I was wondering how people that attend schools like NYU (77k/year) pay off their debt. Are these students getting parental or some other outside assistance. I just seems like a tall order to pay off and if you want to specialize that's even more money. My wife and I will attend a state school and we will have 2 DDS degrees that some people will be paying for 1 degree. I just don't get it.

How to pay or not pay from your own pocket:
Parental support (Lucky dudes)or
working their butts off (Normal way), or
by winning a lottory (unraealastic way), or
get a rich spouse (easy way), or
Commit suicide (escape rout!)

This is a good question... althought I'm hoping to get into school with low tuition costs (which I think is less than 150K), how much does it come out to when you go to a school like NYU where students supposedly come out w/ 300K total? How much does that come out to per month on a 30 year loan, and how much total are you going to be paying with interest and everything?

My HP 10IIB says:

300K 6% 30 years: $1798.65/month
300K 6% 15 years: $2531.57/month

haha...most of the students here just block out the amount of loans we have. I would say that a mjority (close to ~50%) of the students here are from CA. And knowing how competitive CA schools are, lots of them missed out on state tuition. Same w/ me. Got waitlisted at my state schools so it was b/w Nova and NYU and Nova "relatively speaking" isn't too far behind in tuition, so tuition wasn't a deciding factor in coming here.

To the OP, I'm still working on that. Gotta start studying at NYU Medical school library. Hopefully marry some ophthalmologist so we can get eye/oral exams for free...

300K 6% 5 years: $5,799.84/month (good luck!)

10 Years is probably more realistic:

50K 6% 10 years: $555.10/month
100K 6% 10 years: $1110.20/month
200K 6% 10 years: $2220.40/month
300K 6% 10 years: $3330.60/month

I thought NYU students ended up owing about 250k and Nova 180K. I always thought that this large gap might end up being the deciding factor for me to go to Fl, both schools are great though. Are my numbers wrong?

Yea your figures are about right. I just remember sitting down w/ the parents and talkin about the tuition difference b/w the two schools. We pretty much came to the conclusion that for ~$50,000 just go to the school that would make you happier. You're gonna be takin out a huge amt of loans in both situations anyways so make the best of it...lol

I've been accepted to my state school, but I have an interview at NYU in Feb. If I decide to take the military scholarship, they will pay for my tuition and living expenses no matter where I go; however, the military only gives you 1,100/month stipend to cover living expenses. This may not be enough to live in NY. So money is still coming out of my pocket. I assume there is a much higher proportion of students at NYU who are going the military route to pay for tuition. Brocnizer, am I correct in this assumption?

In my class, I do not know of anyone that is doing a military scholarship. But then again I only associate with about 40 students.
