speaking of procedures, is anyone else excited to do DREs in 2 months? especially after today's exciting review of prostate cancer, i'm so ready to start palpating for abnormal posterior hardness.

btw... my post count still dominates. RAWR!

I'll be honest, I'm not exactly "excited" about it...I'd rather do 100 pelvic exams before I stick my finger up someone's butt. But I guess I'll get used to the idea. After all, it wasn't too long ago the idea of sticking my finger up a vagina wasn't exactly enticing either.

I feel like I'd rather do a DRE b/c it will not take as long as a pelvic. And you don't have to get right down there looking at it. Yuck.

Then came the tequila party. 😱

No, just kidding. But someone had to say it. 😀

i feel like there needs to be a 2nd year tequila party next year... you're not a true dukie unless you make out with more than half your classmates in one night.

Well, FCD, WLG7, and I will be roommates next year...perhaps a first year-second year-UNC tequila party should be planned? After all, you're not a Dukie unless you make out with half of your class and half of another class. And this time, diosa can't escape for half the party into her bedroom.

And pagemma...you're disgusting 🙂

Yep! 😀 No, these Acid/Base lectures are disgusting. On to PROSTATES!

No, I'll just escape into yours. I'm 2 for 2 as far as parties at this house go 😱

So I guess my living arrangement is going to be rather interesting next year ....

hey guys,

anyone has any idea about the apts in Croasdaile crossing. I will most proabably end up there. Anyone know if it will be convenient to bike to school from teh croasdaile apts. I am trying to see if I can postpone buying a car. My roommate will have her car though. There is just so many additional expenses with moving in and everything, just trying to get a sense if I absolutely need a car in my first semester.

Also can any of the current first years let me know if having a part time job is a wise idea? Do you guys have classmates with a job? If yes, where do most people work? labs, tutoring?or is it completely out of the question.

Thanks guys and will appreciate your response🙂

Yeah, seeing where Croasdaile is it is def. convenient to bike to school - it will prolly take less time to ride your bike to school than it will to drive, park in PG3, and then walk the rest of the way in. However, it can get pretty tough to do grocery shopping, etc without a car but you can borrow your roomies' for that. A lot of people carpool at the beginning of the year, too.

You can def. pull off having a part-time job for the first half of the year; 2nd half might be a little tougher since there's just so much material and it all comes at you fast. Some people have jobs w/ Kaplan or Princeton Review, and one guy held a volunteer firefighting job for a while. Retail or something equivalent would def. be doable for blocks 1-3; 4 gets rough, though, but I'm sure you could pull it off if you're motivated.

hey Pagemma,

Thanks for your response. Do you guys usually stay late on campus to study, say in the libraries? I guess the reason I am asking is to determine if I will have to bike back home late at night. If yes, I wonder how safe that is?

Where you study is really up to you. Some of our classmates study in the library (either medical or undergrad) or other places on campus. I usually study at home unless I'm being super ineffective. Did you study in your room as an undergrad, or in the library? Also, if you get here and find the bike isn't working out, you can always buy a car, you'll eventually need one anyway.

did you any of you get a car from NC? any suggestions? I don't have a car, so i'll have to get one. I live in NY and don't want to get a car from here...

Getting a car down south is smarter....less rust potential....

As for getting a job first year...don't. When you get out in the real world in like 4 or 5 decades [joking on the time...sorta], just work two extra days and go, "Well, there is the $$ for that part time job that would have made my life harder in medical school."

Does anybody bike from the Lenox apartments?

Personally, I wouldn't bike to and from campus. First of all, Durham roads hate bikers...the bike lanes are tiny, if there at all. Second, you don't want to feel forced to leave school earlier so you can get get back while it's still light out (I personally wouldn't bike at night). And third, Duke has always had a problem with stolen bikes. If you do decide to bike, make sure you get a good lock.

Driving every day has to get old. I'm definitely up for carpooling.

Does Duke have any programs to assist spouses of employees/students in seeking employment or admission to the university?

I bought my car before I got here, but I'd recommend craigslist if you're going to buy used. You'll get a much better deal buying from an owner than you would at the dealer. I'd also recommend craigslist for those of you buying furniture once you get here. It's just so much cheaper. I could have paid less for real furniture on craigslist than I did for my crappy build-it-yourself Walmart/Office Max furniture. So if you can, get here a week or two early, and start surfing what's for sale.

:wow: Things to look forward to in two months.

you don't know the half of it 🙂

:scared:

Hey so I have an actual question too since everyone seems to be asking questions today... as far as bringing a car from out of state, am I going to have to get NC licence plates??? I guess I also have to get an NC driver's licence also right???

You do not have to register your car in NC or get a NC driver's license if you are in the state as a student. However, if you are interested at the MPH program at UNC, you have to be a NC resident, which means you will need to do the above. It is also somewhat difficult to maintain your car as registered out of state because you have to get your registration renewed (which you can often do online) and inspected (which varies depending upon the state your car is registered in). You can, in fact, register your car in NC with an out of state license, which is another option. I registered my car here and got an NC license, so if you have any questions about it, I can answer them.

They're actually on facebook. The tequila party pics, on the other hand, were burned by diosa.

Actually, I sent the ones of you to Girls Gone Wild. Thats why they kept calling you.

Thanks, diosa. I'll prolly ask u some more ?s about it later.

I've seen White Coat Party pics so I have some idea what's in store for us. :hardy:

Oh yes... I almost forgot about those pics. Hey, pagemma, what is that pic of you with no pants on and just a t-shirt? Ya... that's right... I just called you out on sdn. 😍

i like how we can track how close we are to a test by how active this thread becomes.

and FCD.... a better question would be....in which pictures are pagemma actually fully clothed? 😀

Do the upperclassmen pass down copies of old tests/study materials?

Pagemma always has the same look on her face in every picture: the look that says "I want you, Cameraman." She could be having her picture taken for her grandmother's 80th birthday photo album and it'd be the same thing.

But that's why we love her.

Yes, but last year the course directors found out about it and were annoyed (because they often reuse the same questions) so now they won't allow us access to hard copies of the test to copy. So there aren't a lot of newer tests - some are missing from last year, and some (if not all) will be missing from this year.

You guys had to ruin it for everybody! 🙂

Ya, I imagine she wouldn't have her pants on at her granny's 80th either??? :meanie:

Not us! The class of 2009. I guess when the course directors found out they had it, they made a bunch of the tests really hard, not realizing that every other year up until then had had it too, and ended up failing a bunch of ppl. Luckily, they took it a little easier on us.

well, it's not like she would have been alone in that regard.... i think exhibitionism is hereditary, most likely X linked. you just won't appreciate her granny all that much.😉

whoa, i've never heard this story, last year's people did say their tests were really hard but, i feel like out tests are just as hard 🙁

I suppose that one advantage of Duke Manor or Chapel Towers is the free shuttle service they have for mornings and afternoons to get you to West Campus close to the med school. Living at Chapel Towers for two years, I did that for many years. I suppose if you wanted to save the environment and didn't want to ride a bike, that would be one way to do it. But otherwise, yes, you need a car. And yes, Duke Manor has more undergrads and grad students who tend to be more rowdy.

I still have a 3-br townhouse available after July 15 (which I posted in the Marketplace), and I'm sure a few people in my neighborhood have rented out to graduate students too.

As for programs to assist spouses of students, I'm guessing there is something through the student services office. Employment at Duke though is rather difficult to get in, but very nice once you are in. Kinda like getting into med school.

Hey,

Hadn't posted in a while but just wanted to chime in on some living situations in durham. I saw some posts mention duke manor. I assume they are referring to the duke manor right across from duke north hospital? I would highly suggest not living there. It has one of the worst crime rates in the city of durham. I have known three people who have lived/live there and they have all had break-ins either to their cars or apartments or both. I have only heard really bad things about it. Just throwing that in. Also, I know people in Belmont and during the school year it is mostly all undergrads and always loud/ lots of undergrad parties. Anywho just be careful in terms of places really close to the hospital because there are many that traditionally have bad safety records.
