August Bier
Virginia Apgar
Ralph Waters
Pepper Jenkins
to name a few.
Miller, Stoelting, and David Brown will probably all be fondly remembered in history for their contributions to the education of future anesthesiologists.

You bump into Cullen at Harborview yet? Thats one cool dude and his name is right under Barash's in their Clinical Anesthesia book. Dr. Novak is also one slick cat as well.

I haven't been to the Harborview ORs as a resident yet, head there in September. I went to med school at UW. Cullen was actually assigned to be my advisor in medical school when I was applying to residencies. I didn't really know who he was when I was medical school.
Ha,
Just saying I spent two months at UW as a CA-3 for trauma. Cullen is a good guy. Very dry. Helps edit a book with Barash. But, what other than editing a book have either accomplished, or given to the field of medicine to say that they are famous????
Apgar, whether she was a good clinician or not, remains perhaps the most famous of all anesthesiologists. Go into a single labor room in this country where you won't hear her name mentioned....that would be..how many times per day???

fakin' the funk said:This is a boneheaded question, but I was curious...who are the "famous" anesthesiologists? The "big names" in the field, clinical or research-wise? Or would I be best off browsing the authors in Miller? Thx...

Edmund Eger... For the young guys, Peter Pronovost at Hopkins is showing up all over the place (journals, capitol hill, Time magazine).
anyone from the ny area that is famous?
Sure, but...the guy ain't exactly known for his clinical prowess. He's not even a practicing anesthesiologist anymore. He's the "Chief Wellness Officer" at CCF.

Steven Shafer (formerly of Stanford, now at Columbia) is famous, I guess, in that he's the current editor-in-chief of our #2 journal. Also, Rob Sladen is a bit of a name in critical care.
Lee Fleisher is the Steve Nash of Anesthesia.
Of course there is the former pro wrestler, turned anethesiologist, John Bonica.
Allen Sloan played violin with the Dixie Dregs and Steve Morse and also with the Miami philharmonic

Pepper Jenkins - he was at Parkland when JFK was brought in - he did a great write-up that was re-published in one of the journals not that many years ago.
And almost forgot - Dripps, Eckenhoff, and Vandam.
Noyac, Jet, Zippy. Shout outs to the insane clown posse Krackers of gas passers
