GEMS Georgetown 2009-2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
A current GEMS student posted that parking is difficult to obtain near GUSOM and that the parking maids are fierce. If you can afford it, take the taxi.
Does anyone know if there is available parking on Georgetown campus for our interviews??

Or should I leave my rental car at the hotel and taxi to the interview

I will most likely take the train or bus it to the campus area.

Need a quick advice.

This year, I was voted and currently serving as the president of the entire graduate class 2009 and I have been selected by the deans office to prepare a commencement speech representing the school. As I prepare my commencement speech, I am wanting to mention a few professors who really helped me and treated me like a son during my graduate course studies.

Do you guys think this is a good idea? If I wanted to thank my professors openly, do you guys think it is the right place to do it during commencement? 😕😕😕😕😕

Not trying to hijack the thread, but just looking for a quick advice.

Thanks you guys.

Fly, absolutely nothing wrong with that as long as its not uncomfortably long or misplaced within the speech (not in the beginning or right at the end)

...you can also do something like a pre-speech: "before I start, I'd like to thank..."

or you can incorporate it into the speech to describe the quality and integrity of the professors at your school and how it helps to form the most outstanding employees/people

Right on Tachy, this is a great way as well.

Only 1 weekday to go!!!!😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀

so are most of the April 20th people arriving on saturday or sunday?

I will be arriving Sunday to save money on the hotel stay. You?

i interview on the 4th, and i arrive saturday afternoon..lol, is it lame that i am nervous and excited for everyone preparing for monday's interview?

Maxim and Tachy: Thank you guys very much for the suggestion. I think I will do what was suggested. 🙂

I am arriving Saturday night.

For those of us still waiting, if you have recently contacted the GEMS Program inquiring the status of your application, you will find that they are now sending out automated responses to your inquiries.

Good news. They are still reviewing applications for interview invitation. All hope is not lost. 🙂

That's great to hear!!😀 Hopefully some more on this thread will be called.

If I can't get anyone to take my shift at work, I will leave at around 1am Monday morning. If someone does take my shift, I will be here as early as Sunday morning.

Nah man. It's nice to know actually.

Depending on far your hotel is from Georgetown. The patient parking lot I believe cost 24.00 for the day, if you take a cab 16.00 each way does not make economical sense. However you want to make sure you are at Georgetown before your interview time. So give yourself ample time to ensure a parking spot.

Well....I received a letter of rejection from Georgetown GEMS today. I guess they do notify you if you don't get an interview. I just wanted to let those people know that are still waiting that you will not be left in limbo.

I want to congratulate all of you who have received interviews and hopefully you will all be accepted by the end of May. As for me, this is the end of the line for this so it has been nice talking to you all and good luck.

Peace out!👍

You know I was looking up your old posts to see what your numbers were. I think the reasons you might have gotten rejected are because they think your numbers are higher then what they are looking for and you don't have that whole URM status. Also are you severely disadvantaged?? Not sure if you are but I'd try to apply for regular SMPs if I were you.

You might want to look into some of the other normal SMPs. I think you stand a chance.

Thank you very much for the response. I actually thought the same thing. My grades and scores are too high for this. I have had my disadvantages but I wouldn't call them severe. As far as the SMP program, you have to have at least a 28 on the MCAT's and I had a 27Q which disqualified me.

I just want to say :luck:Good Luck:luck: to everyone who will be interviewing on April 20, 2009 with me. I can't wait to see everyone there and also the current GEMS students who have been providing their input here on the SDN Board.

I hope we can all become classmates when the 2009 GEMS class begins on July 9, 2009. 🙂

Have a safe flight for those of us who are flying in and for those who are driving, please drive safely.

Lastly, I wanted to remind everyone once again to bring an umbrella. There is a 50% chance that it may rain on Monday.

Fly, thanks for reminding me. Just fished out my umbrella from the closet.👍

hmmmm....i wonder how rain boots would look with my suit..??

lol😀...but hey, if anyone is wondering where SW107 is, check out this info from a former GEM:

SW 107 is on the 1st floor of the Med-Dent building (the main medical building). If you enter from the main entrance (facing the street ), take the right hall way after you enter the building and go all the way down. SW 107 is at then end of the last hall way on your right. I am sure you will see signs.

If you look at "3900 reservoir rd 25007" in gmaps, I believe the Med-Dent building is the H-shaped building you see in the satellite image.

I wonder if I'd be disqualified with a 3.0gpa and a 30L MCAT. I have had some pretty serious disadvantages (ie. ESL, first-gen college student, very low-income family for examples).

I highly doubt your numbers would DQ you for GEMS, mr2trd3. I say that b/c GEMS applicants have stats that span a range. For example, if you look at past threads, some people had stats good enough to get accepted into med school (alan06 from last year) and others unsurprisingly did not. Also, remember that they base their decision on many other factors too like the essay fields in the application.

Give it a chance man! We have until the 24th:xf::xf::xf:

You might not be but you would qualify for virtually any SMP with those numbers. it is probably too late to apply fo this year but have you ever looked into Wake Forest postbac or Drexel DPMS? Those are other URM/Disadvantaged persons based SMPs. They are also pretty good.

But I think with stats like that you'd get into the normal SMPs as well and would probably get in somewhere as long as you do well.

Are you applying right now?? I'm confused. Please clarify.

It may have DQ'ed you and me as well. I interviewed last year when I had a 2.7/28. I took more post-bac classes (got Dean's list) and raised my MCAT to a 31Q (9v, 11p, 11b) and I'm not getting an interview this year. I also did an insane amount of volunteer work - at a clinic for the underserved, on the executive committee of a local political group (school board members, people on city council, former state senators, etc), and I tutor at an after school center for inner city kids. As far as disadvantages, I got the FAP from AMCAS twice, so by their standards I'm disadvantaged. All this improvement and no interview.

And it is official. I got the letter today that I won't be interviewed. I'm still in so much shock about their decision I don't really know what to think of it.

I am sorry to hear that effwun. Did you ask them last year why they did not take you?

Sorry to hear that. Maybe you have become competitive in their eyes to go straight into med school with your graduate GPA since a 31 MCAT and a 3.5+ GPA is phenomenal. My question really is why did you not go in the first time. You sound like a stand-up guy.

I'm not even going to recommend other programs as I know most of us have our hearts set on G-Town.

No. They tell you politely not to ask why. But I had been in contact with the student who was my guide during the interview...told him what I was doing and he thought I was doing all the right things, but to focus on GPA/MCAT.

Thanks for all the input guys.

I received the rejection letter on Saturday. Still a bit bummed out, but I still have an application at UConn and one going out to Drexel DPMS. I hope one of these places will take me in.

Good luck to all who will interview. I know you guys will make wonderful GEMS students and doctors.

Hi all!

I'm from the DC area, and I received the phone call last Monday about my interview invite on April 20th. I was told that a letter with more information was mailed out, but I haven't received it as of yet. Were there any other details that we needed to know besides meeting in the Med-Dent Building Room SW 107 by 8:00AM? Anything we should bring?

Thanks for reading this. Looking forwarding to meeting ya'll tomorrow!

Are than any statistics for GEMS based on race/ethnicity? Did anyone that is a non-URM receive an interview? I am white and applied to GEMS as a disadvantaged candidate. The $130 was difficult for my family to pay with an adjusted gross income of less than $20,000 a year. I thought I had a good chance of getting an interview with my qualifications, but I received a rejection letter last week. I had a 26 MCAT and a 3.4 GPA. Maybe my stats are too high for GEMS? Unfortunately, they are too low for everything else. I am stuck in limbo, $130 poorer. Good luck to all those that received interviews!

No, nothing else besides the schedule and hotel discount information was in the packet, Quitecontrary. You're good to go!

Webbster, Maxim3L, Flownominal, MeDMERgency, OnTheFly, Lovelife08

Good Luck to all of you guys tomorrow!!! be calm stay cool and have fun!! we will anxiously wait to hear all about it when you guys get back!!

Best of luck to everyone interviewing tomorrow!!!🙂

Oh, man... I just got to my hotel room. It's in Springfield, VA, not exactly the closest to Georgetown, but for $60 I can't complain. It's pretty nice, actually. However, I'm more nervous than ever. Maybe I should walk to the metro station and go into the city for a couple of hours...

you think the GEMS interviewers will ask them to practice discretion until everyone has been interviewed?

Definitely, Tachy. We're all buds here but to not cross any ethical lines, we should probably keep feedback about the interview to a minimum until everyone has interviewed.

I wish everyone the best as well. See you guys there!!😀

mr2trd3,

I really don't think you need GEMS, disadvantages or not. I think GEMS is for the people who cant get past early 20s on the MCAT no matter how hard they try or people who are in situations as bad as the one OnTheFly discussed.

I think you should focus on applying to regular SMPs. You will qualify for every single normal SMP out there and most likely get n quite a few. With a 3.0 with an upper trend in your GPA, a strong MCAT score like yours, ood letters, good ECs, etc. you will get into Gtown's normal SMP program as long as they aren't full already and same with other similar programs. i'd highly consider applying to both normal and minority based SMPs rather then just the minority based SMPs. Keep in mind the non minority based SMPs have a higher number of admittances so will work out better in terms of chances of getting in one. Good luck with the other minority based SMPs that you are applying to as well though.

Remember the good points though, having a 30 on the MCAT is amazing and even a lot of nondisadvantaged nonminorities I know who have had enough resources to get a good education don't always get 30. you just need a GPA boost and that will work out best with any SMP regardless of whether it is a minority based one or nonminority based one.

Good luck.

Depending on your GPA they will look at you on a case by case basis at Gtown. However, you would still qualify for IMS at Drexel, BU MAMS, Tufts MBS, UCincy MS in Physio, Loyola MAMS, RFU BMS, and the others. Some of them have passed their deadlines like EVMS BMS and USF IMS. but the others I listed before those 2 programs are all still taking apps from my understanding.

They are good enough for DO schools but also some regular SMPs will take them, granted far fewer then normal. But Loyola MAMS or BU MAMS will take them. Tufts MBS might consider it too.

gujuDoc,

Thank you so much for your advice and encouragement. I do have applications out to two more SMP's and am planning to add more once I get back from a medical school interview this Friday.

If anyone knows of any solid SMP's that are still open (ie. deadline not passed yet), please PM me or post here.

Again, congrats to those who will be interviewing. Best of luck. I'll be praying for you guys, too.

The whole list of the regular SMPs is stickied at the top of this thread with deadlines, etc.

but the ones that still have not surpassed the deadline includes Gtown SMP--its other SMP program, BU MAMS, Tufts MBS, and a few others. Check the list.

Just had my interview today. All I can say is WOW!!!

Great program. Great Support System. Proven to work...
Lots of hard work and a long road ahead🙂

For those interviewing May 4th, you will leave Georgetown with ALL your questions and concerns answered.

My pointers for the day:

1. Be yourself
2. Know something about Georgetown
(might be asked during your interview)
3. Be prepared to spend 10 hours there
4. Be yourself

Any specific questions, please feel free to message me.

To all others, Good Luck. You will do fine. Just relax and be yourself (if I havent stressed this enough)

Webbster speaks the truth. I am truly impressed with this program, and hope to be back in July!
