They "lease" it to you for four years, after which you own it. So essentially, yes, you get a laptop. And you get to keep it. But trust me, you pay for it...ha ha ha.
I'd never seen a student laptop with fingerprint locks until Duke.
Thanks for answering all these questions! I get more and more excited about Duke every day (though I still have a long way to go until I can compete with FCD's enthusiasm 😉).
yea, and from what i understand, the "lease" is just so that they are responsible for taking care of it as long as you are there, including giving you a loaner computer if your computer breaks down for some reason. and if it's totally broken and shattered, apparently they will replace it with a completely new one? (am i wrong, guys?)

Also - even though the fingerprint locks are kind of nifty they're about the only good thing about these lappies. They're heavier than hell, ugly, and they overload them with so much crap I'm tempted to format mine and start from scratch but then I'd have to deal with James the IT guy getting annoyed at me and that's never fun.

when i worked in a lab as a duke undergrad 3 years ago there was a med student doing her third year research in the same lab. she had an apple laptop from the med school. i dont know if duke now has a long-term deal with ibm (lonovo) for laptops but i do know for a fact that med students have had apple laptops before.
I suspect that many of my classmates would prefer apple computers. Except for me...b/c I am dumb and would have to learn how to use one...ha ha ha.

Dook, I just ordered my first mac the other day. Should be here either tomorrow or the next day. I'm tellin you, buddy, if anyone is bad with computers it's me. All you have to do is try a mac, and you will fall in love. But have someone who knows how to use them close by... I was in need of assistance the first few times 🙄
In undergrad there was a mac right next to where I did most of my research stuff. I tried to use it, but it was so frustrating. WHERE IS MY RIGHT CLICK BUTTON!!?!?!!? It was like suddenly not having an opposable thumb or something...

yea.... for 393 a month, i get a nice pool to sit by and tan in the lovely 78 degree spring that we're having, while i read pharm notes.
it's interesting that while i'm reading about how antidepressants suck at making people feel better, i'm feeling much peachier today from about 1 hour of tanning.
now if i could only remember to get some cold smirnoff twists to bring to with me to the pool tomorrow. that would go great with the alcohol lectures 🙂

FWIW, Lenovo has a big office in RTP. I don't know if that has any influence, but I'm also assuming some of the software like webslide viewer doesn't have a version for OSX.
Yeah, I think it's mixed berry. I'm a fan of the raspberry ones, personally, although lately I've been getting Bacardi Silver (the orange is the best) instead of Smirnoff Twists because they taste more or less the same, and the Bacardi is usually cheaper. Clearly, I'm not too choosy about these things.
I'm loving the warmer weather (82 in Virginia today!), partly because my favorite drinks are "in season". Frozen daiquiris, mojitos, pina coladas... not that I'm an alcoholic or anything, but I do like my rum. 😀 I'm small, Asian, and female, a combination that usually means I can't hold my liquor to save my life, but I'd never turn down a good mojito.
You'll fit right in at Duke...
I'm guessing this thread has been hijacked by women guessing from the girly drink talk... 🙄 (as I try to pretend I didn't drink girly drinks when I first started drinking cuz I didn't like the taste of beer... hehe) God... a mojito sounds freaking amazing right now!

I am totally with you on this one. I bought my first Mac about three years ago after much fretting about right-clicking, home/end keys, and backspace/delete. I still don't like that it takes two keys to do home/end and backspace/delete (though I've gotten used to it and get confused when I use a PC), but the right click thing has been solved in the most recent laptops: If you make the trackpad tap-clickable, two fingers tapping at once is a right click (easy!), and two fingers dragging scrolls - possibly the best mousing improvement in the last decade. No more searching for the scrollbar.
As for compatibility with Windows software, Macs run Windows now, so let's get Macs! Petition anyone?

Ya I thought that you could use right-click if you just plugged in a normal mouse to a mac... altho it's not quite the same... it's still baller. Biggest thing I always have to remember is CTRL no longer serves the same function 😕

Here is the deal. I leave for a conference this Friday and I won't be back until next Thursday. Thus, I'm not really sure how much internet time I am going to have. So here is the deal. Who here thinks they can keep up the duties of the countdown??? Ideally, I'm thinking husky, byong, ryan... or someone else who is waitlisted. If not, we could go with DrD, Embellis, Naty, or even one of our friendly M1s. Either way, we must keep the countdown going... it is imperative to all of us getting off of the WL. Anyhoo... ttyl.
