Florida DPT 2021-2022 cycle

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congratulations!!! I’m not sure where I’m going yet. As of now I’ll be attending FIU, but there are a handful of schools that I haven’t heard from yet that I’d probably choose over FIU
Congrats to you too! what made you choose FIU?

My top choices are the Florida public schools (besides FAMU) because of tuition costs, and so far FIU is my only acceptance to those. So I’m still waiting on UF, UNF, and USF. I interviewed with FGCU and I should be hearing back soon, and I interview with UCF on Wednesday. So I won’t officially choose FIU until I hear back from all of them. But I really enjoyed my interview with FIU. It was virtual but the campus and facilities looked great, and mostly I loved the vibe with my interviewer. She made me feel comfortable and confident about the relationship the students have with the faculty, which is important to me

What made you choose Nova?

I'm from fort lauderdale and it's a really nice city and campus. I had a virtual info session with them and really loved the faculty. Its a good program and I'm excited to join them. I also applied to UF

Dope!! Well good luck with UF or Nova if you end up there 🙂

I was just accepted into UCF's DPT program today. I want to wish best of luck to everyone this cycle. You've worked hard, believe in yourself!
Damn bro why is UCF out here lying lmao. I interviewed with them today and they said they won’t notify anyone until all of the interviews are finished. They said we can expect to hear mid January. But they obviously accepted at least one person a few days after round 1. Congrats though!! If they accept me I’ll likely attend

Yeah only the ones that were very impressive would hear back sooner. Is UCF your top choice?

Congrats!! That was super quick! I interviewed yesterday and they told us they wouldn’t have any decisions until January

Has anyone heard back from USF? They said they would be sending out some decisions before 12/18 and I didn’t hear anything.

I also interviewed Wednesday at UCF and have heard nothing. Jealous, but congrats!!

I keep checking my email and I haven't heard anything from USF so I guess we have to wait until their Christmas break is over. I also haven't seen anyone say they've gotten their decision from USF. I haven't heard from UCF after my interview either

Hello, hope everyone had a good holiday season. I also wanted to update that I got into UF 2 days ago. I hope everyone receives the email or phone call they want ! 🙂
Do you mind sharing your stats and when the deposit is due??

Me as well! Is it your top choice?
It is not my top choice, still waiting on some decisions. But I really liked the interview process and enjoyed all of the professors so I could def see myself there! Is it your top choice??

Hey guys. Has anyone heard back from FAMU about a decision? I applied in October and only received an email notification that my supplemental app was received

I was accepted to FAMU in late September, but I submitted my applications in August

my overall gpa is a 3.95 my prereq gpa for UF is a 4.0 and my GRE was 152v,148Q, and 4 AW.

they gave me until jan 20th to accept my spot and I don't think there is a deposit. Did UCF call you ? and how long did they give you to accept ?

Nice stats thanks! I am hoping to hear from UF soon. Yes, UCF did call me with the offer, they gave me until Jan 21 to accept

Just checked this forum since i last posted in November, sorry to anyone i didn't respond to. Congrats on your acceptances and i hope you get into your first choice.
I'll share a few reasons why UCF was my number one choice going into this application cycle: UCF teaches pediatric and geriatric separately opposed to the lifespan approach, Excellent cadaver lab with exclusive 24/7 access, small cohort size facilitating personal relationship with cohort and faculty, amazing clinical opportunities within orlando (Very likely that you will not have to travel outside of Orlando to complete clinicals. I understand in many programs you have to travel within the respective state to complete clinical semesters) as well as unique learning opportunities with the IMOVE lab, Neuromuscular Plasticity Lab & Musculoskeletal Research Lab.

UCF is my top choice too. I was told yesterday I’m on the “first tier” waitlist. A little disappointing but I’m hopeful that some students will decline their offers! On the bright side I was offered a seat at FGCU today, but I didn’t really like my interview with FGCU unfortunately

congrats on the FGCU acceptance !! I'm on the second tier for UCF. But you should be fine because during my interview one of the staff members said that they offer around double the seats that they have available and they go through the second tier of students on the waitlist. Also one of the current students said he was accepted off of the second tier, so don't stress yourself out too much.

Oh damn that’s super encouraging, thanks for telling me that! I wish they told us how many people were in the tiers. But good luck to you too!

as thegresucks said (great name), one of the current students i spoke to was accepted off of the 2nd tier wait list. good luck!

I was also placed in the 2nd tier of the waitlist but I wouldn't worry as several people would give up their seats, choosing a different program that might be a better fit for them. During my interview day, they also said that they would sometimes go through the second tier of the waitlist. You just have to wait a little longer. Also I believe they said it was around 25 students for each tier.

Hi everyone! I wanted to know if anyone knows more about the UF program or is a current student. I have a hard time deciding between schools and since they do not hold any interviews, I wanted to see if it is a good fit for me. Please let me know what are some reasons you decided to attend/apply to UF. Thanks!

I applied and haven’t heard yet, but I’m also concerned about attending without having interviewed if I do get accepted. I do believe there’s a virtual open house this Friday, but it could be filled up by now if they have a limit. Idk yet if I can attend because of work, but that’s probably the best way to see if it’s a good fit. I interviewed with a school that was once my top choice and really did not enjoy the faculty, so now I’m super hesitant to attend somewhere without having met the faculty first lol. I was accepted to USF this week and I’m also currently trying to figure out how the hell I’m supposed to know if I should choose them without having interviewed to get a feel for them

I applied to UF really cause I just applied everywhere in Florida and obviously UF is the biggest name. Here are some things that I’ve heard about it though:

I shadowed a relatively recent UF grad, and she had favorable things to say about UF. She mentioned that they had a bit of an inpatient emphasis, and specifically neuro, which isn’t exactly a plus for me personally. In retrospect I wish I would have asked her more about the program, and if I do get accepted I’ll probably try to contact her and pick her brain about it. If I do I’d be happy to post about it here

The only other thing I’ve heard is that because there’s a large emphasis on research, some of the faculty seem to care more about their research and the reputation of the name of the program than they do about their students and teaching classes. Also that because of this, some of the faculty are a tad unapproachable. BUT I heard this super weakly through the grapevine. A current student at another program at one of my interviews said something like “I have a friend who goes to UF and said this…” so take that however you will

What schools are you deciding between if you don’t mind my asking?
Thanks so much for the info! It definitely helps a lot. So I am currently deciding between UM and UF. I am from Miami so even though UM is a private school with higher tuition, I can live with my parents and would not have to worry about rent expenses. I loved the UM interview process and heard good things about the program from PTs that have graduated from there. I also work at an outpatient clinic where one of the PTs is a professor for the program so I know what to expect from the program. I don't know much about UF's program but I know it has a good reputation as a school and does emphasize on research. I am planning to go to the open house in March to learn more since I cannot attend this upcoming open house that is in a few days. I do have a friend that goes to UF but is in their pharmacy program and he tells me he doesn't like the program since it is not student centric for the same reasons such as faculty care more about research... so that is why I am a bit hesitant. Have you heard back from any schools? What are your top choices so far?

Yeah the non-student-centric trend about UF is a tad alarming. I know I already told you in the other thread where I’m considering but I’ll repeat myself for anyone else in this thread who’s deciding between Florida schools

My top is UCF, so I hope I get pulled off the waitlist and then I’ll probably go there. My 2nd is probably UF but I haven’t heard from them yet. If I don’t get in to either of those then it would be between between USF, FGCU, and FIU since I’ve been accepted to them. I’d probably choose USF cause I didn’t like FGCU, and FIU is more expensive, and I live in Tampa and went to USF for most of undergrad

I liked my interview with UCF and it felt like a good fit for me. I like that they have a small cohort, and I like that they have multiple faculty that do orthopedic manual therapy research, and they have an advanced manual therapy elective. I’m really interested in manual therapy and it doesn’t seem like other programs are very involved with it, but I should look into that more

At the beginning of this process UF was my top. Now that I have been through the interview process and learned more, I have seen how important interviewing is. It makes me question how UF can be so confident by having no interviews and judging people off their stats. UF has a great reputation, however not needing to see the personality and behavior of their future students really makes me hesitant toward the programs that don’t interview.

For example, I know someone who got into UF, but is on one of the later tiers for UCF. This makes me think that obviously this individual has great stats bc they got into UF and made it to UCFs interview. However something about actually meeting the individual made them go on a late tier of the UCF waitlist.

Idk how I should be judging schools at this point. But I am just going to go where I see myself fitting in. In order to do this I will probably try and actually visit schools that did not have interviews.

Hope this helps, just my opinion. But just like you I find it hard to get to know schools without going through an interview process

Facts! UF and USF not conducting interviews is a minor red flag honestly. I’m doing UF’s virtual open house tomorrow to get a better sense for how I’d fit in

Hi there.., I wanted to know if anyone has applied to Nova in Tampa or has any insight on their program. I have an interview with them next month.

I shadowed a DPT who was employing a current NSU Tampa student (I guess as a tech? I’m not sure what her official position was), and he was planning to hire her as a DPT partner in his clinic once she graduated from NSU

I can’t offer a ton of insight but the student said she really enjoyed NSU. She chose it because of the hybrid deal because she wanted to work during school to 1. offset tuition and 2. apply what she was learning in school in real time in the clinic in which I was shadowing

I’m sure you’re aware of the setup but if I remember correctly I believe she said everything was online except for like 4 days a month. So she had a full time job at this clinic and did most of her learning and studying online and on her own. Good luck at your interview!!!

Thanks so much for the info! What are your thoughts about wearing a suit for the interview? Is it to much?

I would definitely wear a suit if you have one! I wore a suit to all of my interviews, and most everyone else in my interviews did also. Especially for in-person

Great to know. I just found out I didn’t get into USF so praying the interview goes well. Impressed how many offers you have. My GRE wasn’t great 299 but I honestly thought the rest of my stats were good.

I’m sorry about USF, good luck with your interview! And thank you, I applied to a ton of programs because I didn’t think my application would be very strong but I’ve had more luck than I expected. Everyone seems to downplay the GRE but I had a pretty strong GRE and not a very strong pGPA so idk what to think

When did everyone hear about USF? I still haven’t heard back from them 😅

I heard only a few days ago. 1/18. I believe they said they’re trying to get their first round of acceptances out by February, so you still have time!

Let me know how the open house went. Unfortunately, I won't be able to attend this one due to work.
Hey I did the UF open house. It was fine I suppose. Sorry this is going to be long af but I’ll tell you what stood out to me:

I really liked the director. He was an Australian dude with a good sense of humor

I learned that they have a manual therapy course which is a massive bonus for me personally

Due to a large class size (~75) labs are split into 2 so it’s 35-40 per lab. But lectures are usually with the entire cohort

Students aren’t involved in research at all. Which seems strange because UF gets so hyped about research. There are several other programs in the state at which students do a research project throughout their time in the program and have the opportunity to present at a conference near graduation. I assumed UF would be the king of that, but they said students don’t have time for any research projects of their own

They said there are no opportunities to work with UF athletes

I tuned out most of the middle part of the open house when they talked about clinicals. The thing overall took 3.5 hours and I just couldn’t listen the whole time

Then some current students talked to us. I may be overthinking this one but almost none of the students seemed like very happy people lmao. Also one of them was pretty openly bragging to us about how easy it has been for her to work 3 jobs and maintain good grades. Kind of annoying

They also said the parking is horrendous and if you don’t live close enough to class to walk from home then the only place to park is a 20 min walk from class. They mentioned parking at nearby stores but they said places have been cracking down on that recently

They also said one of their main classrooms is above a CVS. That seems kind of strange. Is it like in a plaza off campus? I find that interesting and not exactly appealing lol

The main thing that stuck out was the way they handled questions about student-faculty and student-student relationships. At all of my other interviews / open houses when someone asked about relationships, they would go out of their way to rave about how amazing and close everyone is. At this open house, the director mentioned that people sometimes “butt heads” and one of his jobs is to smooth things over when that happens. I suppose that happens everywhere, but it was a very different response than I’ve heard from any other program

Then the students mentioned an environment in which students help each other and want each other to succeed, but that it’s still a slightly competitive environment. The guy may have misunderstood the question though because he talked about them being competitive with sports, so maybe he didn’t mean academically. But still they didn’t rave about how close they were as a class like most other programs have in my experience. They said there’s mostly just small friend groups, but that this is mostly due to covid when the campus shut down for a while. I believe the director admitted that the current year 1’s seem closer than the current year 2’s because of how covid affected their classes respectively

The students did say that everyone is friendly and will help each other, but it’s concerning to me that they seemed to kind of openly hint that the relationships aren’t necessarily great

It also bugs me that they don’t interview so there’s no way for them to weed out people who don’t have a fitting personality. Maybe they really are content to just accept people with the highest GPA’s and call it a day

Overall I came away from the open house feeling pretty conflicted about UF. I hate to be so cynical but I’m starting to think people want to go there because of its prestigious name and (meaningless) national ranking. But tbh I’m no different, the name still draws me in and if I’m accepted I very well may attend

Also I should mention that I chatted with a current 3rd year on another platform and he/she/they actually did rave about the program, the professors, the relationships, and the opportunities. So that’s some encouragement to balance out my cynical view of the open house
