Great words, particularly coming from someone from 'Vanderblit' University.
😕
What's up with this doucebaggery all of a sudden?

If that was at all directed at me, I totally wasn't trying to be a douche. I was trying to lighten the mood after that slightly too-snarky of an end below:

While we're on the subject of spelling and grammar, it's "might've" and not "might of." It's short for "might have." "Might of" makes no sense.

This should hopefully save you a lot of embarrassment in the future when it actually counts.

😕

Not understanding homophonic phrases (especially when one is entirely nonsensical) isn't a simple slip of the keyboard.

Snarky as I may be, unwittingly parading your ignorance can be slightly embarrassing on an online forum, but potentially damning elsewhere.

I suppose I could've (not could of) gone about it in a more friendly way, but the "could of/would of/should of" errors are made entirely way too often these days. I suppose they're skipping over that series of contractions in grade school these days. There's a world of difference between transposing an "a" and an "s" in a word via mistyping and simply misunderstanding word usage.

Anyway, I'm done being a dick here, I realize this is unnecessary in this discussion. Let's get back to the original topic.

A recent conversation I had with my helicopter parents...I consider them pre-meds because they are more worried about the irrelevant **** than I am.

Mom: So what are you going to major in, sweetie?
Me: I don't really know yet. Whatever I find interesting, I guess.
Mom: Well, what majors does your school offer?
Me: *Gives mom book full of courses and majors offered by my school*
Mom: *Looks through book* Where is the Biology major???? Your school doesn't offer a Biology major???
Me: -_-
Dad: YOU BETTER NOT COME BACK WITH A PSYCHOLOGY MAJOR BOY. (all caps means he is yelling)
Me: -______-;

My school does offer a biology major, it's just not simply called "biology". I've tried telling my parents that one's major has no influence on getting into medical school. They simply refuse to believe me.

Guess that's comes with having African immigrants as parents...

Yah, URM status. 😀

👍

It's not just African parents, but helicopter parents (as you mentioned) who are deeply interested in their children going to the most direct route to medical school... choosing a major different from biology blocks this route. I told my parents I wanted to be a physics major, and they thought I'm going to be a physicist... It's not the 1980s anymore... Oh well. :smack:

Interestingly, my parents said people who want medical school major in biology, as opposed to my plans to major in psychology. Eventually, I relented, but chose microbiology instead of the traditional biology degree because I have better undergraduate research options, including better job prospects in case I want to take some time off. I am also relieved that I am not one of those who say, "Hey, I am Ashley and I am biology slash premed"

Convo with a distant family member that i havent seen in a while:

Her: Hey so what are you up to lately?
Me: Im in the process of applying to medical school.
Her: Oh medicine? Cool! What kind of doctor do you want to be?
Me: Not too sure yet. Ill see what i like.
Her: Um... Medical school isnt exactly the place to discover yourself...

Actually... It is:laugh:

Duh...that is why you do clinical rotations and clerkships.

I still get asked what my "major" is in med school (like if we major in Pediatrics or Psychiatry or something). And some people thought I was supposed to choose my specialty from day 1. I have no clue what specialty I want to do.

Also back in college, someone asked me what kind of doctor I would want to be if I got into med school. I said I was interested in neurosurgery at the time. She responded, "That's cool. But what would be even cooler would be a brain surgeon!"

I am a Zoology and Spanish major. When people ask me my major, everyone always comes to the conclusion that I want to run zoos in Latin America. I then tell them I am applying to medical school and they give me a horrified look like someone didn't tell me I had to major in biology to be a doctor. My degree is Zoology is even tailored to being a premed student because everything is changed to having a human focus. I took human anatomy instead of mammalian anatomy, my mammalian physiology class was a human physiology class, etc.

I have to explain that you can major in anything since we all have to attend medical school. I just picked zoology because I liked the description of the classes when I was picking my major. My mom's friends still don't think I can be accepted with my majors.

At least you have an ultimate "I told you so" moment ahead of you. 😀

I understand completely. My pet peeve is the misuse of affect vs effect. It irks me so.

bigot.....
I totally read it that way at first glance. LoL

Reminds me of a girl in my undergrad. She said "I want to be a peds CV doctor". I used to tutor her - could barely pass math; I think she finished undergrad with a 3.3 25 MCAT. Managed to make it in to an American MD school. And wait for it...

We found out she matched CV surgery... Joke is on us... 🙂

she came, saw, and conquered

My sister and I were playing Scrabble a few weeks before I started school. She puts down the word "shin"

me: what's shin?

(awkward silence)

ohhhh right!

her: how did you get into med school?! :slap:

haha I do things like that all the time in word games, especially crossword puzzles. I'll read a normal word out loud in some weird way and say "wtf does that mean." Usually my girlfriend just laughs at me.

Every person I've ever talked to after I told them I was studying Neuroscience

"So you want to be a neurosurgeon huh?"

I still frequently get this even IN med school when my undergrad major comes up during small talk.

In undergrad I did actually think about neurosurgery for a while. Then I met a neurosurgeon.

Whenever someone asks me what I'm studying:

Me: I'm a psych major, trying to get into med school.

Them: Oh, so you want to be a psychologist? Why not become a real doctor?

Sounds like they are not listening properly. Granted, they are correct in the fact that a psychologist is not an M.D., assuming a "real" doctor is an M.D., all the same. Ears, you have them for a reason. 😀

I have a real winner right here.

So we recently had a new undergrad join the lab, and this guy has already annoyed EVERYONE by not shutting up about medicine and volunteering in the hospital. That is literally ALL he talks about even though everyone in the lab are hardcore researchers and couldn't care less.

So today he turns to me and tells me he's losing interest in medicine, and kind of wants to do research now. He says he's really interested in biological weapons research.

I'm like, oh, you mean you want to design vaccines or something against bio weapons?

He's like, no I want to design and invent biological weapons.

I'm like, 😱:scared::laugh:

He has a 20 page long microsoft word document where he saves all of the images he runs across

No they are saved in bookmarks for easy access. Also you both may want to Google bad joke eel know your meme 😛

This is not that bad, but a misinformed girl in my bio class today said
"I either want to be a doctor or a neurologist" 😵

So I went to my schools pre-med club tonight and I was reminded why I stayed away from it all of these years.

Some highlights would be

Club pres: "So I learned from my pre-MD/PhD research seminar that you have to box check research, clinical stuff, teaching, volunteering otherwise you have no chance at all (pointing to venn diagram of where circles intersect at the perfect applicant) ."

Club pres: "They told me this is how they rank the importance of clinical: volunteering in nursing homes>EMT>hospital volunteer>anything else. And they are Ivy so they know what they are talking about"

Club pres: "If you go on SDN people will just cut you down if you are less than 40T and 3.8, SDN is full of jerks" I'm sure the UD threads would be amazed at this statement.

There were some others (generally just complete inability to describe what osteopathic medicine is).

I should add that the president is a sophomore who hasn't applied, much less even taken the MCAT, yet seems to think she knows everything about applying/interviewing/test taking and gave advice on all of those.

It all just made me laugh.

My pre-med club is the same way. I learned more in an hour screwing around on SDN than I did in a month going to that stupid club. Some people are just idiots...

*Freshman year. First day of General Biology*

Professor asks: "Who in here wants to become a doctor?"
At least 100 hands go up

*3 classes later*

Professor: "We are down to 50 people in this class. Today is the last day to drop."

Lmao this is exactly how my gen bio teacher opened class too!

Professor: "who in here wants to go to medical school?"
*100 people raise their hand
Professor: statistically, 8 of you will get in. Welcome to college.

Hahahaha -- he's holding back a laugh the entire time...

"going into a class thinking hey maybe I can learn something," yeah... I would say that is a major goal...

in my genetics lab class we were doing some extremely cool antibiotic resistance plating/screening.

Premed lab partner: IS THIS GOING TO BE ON THE EXAM with a panicked look on his face. I don't understand this.

Me: Spend 15 minutes explaining a really cool thing, and some other details related to that question.

Lab partner: SO DO YOU THINK THIS WILL BE ON THE EXAM? I need a 94 percent on my midterm, and then i can slack off with a 80 something (don't remember exact) on final.

Me: Uhh I don't know?

Lab partner: finds lab ta and wastes a long amount of precious lab time with fear.

Me: Got top marks in both midterm and final 😎

Do you want a sticker or something? :eyebrow:

I used to think that going to medical school and coming out a doctor meant you could do anything (surgery, family practice, psychiatry, etc...) The things you learn as time goes on.

"I got accepted last year, but I decided not to go because I want to hold out for a full scholarship" This from a 3.5/28 applicant.

I was told be a guy I knew in undergrad that he had been accepted MD/PhD. Then nobody saw him that year... until we ran into him working at Home Depot. Then he ended up working at a company I did about a year later where he told me that he went into a PhD program and completed everything after a year and decided to take a year off.

yeeeeeeeeeep

The program was much too stressful. Why do people have to lie?

Applying to med school has come down to Venn diagrams? Really?

No wonder I'm so cynical about this process.
