thing though it mentioned reading a 'script' and I am no actress lol.

LOL, I know. From what I understand, you get a few minutes to read a scenario, before you go into a room. Then, for 8 min you have to respond to the situation. I'm bowing out of this interview. Let me know how it goes!

I know ziparsidone1 received an interview invite from KCOM. Also for the record, WVSOM does not accept internationals and DMU no longer accepts internationals.

It seems like the most Canadian friendly DO schools for the past 2 cycles include - azcom, western, touro, kcumb and msu. LMU Dcom really impressed me - I liked their rural focus so I applied there as a long shot. They were really friendly and prompt with responding to me.

Gosh that is intimidating!!! I am pretty in touch with my values both as a person and health care provider since I have experience; but even that doesn't leave me with much confidence for responding to their 'scenario'.

The plan will be to remain calm and keep my :xf:that I don't throw out a response from left field. With that type of an interview I feel like I will definitely walk out of there saying "why the hell did I say that" and think of 1,000 better points to have made lol.

Ohh the interview anxiety and I still have 6 weeks

Wait, are you referring to COMP when you talk about multiple mini interviews? Unless they just changed it, that is not true. When I interviewed last year, it was myself, one physician (who also teaches), and a 4th year medical student....for 45 minutes. No script or anything crazy.

Sorry if you meant another school, and I just read it. (sleepy from anatomy🙁)

Yeah this is the first year for COMP and the new interview format.

I received the interview invite this morning for AZCOM 🙂. The only thing I was a bit disappointed about is that the interview isn't until Jan 13 🙁. If I am accepted at any of the schools I interview at before that I'm worried I will have to put my deposit in before even seeing AZCOM and I really wanted to go to that interview earlier in the cycle. Well not much can be done about it now.. just wait and see!

What a great group of people we have on here!!

Big thanks to drg- my AZCOM Jan 13th interview is now early October.

Anyone feels ripped off by DMU? I only received $32 for a refund. In my opinion, we should be paid the full secondary cost...not to mention the cost we had to pay for the primary application.

Well from what all the first years say is enjoy all your time now because come August/Sept your life will become study, study, study!!!

HA

You have no idea😛 I was totally in the same boat last year, counting down the days until school. Now....want to know what the most enjoyable part of my day is? When I put my head on my pillow at 1am to go to sleep, after 5 hours of studying and up 9 hours of lecture/lab.....only to wake up at 630am to do it all again:laugh:

Im counting down the days until 3rd year (or until Gross Anatomy is over). Every 3rd year keeps telling me how awesome rotations are😀

OMM is pretty fun, and so are the patient encounters we do with SOAP notes though. You guys will love them when you start, we basically get to play doctor😛

Right now I'm working at the southwest middlesex medical clinic. Its basically a medical/dental clinic for a rural community in Southwestern ontario. Somedays, I just want to go work on the other side with the residents 🙂

I never heard from them at all. Just withdrew this morning.

I didn't receive a secondary application from them (most applicants received one right after their primary was verified). I called 3 weeks later and they told me it usually takes 4-6 weeks. I didn't believe that so I clicked the webstar link that someone posted in the NSU thread and filled out secondary anyway.

I interviewed on 8/30 and I'm accepted 🙂

Awesomeee!! Congratzzz!! 👍😀

btw, since u have started interviewing, could you (pretty plzz!) share some of the questions asked that were specifically related to us, Canadian, students??

on the same topic, guys I have been searching up the American HealthCare Reform.. but could you guys share some brief answers on why we would want to go to US to get our basic medical education?
one factor is, ofcourse, the osteopathic aspect..the fact that there are no osteopathic medical schools here..
what about others factors, specifically any related to american healthcare? (as compared to canada..?)

oh and, if asked with "would you want to return to Canada after getting your degree?" kinda question - what's the best way to go about with this?

Thanks for the NSU feedback. I called today to make sure they had everything so I guess I'll just wait... I'm pumped for my three interviews, just hoping for one or two more.

Congrats on the recent acceptances!

If anyone's planning to withdraw from the AZCOM interview, could you please let me know? The earliest interview date I was able to get was Jan 13, 2012 which is very late and kind of pointless at that point. Thank you🙂

I have a question about student loans. I've heard to avoid TD, which is where I had my business acct/personal acct. Which banks would any of you recommend?

I'm from BMO and the info I have so far is 50k X 4 yrs. I haven't gone through the process yet though so there may be some error in that. Since you know so early I would just set up appts with a few different banks to talk to them about it. Let me know how it goes.

RBC was good for me, and I wasn't even a client at the time. They have US based bank accounts too so that may be an option for you (or did have - they sold their US arm pending regulatory approval so its not final yet)

PM me.

Let me know when you are there. I could drive down a friday after work - I'm about 2.5 hours away. EL has a nice campus. Support staff was real nice to me. I met a lot of alumni at a CME course this summer and I was impressed of how supportive everyone was with my decision to go back to school.

I'm personally going to try to get DMC campus, but if it doesn't work out EL will be second choice. I don't really want the college feel again and it would be nice to be part of a smaller group.

Can anyone give some insight on answering "where would you want to practice" kind of question?

There are schools that have strong regional bias ..so I almost think they WANT to keep all the physicians they can train. So it'll be better if you said that you wanted to stay and serve the population there.

On the other hand, I'm not sure if there's a strong sentiment to protect the US labour force against foreign candidates. I've heard that when you're applying for study Visa to Canada, you're best off saying that you don't want to stay after you finish your studies (my parents work in immigration).

Seem like it'll be safe to say "it depends on what happens during the next 4 years".

What do yo guys think?

I don't think it matters what you really say, but I think its safe to say that you want to explore different possibilities while in med school. So much can change in 4 years and during your residency.

You may get a more indirect question like "where do you see yourself in 10 years?" I also got the question " I bet you didn't think you'd be here 10 years ago!"

You could say you have an interest in working in a rural area, or some other generality if thats what you want to do.

Personally, I do like rural medicine and the challenges it faces. It forces you to go learn a wider scope of practice.

i feel it'd be the safe way to go as well.. and the honest way as well... i mean, let's face it, i don't think any of us are 100% sure we will want to return to canada, or keep practicing in the school's area, after graduation... I would like to explore my options, see what different opportunities are available to me, when deciding upon where I would want to practice.. i've never volunteered in a rural area - perhaps if i do a rotation there, i'd end up liking that! i feel that some answers (like where we'd want to practice, or what specialty we'd want to pursue) just can't be given in absolute terms until we go through the med school journey..

would this kind of an answer be good for such questions??

btw, uuh, another question: not DO related.. but definitely canadian related  specifically, ontario related, and precisely- OMSAS related
does OMSAS/schools contact verifiers for the activities listed in ABS?

I think that question is posted in premed 101. Honestly that part of the application turned me off, especially since most of my verifiers would no longer work/volunteer at the place mentioned.

I was going to apply to Northern and Mac, but the more I got thinking, the more I want a DO education. Northern would probably have been a good shot because of the regional bias and I would have been considered in a separate category (mature student). If you are applying only to Mac, you don't need the verifiers.

awesome guys. Thanks for the fast responses!!

Accepted to AZCOM =)!!!

* in the hotel for LMU-DCOM. The school looks like a castle from far away and I would greatly prefer a helicopter ride the next time I get here, lol..
