Fall 2010 Acceptances!

Hi qkchen,

I am waiting to hear about UC Denver too. People do not talk about the school much, and I imagine its cause it is so new?

I was wondering what was going in to you decision to go there? It is one of my top choices and I just am interested in yours and others thoughts.

Thanks!

the UC Denver school is relatively new and does not seem to be on most people's PH school radars when it comes to applications, or so it seems.

CSPH is my in-state school so it would make the most sense financially for me to attend; it's also a collaboration of two other schools (University of Northern Colorado and Colorado State University) so that means you can take classes at any of the three campuses. basically, i feel CSPH is an excellent school locally and would allow for a very well-rounded education.

moreschool, did you apply for the jan 15 deadline or early notification?

Heard my first bit of bad news today. 🙁

I got wait listed at BU for Epi. I am not too distraught though since I've had a very fortunate decision year. I am going to tell them take me off of their wait list since they are not my first choice at present.

Accepted:
Harvard (Epi 80hr MS)
UW (Epi MPH, MCH track)
U Pitt
UIC
Emory
U Michigan
Minnesota

Wait listed: BU

Waiting: Yale, Berkeley

I'd keep my eye on CSPH, they'll be an up and coming SPH, I think. The university is really putting some effort to beef up the PH efforts around there, especially with the new Anschutz medical campus/facilities all being right there and being the premiere health facility in the rocky mountain region.

I've been admitted at BU and Dartmouth for a few weeks now, but waiting anxiously for UW and JH. Both being top programs and Seattle being where my boyfriend lives. I felt reasonably more confident on UW (because of my background and the program I was applying for - SBS) and WAY less confident on JH because I am at the shorter end of their work requirement. Guess what?

11:30 pm I get an e-mail that I am rejected from UW. Spend an hour on the phone with my bf (not a very happy mood!!). Just by sheer obsession because I've been doing it every hour, I log into JH online at around midnight - I'M ACCEPTED!!!

What a rollercoaster! I think I would have chosen UW (not just for personal reasons, but the fit of the program, the cost, etc etc) but I did NOT expect this at all! Of course there are stronger applicant than me I'm sure, but I wonder if my rejection has to do with being out of state?

Sometimes it's the luck of draw. You don't always know what the committees are looking for in an applicant. But it is always nice to have a rejection paired with an acceptance (especially when they're good schools C🙂.

my impression is that they're definitely trying put themselves on the map. i mean, they have the resources and connections to do it. however, the school is not yet CEPH-accredited although the MPH program is CEPH-accredited so that could be part of the reason they're somewhat overshadowed by the PH schools. csph goes up for CEPH review in fall 2010 so that should be an interesting time.

Hi qkchen-

I applied for the jan 15 - did you apply for early notification?

waiting uggggggggggggggh !!

Congrats on getting in!

What are your stats? I got accepted to UW out of state. However, I worked with staff at UW on another study at the university I worked at. :/

@INTPThinker - 3.4 cGPA, 3.7 last 2 years' GPA, BA Psych, 1.5 years of research (neuro/ophthalmology), 700Q/620V/4.5AW, nearly 2 years work pharma market research project management role, volunteering/organizatinal type work in two different health outreach programs.

Which program at UW did you get into? What are your stats?

if you did early notification, you should have definitely been notified by now already. if you did regular deadline, you have until april to hear back from what i was told.

thank you and gl to you 👍

hmmm, and i just called too. thats odd. i really hope that its not 12 weeks....I did see some Columbia acceptances. None for the Urbanism track (i dont think) Was wondering if any1 from that specific track heard of anything.

I applied to the urbanism track as well. Have you heard anything, because I haven’t? Is it a popular track?Columbia is my first choice and I am getting nervous 🙁

This waiting game is getting absurd. Well, really I'm just frustrated. Going to have to start making decisions in mid-April (6 weeks-ish) and I still havent heard back from the majority of schools...

Accepted:
Tufts - MPH (Global Health Track, part of dual degree)

Rejected:
UNC - Nutrition PhD

Waitlisted:
Emory - Global Epidemiology

Still Waiting:
GWU - MPH Microbiology and Emerging Infectious Diseases
Tufts - MS Nutrition (part of dual degree)
UC Berkeley - Health Behavior and Society (re-routed from nutrition)
NYU Steinhardt - MPH Nutrition

So really, I'm into half of a program right now. Grr. 😡 Maybe I'm also frustrated because I'm waiting for acceptances to visit schools and get some clarity on decision making...

Sorry. Had to vent.

I feel your pain. And YES this is starting to get absurd. Thank you.

My apps were complete and sent off back in October....but I'm still waiting on Berkeley and Harvard. What...is taking....sooo....long....?!?!?

I want to plan visit days so I have a sufficient amount of time to make an informed decision on which school gets an insane amount of my money for tuition. Is that too much to ask? Why do schools take months and months to decide, and give us just a few weeks (or maybe less)?

Ok done venting. 🙂

I realized that since the open house for one of my schools is April 9, and they want a decision by April 15th, I basically have to hand them a check by the time I leave, otherwise it'll never get there on time via postal - I live on the opposite coast! Well, unless I use express or priority mail, but even then I'd have to do it as soon as I got off the plane at home so what's the point?

Mine so far:
Accepted
Emory (Biostats MSPH)
Univ. of Pittsburgh (Biostats MS)
Univ. of Massachusetts-Amherst (Biostats MS)

Waiting
UNC-Chapel Hill (Biostats MS)
Brown University (Biostats MS)
Univ. of Rhode Island (Statistics MS)

Stats
BS in Biology with advanced Mathematics coursework
Overall GPA 3.6/Math GPA 3.95
GRE 620V/700Q/4.0A
No PH work experience but volunteer exp. in Occupational Safety and many non-profits
20+ years working in non-related fields (I'm 41, career changer)

Congratulations to everyone that's heard back already!

I was a lurker for a little bit but just wanted to let everyone know that I received an e-mail acceptance to Columbia on Tuesday. I submitted my application on January 5 (the deadline) and was not listed as "complete" on the apply yourself page until January 19. In fact, I had to call to have my status updated.

Anyway, I hope that information might help anyone that's still waiting. But to be honest, I still have no idea in what order they send decisions back. It seems like there are people who applied early but are still waiting to hear.

Also, if anyone who has received an acceptance to Columbia already is still waiting for a paper packet in the mail - they don't send them anymore. I called and was told that everything is paperless now. A little anti-climactic since I was excited to get a fat envelope...but it's better for the environment, right? I also asked about financial aid and the woman said that the Columbia aid application would be posted on the website very soon.

Anyone else in here apply to sociomedical sciences?? if so, which track?

Yes, I applied to the SMS in the urbanism and the built environment track, but I still haven't heard back 🙁 What track did you apply to? Congrats

Can't you pay online for most schools? The idea of sending a paper check never crossed my mind!

Received a rejection from Harvard SHDH program this morning. Still waiting on Berkeley MCH & UCLA CHS.

Thus far, accepted into MCH programs at GWU and UIC.

Ditto, me too from Harvard.

Has ANYONE heard from SDSU yet? Anyone brave enough to call?🙂

Hang in there guys! We have all of our answers soon 🙂

i am getting so frustrated waiting for berkeley and columbia. i applied for the urbanism track at columbia and it seems like nobody else has heard back as far as i can tell. berkeley is pretty ridiculous, especially given their extremely early deadline.

soooooo ready for this to be over!

yeah, I am waiting to hear from the same track at Columbia and I am going crazy with this wait. I tried to call on Friday but couldnt get anyone. Slowly losing patience. Let's hope that this week holds good news for all of us 🙂

No response yet. The last time they updated my status was 11/5! I know a girl who applied there last year and is re-applying this year. She said they got back to her in mid-April last year.

Thanks knitPHgurl; I got some info that they don't start looking at apps until about Feb 20th, so the April timeline makes sense. I wasn't super worried.....just....anxious🙂 It is my #2 choice, and I would love to hear from them. They updated my status Dec 17th, so I feel ya! Are you MPH or PhD?

I applied to the History and Ethics of Public Health track... maybe it's just that the Urbanism and the Built Environment division is taking a bit longer than the others to post their decisions. Hope you hear soon.

MPH in Epi...you?

What's your #1 choice? Do you know much about SDSU's PH school? Nobody seems to talk about them...

Don't worry about it too much. There seems to be no method to the admissions committee's decisions. All I can say is that the SMS department seems to be a little slower than the rest. Good luck!

PhD in Epi. My number one is Yale. Yale, if you're listening....I still love ya baby😉 #2 was a tie for SDSU and Harvard.

I actually don't know that much about their PH school; the PhD is jointly offered with UCSD, and I do know a bit more about what is going on at UCSD Medical School. For the PhD, in general it looks like you do your first year of coursework at at SDSU, then the rest at UCSD/both and you can pick someone to work with from either school. I love SDSU because they have another slightly obscure Master's program that works in with the kind of research I want to do. I love UCSD for about 40 different reasons that I won't state🙂 Sorry to be all covert about it but my application, stats, and interests are a bit unique and I'm super paranoid that an adcom's will read this🙂 Not getting in this year is not the end of the world, because I didn't actually plan to apply until this year anyway (it was a last minute decision) but it would have been nice. I will let you know if I hear from SDSU.

Man.. I finished my apps at the beginning of January and havent heard back from ANY schools. I didn't apply to top schools, as I don't have the experience/GRE scores for them. For those that got into BU or rejected/waitlisted, what were ur stats? I only have 3.6 GPA/1100 GRE/1 year of psych research... so i figure i'm pretty mediocre. Thats my #1 choice so im freakkkin out!

Did they put this in everyones acceptance letter?....
"The School of Public Health and Health Services Committee on Admissions has determined that you are among our top applicants because you so clearly demonstrated the ability, achievement, character, and motivation that we feel best fits our program."

It was in my letter...

Wanted to add my info to the group of us going crazy while waiting to hear from programs... luckily I got some good news today! In at GW for Maternal and Child Health. Anyone know if scholarship information came out with the acceptance letter or should we still be waiting on it?

Accepted:
Tulane
GW

Rejected:
Hopkins
Harvard

Waiting:
Columbia
NYU
BU

Hoping for more good news from the last three schools, although I'm really excited about GW.

I've been lurking, but I'm going to go ahead and post my info and stats since I've found it helpful:

Accepted:
UNC (HBHE MPH)

Waiting (applied really late to all 3 schools):
Drexel
UChicago
Boston U

GPA: 3.8
GRE: 1380 (680 verbal, 700 quant, 5.5 writing)
3 years work experience

Quick question for others who have been accepted to UNC (HBHE or otherwise) - have you received a financial aid decision yet? How soon after your acceptance were you notified? Any others waiting still?

No financial aid info for me yet. I do know that they have given out merit scholarships so if you got one, you probably would have heard by now.

keeping my fingers crossed for all of us!

congrats to all who have been accepted! and to those waiting...hang in there!

ok so it's been a while so i figure i'd update with everything:

accepted (all epidemiology unless noted otherwise) - Dartmouth (interdisciplinary), UC Davis (interdisciplinary), UCLA, UC Berkeley (Epi/Biostats), Columbia, Yale, Emory, GWU, BU

rejected: UW

still waiting: SDSU (but don't care any more).

Just went to Cal's admit day and that reopened my mind again. Top three are Columbia, Emory and Cal...outcomes still depend on my visits. any one have any insight?

congrats to everyone receiving acceptances to their choice programs!

so far, here is my cycle. all programs were either MHA, MPH-HPM or MS (in health systems management)

accepted:
Gtown
VCU
BU
NYU
Rush

rejected:
UW
UNC

waiting:
GW

right now, I am leaning toward Gtown or GW, but any advice or insight would be helpful (esp regarding NYU since this the only program that did not require an interview/visit)

good luck to those still waiting!
