Do we really need a separate osteopathic subforum?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The idea is to consolidate medical school-related threads into one forum so there is more participation about issues that affect all med students. The osteo subforum would really only be for OMM discussion/related issues.

Yeah, but OMM isn't the only topic discussed in the Osteo forum. SAS, school openings, AOA/COCA policy changes, etc. are all subjects readily discussed in the Osteo forum.

Anyway, nothing you said really contradicts my statement. I understand the justification, I just think the people who will be affected the most by the change (i.e. the people who use the Osteo forum the most should be involved in the discussion). If their consensus is the same as the one reached here in Allo, so be it.

I think the decision was already made... see Lee's post above.

"Based on member feedback, the allopathic and osteopathic medical student forums will merge. Class threads will remain in subforums. Thread markers will be available to designate profession-specific discussions."

I want to applaud the admin and moderator staff for this decision.

This is great but it would be nice if we could designate what type of medical student we are on the user status side panel.

While the upcoming forum merger helps everyone i'm worried questions regarding research, mentoring, chances in specific specialities will be different than MD students.

People may get inappropriate information if they don't give all the facts.

Discussing "AOA" in a merged forum will be a new source of trolling. I've dropped a few turds into the Osteo forum confusing their AOA with our AOA. Hilarity often ensues.

Makes sense to merge the subs in my eyes. Maybe just keep a separate OMM tab for the DO peeps who will benefit from that discussion.

As if the eliminate-all-DOs brigade wasn't already enough of a problem to deal with on the osteopathic forum.
Maybe we could have a separate subforum for people who actually want to be DOs?

The most rational answer is to have a separate DO forum for all DO related topics, like OMM, new schools, DO residency questions, etc.

Any med school general threads (classes, resources, general medical school issues) get posted here.

There is really no sense in a DO asking a question about biochemistry help or something in one forum when it pertains to both.

Those rampant school openings affect us MD students as well. It is a totally pertinent topic for all medical students regardless of degree.

Its not a war on DOs. I'm just recently looking at the "Med Student" side of SDN and both osteo/allo threads have low user feedback. Its mostly 10 frequent users and the mods going back and forth.

To increase the general activity of the medical student forum, I propose we merge Allopathic and Osteopathic subforums.

There could be an optional Thread topic tag for MD or DO (just like there is a USMLE or COMLEX tag in the Exams subforum).

I understand why there are separate pre-allo and pre-osteo subforums, but there are far fewer med students than pre-meds on these boards. I think we need a little consolidation.

Essentially, you want to make the medical student forums great again?

But the knuckle dragging DOs surely can't compete with the brainiac MD candidates for residencies!
Not as long as there are PDs who won't even look at DOs regardless of their scores, or who expect significantly higher scores from graduates of DO schools compared with graduates from even lower-tier MD schools.

Then perhaps one day we can become the change we wish for...... 😉

I will probably lurk less and contribute more if things were not so divisive. There is absolutely no need for two forums and given the upcoming merger, it makes even more sense to merge both forums. @Lee

Why keep the "allo and osteo" distinction even in the title. Why not just "current students" forum?
I think this section should be called "medical school" not "allopathic and osteopathic" which is clunky and ugly

I was thinking of renaming the forum to "Current Medical Students" or "Medical School Discussions". "Allopathic & Osteopathic" looks weird and redundant (we already have the MD and DO thread tags).

Allosteopathic or Osteoallopathic - whichever the ego prefers

Or to keep it consistent with the other forum names just "Medical"

HELL NO. I think that forum serves a very specific purpose and believe it is fulfilling that purpose well. It will just complicate things if the two forums merge.

I agree. The topics of interest for pre-MDs and pre-DOs are different. Pre-DOs are likely to get lost in a forum with pre-MDs that are not interested in the same topics. At this level, pre-MDs and pre-DOs need to be separate so that pre-DOs can help each other on topics of mutual interest.

Could you share some of these differences in interests?

Pre-DOs and Pre-Allo forums are currently separate. However, Allo and Osteo are merged.

This is so dumb -_-
Who even asked for this? I'm a DO student and I preferred a separate page. It made searching for stuff easier.
If I wanted a combined forum I would've gone to Reddit.

I like this but chanage the title to "Medical" and category to "Medical Forums [MD/DO]"

Allo/Osteo seems too cluttered

This way...it's much more in line with Dental Forums

There should have been a poll.
I bet 2 or 3 mods wanted this done and they just went with it.

Seems like majority of users in the medical student forums strongly supported merging the two forums together. The responses are obvious in this thread, and I suspect many users over in the former Osteo forums supported this measure as well.
