Duke Part III - Can't get enough :)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Haha, that is good to hear that others are like me, J.D. and Pagemma - I'm planning on doing a lot of the "home-study" course myself at Duke. It took me forever during undergrad to get over the guilt of not going to class until I realized that if I spent the same amount of time just studying the online lecture notes and reviewing I'd be a lot farther ahead. I don't know - there's just something about lecture... after 17 years of going to class, my brain just automatically goes into shutdown mode. I didn't go to biochemistry all senior year and it turned out fine.

I couldn't have said it better myself! Lecture is worthless!👎

so, for those who are waitlisted, is this the week that we could potentially hear something?

Ryan, I have faith something will work out for you in the end - we never know what's planned for us, and sometimes the way things end up are far better than we had ever hoped.

Ahhh.... the easy letdown. Just kidding, I seriously appreciate it. Don't worry, I'll make the best of what happens! I think my attitude and effort is probably more determining of my future than my school.

I'll be thrilled if I get in, I'll live if I don't.

Hey - does anybody know if Duke offers any sort of music downloading service at a subsidized rate? My undergrad offered discount subscriptions to Napster which was a really cool service.

Unfortunately, no they don't. That would be cool, though.

There is, however, an ipod class based on the undergrad campus. If you take the class, you get a 30G ipod for like $99.

Why haven't I done it?

LAAAZY. Plus I want that fancy red 8G nano. Just waiting for our loan disbursements to come out. 😉

Actually, they did have this one thing, but it quit working. I saw it randomly in one of those info emails that the university sends out and signed up. I could download anything onto my computer for free. It lasted a few months, then it died. Oh well.

Hahaha -- Why is this forum more happening than the c/o 2011's? 😛

If you don't mind, I had a couple questions:

1) Is the White Coat Ceremony in the morning, afternoon, or evening of August 3rd?
2) When are the rising first years arriving in Durham? :hardy:

Thanks~

I can help you with #1 at least. The White Coat ceremony is in the evening...I believe it was around 7pm last time with a reception to follow. Oh, and most 1st years last year arrived sometime the week before campout/orientation.

P.S. You must change the font color of your sig! That sort of color is tantamount to blasphemy as a Dukie. 🙂

Campout !!?!!?

Man, am I missing out! Any news on those 3 slots that we decided might be open?

Ra Ra Ra Waitlist!

Haha, well you may not be missing out on anything since I think they canceled campout (thanks to drinking at the last two). Have you called Richard Wallace and asked him about any movement yet?

Well, I saw him at school yesterday at least.

Also, apparently there's no campout this year for sure but there is a day trip to Asheville. Sounds fun! Also, good luck, Ryan!

Well I definitely trust your eyes over an email that I've already deleted and can barely recall.

I can't wait to see the orientation agenda. :hardy:

Do a lot of med students participate in the campout for basketball tickets?

I would say a fair # did. I didn't, but it would have been fun. Campout was over a weekend, and we had an exam that Monday [I think it was Monday]. Anyway, some losers, like me, decided studying for an exam while staying awake for that long would be no bueno. In retrospect, I realize that block 1 is cake, and it wouldn't have mattered either way.

Thank you kindly, MrBurns 🙂

And my apologies about the poor color choice. I'll get on that right away!

hey y'all~
just wanted to say hi to everyone because i haven't been on SDN recently.
I haven't been on because I'm out of coutry (I am having a blast), but I guess the Duke thread kinda slowed down in last week or so.
I am very curious about those three spots as well.
How's everyone's summer? Going well, I hope? 🙂

I know we're over this now, but I had to post this Scrubs quote I heard last night because it's better than studying:

Dr. Cox: Morning Class. As residency director, it is my pleasure to have both surgical and medical personnel here with us today. In fact, in this room we have enough brain power to light up a city. Not a real city, mind you, but definitely a tiny ant city whose government has recently passed a series of stringent energy-conservation laws.

Is it tomorrow yet?

I like how your smiley is turned the other way. (= (Wanted to try.)

Summer's going well for me. Just relaxing at home in the Southern Californian sunshine, catching up with family and friends, reading books I've been meaning to read for a long time, etc. What country are in you right now?

Best wishes with Duke, yo. :luck:

Don't get me started. Not only that, but it was a $5 drink coupon and the drinks I usually get are like $3.50. Sheesh.

CONGRATS TO ALL YALL FOR FINISHING!!!

I am not back yet but I am on the internet for like the 3rd time. I have stories for yall... anyway... I'll talk to yall next week or something. Holla!

I am arriving in Durham on the 22nd and moving in with Burnsie on the 23rd I think for whoever asked when people are going to Durham. I have a question: is everyone planning on going on this day-long camping trip? And if so, what do they mean as far as we may or may not stay over night... what does that mean? How are we supposed to decide if we wanna go or even what to take if we don't know if we're stayin the night??? Anyone?

Hey FCD, welcome back. I assume that you are extrapolating the "staying overnight" part from this bullet point on the retreat invitation?

If you have any other scheduling concerns (We will leave early in the morning on Saturday and return late that night/early the next morning).

When I read this, I took it to mean that we will be riding back on a bus to Durham that night but it would be very late (11 pm to midnight) or possibly so late that it would stretch into the morning hours (1-2 am). I didn't take it to mean that we would be staying at a hotel, etc. Though I can see it from your point of view as well, so I'm not sure. I'm down for the rafting.

hey guys,

I am freaking out right now cos I just realised that the due date for completing the immunization was June 30th and my blood test results for Hep B and Varicella won't be here til the next 2 weeks. Is Duke really anal about these deadlines. Please let me know, I am really stressed right now.

No. I was out of the country and I realized the same thing like the day before I left. I think we basically just need to get it all in ASAP.

I just brought my immunization results to student health during orientation week. They'll keep harassing you until you get them in, but the deadline is not strict, so don't worry.

BTW, there will be no staying over night on the camping trip. The doctor is correct, the vans will be heading back later at night.

OK sweet... let's hope I can go since I missed the damn deadline 🙁

*is f'ing annoyed that they scheduled the pelvic exams BEFORE figuring out who would be going on the "campout" trip*

Sorry 2011, you'll have to wait for some other event to meet me.

🙁 That blows. Can we schedule like an SDN lunch that week or something for all those ppl that are gonna be in town. I know I'll be there starting the 23rd. How bout the rest of yall??? Yall wanna do lunch sometime that week?

Lunch no good. We'll be in OCY from 8 am - 4 pm like every day. ObNOOOOXious. But whatever, we get to poke each other with needles. Sweet.

Am sure there will be parties a-plenty starting to get lined up v. soon. Keep your e-mails open.

And everyone, great job smacking down those Yankees in the Yale thread. 👍 👍

Haha... ya we turned that into another Duke thread. Freakin Yale...

so I know I have been out of the scene for a while, but as I am packing up to move out of my apartment this morning, I get the call from duke. I got in off the waitlist!! but now I don't know what to do :scared:🙁...advice would be GREATLY appreciated...I have vested so much in my other school and have had it in my head that I am going there for so long now that it is really hard for me to now turn them down in the last couple weeks and go to duke...but it's duke!!! I must say I am more than thrilled to be making this decision, but advice would be nice.

Congrats, Husky! WHOOHOO! I remember how elated I felt when I received the phonecall as well. I also remember feeling slightly vested in my state school and how that complicated the matter a bit -- granted you're a bit later in the summer. But I think for me, it was because I had slowly conditioned myself to accept that I couldn't go to Duke and that other school was where my home would be -- after you accept it however, those feelings faded for me. It just took some time - hopefully you have a few days to decide. Also, if you're hesitant because of having to make these last minute preparations... it will be a lot of work in the short term but definitely worth being at the place you want to be for four years. Do you have any more details to share? What programs are you choosing between and what are you looking for in school/location/students? CONGRATS!

Ah, I see your other school is UAB then -- an excellent school as well. I was choosing between UNC and Duke (so this is a similar predicament). Hmmm, there is a significant difference in cost of attendance between the two schools (were you in-state at UAB)?

Thanks for replying! So I am not in-state for UAB but they did offer me scholarship money so cost-wise, UAB is the cheaper option, in addition I have family in Birmingham which is another level of support. But it's duke!! i am very very greatful to be posed with this choice, but basically I only have until the weekend to decide. :scared: ....I like both curriculum a lot, but feel maybe UAB would be slightly less intense...but I was head over heels in love with Duke at one point in time, especially the third-year...i am completely torn, so any advice/words are greatly appreciated.

GODDDDDDDDDDDDDDD.... HUSKY YOU HAVE TO COME TO DUKE!!!!!!! I mean... it's freakin Duke. This is what you've been waiting for! This is what we were all waiting for. I mean, I totally understand that this is like your entire world that you had been imagining all summer turning upside-down, but holy freakin moly dude... it's DUUUUUUUKE!!! Either way you go, I don't think there is a wrong choice here, but maybe it would help to read back thru some of our Duke threads and try and remember why you loved Duke so much. I can imagine u might be kinda jaded at this point and only be thinkin about UAB so just give it some thought thumbin thru the old threads or something... iono just tryin to help. I'm so freakin happy for you though!!! You = The Man!

CONGRATS
