Duke Part III - Can't get enough :)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I refuse to be a part of this Grey's Anatomy lovefest, so I'll start my own conversation exalting Scrubs by periodically posting great quotes, most of which you non-viewers would be unable to appreciate. Begin.

Janitor: I always get this way in the fall. You know the summer's gone, the days are shorter, it just makes me feel so...what's the word...
J.D.: Sad?
Janitor: Yes, that's it. I'm a janitor, so I couldn't think of the word "sad." I was gonna say, 'it makes me feel so mop.'

I'm pretty interested in finding out how they're going to wrap up the whole "Dr. Burke Just Disappearing" thing. I mean, yes, it would be easy for him to get a job anywhere given that he's supposedly the best CT surgeon out there in fantasyworld but wouldn't there be all kinds of red tape and crap for him to jump through? Sheesh.

Then again, I guess there would have been no way Dr. M-S could have started working on those patients down in CA w/o some kind of insurance red tape to go through . . .

Glad to hear TK's back for another season, though! I like him. I also hope they bring back the pompous british ass who was trying to snipe Christina back. I liked him too.

And just so Burnsie doesn't feel left out. . .

J.D.: They actually arrested someone for stealing pudding and toilet paper?
Janitor: No, they found twenty bottles of Vicodin in his backpack. (beat) Wait, did you steal pudding and toilet paper?
J.D.: What? No! I hate pudding and I don't use... toilet paper... (Janitor stares) I have one of those French things that shoots water up your butt.
Janitor: Bidet?
J.D.: Bidet to you, sir.

YES, YES... I have sadly seen every episode of Scrubs. Anyone else here a fan of Laverne (rest her soul) or the Evil Eye?

Elliot: Oh, Dr. Cox, does this lipstick make me look like a clown?
Dr. Cox: No, Barbie, no... it makes you look like a prostitute who caters exclusively *to* clowns.
Elliot: I'm sorry, that was my mistake, I keep forgetting that you're a horrible, horrible person.
Dr. Cox: Ooh, Backbone Barbie.

Oh, how I want to be Dr. Cox.

To all Scrubs quoters: 😴 😴 😴

... really i should give Scrubs a chance cuz Grey's sucks these days anyway.

Scrubs quotes, I must join in.

Keith: How come I don't get a nickname?
JD: I'm sorry Keith, you just don't have anything I can work with.
Keith: My last name is dudemeister

Laverne: Marshmallow, before I got married I shared an apartment with a man too. His name was Jesus.

Wow... I guess I need to start watching as much Scrubs as possible.

I really love this new Super Poke thing on facebook. Anyone else get there Duke email accounts this weekend??? Embellis, I know you did. I changed that stuff on facebook so fast... I was like "zoom zoom zoom".

Can someone help me out with the following:

What type of laptop do we get from Duke?
Do we get to keep it all four years?
Will it have CD/DVD-RW capability?

Go there, get a # or email, and call them for the exact right answers. They are the ones in charge. We have lenovo thinkpads. Not sure if you guys are getting those too. You do keep it all 4 years. Not sure about the RW capability.

Does anyone else think Madden reminds you of EPLIV? Always on top of things.

Madden, that's a good thing BTW.

EPLIV: responsible enough to bring Cipro to the DR.
Me, Em, RR, and JB: not responsible, and paid the price.

You guys already have email accounts??!!

+pissed+

Hell yeah. I signed up within two hours of getting the letter. Of course, I already had four spam e-mails in my inbox... before I even knew I had an account.

Haha... I totally don't know how to use my email box. I put some spam settings up but I don't know what folder these things are being filtered to. This setup for email looks so ancient compared to my undergrad email account. Can someone teach me??? 🙁

Hey FCD, if you don't like the webmail interface/folders, you could just set up your email as a POP3 account rather than using the IMAP web-based system, and run the email into a third party client like Outlook or Mozilla Thunderbird - that way you could create your own folders/rules/spam filters and keep your mail on your home/laptop computer and leave it on the webmail server for several days after receipt. My little bro is going to Duke undergrad starting next year, so I just helped him set up his. Let me know if you're interested/want the instructions link.

I'm excited about getting the email addy too, I haven't gotten the letter yet, but I think it will make it feel more "official". 😀

JD: "Well I still want to refer you to a dermatologist but it looks benign to me."
Janitor: "Be-nine. . . nine and a half" *shrug*

GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE ON THEIR TESTS TOMORROW!!!

:luck::luck::luck:

Thanks, FCD . And in celebration of now being only ONE test away from finishing M1 (okay, make that one test, a research paper, 2 lab exams, and an oral exam for some people), I give you...another Scrubs quote.

Dr. Cox: I like this moment so much I want to have sex with it.
[later...]
Dr. Cox: This moment is so great, I'd cheat on that other moment from before, marry this one, and raise a family of tiny little moments.

And here's one of my all-time favorite 30 second clips.

It doesn't really matter now, because it's after May 15 but:

Does Duke use percentile based grading in the first year?

LOL... nice clip. Maybe I should watch Scrubs. When is it on... even if they are reruns? One more test to go ain't bad, Burnsie (well... one more test and all that other stuff). Either way, it's practically over for yall. Keep goin strong!!!

No. You are judged on your performance only....it doesn't matter if everyone else makes a 100 and you make a 91, you still get honors.

M-F or weekends too???
Watch it tonight and tell us what you think. No excuses! You have nothing else to do, except learn this dance

Dr. D, who do you find the most attractive: Eliott, Carla, or Jordan? I need input for the subject of next month's shrine in my bedroom. ROWWWWR.

No doubt about it.

How about you: Cox, Turk, Dorian, or (gasp) Kelso?

I'd like to see your face the first time you have to use your finger for examination purposes...

😱 nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo... ooo..

I'll go with Turk. And I agree with you on Jordan...I always thought she was pretty on the Drew Carey show. And Carla is pretty, too. Eliott is a little too spastic for me.

I agree with FCD about the email program. Can we get a straw poll from the Dukie's on what email client is the most popular to use? Do the PDAs that we're given during the second year run have email and if so, which client do they run?

I figure it may be easier to just use the client that is run on the PDA during the second year...

I don't think you can do that for your lotus notes email. Like I said, you get 2 emails - one is your initials and a number, which you can forward to any email account you want. The other is your [email protected], which is your lotus notes email account. We have it b/c we have to have some secured program for any "confidental" patient information we might receive or send. So basically everyone at the hospital uses this, and I'm pretty sure since it's a secure program, you can't have it forwarded to another email account. I could totally be wrong, but that's the impression that I got during orientation. The easiest thing to do is just have the email with your initials forwarded to your lotus notes.

I didn't watch Scrubs 🙁 I didn't see the post in time... sowwy 🙁 However, if it makes you feel any better, I also missed the program I was planning on watching last night also (Kyle XY Season Premiere).

ok guys, i just wanted to say, as much as i love y'all, i really need to wean off of this SDN. step one is to not post, so this will be my last post .... until the next admissions/2nd look rolls around.

so good luck with everything, i will see you next year! if not at school, then at my new place for baked goods! stressed rex = baked deliciousness 🙂 🙂 🙂

:luck::luck: to those still waiting on that waitlist, i hope we get to show you some love:luck::luck:

I think this is my last post for a while too. I should be dedicating my time to my wife (pregnant, cravings, and moody). She doesn't understand how addictive SDN is though...

Question about third year:

How is it viewed if you do research during the third year at an institution other than Duke? Specifically, does it hurt/help your chances of matching at Duke (e.g. optho, ortho, neurosurg, rads)?

I don't see how it could hurt your chances. If you want to match at Duke, you will want to get to know the people in whatever department you're interested in. That is easy enough once you decide what you want to do. Doing research here helps you really get to know these people better, and they can be a strong voice for you during the application process. However, if you go to another school or the NIH or something and do research, you will have other people behind you backing your application. So in that case you'd get to know the people here at Duke as well as gain some friends outside of Duke that could put in a good word for you. The bottom line is that it helps to get to know people. I don't mean this in a "connection" type of way since I absolutely can't stand "connections." I just mean that they will know you and see that you are the man....any program would probably rather have a student that they know is top notch rather than a student that looks top notch but that nobody within earshot has really interacted with. Plus, I think the fact that you'll be doing productive research within the field of your interest gives you a leg up anyway. The hardest part [as I have recently realized] is thinking about what you might want to do with your life. Once you decide, you can really pursue great research and pursue something you're really interested in while at the same time opening doors for residency.

BTW, we had some of these same conversations at a dinner tonight.... another nice thing about Duke--you can get funding for student interest groups. We took some of our funding and went to a nice dinner with a Duke resident to talk about stuff....lots of fun.

I, too, will be getting off of sdn starting Friday for I will be out of the country for 3 whole wks... ya, no sdn for 3 wks 😱 :scared: 😱

Anyhoo... I guess I'll get to meet all yall not too shortly after I get back to the states so happy summering to everyone and to all of the current M1s, good luck on yalls final tests. Have a great break and come back ready to show us n00bies the ropes 😀

It's actually the same e-mail account. (I just set up my e-mail account on Eudora yesterday, so I'm pretty sure this is how it works.) The [email protected] address is just an alias for the f(irst)m(iddle)l(ast)@duke.edu address... in other words, the system recognizes you as fcd, but if someone sends an e-mail to females.cantdriv, the system automatically recognizes it as being sent to fcd, and forwards it accordingly. So, you can actually set up e-mail forwarding for fcd, but you can't do that for females.cantdriv because it's not a real account. It's just an alias that routes mail to the fcd account.

So, you have two options if you don't want to deal with the webmail interface: 1) forward all the e-mails to a different e-mail address as diosa suggested, or 2) as TheDoctor recommended, use an e-mail client like Outlook, Outlook Express, Eudora, Thunderbird, etc., to access Duke's e-mail servers and send and retrieve your messages. Which one you decide really depends on how you use your e-mail and how you want to manage any other e-mail addresses. I have five e-mail addresses that I'm using right now, and it's nice to be able to manage all of them in one place by using an e-mail client.

As far as e-mail clients go, just poke around a little and see what you like best. I use Eudora (mostly because I like the buttons and the friendly little sound it makes when I get new mail), but it's sometimes slow about retrieving messages. People tend to dislike Outlook and Outlook Express for some reason, and security in Outlook used to be notoriously weak. I don't know if it still is now. Thunderbird and Mulberry are pretty good, though. I read somewhere that Duke recommends Thunderbird. The company that developed Mulberry recently went bankrupt or something, so it's no longer updating or providing support for the software, but it's still a good program. You can download it from Duke's OIT: http://www.oit.duke.edu/comp-print/software/list.html.

I'm not really a computer nerd... I just play one on SDN. 🙂

Update for the W/L'ers: I think there are two people who have withdrawn from Duke pretty recently (as in, the last week or so), since they were pulled off the waitlist at other schools and will be attending those schools instead (although why they would want to do that is absolutely incomprehensible to me 😉 ).

thanks embellis(!) for sharing the wl news. I know that stolen got off of hopkins waitlist, but I guess there is another person.

For other waitlisters, i did call the office a couple days ago because i was really curious regarding recent wl movement. the person who answered my phone call told me there hasn't been any. rw indicated on the email that there won't be any movement till ~3rd week of june, so perhaps that means they won't have any adcom meeting till around then?

i guess those two spots might be my last chance. i have already sent multiple LOIs since i got waitlisted. perhaps i need to send in video tapes! haha j/k

aw~ pick me pick me!!

aw~ pick me pick me!!

Good luck in the coming weeks byong!!! :luck: :luck: :luck:

Embellis, you might as well have been speaking Chinese to me cuz all of that computer talk made just about zero sense to me  😕

maybe if we take camp outside of the admissions office ... I have a tent! (j/k)
