At the 2018 Neuroscience Education Institute Psychopharmacology Congress in Orlando all week. Nice to have a few days out of the office although this conference always proliferates my own synaptogenesis along with the resulting brain fog.

Current topic: allosteric modulation of extrasynaptic GABA-A receptors in monoaminergic antidepressant treatment non-response.

Good times.
 
Did almost 300% billable this week, which will continue tomorrow with some report writing. Have neglected assignment correcting duties so will have some catching up to do. Touring Clark university on Sunday, followed by some ice hockey Sunday night. Rest of family is out tonight, so I’m having a few Jack’s Abbey lagers and a buddy is coming over to watch “Hard to Be a God.”we just finished the book, and the movie consistently pops up on lists of “most disturbing things to watch.” Should be fun!
 
So, today starts the chain of 5 separate company holiday parties I will have to attend... Here's hoping I don't screw them up.

A few cocktails at a friend’s house tonight (a Negroni and a local specialty known as a “Hilltown Hooker”). Tomorrow I’ll be watching my alma mater and- for the first time ever- #1 ranked UMass ice hockey team take on Quinnipiac. Sunday I’ll be playing hockey myself in my old man’s league. Correcting papers and maybe reading a new book in between the on-ice fun. Hopefully augmented by news of the demise of “Individual 1”
 
Despite a lazy morning, pretty productive day. Wrote several letters of rec for postdoc and faculty positions. Re balanced my brokerage account to account for some higher interest projections in 2019. Took my mother to bingo and won several hundred dollars. Went over to my investment brewery, quarterly financials went WAY above and beyond expectations, so a good dividend payment is on the way. Then bottled an experimental batch of brew. Now to relax, maybe some scotch and a cigar.

Syllabi turned in for the semester!
Committee work done for the semester already!


Now it's time to plot my three backpacking trips for the year. I'm eyeballing one mountaineering trip to the Cascades as well as another backpacking in the pacific NW this June, and then a 5-6 day trip somewhere in the north east in late May. Maps are on the table already for the Cascades. I'll probably need to poor a nice whiskey while I ponder.
 
All caught up on clinical work after a long week of mandated reports. And I am not teaching this semester which is awesome. Spending the afternoon at the gym and then enjoying a few drinks tonight. My buddy told me about a new sour at a local taproom that has my name on it. May put some work into my private practice website.
 
Got more work than I can squeeze into a week, so Saturday and Sunday will be work days again. Hitting the gym while listening to audiobooks, going to dinner with friends one night, date the other, doing chores afterward. Some clerk talked me into a new rye last night, which is not great.

Going to have to hunt down some Hudson Rye. Should be able to find it up here in Western MA. How do you like it (e.g., straight, rocks, etc.?). Is it too nice to put in a Sazerac?

Looking forward to a laid back weekend. No big plans- first in a while. Grabbed a six pack of of one of my favorites (Shed Mountain Ale) and will hopefully have one or two while bingeing on some shows/movies (wife and I working our way through seasons of The Great British Bake-off). I’m in the middle of Red Dead Redemption 2, which I’m finding quite enjoyable (despite it at times seeming more like a horse riding simulator than an actual game). Pats-Chargers Sunday afternoon, and playing hockey Sunday night. It’s cold out, so indoor stuff sounds good to me this weekend.
 
Going to have to try the Hudson Rye. Have been trying more rye whiskey lately. As for this weekend, brunch with friends tomorrow and then get ready for the snow. I was gifted some Winter Jack from the wife recently and this seems like the weekend to give it a try.

It gets better (a little) in that you can eventually get a fast travel upgrade to go from camp to elsewhere, and also you’ll get enough money to pay off your bounties and take trains and coaches. Story is interesting, but it remains a pretty slow, but very detailed game.

Bleh, chariot gambling is no fun. People play differently when it's actually their big money on the line.

Volleyball tonight, council meeting and date night tomorrow, brew day and relaxing on Sunday. Try to fit in a couple gym visits here and there as well.

Splurge on a single malt Japanese whiskey?

Last night I found a local place that has a nice selection, but pricing was a bit high (on top of the hike in prices over the past few years for US distributors).

All good suggestions. Unfortunately they were out of St. Bernards! I’m going with Sazerac tonight. Got a bottle of Redemption Rye- nothing fancy but will do the trick. Rounding out the weekend selection with a pack of Shed Mountain Ale, a pack of Devils Purse Brewing Co. ESB, a big bottle of Schneiderweiss Aventinus Dopplebock, and a can of Building 8 IPA for my wife. Artifact Cider was doing a tasting at the local shop and I was pleased to find out they are moving their operation (including a tasting room) from Boston out here to the wilds of Western Mass right down the street (almost literally in the shadow of the Northampton VA, to keep this post slightly on the the topic of the board).

PSYDR- I was eyeing the Offerings from Hudson. Do you have a favorite?

In terms of rye preference: Manhattan Rye>Maple Cask Rye>Sazerac>Bullet Rye.

I’m not a big rye guy, but I may add a couple to my offerings.

I went to grab a fresh bottle of Woodford Reserve last night, and I ended up purchasing a bottle of Macallan Quest instead. I had never heard of it, but the owner of this hole in the wall place recommended it. Obviously a far diff option than my old faithful of WR, but I’m curious.
 
I'm on jury today. Just a bunch of waiting for me at the moment.

I've rarely checked this thread. Apparently other people like beer as well here?

Ahh. That makes sense (and is a convenient reason to leave work early). Unfortunately for me, my MR is not very E, so sabotaging the internet (as I assume WisNeuro did) will not result in me leaving any earlier today.

Bingo.

I refuse to use any and all electronic assessment measures unless there are solid norms to support electronic administration, and not just the publisher saying they are equivalent measures.

I don't use any electronic assessments because computers are shiny, fragile, and expensive and the 2-year-olds i work with are impulsive, reckless,like to smash things, and often have very sticky or slimy stuff on their fingers. I have a hard enough time keeping them from grabbing my pen and scribbling all over the protocols. Computers really wouldn't work that well.

Returning attorney calls this afternoon. Then travel. Gotta make some business decisions like hiring or cutting back or something.
 
Waiting for the contractor redoing my bathroom to show up and finishing up some paperwork today. Where did I leave the booze again?

Not bad, but I am a huge fan of that Aventinus from last weekend. If you like lager, check out Bluepoint Toasted Lager. A favorite of mine.

I’ll give it a try. My previous experience with rauchbiers is that they taste like band-aids smell! It an oddly specific thing with me!

Aventinus is real good. The ESB I had last week (Devils Purse) turned out to be one of my all time favorites.

ETA- I just checked out Blue Point website, and it would seem that “toasted” is not the same as “smoked.” It’s the smoked ones that taste like band-aids.

Now you all got me hyped.

Blue Point is now an ABInBev product, in case that mattes to you. It not uncommon to dislike smoked beers and to describe it as band-aids. Band aids equate to phenolics in a beer, which is bad in large quantities. However, for traditionally smoked beers (e.g., rauch) those are not phenolics but smoked malts. Sorry, if no one cares or already knew that.

I had a few local beers today. What really stood out was a bourbon barrel imperial stout and a bretty wit.

I should check this thread out more often.

I've got a Red IPA in fermentation at the moment, smells great. Heading to a new brewery later this afternoon, then maybe to the brewery we own shares in. Just have to finish up a presentation I need to polish up for next week first.
