Friday thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It's Friday and it has been a long week. Going to get a quick workout in and then order in some food and make myself a cocktail. Will need to get some work done related to my new position as a board member of a psych org (while asking myself why I decided to give myself more work for no reason). My wife is pushing for use to go out to a restaurant for the first time in over a year as we are both vaccinated now. I can't decide if this is a good idea or not. Thoughts anyone?

The MIL is in town. We are planning on date night next week. Also both vaccinated and >2weeks post second dose at this point. Not 100% safe, but we are ok with dinner out once in a great while now while maintaining other safety measures.

We are pretty much in the same boat (other than the fact that I don't need babysitters for a date night). More than 2 weeks post second dose. Plan on being socially distanced, etc. Still, the thought just feels odd after a year of not going out.

Yeah, in the past year I have had 2 meals out on very spread out patios in the open air and that's been it in terms of restaurant dining. Going to feel weird sitting inside.

We found out our dog has lymphoma and has 4-6 weeks left. She's responding well to prednisone and is basically back to her old self, so we'll keep her comfy until it's time and the prednisone stops working. Were gonna go with a in-home euthanasia service. Other than that, I'm gonna go to that dwelling (I caught a cold) on Monday. We're gonna walk to dinner tonight.

If it were me, it would depend on if there were unvaccinated people at home or if restaurant was indoors or outdoors.

Are there any restaurants near you that have those igloo things? Private bubble might be better than being indoors. But that depends on your comfort level.

To be honest I have been out by myself and with my parents maybe once every few weeks since the summer. I have found that when indoor dining was finally allowed, there wasn’t much crowds and the restaurants did a good job of keeping social distance. Outdoor dining over the summer had more people due to the nicer weather. But that is location dependent. Hope you find a solution you are both comfortable with. 🙂

After years of doing assessments where ~75% of the clients come from dual-language (Spanish-English) or primarily Spanish speaking homes, I took the leap and registered for Spanish classes, starting Thursday evening. I wasn't sure what level to put myself in, so the Language Institute set up a call with the primary instructor, where she would interview in Spanish and see where I should start. I think I was more nervous and anxious awaiting the call, and more wound up afterwards, than when I defended my dissertation- I was literally shaking, and I'm a relatively calm person when it comes to evaluations and speaking to others! My wife is still making fun of me today. Oh well, I better go prepare for class!

It is Friday and it has been a long week. Had to do a final review of my taxes before the accountant files them and the HVAC system in the house broke this week and had to get fixed. My patients and their families seem to be losing their temper more easily too and the limitations of virtual/phone care are getting to me at this point. On the bright side, my dinner out last weekend went well (I finally found a reason to wear dress clothes!) and I made time for a virtual happy hour with work colleagues and a virtual hangout with friends, which has definitely helped me feel more upbeat.

Every spring our AC seems to go out 🙁. Hope it's not too expensive.

We're celebrating our 5 year wedding anniversary this weekend. The weather is kind crappy, but I think I might brave a bike ride. The start date at my new job got pushed back a couple of days, so that's nice.

I'm so happy it's Friday. I plan on doing diss revisions, resin casting, WoW, and hanging out with my cat and husband.
I've been seeing some dude who puts all sorts of pop foods (e.g., mcburgers, hotdogs) in resin. What do you cast?

It has been a pretty long week, but I had two intakes no-show today, so I'm thankful for a chill day. I got the stuff for sazeracs yesterday and gave it my first go last night. It was alright but I think I might half the Peychaud's on the next try.

Not a big fan of anise, takes a lot of cocktails off the table for me.

Mostly flowers. I like to add little insect charms in them too. I needed something that was creative but didn't let me fuss with it too much. I started with watercolor. I hated it because I would overwork everything. Resin gives a small window, and I have to practice letting go of perfection. It's cathartic and still ends up being pretty! I'll have to check out the food-based resin casting.

I haven't looked forward to a Friday this much in a long, long time.

Long week and it is hard to believe it has been a whole year now of mostly virtual work. Time for some reflection and a beverage or two.

If the first drink gets lost, you should to put some other drinks together to from a search party.... and you never have a search part of one.

I’m happy your cat has a husband.

I'm a sucker for it; has positive associations for me. But this was too much, even for me. I think the goal should be to at least taste the rye.
Coincidently, just yesterday I made a batch of cocktails called Indian Winters- basically a vodka sour made with a honey-cardamom syrup. You float a slice of star anise on the top. It doesn't impart any direct flavor, but the scent as you're drinking it changes the flavor profile of everything else.

I've never associated anise flavor with a Sazerac. Its certainly in the Peychauds, but the drink should be all about the rye.

I think the issue was the absinthe. I used lucid, which has an anise quality to it. I halved the Peychaud's and it was much better.

Early Friday this week. Backpacking to cabin in woods of Vermont. Pack contains the essentials- 750 ml of Larceny, a good selection of local craft brews, some ciders, and (guilty pleasure for this trip only) a small bottle of fire ball. Some new and classic sci-fi, as well as Cormac McCarthy, plus some games for entertainment. Maybe some food and an extra pair of socks, but not sure- there were other priorities to cram in there.

Is this the one you posted a picture of from the loo?

Welp, I threw down 170 on kickstarter today for Stellaris and I'm getting ready for a cross country road trip to help the parents move to SLC. It certainly feels like a friday with how much I've had to work the last few days to be ready for travel

I used to back al opt of kickstarter games back in the day, but just got burned too much.

I've been lucky I guess, or have been picky about who the developer is. some have been better than others for sure, but it's worked out for how much I game. I thought of you when I backed it- a 4x space exploration with some great looking dynamics

It's been a few years, maybe I should consider it again. After you get the game in a year-ish, let us know if it's worth buying.

We have our (virtual) accreditation site visit next week. I’m not even leading it, and I’m still drowning in so much administria that I want to cry.
I'd forgotten they were doing these virtually. I'm very curious to know how that actually works (and works out).

Iced decaf with oat/almond milk and Splenda.
