Duke Part III - Can't get enough :)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
i think you need to state the thread objective.

Meh. We know what the objective is, we've been discussing it for 2,000 posts now.

For those who missed I & II, the thread objective is to express how much we all :biglove: Dook.

You're damn right!

I got the email from RW today... they received my check... and it's official

I'm not gonna lie... this thread is struggling... so I got this shirt idea for next year...

Front: If Med School was EASY...

Back: it would be called YOUR MOM.

This year, for our class sweatshirts, we tried to get a picture of the Duke Blue Devil putting on a latex glove with the slogan: "Duke Med 2010: We cram it in twice as fast." (or something like that) Unfortunately, the company refused to make it.

Hey - this question is targeted primarily at current DukeMed students. Since I'm a waitlister, I didn't get to come to second-look and drive around on the bus that they evidently had to look at apartments. I drove up to Durham last night to look at apartments for next year when I will be an MS1. I've been a freshman RA for nearly three years now, so I've decided I want to live absolutely alone for at least the first year to recover some of my peace, quiet, and sanity 😴 (so that means a 1 bedroom apartment until I find a roommate or my brother becomes a junior/senior at Duke undergrad and can join me). I drove around today to about 10 places I had made on a list to check out.

Belmont - I REALLY like how close it is to campus off LaSalle street (only about 1 to 2 minute drive over to the hospital). It seems fairly new, but more expensive and not as nice as what is farther out. Also, I was concerned that all the undergrads there would get on my nerves - but it seems that management is putting them up front and keeping the professional students sequestered in the back. Also gated and that seems nice with all of the carjackings I keep reading about.

North Pointe Commons - It's up north of Duke on Broad Street near the Costco - about 11 to 12 minute drive out. It seems like a slightly nicer apartment and a nicer, quieter neighborhood of professionals I'd prefer to come home to at night. Also about 80 bucks cheaper per month than Belmont and includes cable. Gated.

Alexan Farms - down South of Duke - really nice new apartments with a great layout down on Garrett Road off of 15-501, about 11 minutes out. Nice, quiet community. About the same price as North Pointe. Not gated.

Parc at University Tower (formerly known as Archstone) - really well-maintained place with a great kitchen south of Duke off 15-501 and University Drive. 10 minutes or so out. Gated.

I also visited and ruled out Deerfield, The Forest, Southpoint, Alexan Place, and Pinnacle Ridge. I also drove around the other apartments really near campus like Campus Walk, Duke Manor, etc and those felt unsafe. No offense if you or your friends live there - I just didn't feel they were a good match.

So... my questions to you all are... what do you think is more important? Having something more expensive really close by or having something quieter and nicer at night so you can study/sleep that is farther out? Do you find yourself running back and forth to home during the day, and would being closer be helpful during the gosh-awful hours of the clinical years? Also, do you prefer the areas north of Duke or to the south of Duke in terms of restaurants/shopping/living/etc? I'd appreciate any thoughts you guys have to share.

I live in North Pointe. I like it and will live here next here [but part of that is b/c I do not have time to move even if I wanted to move since I am getting married, etc., in my break]. The place is nicer than anywhere I lived in college. I will not go through the stuff it has since you just visited. I find I am definitely close enough to Duke for it to be super convenient. It is funny...I can actually ride my bike and get to school faster than if I drive since the walk from the parking garage is so damn far. If you have any specific questions about North Pointe, feel free to ask.

The Doctor- you'll find that the vast majority of med students live about 8-10 minutes away from campus. There are a few in our class who live within reasonable walking distance, but this really isn't the norm. Personally, I think you should go with a cheaper apartment that's a little farther away from campus, like Alexan Farms or Parc. Trust me, you won't be the only one, and places like the Belmont are considerably more expensive.

Also, the Belmont is definitely a hot spot for senior undergrads/frat guys getitng their first taste of living off campus (I was an undergrad at Duke and this was a popular place). I've heard complaints from non-undergrads that it gets too noisy on the weekends. I can't vouch for this personally though, because I've never lived there.

Just my take on it.

Wait... so what was the slogan on the shirt that yall ended up getting?

PS: I think both of those shirt ideas are hilarious... who thinks of these things

My friend and I looked at the Belmont and North Pointe and decided on North Pointe. It was cheaper, includes cable, AND includes an alarm system. In addition to the frat parties at the Belmont, their gates are apparently always open (or broken?) and I don't trust that, esp without a security system. Also, I think Alexan Farms is more near where I live now, and I don't think it necessarily NEEDS to be gated, because this is kind of a "safer" area of Durham.

I personally wish I was closer to Duke, only b/c I like to use the gym at night and hate driving back and forth more than once a day. But if I'm not going to use the on-campus gym, I rarely go back and forth to school. I guess that would probably be more of an issue if you need to study at the library or something. But you're not going to walk to school at night, so no matter where you live, you'll have to drive to campus. And since the apartment complexes all have gyms, the working out thing is probably less of an issue. And if you really hate where you live, or discover that you like where someone else lives better, you can always move for second year. As far as living north of Duke or south of Duke - Alexan Farms is closer to Chapel Hill, so if you want to go out there it's more convenient. It's also close to some restaurants, Super Target and WalMart. But if you want to go to the bars in Durham, Northe Pointe is closer - and it's closer to the restaurants on ninth street.

😆 I really like the "your mom" shirt, not that it's particularly unique to Duke.

But I can't believe some company would turn down an order of 100 shirts just because of a little innuendo. I've seen far worse frat shirts as an undergrad.

Oh, are there any apartment complexes you guys would recommend against?

Why did you rule out Deerfield, Doctor? Does anyone else have an opinion on Deerfield?

Deerfield is ok. The bedrooms are a little smaller than in other places, and the complex is a little older I think. My friend lives there now and she and her roommate got an apartment that had had a smoker in it previously and it smelled like smoke for months, despite febreeze and everything. I think the main complaint is that it's down this long road with nothing on it, and it's surrounded by Duke Forest, so at night you feel like you're way out in the middle of nowhere and it's kind of creepy. But in the day it's nice to be surrounded by the forest if you like running/walking on the trails. It's pretty close to Duke, although it's closer to the undergrad campus than the med campus (which are actually right next to each other). It's probably like a 3-10 minute drive to the parking garage, depending upon how many stop lights you hit.

There are a few complexes near campus, like Duke Manor, that aren't very nice and are in relatively bad areas of Durham (and some aren't gated, though I believe DM is). You'll know them when you see them.

Whats the complex that Jennifers boyfriend lived in where he was robbed? Thats probably a bad one.

On a different note, do any of your computers sometimes bring up the "find" thing when you type in an apostrophe? Mine does it randomly and its really annoying because I cant use the damn apostrophe!

No, you're just a weirdo. What I do hate, however, is when I stream with headphones on while typing and I guess I press 2 buttons at once and get this loud BEEP in my ears. It actually hurts.

I don't remember where he lived, but I remember thinking "bad idea" when she told me where he was living. I'll have to ask her.

oh the woes of finding a place to live... thanx for the love burnsie 😉

I have to agree with Dr. D about the shirts. If I were a t-shirt maker... I would pretty much make whatever. I mean... come on... it's a freakin shirt for cryin out loud.

man, i smell unplanned pregnancy in the near future... better make use of your Hey Durham knowledge... burnsalicious...😛
haha, I honestly laughed out loud when I read that. I can only say that I've given you many opportunities to be the father of my potential children but you've always rejected me and said I'm not your type. What's with that?

You have breasts. 🙄

You just think all Chinese people look alike...racist.

I take it by your spelling of fiancee that you're the man in the relationship? Shouldn't she be the barefoot and pregnant one? Besides, you don't make me desserts anymore. You're a horrible woman.

I'm not totally sure about that, but I have noticed that my ex has almost as much cleavage as I do. Odd.

Desserts? Who's making desserts?

And can we please just note that I have surpassed both Diosa and Burnsie in post-count?

*shudder*

if you're all coming to lecture tomorrow, i have some left over chocolate trifle soaked in a teensy bit of kahlua that you can try. i need to stop eating it, tis making me quite the rotund.

I will add that I believe your ex-bf shaves his legs more frequently than I do...not sure who that's a rip on, him or me.

yea, i've noticed that too, he's as hairless as a molerat on chemo. 👎

i tried, i really did! but even if i closed my eyes, flipped you over, brown bagged you and plugged up my ears, you still SMELL like one of them... :barf:

don't worry though, if i end up with penile cancer and have to chop it off, you bearing my children will be my consolation prize

Aw. I love you guys. You're so good for indulging the bitter ex that rears her head every once in a while.

Well, since we don't have a choice on whether or not to attend, you'd better save me some to take the edge off of a full day of school on the Friday before a test (I have clinic in the afternoon).

Ew.

Haha. If she bore the child, it would have FAS for sure. And I stopped making desserts b/c you eat them all before I can enjoy them.

Ok, that's a lie, I'm just lazy. But I wanted to make you feel bad. However, if that's your criteria, perhaps kirexhana should bear the children.

1. don't want any more stretch marks
2. will be turning 21 in 7 months so the baby will soon have FAS
3. have no space for a baby right now
a. other organs are too big
b. missing a uterus
4. i <3 talking in bullet points.

Haha, a month ago she was making fun of us for having more posts than her. Now that SHE has more posts, she's "winning". Totally illogical, pagemma.

Oh, and now I have more posts than you again.
