Foreign Veterinary Graduates

Hi, DVMjkish, thank you so much for so many inspiring and informative posts from you. I am a new registered member in this forum. it seems that this forum open a new world for me.
I am from China and doing postdoc in USA now. My undergraduate study majored in animal medicine. it is kind of equvalent to DVM. Then i changed my major to zoology. i got PhD in zoology in China. The only future for postdoc who are doing basic research on bio-medical science is to seek faculty position in university or institute. However, nowdays this is a way to no where for most of us, except for those who got PhD from ivy university and have big shot supervisor and got nature or science papers published. I am not this kind of beast. So I am trying to quit this hopeless field. From your website i noticed this information "As rule of step # 1, your vet school must be one on this list.....". I am confused with what you said. My understanding is that the university on this list are accredited by AVMA and graduates from these universities are qualified to practice vet in US directly. Now the probem is that the university where I got my DVM (actually it is not DVM, it is Bachelor of Agriculture science) is not on the list. Actually there are quite some good vet school not on this list. I want to know if I am qualified to take the ECFVG program.

Thank you. btw, you are great man. I am sure you are man.

Here is the list:
http://www.avma.org/education/ecfvg/world_colleges/colleges.asp

if your school is not on the list, I recommend you contact the ECFVG directly and ask them. They are the one who should give you the correct and final answer. this is the contact page: http://www.avma.org/education/ecfvg/contacts.asp

you can just e-mail them.

Good luck.

DVMjakish, thank you so much for your kind reply. I just sent a email to ECFVG, and the reply is as below:

Your E-mail has been received by the ECFVG office. E-mails are addressed
as follows:
1. Requests to send a verification letter of program status to a
state board or other entity will be completed within 5-7 working days.
Please note: Request must be made in writing (e-mail) 2 weeks prior to
any deadline. ECFVG cannot be held responsible for last minute request.
2. Requests to change address, phone number, or other contact
information will be completed within 10 working days. You will receive
confirmation that such changes have been made via US mail, but the ECFVG
cannot send E-mail confirmation.
3. Questions will be answered via E-mail within 10 working days.

Actually I am not toally understand the reply. maybe I have to wait.

I want to ask the fellows here who took or are taking ECFVG program if your vet school is on the list of AVMA Listed Veterinary Colleges of the World. Since I haven't started yet and was really inspired by all the posts here, I really worried about this issue. If I am not qualified to take this program, my dream to be a vet in US may terminate coz I am too old and too poor to go to vet school in US.

wish all your guys good luck.

That is not true, America vets generally make more than UK vets, however some might do. The tax in England is much higher than US. So even if you make good money, big chunk go on taxes.
I say do whatever is easy for you to do and chose where would you want to live and work. Money is not the most important thing.

Hello, I am taking BCSE in December 2010. Any study buddies? Anyone has taken it already and has some books they used to study? Strength in numbers!! 😀
I hope to hear from you soon. :xf:

Hi, DVMjakish, Thank you so much for your kind reply. I got reply from Mary Barbosa, it is like this,

In order for your veterinary college to become AVMA-listed we must have a statement from the Ministry of Education of China stating that the College is recognized by the national government as granting profession degrees in veterinary medicine, and that its graduates are eligible to practice veterinary medicine in China.

Actually I don't know where and whom I should ask in Department of Education China about these things. I sent a email to Department of Education China, but haven't got any response yet, maybe never. I know how this bureaucracy work.

DVMjakish, Do I have the pleasure to have your email address? My email address is [email protected]
I would like to have some private discussion with you. Thanks

I am in my final year in veterinary school and am planning on moving back to Canada to obtain a license

I have read most of this forum and found it very helpful and I think understand the licensing process fairly well now. However I have one question:

My question is if i begin the ECFVG process in Canada am I allowed to take the CPE at one of the American Veterinary colleges or will i have to take it in Canada. The reason I ask is because i have read that the waiting time after passing the NAVLE and an available spot for the CPE in a Canadian Uni is 24 to 30 months. Which is a ridiculously long time. However for American Universities it is 4-6 months which seems like a perfect amount of time.

Thx

Hi, my friend took his BCSE and NAVLE in Canada and he took his CPE in Las Vegas this summer.

Hi, same thing happened to me. They send me the same letter. My advice is to call your dean or school head and ask them were you could get the letter from. In my case what I did is I informed my dean, she then informed the university president, and the university president contacted the office of the education minister. It is a simple letter stating that my school is recognized in my country to offer veterinary medicine, and that graduates are allowed to practice. After couple of weeks I checked the AVMA list, and my school was added to the list.

Hello everybody! I'm new to this forum and just want to commend people who already accomplished their goals and went through the ECFVG who are still actively involved helping out fellow foreign graduates! Started my licensure process back in 2008 and so far so good. Passed the language exam the first try, and then I got distracted with work and stuff; currently working as a vet tech in a small animal practice - helps out a lot! Took the BCSE May of this year and passed! And now I'm eligible for the CPE and NAVLE but will take the NAVLE first based on advices I got from Vets who I've worked with who underwent the same process. Besides, for $5'000. exam fee I better be 100% sure I'm ready when I decide taking that exam! So right now I'm preparing for the NAVLE exam on April next year! Just wondering if anybody in this forum from South Florida that are taking this test around the same time interested in forming a study group. I'm gettin by with my review just fine but it is definitely helpful to have somebody quiz or share knowledge with me. Again, goodluck to everyone and BELIEVE!!!! nothing is impossible! Wish me luck guys!!!🙂🙂🙂

Try to email OAVT or SAVT. I'm from MB. There is no AHT Equivalency Assessment Services for Foreign Vet Grad in MB. They referred me to Northern Alberta Institute of technology which opened recently an AHT Equivalency Assessment. The process are almost similar to veterinary medicine. There website is www.nait.ca/ahtea.

Hello guys, I just got a mail from CVMA stating that I got my spot to take the CPE in Nov. 2011 Montreal. Has anyone heard or experienced how is the CPE like there? I would like to have an idea of what to expect...

For those who think that the exam (CPE) takes too long here in Canada, well takes longer than in the US but not as long as everyone think, I sent my registration Nov 2010 and got a spot for Nov 2011, now I know for sure and can focus on getting ready for it.

Please again if anyone knows or has an idea of how is the CPE in Montreal would be great a heads up.

Thanks

Hi:
My name is bouchaib. I would like some advice about BCSE and what books did use to prepare for the BCSE test. you can email me at [email protected]. Thank you very much.

Hi DVMjkish! Thank you for your page with such interesting info. I have a question. You wrote that you used Mosby's Comprehensive Review for Veterinary Technicians. Now I read different reviews about this book and a lot of people say that at the end of each chapter and the comprehensive test have many incorrect answers. So, I would like to ask you about it. Was it too bad or it did not make sense for you? Also was it enough to refresh your knowledge about anatomy, physiology and pathology?
