Has anyone had a problem with FAMU receiving your applications/transcripts? They say to only call on Friday to find out such information, but when I call on Friday they never can tell me. Last Friday they said that someone will call me this monday to let me know, but I still haven't heard anything. Has anyone had this problem. should I just go ahead and send my transcripts again?

Thanks 🙂

I know, because we have no way of knowing if they received it or not. I sure hope they did.

Sounds like a common problem. I too had the same answer,"Call on Friday." How frustrating is that. Lets all cross our fingers. This is not the first time I have heard this. So many people have told me this same story within the past year or so.
In fact, since I heard about this problem I call FAMU months ago and asked if I could sent my sealed transcripts with my application. They told me that they preferred it, even though the website doesnt say. So I sent mine with my application. Then two weeks ago I got a letter in the mail that my application was recieved but not my application. I then went right away and sent them to the school and still no answer. Just," Call back on Friday." I feel like pulling my hair out. How frustrating.I feel like pulling my hair out.

The problems you are having are actually very common, what with people trying to get there transcripts and other such material in, what is even worse is that its actually isn't much better for transfer or pre-pharmacy students from FAMU. I'm a pre-pharmacy student at FAMU and as the deadline of Feb 1 comes the College of Pharmacy has said nothing to us about interviews, when the process starts or anything. One of the advisors, who shall remain nameless, actually told some transfer students to not even bother sending anything. I really hope things change, and the school is top notch, but they have major problems with organization and getting all your acceptance stuff straight. I wish you the best and don't lose hope.

So it's Friday and I just called to see and I got transferred to a voicemail that says "mailbox full." So I can't even talk to a real person or leave a message. This is so frustrating. GATOR girl where did you apply? It seems like we picked all the same schools!

There's 3 different phone #s on their website to call. Good thing I'm wasting all my cell phone minutes calling all these #s. 😱

Keep trying!!!!! :luck:

It happened to me too. There is something fishy going on in that school. Last year, my friend who has 3.9 GPA and 99 PCAT score and who did several impressing volunteer jobs turned down saying that they didn’t receive her transcript on time. She actually sent every thing on time, but I guess they couldn’t be able to come up with a reason to turn her down. Lackey for her, she got accepted in UF which is her first choice to begin with.

They are sooo not answering their phone today. 🙄

I called twice already and got the 'Mailbox Full' message the first time.
The second time, I called the main School of Pharmacy office. The minute the word 'application' came out of my mouth, the secretary transferred me to the 'Mailbox Full' number. I don't know why they're not answering, but it's rather unprofessional.

I called 3 times so far. This is not right at all. Yeah they're definately not my first choice of schools but I'd at least like to hear something.

Don't expect to hear anything anytime soon. I didn't get my ackn. letter until April and didn't get my interview until mid JUNE. FAMU is different from most traditional pharmacy schools because they have a 6 year program. They have to go through this process with their pre-pharmacy students first and then consider the transfers. The number of transfers accepted varies from year to year but it’s never very many. It all depends on how their 6 year students perform. I would say the average is from 15-30 and they get over 1000 transfer applicants, so is very difficult to get accepted as a transfer. The requirement for 6 year students to advance into the professional program is a 2.5 GPA.

Ok. Thanks. My Gpa is 3.0 with 76 on pcat. 25-30 students/year out of 1000 is not looking good. thanks 4 thew info anyway. 🙂

FAMU is not a big stats school. They don't look at PCAT at all and having a stellar GPA is not necessary. What you need to have is something to help you stand out. Writing a GREAT personal statement will help and having some extracurriculars.

Starting this year the state of Florida has a rotation grading system that is based on competancies acheived during each rotation. Preceptors no longer can give a letter grade. All four schools in Florida will be graded identically with this form. It will be interesting to see if they make those public.

Not trying to make this a cultural topic, but the problems you all are encountering are unfortunately typical of HBCUs. As I graduate of one myself I feel for your struggle especially so early in the process. My application was actually lost when I applied to pharmacy school. As you get into the system you start to get used to it and figure out how to "tweek" the system and minimize some of the "bumps in the road". In the meantime, keep pressing them and document everything from the time you called, who you spoke with, and keep copies of everything. In the future, make sure you send everything return receipt and via some type of expedited form of delivery (i.e. UPS, FedEX, etc) so you have some type of tracking number to be sure when the packet was received and who signed for it in addition to any forms of electronic submission. In all honesty every type of university has there issues (some good and some bad), but the paper chase can be really frustrating when you are just trying to get your foot in the door.

How is that going to work. Is the state goin go assure that every preceptor has the same standards? is there a standardize test?

There is a form that every preceptor uses. It asks questions where you rate the student on a scale, just like a normal evaluation form. There are several different questions that they rate you on. These go into a computer and the computer generates your grade. As long as the preceptors rate all students fairly, this should alert any Florida school to deficiencies in their program.

I have been living in Florida for over ten years. Throughout this time I have heard numerous people speak on how bad FAMU is. Just like the comment about the, "worst school in Florida." I don’t feel that FAM is a bad school what so ever. There are a lot of educated hard working people that come out FAM. The Pharmacy School been open since the early 1950's and still producing board certified pharmacist. Moreover, look at all the funding that the College of Pharmacy has received. We are not talking about a couple of thousands of dollars. We are talking about 11 million plus. Also, look at the types of research that is being done. It ranges from HIV/AIDS, Diabetes, Cancer, and substance abuse. To me that’s pretty impressive. Since most of you already have a B.S., you should see where I am coming from. Research in the health care/academic field is vital. To me this shows that FAMU is not just about numbers and tuition money. The school has invested a lot of time in Masters Programs, Ph.D, and Pharm.D programs all related to the pharmaceutical arena. Plus look at the numerous satellite campuses they have for the P4's. FAMU has a campus throughout the whole state, Jacksonville, Tallahassee, Tampa, and Miami.
Granted when looking at Florida schools each school is compared to Florida or University of Miami but FAM isn’t as bad as everyone says. Granted the application process is a little untraditional (pharmcas) but look what they are producing. It’s like what my boss says. He'll take a 4.0 student who cares from an unknown school before he'll take a 3.0 student from a top 5 university who doesn’t seem to care as much. It really is what you make out during the time in school. After all, University of Florida and FAMU still have to meet the same accreditation standards.

I think a lot of the bad feelings come from FAMU being an HBCU. People always seem to not look at HBCUs very highly. Another thing was because of the scandals that went on last year. The new interim president at FAMU is getting all of that fixed though. FAMU does have a lot of problems but the pharmacy education there is up to par with any other schools. It is not ranked as high because rankings are based on research money and Jeb Bush (Florida's governor) does not hide the fact that he is not a FAMU fan. I think because FAMU has a 6 year program a lot of the students get into the pharmacy school without being qualified but they usually get weeded out.

I think they might get more respect if they looked at PCAT scores. People assume that it is a school to apply to if you do poorly on the PCAT.

I talked with some of their 4th year students. Their program seemed to be more geared towards patient care, where UF's program is very clinically oriented.
