FYI: HERE'S A LITTLE BIO ABOUT ME.

18 years old. I began taking credit full time at my local Community College when I was a Sophomore in high school. I am a a high school Senior now, and will be graduating this June with my Associate's degree(114 college-level credits). I completed General Chemistry last year, and I'm finishing up General Biology right now. I will begin to shadow a Dentist in two weeks(hence the pre-health), and I have interviewed an Ophthalmologist and a Vascular Surgeon. I am transferring to University this June with a 3.7 GPA and will be taking Organic Chemistry over the Summer, and I am Majoring in Behavioral Neuroscience. This Fall, I will be an 18 year old COLLEGE Junior. I also have 300+ hours of volunteering and counting.

Good for you. You should look into issues such as taking pre-req's at CC which can be frowned upon or potentially not accepted at all by med schools. Also be sure to not let the success at a CC cause you to slack and fall behind at a university, I have never heard anything other than CC classes being a joke compared to real university level courses (not saying you can't do well in univ, just don't slack or expect it to be as easy necessarily). It is good for you to shadow and get an idea of the profession, but be acutely aware that shadowing is completely different than performing that job and that most people who go into med school wanting to be a ________, end up changing to something else once they hit clinical years. I do want to congratulate you on your work thus far, you are on a good path to getting into med schools, but as you repeatedly show, you may have junior college standing, but you very clearly show the naivete and maturity of a teenager...

Oh okay, but like you said he handled his money (investments) wisely. You made it look like anyone who goes into EM can afford what he can. The guy is in his 50's (I think) so maybe all that money accumulated after years of being a doctor.

Thanks for reply man. I have thought about the issue with CC credit, but honestly, I'm not too worried about it. I won't be applying to any top 10 schools or anything. I will be taking Physics, OChem, and Biochem at my University, so I believe if I show I can do well in those classes, there won't be an issue. My #1 school clearly states on the website that CC credits are fine. Oh, and our Chemistry labs were actually from the University, so it's not like we just glided along effortlessly.

I don't believe I have said anything out of the line on this thread(but maybe you're talking about the Cologne thread I started? haha). If you are talking about me saying "You don't know me bro", then that was just a a response to you making broad assumptions about my academics. No harm done; this is an online thread after all.

Just going off on a tangent here, but I see you are an accepted Medical Student........I start OChem in a month at University, so if you have any tips for studying(and are willing to share them), please let me know in a message. No one is criticizing your academics. In fact, congrats on doing well. I think the point people were making was that your view and approach towards thinking about adult life is naive and shows maturity of a teenager. Which seems about right.

But, whatever, keep on trucking. For OChem - every like 3-5 lectures take a long study session and make a set of notes for review. Create a list of functional groups + properties & a concise list of all reactions ever brought up in class (and next to them write what they do, what makes them unique, and if there is specificity).

To go back to the hours emergency physicians work topic… they can very easily work only 3 shifts a week. Heck a lot work 2 for a total of 8 shifts a month. It's definitely high burn out though. I'd make sure you're not dead set on any particular specialty until you've tried quite a few because you will definitely change your mind. Even after shadowing you may understand some of the day to day responsibilities but you won't know how it actually feels to do that stuff day in and day out for an extended period of time.

I always wanted to be an emergency nurse and then emergency physician but being a pawn of the hospital admitting patients constantly and being overworked sounds miserable for 10+ years so that option has dropped down on my list. I think I'd be much happier splitting time between hospital and outpatient or another less high pressure setting. It's not that I can't handle the pressure but it eventually builds and gets tough at times when you work 12's, odd hours, and don't have more say in how things should work. You'll understand exactly how a ton of physicians and other healthcare workers feel once you start working in the hospital. Until then it's just rainbows and butterflies.

Also, I think taking CC credits in high school and doing well isn't a problem at all. Especially if you end up taking upper level classes at university and do fine too.

OK so I see a couple of problems here that you should sort out in college by taking some economics and history classes.

1. You seem to believe that people "earn" their money which is just totally false. The money you earn is determined by demand. It just so happens that people "demand" the quality of life of their skin health affords (as they should, the skin is the body's first line of defense and should be cared for) much more than whatever they gone into the ER for. ER is the new primary care for most people and those people are going to be ungrateful, unhappy, wrecks, unable to pay for the care, and usually extremely sick or underhanded. Dermatologists definitely "earn" their money, they provide a very valuable service to society and are your future medical colleagues. Don't down on your future friends. There's no such thing as "earning" your paycheck, capitalism has nothing to do with utilitarianism. If you really want to "earn" money then invest your capital in other businesses or other people - that's the real value of money, using it to create jobs and wealth for others and yourself. Generally I just don't think you understand money, but that's fine because youre 18.

2. EM is ****ing hardcore. Don't let those "3 shift weeks" fool you. You have been to the ER 3 times but you have never shadowed a doc in person. I've been in the ED multiple times and let me tell you that it takes a special kind of person to want to do that job. If that's you, brilliant. We need good emergency docs. But don't pretend you understand burnout when you have probably never been doing what they do for years on end. Save that judgement for third year clinicals.

3. It doesn't matter if these people here "don't know you", cut it out with that crap. They still know more than you.

Dude, I highly doubt you had accomplished anything near what I have when you were 18. I can't force you to believe what I said, but I can live with the personal gratification that I am already far ahead of everyone else my age. I'm not even sure that you are a Dermatologist, as I would expect someone who could obtain a job of that status would have better things to do then make fun of a teenager online.

I know, working 3 12-hour shifts a week is considered fulltime for EM. A lot of women who have kids will only work 2 days a week like you pointed out. The other poster doesn't know what he's talking about. As for the CC credit issue, if anyone finds schools that don't accept CC credit, then send me the list and I won't apply to those schools. I found out YALE accepts CC credit, so I'm not worried at all. As far as I know, some schools even accept AP credit? I never took any AP classes though because I was always fulltime at the college. Thanks for the reply though man!

I have to tell you that you sound pretty high on yourself. You're accomplishments are well noted, but at the end of the day it's still all for naught. What you fail to realize is that there is a high likelihood that when you go to interview next year your lack of experience in the real world (and I do mean real world, not even clinical world) will be evident and lead to many rejections. You're immaturity is bursting at the seams in just about every sentence of your posts. It sounds like a couple of gap years before applying would really help you out -- which might I add, there is no problem with.

At 18 let me tell you, you may feel like you got it all figured out, but you don't. You live at home with Mom & Dad still and the world is not the way you think it is. People aren't going to give you the time of day because you graduated 2 years early by doing CC classes in high school. You talk about wanting to "earn" your money? Well first I agree with @Lucca but why don't you first work on "earning" the respect you seem to want to command.

P.S. - It's kind of funny that you speak down towards some specialties cause you feel they don't earn their pay, but post with this hubris that you yourself did not earn.

tldr; You aren't hot ****. Stop acting like you are above people.

This type of mindset is one of the reasons physicians just roll over and do things like unpaid clerical work and don't get paid nearly as much as they should. ("What doctor, you won't see me for free?! But I thought you cared about people!")

More to the point OP, there still is money to be made in medicine. However, pouring thousands into debt for 4 years and then making about 50/k for the next 3-5 years out of med school is a pretty inefficient way to go about doing it.

Smart risk takers are the ones who can make a lot of the real money. The ones who quit their jobs to start their own companies….not physicians who (for the most part) are just getting a salary from up above.

well going the MD route is significantly lower risk, still arguably high reward, but what you trade for the low risk is i) delay & long schooling + ii) long work hours.

oh yeah, and most startups fail.

You may be ahead of the peers around you now, but just wait until you (if you are lucky enough) get to interviews at medical schools (especially top tier since you consider yourself Yale material), you will very quickly realize your accomplishments are nothing compared to some of the people around you, and if you live your life based on your ego that you are better than the people around you, you will quickly become one of the kids who gets extremely depressed and fail their classes when you realize you are at best average in med school. Sure, be proud of what you have done/are doing, but you really should learn to value yourself on who you are vs. what you have done compared to others, there is always someone much better than you, especially when you go for med schools that accumulate many of the best and brightest.

This is hardly the cause/even one of the main reasons why physicians end up being compensated less than maybe they should be for their time, but that is a whole series of additional threads that already exist.

You are in Derm, yet you still don't know how to read before you speak. I'm taking Ochem, Biochem, and Physics at University, and will be applying to whatever schools fit my GPA and MCAT scores.

I never said I consider myself Yale material. Work on your reading comprehension. I said Yale accepts CC credit. I do realize that once I get to Medical school, I'll probably only be average.......I'm okay with that though.

Most people working startups are putting in as many, if not more, hours than a physician in training. I've never known a successful businessman that wasn't putting in 80-100 hours a week well into his 30s. People seem to forget how much work it takes to build a successful company from the ground up, and act like if they weren't going into medicine, they could put in 40 hour weeks and pull 500k a year in the business world with little effort.

I will most likely take a gap year and work. I wouldn't have noted any of my accomplishments if other posters wouldn't have made the broad assumption that since I was 18, I must not be taking college courses.

Anyone halfway intelligent could start taking CC classes in high school without a problem. Anyone at my high school was free to take CC courses at no cost if they so chose, which many did. A few even graduated with associates degrees. It isn't all that special, and shows only that you have foresight. What you don't seem to have is maturity, life experience, or any degree of humility, something that will murder you come interview time.

How is it foresight, when most medical schools will not take your grades in med school prereqs at a community college seriously? If he truly had foresight, he would know not to take those classes at a community college.

You're right. I have accomplished nothing at all. Yes, let me go back to age 18 and drudge up my college applications and high school scrapbook so that I remember everything I accomplished up to that point.

Because it was the best thing I could academically at the time........better than AP classes.

You do know that community college classes are taught at a very low level right? Lower than a 4 year university. You do know that after AP classes you take an exam and get a score back giving you credit, right?

Fulltime at CC is better than taking 2-3 AP classes.

I was referring to students getting their AA or AS for free during high school, with "you" as a general descriptor, not specific to his case.

If he does well on his science courses going forward, he will probably be able to get into a medical school. Maybe not a top 20, but he'll get in somewhere. There's threads about several successful nontrad applicants in the past that did all of their prereqs at CC that later got into medical school.

No, it has nothing to do with being spectacular. Most people move on with their lives. There are tons of people who were "spectacular" in high school and fizzled out. If you think community college courses are taught better than AP courses with an exam or a university class, you are definitely not informed.
