Hey guys,

I got a call earlier today and got in off of the waitlist. I'm very excited because I really love Duke. Best of luck to everybody tomorrow. I'm trying to decide between UNC (in-state) and Duke now. The price difference is enormous, so we will see with financial aid soon. I did have one question though... I knew that we could only claim one acceptance past May 15th. Up until this point it didn't matter because I only had the one acceptance, but does this rule apply to me as well since it is not yet midnight on the 15th and I found out today? Surely I'm not supposed to make a decision in 12 hours, especially since I don't have a letter in hand yet? I think I have two weeks to let Duke know something.

There are tons of people making that decision every year, so don't feel alone, whichever way you go. OK, not tons, because that would imply at least 100 something people had to make that decision....anyway, if you have any questions for someone who ended up choosing UNC (against his loyalties, to boot), you can PM me. Plus, Duke Med gets all their softball players from UNC, anyway...

Congratulations, seriously.

However, does this make anybody else's heart just ache: to know that people are already getting calls? I'm not kidding. I honestly get that feeling inside like when you are REALLY hungry and then your stomach cramps or something.

sigh.

i feel your pain. sorry to keep *butting in* to the duke thread, but i feel this way a million percent. 4 people got calls from my #1. i had just gotten home with dinner when i checked SDN. needless to say, 2 hours later, my sandwhich from subway is still sitting on my desk...uneaten. it's a double-edged sword...i'm happy there's WL movement and happy for the people who are getting into their dream school....but depressed that my phone has been painfully silent....

Here we go!

0 days until May 16th :luck: :luck: :luck:

!!!!

diosa, mrburns, or incoming students- by any chance do you know approximately how many have accepted Duke offers and how many are to be filled? i'm crazy slash anxious slash nervous right now.

i know that i'll definitely be drinking tonite. whether it will be for celebration or for consolation, the time will tell. but i'll definitely be drinking.

Good luck to everyone waiting for a phone call today...hope you get the good news you are waiting for.

A couple of my classmates have said that as of last week, 80 people turned in deposits. However, I don't know if that means they're definitely coming to Duke or not...

Hang in there! Good luck to everyone waiting today! And remember, if you don't get a call today it does NOT mean you can't get one later in the summer.

*waiting for the onslaught of acceptances* good luck people, i really have nothing productive to say, just wanted to bump this to the top.:luck:

I keep thinking that my cell phone is ringing when it is not. 🙂 At about 10 A.M. I received a call from a similar area code. I grabbed my phone and ran to a quiet room in my office. It was Bell South. ):

I keep thinking that my cell phone is ringing when it is not. 🙂

I know the feeling :scared: ....does anyone else feel like :barf: .... waiting patiently...I wish they could give like a probable time frame that they might make calls, sort of like the cable guy does...good luck everyone!:luck: :luck:

I am currently skipping a class because I can't get cell phone reception in the lecture hall...haha! Good luck to everyone! :luck: :luck: :luck:

what does happen if you miss the call? do they call again, do they leave a message?

patience, focused, patience....sorry I need to feel like I'm not talking to myself!

You gotta love getting phone calls every 5 minutes from people asking if you have heard yet from duke..."umm no and by the way you just gave me a mild heart attack by calling my phone at this hour, so thanks" ...ughh this is worse than waiting for a letter...it has the element of a surprise attack

Getting calls from clients when all you want to think about is one call.:scared: 😱

hi all, been lurking since late april but haven't posted before. i found some of your posts quite useful (i've been wl'ed at 5 schools... incl duke...) so i thought i'd share what little info i have with everyone.

called earlier today, was told that waitlist could potentially move until day before classes start (as it said in RW's original letter)... but was also told that "we're set unless there are any withdrawals".

i assume no more phone calls today unless someone at duke gets off the waitlist elsewhere and decides to leave.... 🙁

hmm early afternoon has come and gone and not a peep from anyone on here...any advice/news from the current students?

Mmmm burnsie, pagemma and I weren't in school today, so we don't know anything. Maybe one of the others...

Does anybody have the huevos to call and corroborate Mr. 1-Post ?

Did we decide that they will give us information about potential ranking on the waitlist?

I just did call and to my utter dismay, it is confirmed. He said they have only offered a handful of waitlisters an acceptance offer(i.e. count on one hand he said) and that as of now the class is full and he does not anticipate any more waitlist calls being made until june 1st or later if at all...and he says the waitlist is "not ranked" so as far as where people fall on the waitlist, he can't provide any help...unfortunately i think this is the nail in the coffin for me as far as duke, I can't put my alternate plans on hold any longer...au revoir and good luck to those attending duke in the fall...congrats to females again

ouch. good luck, husky. Where will you be attending, then?

I was thinking, we've all heard that the admissions people really shape their class. They try and fill withdrawal seats with similar people, right? Does this mean I need to find all of the white, male, upper-middle-class, mormon acceptants with too much time on their hands and start whacking (think the sopranos) them one by one until I'm finally offered a spot?

(that's a joke, people)

sigh again.

Just curious-anyone know how they select people from those on the list?

Wow...I wish this little piece of info had been leaked earlier. Congrats FCD and others. I guess I'll still wait but make more concrete plans elsewhere. Very dissapointed...

false hope it was.
i'm a bit suprised with such a low waitlist movement.
i guess those new merit scholars must have contributed at least some extent

Congrats to those who have gotten the call and are off the waitlist! FCD, especially, that is awesome!

I am still on my thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail. I hiked into Harper's Ferry (half-way point of the trail, 1000 miles) today and hoped to get news from home but alas, it looks like it is not to be. Looks like I will hike another 1000 miles and then head for UNC.

Looks like UAB for me...I was too much of a wuss to make the move to new york and I really liked UAB's facilities and new curriculum...where is everyone else headed?....yeah I guess the kind-hearted informing the wailisters that no more calls would be made today or possibly for the rest of this month or possibly for good would be too much to ask from duke adcom...and they were so nice on interview day 🙁

I understand you're disappointed in the minimal waitlist movement that has occured thus far, but I don't think cursing the Duke Adcom is necessarily the way to go. From what I can gather, you have many other great options as do most of us and we should be grateful for what we have. There are plenty of others in positions not nearly as lucky as our's. That being said, Duke has been (and will continue to be) my top choice all the way up until July 30th - if any of you other overly optimisic people want to join me in this bandwagon I would enjoy the company. It may be a long ride ... but I think some of us are willing to go until the end. Keep smiling. 🙂

I'm with you Rin-Rin! I think any negative comments made towards the adcom are unintentional. I'm sure everyone has experienced moments when emotions gets the most of you. Emotions were running high today. I don't think anyone is mad, just shocked at the minimal alternate list movement. Anyways, life goes on...

Oh yeah sorry, I wasn't really being serious, should have clarified. I have been doing research at duke and it is an AMAZING place and the adcom people are genuinely nice and extremely accomplished(i.e. dr. armstrong). i was more saying that they were so nice on interview day, so showing some of that comforting kindness now would be awesome..definately no ill-will towards duke though in any way shape or form..I am more just impatient and dont think i can hold out until july to know my plans for the next 4 years...still keeping a slight bit of hope though on duke..very slight 😉

Hey everyone, just wanted to say that I'm really sorry to hear there was such a small amount of waitlist movement today, but don't give up. Other schools will have movement, which will bump some people from going to Duke to places like Harvard, Hopkins, Penn, wherever else someone prefers to Duke. Keep writing and making it known that Duke is your first love. It's definitely not over yet!

So jump on with me (for a bit) ... you can sit in the cart on the back and hold on to UAB if you'd like .... 😉

And that was not meant to really attack you - just merely trying to bring a bit more sunshine back into the forum.

Hey yall... thanx again a million times over for all of the congratulatory wishes. I couldn't have gotten thru all of this without yall on this thread also. It was definitely a two-way street. To those of you with whom I have grown close on this thread, I hope that everything works out for you. Husky, UAB is a great place and no need to get your head down. You are the man! Ryan and byong, keep your heads up and there is still the chance of a call this summer. To the rest of yall newer folks, I wish yall all the best of luck as well. To everyone, keep the dream alive, and I hope everything works out for you in the end!!! :luck: 😍 :luck: 😍

Just to throw in my two cents. I find solace in the fact that most things happen for a reason which is in most cases out of our hands. I'm just thankful, as I'm sure the rest of you are, that we have other Medical Schools to attend in the Fall. I have numerous friends who haven't been accepted anywhere yet. In my opinion, I feel honored to have even been considered for the Duke class of 2011 and consider having even been put on the waiting list an accompishment, as I'm sure many of you guys on SDN had scores and backgrounds that blew mine out of the water. Anyways, let me get off my soap box. My advice, just keep on keepin' on. Good luck to all Duke Thread Posters in y'alls future endeavors.

It is ridiculous to think it is over because the May 16 date was billed as the moment of decision when it is not. You make your decision or lose 100 bucks. There are plenty of people who are still on the fence and this date is insignificant. It was never was to be trusted as decision day. The 2 who got in were called prior to today and the calls I think have been going on since mid March as their website states. For those on the waitlist, nothing has changed. Nada. You have the same hopes you had yesterday and - of course the class is full until there are withdrawals- and has been for 2 months. But decisions by the acceptees are still ongoing and 100 dollars is a small rent to pay to decide the best place to spend 4 years of your life. Not to mention waiting for a space at another place to open up. What lousy docs we will make if we base our decisions and moods on noncredible info! :biglove:

I would still love to join everyone at Duke. 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀

Alas, if only Duke would join me.:hardy: :hardy: :hardy:

Should we start counting down to July 27th? 🙂

How are you guys going about finding roommates? Or are most of you planning on living alone?

while true, it seems from last year's thread that no one on SDN got off the waitlist after may 16. my pre-med advisor contacted one of the admissions committee members at duke med to take a look at my file. she told him that i would have been admitted had i applied to their mstp not md-only program due to my weak clinical experiences and strong research track (i guess 100 hrs of hospital volunteering don't cut it). of course, i don't 100% buy this because the reason i applied to duke md-only was because of the research opportunity duke offers during third-year. but i guess this explains why i had more mstp interviews than md-only interviews. another thing she told my advisor is that for first time in years, there most likely won't be any waitlist movements this year. she said there may be a very few but quite unlikely. i am sure there maybe 2-3 people off the waitlist by end of july but nothing like it has been past few years. unfortunately, i don't think it is "ridiculous" to think that today was a key date to assess whether we will get in or not. and i, too, am very very sad that i won't be going to duke this fall, but i guess that's the reality. and life goes on. 🙁

How are you guys going about finding roommates? Or are most of you planning on living alone?
Perhaps it would be more appropriate and considerate to post that in the class of 2011 thread. Just a thought.

So, apparently the acceptances off the waitlist went out on friday, not today, and there were only a handful (4-5) calls made (or so rumor has it). There are a few in my class who came off the waitlist after May 16th, but I don't know how many, and I have no idea what the expectations are for this year. Good luck to everyone, though, wherever you end up!

First, I thought you weren't going to Duke... but second, since it sounds like you are, we have a facebook group... its like Duke Med 2011 or something like that... just come onto that cuz alotta ppl are talkin about housing these days... im not sure how many ppl actually check that allo class thread 😀

Wow, I'm really sorry to hear about the waitlist situation, guys. 🙁 I would've loved to have every one of you as a future classmate.

Keep your chins up, though. As others have mentioned, it's not over yet, and even despite that, I know all of you have some great alternatives. You guys definitely can't go wrong, no matter what happens with Duke admissions. I wish you all the best of luck, and do keep us posted if you get that magic phone call from a 919 area code!

It's unlikely I would go to Duke if I got off the WL (due to financial aid), but those who do want to go should not neccessarily loose all hope yet. Nationwide, a number of people hold multiple acceptances post May 15, people defer every year, and people get off the waitlist at other schools. Even if it is a longshot, it is still a shot nonetheless.

I decided not to go, but it was also because during 2nd look @ Durham, someone shouted a racial slur at me one of the nights downtown. :barf:

Hey wow. This happened to me when I visited Duke for Ugrad. Didn't even bother applying there after that incident. F'ing hicks =P
