Thanks for this info. I got a postcard about a week ago stating that "as of March 27, 2009, my application is complete."

My app has been reviewed, but no call yet. For those of you with interviews, how early did you submit all your materials? I'm still praying that I get this chance to interview, enroll in GEMS Program, and to attend Georgetown U Med School.

A side note, do you guys mind sharing your race/ethnicity? I am Hmong.

2) i hate to be biased but i really really hope rags2md gets a phone call soon. he seems like a cool guy.

2 more bits of stats folks:

1) 42 were interviewed last year and 27 were accepted. 27/42 = 64%
2) 18 posters from the 2008 thread reported an interview invite and 11 of them were accepted. 11/18 = 61%

Well, let us all pray that we are the 64% being admitted into the GEMS Program this year. We have all worked very hard to come this far and everyone on the SDN board have been mutually supportive of each other. There is nothing better than being mutually supportive during times of uncertainty.

Stay positive and what is meant to happen will happen. Good Luck Everyone!

Definitely, Fly. I like to stress the importance of that 60+% number. We can do this.

For what it is worth, we have to also assume that some of the SDN'ers were admitted into the GEMS Program, but did not announce their admission on the board.

So that is another reason to be positive until GEMS Program notify each and everyone of us otherwise. 😀

it's so obvious what kind of students some of you guys will be, i laugh when i think of the effort you guys put forth to research last years posts and crunch numbers in an effort to make us feel better about our chances of becoming GEMS. theres no doubt you will represent the GEMS program well
 
FYI: Those of us who are interviewing on April 20, 2009, don't forget to bring an umbrella. There is a chance that there will be rain. I just checked the forecast.

Thanks Fly, I was thinking of picking up a dollar store rain poncho last night actually but your info confirmed it.

Forget umbrellas, I embrace the rain, and when I don't, I emit radiation that instantly evaporates rainwater and converts it to a slight breeze with the odor of freshly baked cinnamon rolls.

Ok, so what is everyone doing to make the time fly until and after the interview? The period after I'm sure will be 10x more stressful for me so give me some ideas, folks!😀

Thanks for sharing Plastic. I may go catch the Phillies game on Fri. vs the Padres but ti will be a guilty pleasure b/c my brok azza' needs to save money for school. It would be a great time burner though. I may try to visit family as well though.

When I was home (NYC), I was something of a trainspotter, or a railfan. I would go to the subway and just ride the trains all around the city. If I wasn't riding in the trains, I was taking photos of them in motion, as well as other types of trains and mass transit. I guess it was the complexity of of the NYC subway, or the fact that your options were unlimited for $2.00, or the different cultures that you are exposed to, but something drew me to the subways all the time, and it was always something that kept me calm, and definitely burned time. Unfortunately, there is none of that at school. (but the buses are pretty cool, haha)

I have never experienced the WMATA Metro, but I said the first thing I would do was spend a couple of hours riding the different lines and seeing as much of the DC area as possible, also taking pictures. For me, this will definitely keep my stress levels to a minimum and become a great addition to my train picture collection.

Ah, dude that is so unique. You should definitely bring that up if you are able to in the interview. Thus, your former picture of a moving train right?

Exactly, I believe that pic was a Kawasaki R62, signed as a South Ferry bound 1 Local train departing 34th Street, on the 7th Avenue Line. (Haha, this is what happens when you practically live in the subway) If possible, I could bring that up.

But yeah, the gym works as well.
 
I have so much school work to do before graduation, but it is seriously soooo hard for me to concentrate and be productive!!

I'm a big fan of the new R142s. The ride is much smoother and it doesn't grind against the rails like the R62s on its route from Wall St. to Clark St (2, 3 line). That high pitch grinding is insanely annoying.

Annoying? that high pitched squealing was music to my ears, and the lightning effect from the shoes touching the third rail? Don't get me started, I can go all day, haha. Just thinking about it makes me homesick! The 2 trains mostly use R142s (as are the rest of the numbered routes 1-7), which are similar to the R143s and R160s used on the division B routes (A-Z), but I agree, they are pretty nice and smooth rides. The only problem I have with them are since they now all have full width cabs, they no longer have a front window that one can look directly at the tracks in front of the train, which I loved. They're ordering tons of new trains, and soon the entire fleet may be R142s and R160s.

Before and after interview, well school is keeping me real busy. I can't wait for graduation. 🙂

Moto: You can do it! I am also finishing up with school (graduate school) too and things have been real busy. I hope this willl make you feel better when I say that you are not alone and I am in the same boat as you. I know sometime its easier when you know there is someone out there who can relate to you.

Good luck with the remainder of your school and do well! PM me if you need any advice or input. I know it is tough especially during the last quarter or semester right before graduation.

Awwww, Thrombosis, that would have been so cool but I have to be back home by 10:30PM to pick up my mom from the airport. 🙁

How long ago did you do GEMS and looking back how do you feel about having been a GEMS student?

If I didn't have to go to work that night and prepare for an exam on Tuesday morning, I would definitely have stayed to socialize.

Thanks thrombosis!! I also have to get back later that night unfortunately! I am not sure if it will work out with other peoples schedules, but I can possibly meet before the interview. If others are interested please let everyone know.

That's good Fly. Keep to those books: great way to pass the time and it keeps your mind elastic. Which reminds me, forget the Phillies game, I'm gonna continue studying hard for this science assessment. Even though we are told we dont need to study, "dont need" does not mean "should not" so I am studying.

I wish I could start studying for the science assessment, but the work that my classes are putting on me now is insane, and with work, I don't have time for much else. I'm going to see if I can go through some EK materials starting this afternoon or tomorrow...
 
I too agree that since most of us will be arriving earlier that any planned socials should be before the interviews 🙂

Thank you for the offer. Unfortunately, I leave Georgetown the night of the interview. I have to make it back to CA for a midterm exam. I hope everyone who can make it have fun.

GujuDoc, thank you very much for all of your responses and encouragements ever since the beginning. Your advice and everyone else's input on this board really played a major role in my application to the GEMS Program. Like so many on this board, we all have a dream of becoming a physician and to help those who need it the most.

I wish you much luck in gaining admission into the Georgetown's SMP program. If we are all admitted into Georgetown, we should all plan a get together because it would be so much better if all of us can put a face to the names that have at one point or another provided advice or support during this time of uncertainty.

To Everyone: It is very obvious that all of us on here are extremely motivated, but for one reason or another, we were dealt a bad hand in life. The fact that none of us gave in and submitted to defeat, is the very reason why we are all here today. I truly wish everyone luck on their interview (April 20th and May 4th ) and also for those who are still waiting for the interview invitation. Once again, Good Luck! :luck::xf::luck::xf:👍 🙂

Does anyone know if there is available parking on Georgetown campus for our interviews??

Or should I leave my rental car at the hotel and taxi to the interview
