She's a psych major, the poor kid. She's a supervisor at a plasma center currently...
I chatted with a couple of friends who have been here 20+ years, one of whom is studying psych/SW. Your concern should be that there are a lot of couples who move here for the military, and the average military spouse is looking for work right now. But with a bachelors, there are fair odds of finding a first crappy-ish job that helps build a resume.

We have PETA and Operation Smile headquarters, and plenty of healthcare, colleges and business services. As I've mentioned here recently, you'll want to assess your ability to deal with traffic in balancing housing and employment areas. The highways get ridiculous because of bridges & tunnels, and they don't go in straight lines from point to point. Public transit is possible but nothing like you'd find in DC/NY/Boston.

Best of luck to you.

A comprehesive answer to a vague question. You're my favorite, DrMidlife.

anyone know what the average sci-gpa, cum-gpa, and MCAT for accepted students are? I know the minimums they have on their website but I'm sure for such a selective program the averages of the students they accept must be much higher.
Thanks!

Hi,
While I was filling out the application, I noticed that the non-native English speakers have to take a TOEFL examination. However, I have not yet done that till date. My question is that if it is absolutely necessary to take the exam before applying or can I take it later?
Thanks!

Sorry, no idea. I know a few data points but they're all over the map.

This would be a good thing to ask Leah.

It's my understanding that non-native/TOEFL are only relevant if you've never studied in the US before.

Ok. So I'm taking the MCAT on April 29th. Is this date too late for EVMS? Does it help if I'm a URM?

EVMS closes its apps April 1, so yes, too late.

But you should be looking at URM programs, not programs that cost $50k. See the "GPA enhancement" sticky at the top of the forum for a list of these.

Best of luck to you.

From the FAQS:

If I plan to take the MCAT in April and the application deadline is April 1, will I still be considered for the program in the Fall Semester?

When your MCAT scores are received, the application will be evaluated and you will compete for slots from our waitlist.

So I'm guessing they do but you will be competing from the waitlist?

just got the first bit of good news so far after 38 med school rejections and a uni of cinci smp waitlist! I still have to hear from Gtwn but im ecstatic at having chance to do something about getting into medschool.

my stats:

mcat:35T
cgpa: 2.88
bcmp: 2.55

take those numbers with a bit of salt tho as my first two years of undergrad (and thus intro sciences) were terrible because of my moms passing away

Congrats! How long did it take for you to hear back?

Also, did they let you know by mail or email?

i sent out my app mid january and i got the all complete on Feb 1. so two weeks from that i got an acceptance email.

I just had a quick question about LOR submissions. I've submitted three references to the online application, but it seems none of them have received e-mails from EVMS. Do I have to complete the application before they get the notices? If I want them to send the LOR before I complete my online app, do I just ask them to mail it directly to the "School of Health Professions"? Thank you for your time.

Assuming you'll want to use your LORs for med school apps later, do something that's one-size-fits-all instead of EVMS-specific. Faculty *hate* having to do administrative stuff like finding/printing/sending letters every time you need one.

Get an Interfolio account, and have your recommenders submit to a letter service like Interfolio. Or do Virtual Evals. Doesn't matter.

Then you have the letter service send the letters to EVMS for the med masters.

In June, you have the letter service forward your letters to AMCAS for med school apps.

And then you don't have to bother your recommenders more than once. Ever. Trust me. Do it.

Best of luck to you.

Just got accepted!

It took 4 days between completion of application and acceptance.

Also applied to UCinci and Gtown, but this is amazing news!

Welp, just got waitlisted...

Anyone know how many people (if any) get off the waitlist?

I am a current med master who actually interviewed for the med school today. I was on the wait list last year for maybe a week or 2. I was not the only person wait-listed in my class. Expressing great interest in attending will always help your cause, but don't be a pest.

Also, if Leah gives you a call and asks if you are still interested (after having been wait-listed), that is good news and most of the time a package should be arriving with info a day or so later (meaning you were accepted).

buena suerte

Good deal. I need to e-mail Leah next week so I'll mention that the med masters program is my first choice. Thanks.

I think most of the people in the current class were on the wait list at one point(I was for 2 weeks). As for movement I would assume it is possible for people to be accepted until the first day of class. If you call leah I think she will be able to tell you where on the wait list you are located.

I got accepted in mid january. You definitely have a better chance if show you're interested. I was wait listed for awhile and then I talked to Donald Meyers, the program director, on the phone saying how interested I was. The following week I got an email saying I was accepted.

Just wanted to say hi to everyone as I am an old timer that is matching in 2 weeks!! Crazy enough I remember the day I drove down to norfolk to look for a place to live....

EVMS is a great place... I was there for about 2 months in 2007.... I applied early decision to GW and didn't have to finish...

I honestly think EVMS is a better program than Gtown bc I believe at the time I was applying the acceptance rate of gtown into medical school was roughly 50%? and EVMS was well over 70-80%....

Granted most students at EVMS ended up going to EVMS, I think that was a reflection of the people in the past that went to EVMS... which were typically people close to the area that knew about the program or people that really didn't have much chance to get in anywhere else....

Now that EVMS grown in popularity and has increased its standards... people can definitely get into other schools other than EVMS... which I think are peoples biggest reservations with the program....

Also people in my class and classes in the passed have gone to other medical schools... its a great place and at the end of the day if you end up at EVMS for medical school.... its better than going to georgetown... and then ending up.... NOWHERE....

Hello everyone. Newbie here, with a newbie question.

If one were to apply and have an interview in early January for EVMS, when should you hear something back? On average? This is not for the masters program.

Thank you,

anyone hear anything new? waitlist movement?

Longtime lurker, first time poster... but knew that I appreciated seeing this kind of info while I was lurking.

Accepted to the Med Masters on 16 March after app was complete ~10 days. Will be attending, unless I get off the waitlist for the med school.

MCAT: 30R (12v/9/9)
cgpa: 3.38
bcpm: 3.24
Ivy-league undergrad
EC: Some shadowing, 4 years military experience post-college

Some advice - A couple weeks after I sent everything in, it still showed that my application was incomplete despite a fedex confirmation # that my transcript had arrived. A phone call cleared everything up very quickly. Also, make sure to discuss in DETAIL your clinical volunteering/shadowing - Ms. Leah (who is an incredibly nice woman) called me and asked me to add some more detail to mine before my package went before the adcomm, and it probably made a big difference. Best of luck to all of you!

I'm planning on applying to this program for fall 2012, but don't know if I should wait until after my fall semester of senior year. I've done the calculations for after this spring semester and my cgpa should be ~3.25 and my sgpa should be a ~3.0. I'm planning on taking the MCAT this June. I've been looking through the thread and have seen that having any C's is a bad thing so I don't know if I should apply or not. I have 2 C's, one of which is in a class my college still allows me to retake because it was within the last year, but the other one is going to stay on my transcript. I'm currently at a top 20 school, but don't know if that matters or not and I'm a resident of Tennessee. Would anyone suggest this program for me or any other programs? I will also have a year of research completed before I apply, and I do volunteer work with many different organizations. I worked with one of the local hospitals near my house last summer and plan on doing that again this summer while taking the second semester of calc after finishing the MCAT. Thanks for any advice.

Does anyone know if I can call Leah Solomon to find out my position on the waitlist? Do they usually have that kind of information?

I got waitlisted around March 21st and immediately called her that same day. She told me that she wouldn't be able to tell me where I stood on the waitlist till the end of April after they've reviewed all the applications. Apparently, they wait till all the applications are in to create the waitlist.

Do well on the MCAT. Get A's fall semester. Submit application and transcripts after your fall semester grades, but start your application as soon as possible. In the application, make sure you talk about your experiences IN DETAIL. It will make a difference.

Goodluck!

Can anyone speak to how much the waitlist moves? Would being in the middle third of the waitlist be a terrible position?

Just opened a letter from the program today that I was wait listed. I have to admit that I was expecting it to be a rejection since any letters I received from medical schools in the mail have been rejections. It was a pleasant surprise, however, it did seem a bit silly. Why didn't they just sent me an email?

Waitlisted also! How does EVMS compare to BU/ Tufts or something like Upenn's SSP?

All these waitlists are starting to make me nervous. Haven't heard anything back yet but anticipating a rejection/WL also 🙁

I spoke with Leah today and she was able to tell me which third of the waitlist I was on. You could try giving her a call tomorrow or Monday. EVMS might be closed tomorrow because of Good Friday, I know Georgetown is.

Thanks for letting me know! I tried to call her, but she wasn't in. Guess I'll just try on Monday.

nevermind, found the answer on page 34

I was just wondering does anyone know if EVMS medical masters program requires students to purchase a laptop through the school.

Called Leah, she said there are about 75 people on the waitlist right now. I'm on bottom one third because of not enough clinical experience 🙁

I'm pretty sure the school does not require you to buy a laptop through them

Thanks for the info on the length of the wait list. Some people in previous posts on this thread speculated that the wait list was 500 people because 500 applied and no one posted that they were rejected.

waitlisted as well - apparently i'm in the middle of the top 1/3 of the waitlist, so i guess if there r 75 students on the list that's good news? She said that they usually have alot of turnover (average of 20 changes) over the months of May and June so cross your fingers!!:xf:

by the way, does anyone know how this program compares to RFUMS BMS or Drexel? I was under the impression that this program has a really good linkage with EVMS like RFUMS but i'm not sure. Opinions welcome (and sorry if i'm re-asking questions!)

Giving us a rough idea of where we are on the wait list, telling us how many applicants are on the wait list, and giving us an approximation of the turnover from previous years?!?!?! Wow, EVMS, simply wow! I wish all medical schools and SMP programs were as forthcoming with this type of information. Most of us are bundles of stress right now and I do truly value that EVMS has been so open about the wait list process, rather than keeping us in the dark which seems to be the norm.

Hey, do you mind listing your stats? I'm just curious what was needed to be in the top third

ya def! so my stats are not all that high but I spent ALOT of time writing my personal statement and have an upward trend in my gpa (finished school getting 3.6/3.7 in my last year)

cGPA: 2.95
sGPA: 2.8
MCAT: 30Q
EC: 3 different research jobs (1 full time, 1 part time, 1 internship), shadowing with 2 different hospitals, a few ECs that had nothing to do with medicine (counselor/volunteer for sexual assault organization as an undergrad, created/managed/choreographed for dance team...etc), and a few other part-time jobs throughout high school and college

Hope this helps!

Thanks a lot! I was just trying to figure out why I was placed so low on the waitlist. Leah told me it was due to my MCAT (26), but she said everything else about my application was great. So I didn't quite understand how one aspect could bring me down so far. She said I have very nice grades (3.37 right now, will be above a 3.4 when i graduate, sGPA 3.1), excellent LORs, and a lot of clinical experience. *sigh* I'm going to have a lot of begging to do lol.

I was waitlisted about 4 weeks ago. 31Q, 3.46sci/3.54overall 😕

I don't have a ton of clinical experience, just your standard volunteering. I'm assuming that's whats hurting me. I was more research oriented throughout undergrad. Leah said I was in the middle of the waitlist.

No problem...ya begging will be the name of the game. I think if you call them and show alot of genuine interest Leah will keep you in mind when they start calling people off the waitlist. Also, she told me that they probably wouldnt see any waitlist movement before the end of May since the "national choose your med school day" is May 15th - I guess that's the deadline ppl who have been accepted have to formally accept and withdraw their applications from other schools (including off waitlists...etc), but I'm not 100% sure.

Did you apply to any other programs?

Yeah, I've read a about 15 pages of this thread and the waitlist definitely seems to shift a lot between early june-late july. & I didn't apply to any other programs, mainly because I found out about the EVMS so late notice (late Dec.) And I really just want to stay in the Virginia Beach area for awhile. If I could go to EVMS for med school I'd be one happy camper haha.

But stalking this thread had paid off. Apparently one person was able to get off the bottom third of the waitlist 2 years ago. As of now, I've sent Dr. Meyer a card explaining how much I want to go to EVMS, and I plan on sending some more as time goes on. I've heard e-mailing Leah helps too, so I'll definitely do that. I'm just staying hopeful!
