I received an acceptance letter to ECU this past Monday (3/1). 🙂
My first acceptance - what a relief!

I interviewed on 1/23 and the acceptance letter was postmarked 2/26. Good luck to everyone still waiting to hear.

they really dont tell us the exact number of UNC ugrads that join the med school... but based on the people I know in my class, the number is up there (it's gotta be over 30 or so)...

btw, there's this myth that NC state people throw out there saying that UNC SOM accepts more NC State ugrads than UNC ugrads... that isnt true... dont get me wrong, there are quite a few NC state ugrads in our class, but not nearly as many as UNC ugrads.

hope this kinda helped.

The committee must have met last night. So we might hear something today, if anything...

I got accpeted at unc  I recieved a phone call last night at 6:30 ...ohh, MY GOD, THANK YOU, this is one of the many many gifts he gave me.

Good luck to everyone waiting to hear !!!

i want to get into unc so badly!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you and I hope you will get IN as well!

To answer your question, I am a female and a proud one😉

Congrats Zoop! What a phone call eh? Are u out-of-state or in-state?

Thank you all, I am very excited and can't wait till AUgust. 😀

I interveiwed on Feb 20th and YES I AM IN STATER !!

Good luck everyone !!

zoop I just PMed you.

I had my interview at unc early jan., yet no word for me. I called the admissions office and they said they hadn't made a decision on me yet. Yet I see that some who interviewed much later have already heard back. Is that just the way unc works or does that have to do something with how strong of an applicant you are?

Thanks

I think its the way UNC works, and I think its also dependent on the strength of the applicant. From my understanding, at each committee meeting they pick the cream of the crop from the most recent interviews. Then after the interview season is over (fairly soon) they look back over everyone and fill in the rest of the spaces. Oh, and I've been waiting since early October, so don't feel too bad....

Twinklz, I think that you are right. I interviewed in SEPTEMBER and haven't heard anything yet. I want UNC so badly that I can taste it.

Good luck to all🙂

UNC...

I want to agree with the above poster, but...I did a search for such information in the past on SDN, it seems like everyone that interviewed a long time ago got rejected this time last year. Does anyone have info to the contrary? I hope you do because I interviewed in early October. Any facts regarding this from UNC admissions office?

Thanks

I never said that there would be a LOT of spaces to fill in after interview season 🙁

Committee members present applicants based on their competitiveness with other candidates being presented. I was told that my application would not be presented until the last committee meeting. If your stats and interview score are below average it takes longer to be brought up to the committee. Also, the longer it takes to hear back the lower your chances are of getting in (not to blow out anyone's candle). The committee meets one more time (3/22). Good luck to all.

/* hey guys,
does anyone know how many apprx ppl get called/accepted at each meeting? also does everyone get the letter indicating that they are reviewing your file?
*/

Well considering that 160 ppl matriculate each year and from what I've heard, UNC offers acceptances to twice the class size, let's see if this makes sense.

Let's assume that UNC offers ~300 acceptances.

Also assume that UNC only offers first choice acceptances (not from waitlist) to 1/3 of them = 100 ppl.

Interview season starts in Oct till March = 5 months.

They meet twice a month = 10 meetings.

So, I would assume that they call 100/10 = 10 ppl each time.

However, from what I've heard, the "cream of the crop" that they accept right away is actually less than 1/3 of the total acceptances.

So, 7~9 ppl every two weeks to be more realistic.

Most schools (unc included) use an internal ranking for waitlisted ppl. Hence, if you're on the top 1/3 ~1/2 of the waitlist, you have a good chance of getting in.

There are ~140 spots for in-state students and ~20 spots for out-of-state students. (I believe last year it was 143 to 17) Think of out-of-state and in-state applicants independently. If you are out of state and on the waitlist there is usually quite a bit of movement. If you are in-state there is not as much movement. They offer ~100 interviews to out-of-state and ~400 interviews to in-state. If I recall correctly, last year, they had to offer acceptances to about 50 of the out-of-state students who interviewed to get close to the 20 "quota." Not much movement on the waitlist for in-state students. Which makes sense. Most in-state students would choose UNC over Duke, ECU, and Wake Forest because of the cost to success of residency placement ratio (This is a subjective calculation...don't flame me for this).

However,
so far no one has been rejected or waitlisted yet eh?

Anyone have any updates from ECU? Do you know when the admissions committee meets again? Best I can tell the last time was Feb. 26? Also, anyone have any idea when they start sending more acceptances?

thanks in advance

Hello all ECU hopefuls.

I graduated from ECU BSOM in May 2002. Currently in my orthopedics residency.

I didn't find out that I was accepted to ECU unitl May of 1998. I had already had plans to attend a medical school in New York, I am happy with my med school experience. If you like a smaller university setting, it will do great for you.

Feel free to email with any questions.

I'm an out-of-state applicant to UNC trying to figure out my chances to get in at this point in time. Does anyone have any advice or insights to give? Thanks!

According to AAMC UNC should have sent out it's 160 invitations by now. Can anyone confirm that? I talked to them this morning and they said:

1) They finished interviews yesterday.

2) They will notify everyone with a yes/no/waitlist# by April 1 and that is what they are working on this week.

3) There is no way of getting your status earlier.

4) They still attempt to call all the applicants that are invited.

I haven't heard yet from UNC and I assume that I am not in the "top 160", since I hadn't heard.

If anyone calls over there between now and 1st of April, please ask them if they have sent out 160 invites or if they are still working on filling the class.

I disagree. UNC according to usnews gives out ~250 acceptances to fill class of 160. From what I've heard from previous post the committee is meeting for the final time on march 22. Also, if they just finished interviewing that means they must have quite a few spots left. I think its too early to give up. Let's wait and see. BTW I haven't heard from unc either.

Last year I interviewed Friday, Dec. 13th (yeah, bad omen) at UNC and heard nothing till my reject letter in mid April. Yet this year I thought from my interview that I was gonna get the big Reject or waitlist again, yet got the call just a few weeks after my interview.. I don't know what they're smoking during the admissions meetings there.. I've not seen a lot of consistancy from UNC.

hey chemguy,
congrats on your acceptance....anything that you change/improve on your application that you feel contributed to your acceptance this time around? were you waitlisted last year?

Thanks for the congrats 🙂

Nah they just gave me the boot last year (makes sense.. it was my first interview and I choked hardcore).. they said I needed to sell myself better and get some more exposure to medicine, so I shadowed a group of anestesiologists and an Internist, watched a bunch of surgeries (c-sections are pretty interesting), as well as volunteered for an orthopedic surgeon and in a free medical clinic.. I just made sure to ask the deans at unc and ecu what was wrong w/ my application, and made sure to jump through those particular hoops very carefully this time around..

yalie_grad,

If you have no connections to NV, then there is a high probability that ECU is going to send you a rejection letter.

All of the students accepted to ECU are either from ECU (graduated from High school in NC) or attended an NC based university or college.

I got a phone call tonight about 7pm from the faculty member that I interviewed with at UNC, letting me know that I am being offered admission to UNC med school. Wow, quite a night! 🙂

Not necessarily. There are some older students in my class who did not go to HS or college in NC, but worked in the state for several years and established residency. But they do have a clear connection to NC.

No, I am a North Carolina resident, I went to NC State for undergrad, and I am up at Yale now for graduate school. I don't think ECU even interviews people out of state.

Well, if people on this post were correct and today is the last UNC committee meeting I take it UNC should be sending out their rejection and waitlist letters soon since they should have offered all their acceptance tonight.

Just wondering if there have been any other Rejections from ECU that people have heard about. So far Swiper The Fox is the only one that is brave enough to state a rejection.
