GEMS Georgetown 2009-2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
From my past knowledge, the committee will call the west coast people 1st because they have to make travel arrangements to get to the east coast.
Again, good luck!
Btw, don't worry about the "tests" especially if you just took the mcat!

haha thanks..

but JUST IN CASE, i want ya'll to know I'm going to be asking each one of you how your experience was.

haha : P

also, do you guys have any advice what I should do as a recent college graduate that can't afford to go back to school and still wants to be a doctor?

Be a medical technologist for a year? Move to Washington DC to be a homeless person spreading the good news of Jesus? ( the later was a serious thought.. at least, while studying for the MCAT retake)
find a research job, be an EMT, teach for America (I think this is 2 years?)

Is that for real???? Because that would mean that people like me who live just outside of Washington DC still have a shot. Just got back from Mass so I've been praying A LOT for this to happen 😀

🙁 I'm on the west coast. I have a pit in my stomach now.

DrKMD... Same here.

not to be a downer at all, but out of 200 applicants they only had to call 60 (30%). from other posts they started calling friday, so i cant imagine it would take til thursday to call 60 people. Mind you, i could be absolutely wrong, but it's just my take on it. hope I dont offend anyone

anyone know how many students they will be taking this year?

They have accepted 18-20% of all applicants or 61% of interviewees, so get either of those numbers and you have a decent guess.

🙁 Great...well congrats to all of you that did get an interview! Good luck and let us know how it goes!

For those of you who are interviewing April 20, 2009, where do you plan on staying??

I would like a hotel very close to campus to ensure I arrive on time Monday morning....

I hear we should receive information about Hotels and info for Interview day but havent received anything yet...

i was told that the package would include a hotel that would offer a discount to students interviewing at the med school...not sure how close it is to the campus

I haven't received anything yet. I am so nervous about this interview... This is my chance and I don't want to blow it.

this is madness!! the closer you try to stay (in a hotel) to the university, the more outrageous the prices become. anyone find any decent under $100 per night hotels? id like to make a reservation as early as possible in hopes that the rates will be lower

"$290 per night you say? Thats it? Just put it on my med school tab."

I'm hoping the student package has a D.C. hotel for under $80 otherwise I'll stick with the $89 one in VA.

The hotel in VA seems like the best bet so far... Does the metro stop near there?

Check out this one:

$87/night, Hilton, 8miles away /10 minute metro ride to central DC. can't do much better i think.

Do you guys know if there are any W, Westin, or Sheraton near the point of interview? I'm planning to get there on Saturday and stay until Tuesday.

Actually, there's an awesome new Westin in Arlington (10 minutes form DC) which I stayed at this summer. It's brand spanking new so it looks great but it has not come up in my price search so it's likely gonna be expensive.

btw, will we be interviewed at the medical school or at another location?

Is there something going on on the week of 5/4? Seems like hotel prices are up the roof~!!

me too bro. I stutter and mumble when I get nervous. lol. i think i'm going to load up on coffee before i go in.

lol, i suggest you go with no caffeine as it will only make your stuttering and mumbling much worse. you interview on the 4th right? maybe we will bump into each other 🙂

Not gonna front, I'm very nervous myself but I think it helps if you think of yourself as already accepted. So at this point you're not trying to prove anything, just assuring them that you are their choice. This has always helped me.

if yesterday was an indicator, calls for more interviews should be made at around this time...

However, if yesterday was the last day, I guess i'll see ya'll maybe next year ? : P

I'm in the same boat ragstoMD. It sucks, b/c I really want to interview for GEMS : ( ....I sent them an e-mail..if someone responds, I'll let you know. In the meantime, stay prayerful.

I realllly hope they just base acceptance on interviews and maybe the exams we'll be taking. I really don't want them to look at my application again cause I'm afraid they might have 2nd thoughts. lol

That's true... I didn't think I would get this far. I have to show them that they made the right choice by calling me.

i agree, im still wondering how much the tests have to do with our acceptance. is it true there's an essay to write as well?

I appear to be the only other person in this thread interviewing on the 20th... that does seem like quite a deal though.

1) Buy Nice Suit
2) Book Room
3) Study for Test
4) Prep for Interview
5) Pack toiletry for hotel
6) Get good night's rest before interview

Hey guys,

For those of ya'll that already graduated college ( I am graduating this May)
Can I ask what ya'll did right out of college?

I'm not really experienced ( just volunteered in molecular lab) and have a lower gpa.

Any suggestions of what I should do?

Here's what I did after I graduated from college... I was unemployed for 1 year, started my business in cell phone recycling (failed), got into IT administration (resigned), and worked in the healthcare field (loved).

I'd say find a job, take some evening challenging science classes to prove you're hungry to get to ur goal, volunteer/work part-time as an EMT-B.

Rags, build a solid resume and apply for temp jobs in the pharmaceutical industry which dont require much experience and apply broadly. For example, I started out as an associate scientist making $17/hr about a week out of school which is not great but decent for a freshly minted bachelors. There are tons of temp pharma jobs, especially in this unstable economy where many perm jobs are fading, so apply to as many as you can. The point is getting enough experience as a temp (1-2 years) and then applying for higher level, well paying jobs.

I'm wearing a charcoal pinstriped suit. Macy's is running INCREDILE deals on suits. I got a Michael Kors for $180.

what color suit you guys wearing?

silver metallic with a gold shirt and platinum tie..o yea, got my bling bling too!! gold grill with the chain to match YEYA!!

MK for $180? No way~! Lucky! I'm a skinny dude and it's really hard for me to find anything at Macy's that fits right. I'll probably try Men's Wearhouse or hit up Bloomy.

What color shirt? hehehe

I'll buy you dinner if you actually sport that to the interview. LoL
