Edward Via - Auburn (VCOM-Auburn) Discussion Thread 2015 - 2016

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm interested in maybe doing sports medicine so I agree, any love from this school would be cool

What do you think my chances are guys? I have already received a secondary, but still worried about my MCAT score. I am retaking next week and im not sure how I feel about this new MCAT...

3.86cGPA
3.83sGPA
MCAT: 23 (9 PS,6 VB,8 BIO)

I was verified yesterday and received the secondary today. I didn't expect it to be so quick! I have finals next week so I should study but I really want to start working on it. Decisions, decisions!

According to VCOM a competitive score starts around a 24 but with such a strong GPA I think you will be good. Especially since you're applying early. Good luck next week! Know everything about amino acids lol

A little extra to my application: I have a lot of DO shadowing hours plus 500+ hours of research. My recommendation letters are very strong. One of them is from my mentor who was in charge of Harvard's radiology residence admission and still teaches at Harvard medical school. I'm also from Oklahoma if that makes a big difference. Any insight into my chances would be greatly appreciated.

What are the current opinions of the Auburn campus? I'm from South Carolina and am inclined to go to the Spartanburg campus because of proximity to home, BUT going to a school with an actual university and all the things that come with it (read Football) is very appealing.

When are secondaries going out for either of the three campuses? I have yet to hear anything from them and it is making me nervous.

I did like half of my undergrad at AU.

Football is really big. The southern university atmosphere is really played up too; everyone is nice (with a few major exceptions). Fraternities really aren't that big of a deal. Parking is usually a nightmare, but VCOM has a huge parking lot so you'll probably be fine. Football is huge. Football is bigger than the town. Football makes Auburn undergo CHF in a good way. I could probably write more but i'm tired.

Also, if anyone has the secondary and could post the prompts I would be grateful.

Describe the top three reasons you have chosen osteopathic medicine as your professional choice in becoming a physician (Please use your own description and not one that widely describes the profession).

What three professional qualities do you feel a Student Doctor must be able to demonstrate as he/or she makes the transition into the study and practice of medicine. How will you demonstrate those qualities as a medical student at VCOM?

Please describe a volunteer or service activity that played a large part in your decision to become a physician.

If you have not completed all the prerequisite coursework, please state how you intend on completing it prior to matriculation.

Awww, crap. I just realized I pre-completed this secondary a while ago and I may not even get a secondary after all!

From my understanding they only send one out for all three schools.

What are the current opinions of the Auburn campus?
I'm a student in the inaugural class at VCOM-Auburn, so I'm happy to shed some light here:
VCOM is located just south of the 'traditional campus' and is less than a 1/4mi from Jordan-Hare stadium. Have a look at Google Maps if you're inclined to get a better idea of where everything is located. The building is AWESOME. If you get the chance to come and visit, please do! The building is open M-F 8-5 for any visitors, and there's guest parking right in front of the building.
Speaking about the campus involvement, we're all pretty excited about it. You are entered into the student lottery (equivalent to a freshman) for the chance to buy football tickets. You can get full season or a partial (2 game) package, depending on your luck. In the future, we should be registered as grad students and will have a better chance at all being able to get tickets if we like. For this year, VCOM actually provided tickets for 2 home games for each student!
Also, we are able to play in the campus intramural leagues and can use the Auburn Student Rec Center (which is the bomb!) for free. IIRC, its one of the nicest in the nation and really has to be seen to be believed. 240,000sqft of pure awesomeness!
The entire city seems pretty excited to have us here. In fact, I've been stopped twice since school began because I was wearing my VCOM swag around town.

Parking is usually a nightmare, but VCOM has a huge parking lot so you'll probably be fine.
If I'm not mistaken, we have approximately 400 spots in our lot for students. Should be plenty for both 1st and 2nd year students (~160 per class). Also, they're still working out the details, but we should be keeping all of our spots on game day. Personally, I think I might be 'selling' my parking spot... $$$ Haha!
Also, I think we'll be able to tailgate on the property too on gameday... but that, like many things, are still in the works.

Again, if you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to shoot me a PM or to comment on here. I'll try to check back every now, as my studies allow, to get you all the information you need.
Good luck, everyone!!!

Thanks for the detailed response. The football atmosphere is exciting, but the rec center is what I really wanted to here.

Obviously, I wouldn't base a decision about med school on a rec center, but all else being equal it might tilt the scale.

Did you take any courses in the US or just submitted your WES evaluation?
Oh man, I've been here for 14 years. All my education is here. They emailed me back two days ago and told me they are still deciding whether or not to extend a supplemental app.

Ok, thanks. I was wondering since your stats include international student. I did not know if you apply using foreign course work or not.

I visited the Auburn campus a couple of weeks ago and I spoke to one of the assistant deans and he mentioned that they're still in the process of compiling apps and extending secondaries. So don't fret yet if you have not received one!

VCOM cares more about GPA than MCAT. If the rest of your application is solid, your stats won't keep you out.

It's one secondary for all 3 campuses correct? I got the secondary yesterday after being verified just two days ago

Holy crap! I was verified like a month and a half ago and still nothing. Rejection seems likely at this point...

Chill out man. It's only been a month, this process goes on way longer than a month, so if you're going to be overly negative after a month you need to relax. It took me about a month to get their secondary.
Agreed. I still haven't received a secondary, that's what worries me, especially because I already took the time to pre-write it!

After some difficulties getting my secondary to submit (word limits, ugh) I'm all submitted and excited about this school! I do not have a DO letter as of yet (3 MD letters and my DO I work with is writing me a letter); do you think I will still be considered for interview in the meantime?

Is anybody else having difficulty logging into the website to access the interviews? My email doesnt work when I put in in the login

I haven't been able to log in either! And when I try to do forgot password it doesn't recognize my email address either.

Did you go back to the secondary email? The login is your aacomas id and the email has your temporary password.

It says on my portal that I've been selected for interview, but no email yet. Either way I AM SO EXCITED!!!!!

Can anyone comment on how long it took for you to go "complete" after submitting your secondary? I submitted all my letter with AACOMAS and received the "Secondary Received" email from VCOM on 8/18. Does this seem like an abnormally long time to wait before being deemed "complete", since they had all my support docs from the start?

We are in the same exact boat, I got the secondary received email from VCOM on 8/18 as well, on the portal it shows all the LOR's and scores being recieved, but I have yet to recieve a complete email or any for of communication from them! I hope this isnt a silent rejection, because I really want an II from this school!

when did you get this portal? I had a VCOM SIS portal that was used to enter the secondary....my secondary log in and password don't work here.

The login information was at the bottom of my invitation to complete a secondary application email! 🙂 It's different than the login info for the secondary.

thanks! got the call for II today.

Did the Auburn campus call or the general Virginia one? Also were u complete around the same time of Torilynn92? I was complete at the end of Aug and I'm getting nervous lol

I'm in your same boat. Got the " we're going to review your app for completeness " emaiL after submitting secondary about 2 weeks ago and nothing since

Haha you didn't! I selected 10/14 only because I have school and work conflicts on all dates before that. You?
Aw, bummer, I'm 10/6! I debated doing 10/14 but that week is insane at work and I don't want to leave my office high and dry while I go gallivanting off to Alabama. I'd need to take several days off, as I'm driving up from South Florida.
