Yalie_Grad,

If you don't mind me askin, which program are you in up at Yale? My gf is getting her phd in the Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry (or some such species) up there right now.

G'luck w/ UNC

I am in the School of Public Health. If you have ever been to Yale it is by the medical school.

Anyway, good luck to everyone as we approach the final weeks of waiting!!

Anyone else going to the UNC revisit on 4/17?

do you have to be invited for this? what advantage does this serve?

IDK, I got an email about it. The jist:

"On Saturday, April 17th, starting at 8:30 a.m., we will assemble in the lobby of the Medical Biomolecular Research Building (MBRB) for registration and a continental breakfast; our program will begin promptly at 9:00 in Room 2204. Several panels have been planned that will present key elements of our medical school program. The panels will include faculty and students to talk about each year of medical school, service organizations, student activities, research and international opportunities."

i'll be there.

any current unc students recall when you got your financial aid package last year? i called the financial aid office and was told that they won't be downloading fafsa info until april and we wouldn't have our packages until june! well after the date when we have to have decided on a single school.

Oh my lord. This can't be the case! I am holding on to four other acceptances... I can't imagine that they would have us wait that long to decide if we're going there.

Are you absolutely sure? Because so much rides on where I'm going... whether or not I have to sell my car if I move to NYC, whether or not I should sublet for the next few months before moving away, or just staying in the Triangle area and getting a long-term apartment with my good friend at the end of May.

Arrrrgh! (Sound of me ripping my hair out.) Why even bother considering money?? I swear this is a conspiracy to cash in on all of our deposits, so that we can't withdraw them in time to get our money back.

I think that's because I received the lone rejection letter out of that office this year!

so is it safe to say that if we didnt get a phone call,,,we are being rejected/waitlisted? im prayin...

I had heard nothing post inverview from UNC until a second-look email appeared in my inbox at around 4pm today. I called the admissions office and they confirmed that I'm in! Don't give up hope yet!

By the way, I interviewed in SEPTEMBER!

Hey Vaccine, congrats on UNC. Just wonderin' if you're an out-of-stater. Also, is there anyone accepted this week from out-state?

Hi! I just found out today that I was accepted at UNC SOM!! I am so excited! I cannot wait to spend another 4 years at UNC. I will be going to the revisit on 4/17.

I am sure this is not news to any of us still waiting on UNC, but I thought I would write a post anyway. I just called Carolina and they said that the class is indeed full and they are now going through the rest of us to figure out the waitlist/rejections. She said that everyone should be getting their letter in the "next couple of weeks." Deep down I knew that they had already filled the class (I mean given out all of their acceptances), but it was nice to hear it officially! Good luck everyone...may the waitlist be long and may it move swiftly!

bmischen,

did they tell you whether you were on the waitlist or rejected? or do you have to wait for the letter? thanks in advance and good luck...

no, they are not that helpful....they didn't know anything other than they are deciding on the last of us and that we will get a letter later...I got the impression that they have the stack of applications and they are ordering them. when they are done they will end up with a (ranked?) waitlist and a rejection list and then all of the letters will be sent out.....

Has anyone heard from ECU recently, accepted, waitlisted, rejected?

Are they even still interviewing? This waiting is getting a little ridiculous!!

still waiting to hear also. looking back last year, it wasn't until around May 9th before people started hearing anything. It is also driving me crazy.

good luck,

I am waitlisted at UNC, and USUHS, and MCV. It seems that UNC is letting people know later this week (give them a call if you want, they are letting people know by mail). I just interviewed at ECU 4/1 so I think that it will be mid-May till I here from there. Man, I am waitlisted everywhere but no acceptances. I hope I will get in!!!!
Bruce

Well, I have withdrawen from USHUS, so I know they have waitlist spots available. As for MCV apparently their waitlist moves a lot of out-state applicants, but doesn't happen until after May 15th.

I guess I am waiting to hear from UNC hopefully this week, and ECU is really slow.

Good luck to everyone and hope everyone gets in somewhere soon.

ECU is still interviewing. During a faculty candidate presentation today I saw a group of applicants drift by on their pre-lunch tour. I don't believe BSOM interviews for waitlist spots so it may be safe to assume they have not handed out all the acceptances. Of course most go out in May anyway.

waiting for classmates.........

Yup, ECU is definetly still interviewing, and I'm pretty sure they're interviewing through the end of the week if not longer. I'll check the interview schedule later on tonight and see how much longer they'll be interviewing.

My guess (and this is just my guess) is that they're not going to send out any more letters until they interview everyone for the application cycle. Keep in mind that this is only my guess.

Best of luck!

I received my UNC waitlist letter in the mail yesterday, dated April 7. It's a standard reply form, needed by May 15. They also request official transcripts from all of your schools. The letter says that the AMCAS ones that we sent in don't count. It also says that there is no way they can tell you where you are on the list...
Now I'm in waitlist limbo at Duke, UNC, and Wake Forest..........great! Good luck to everyone else!

Today I spoke with the secretary at ECU and she said the last interview was today. She said I should have an answer by the end of April. I hope that holds true, since the sooner I know something the sooner my house goes on the market. I tried to pull an answer out of her by telling her my wife had just had our second child last week, and we needed some solid future plans. Didn't work.

Oh well.

good luck.

I spoke to BJ in admissions on Fri and she did say that interviews were over for this year. Everyone should hear something around the 2nd week of May. Calling the admissions office wont be very helpful bc they wont tell you anything except that you are still under review and that you should be hearing within the next couple of weeks. I remember when I called last year and the secretary gave me no indication of an acceptance other than a letter had been sent. The admission packet comes in a thick white envelope. Best of luck.

ECU Med 07

Is it too late to write a letter of interest to ecu at this point? think it can make a diffence in your app now?

I received my waitlist to UNC yesterday. It was dated April 13. I don't know how their waitlists works. If you received the waitlist last week are you higher up? Do they offer only the # of seats in the class, 160, initially? Or do they offer more automatically assuming there will be those that say no thanks? I am one of those with no acceptances as well, so I am praying that I am able to get in. Any advice at the next step to take would be appreciated. Letter of Interest? More updates? Contacting interviewers? I have no clue.

First, congrats on getting on the waitlist! this means that there is still a chance! I would love to say that since I got my waitlist letter a couple of weeks ago that means that I am higher...but I don't think that is the case....
I think they felt pressured to get some decisions out a few weeks ago, so they sent out decisions on the ones they had already gone through (waitlists and rejections only...all acceptances were already gone) and now they are done with ALL decisions. I can't add to whether they only took as many people to fill the class or what...hopefully that is the case (more spots for us!)
I bet when May 15th or a little later rolls around they will meet again and look at all of the waitlists as a whole and fill the spots that have opened up....

Congrats on the waitlist and don't give up hope.

My two cents that could help push yourself up the waitlist.

Do call Randee to see where you stand on the waitlist. She may not tell you your exact rank on the list(since many schools claim that its unranked. yeah rite!), but try to find out if you're on the top third of the waitlist. From what i've heard, ppl on the top third have quite a good chance of getting accepted.

Do write a letter of intent if you will indeed attend UNC if you are taken off the waitlist.

Do send in updates on your current activities or even extra letters of rec.

As a last resort, I've heard of ppl (at U of Rochester) that called up the Dean directly, introduced themselves and expressed how much they wanted to go to that med school. Do be polite though, if he/she gives you the cold shoulder.

Best of luck

I agree with dhoopi. I had a friend last year that was on the waitlist at UNC-CH. She sent in a letter of intent to the dean (Hoole) and said that she had gotten into another school, but UNC was her top choice and she would much rather go there.

She found out the day she was to leave for Chicago that she got in! Her car was all packed and she was ready to go to Chicago! It does and can happen, so don't give up!!!

eminemunc-

I highly recommend stopping by the office (instead of calling) to check on your waitlist position. It will add an important personal aspect to the numbers game.

Good luck, and I hope you hear good news soon... 🙂

"Update" on the UNC waitlist

Yesterday, I personally went up to the UNC MED office of admissions to try to get some information about the waitlist. I didn't gather much, but here goes.

1. Do I need to send my transcript even though I graduated in 2002? Didn't I send one with my secondary?
At first, Randee checked my file on the computer. She then proceeds to see if my "final" transcript had been sent in. She goes to a file folder which was mine and flips through. She finds my transcript but tells me this is not a final one but one sent before I graduated. This means they kept my file from my previous application. I guess she didn't look far enough in it to see the one I sent this time around. She then tells me that I don't have to send my transcript in now, that "I have time." I then pushed further and asked do I just send it in "when I hear something" and she said yes. This had me a bit worried because why would I not need to send my transcript in??? Does this mean I am far down the waitlist??? 🙁

2. When do people start to hear something?
"when people start pulling their names from UNC"
Obviously this is no help.

3. Should I still send updates?
"Yes, if you want and it will go into your file."
Yeah, but will anyone really look at it? I don't know if this was a negative comment or not.

She also said Dr. Hoole makes the decisions about who gets in.

She then takes my sheet and says "I hope it works out for you this time."
This left me wondering as well.

So I never really decifered anything without blatently asking my status. As people have said before they don't really want to tell you much.

I plan on writing a letter of intent/ CV update this weekend. I thought that I should address it to Dr. Hoole personally, maybe he will be more apt to be the one to receive it and actually read it.

Comments anyone? 😕

Eminemunc,
Did your waitlist letter ask you to send in another official transcript? From your post, it sounded like this was not included in your letter. I was just wondering. Good luck!

You should start seeing movements on the waitlist Post May 15th, which I believe is the day when applicants can no longer hold multiple acceptances. So... 3+ more wks of waiting I guess.

As to the letter of intent, definitely address it to Dr. Hoole. I think Randee is right in that he has the final say on pulling people off the waitlist.

yes, my letter did say i needed to send a transcript. i have no idea why. i sent one with the secondary. i dont understand why they would want another copy of the same thing, i graduated 2 years ago. so i asked if i needed to send another one. she said "you have time" like there was no point to do it at this time. it made me kinda worried but i am probably overreacting.

Well, from what I know early July is the deadline for ppl to send in their official transcripts. So that may be what she means by that, and not that there's no point in sending it in.

Do what you can do now, then just relax and hope for the best.

Best of luck.

Hi,

I was wondering if someone could tell me the approx. % of students that go to UNC med and also did their ugrad in NC.
ie. how many UNC, NC state, ECU grads, etc... in each class

Thanks

UNC
Waitlisted at UNC. The date on the letter was 4/21. I must be the last person on the waitlist 40/40 since it took this long. I talked to Lisa on Friday and she said all letters were mailed out earlier this week. Good luck to those waiting.

ECU
From my understanding rejection letters are rolling out of Greenville. I'm still patiently waiting. So if you haven't been rejected from Brody that is good news. Last year they narrowed it down to 100 or so odd people before making final decisions early May. They waitlisted ~60 applicants last year.

Guamguy...I have questions, thanks in advance.

For UNC, you said 40/40. Is the total number of people on the UNC WL 40? Also, I wouldn't worry about the date of your letter. We all know they rank their waitlist, but it seems too predictable to me if they send out the letters in the order of the waitlist. Just my $.02 but I don't think we can deduce where we stand on the waitlist. My letter was dated April 13 (I think), but I don't think that helps us much. Also, a lot of people are talking about writing letters, etc... to Dr. Hoole. I think it's already decided at this point. They rank the waitlist and that's that. I don't know for certain but that's what I've heard.

ECU--you said you talked to BJ on Friday, but you listed that under your UNC comments. I am assuming that you did mean BJ (and not a UNC staff person) of ECU, and if so, that's awesome that we're gonna finally hear something!!!!!!!!!!! Does anyone get accepted there this late in the game? I hope so as I interviewed in early September... I think all of us that interviewed at least 3 months ago and longer will get waitlist or yes. Good luck to everyone!!

Thanks for your help Guamguy if you reply to this...

I just thought I would put in my 2 cents about ECU waiting this long to let people know if they have been accepted! I can't believe this is taking so long and I imagine this hurts their class as well!

I am working in Belize for the summer so I needed to have my housing situation etc figured out by May 12th when I leave...needless to say that I did like ECU but I had to sign my lease which means I am definitely going to UNC!

I don't know but I just think this wait is kindda strange - everyone I know is already into a school and making plans as well and we all think this is going to hurt ECU when they finally decide on who to accept but they are all going elsewhere!

To answer your questions FtD:
-UNC has 40 people on the alternate list. The ranking is not posted and supposedly there is some internal ranking. My guess is the reason they don't rank it is so they can change things if needs be.
-I meant to say I talked to Lisa at UNC on Friday.
-I'd say write a letter... you have nothing to lose at this point

In regards to the post by AmFrank, there are still spots at ECU. They did offer 72 spots by the magical date March 15th, however, it is important to remember that many people who are accepted to ECU and UNC will go to UNC. Therefore, quite a bit of spots have opened up since then and will continue to open up in the next few weeks. Just ask SweetTea or I believe phmed07. Last year they both were accepted fairly late in the game.
Last year around this time they had 20 some odd spots open... that is at least what Dr. Peden stated at my interview last year. (I interviewed around April 10 last year at ECU).

Good luck to all.

GuamGuy....
40 people on the UNC alternate seems like a VERY small amount (since other schools have upwards of 400 people on their alternate lists)...
BUT I would be happy if that is all they had...better chances!
I suppose most are NC residents and maybe they only have 40 because not many in state people turn them down?
Just curious...how did you find out this #? do you have any other info like how many usually come off of this 40 person "alternate list?"
Thanks in advance for the info.....actually thank you for the info you have already provided
good luck!

Hey everyone

I just got my waitlist letter at UNC today (not sure what the date is since it came at my parents', but i suppose either apr 23 or 24). I was also worried that I may be the last one on the list. I can't believe that they're only waitlisting 40 applicants. If the US news numbers are accurate - i.e each year UNC accepts ~209 applicants to fill class of 160 students, and at this point if they only accepted enough to fill their class (160 students), i would think they would waitlist at least 50 or so people. I am not sure which of the numbers to believe, but it wouldn't make sense. Also, has anyone received a UNC rejection at this point or will they start sending those out now to those who are not accepted or waitlisted at this point?

one final question. I had the 1st year UNC med school biochem prof as my research advisor. I just finished research under him. He has already written a rec letter for me and an additional letter indicating that I completed my project and got approved for graduating w/ honors. You guys think if he writes another letter (to accept me off waitlist or something) specifically addressing Dr. Hoole, who knows him well, it will be any good?

Thanks and good luck all waiting...

chintu

In regards to chintu's concern about the length of the waitlist, it is my understanding that UNC offers more acceptances than spots around March 15th (~180).

anyone called ECU recently? any ECU updates? thanks in advance...
