GEMS Georgetown 2009-2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Well it should be over by now. Hopefully someone will not be too tired and start the post cascade!!😀

interview day was everything i hoped it would be!!! im not tired but i am not feeling very well. however i couldnt let you guys down and not post after you have been patiently waiting to hear from us... i love everything about the program and how it helps the students to do so well in med school.

hey dan, if you are reading this thanks for backing me up!! you left before i could get your contact info..but good luck!

Awesome man. Hope your interview went smoothly. Cant wait for some more testimonials!!!

My bad, I forgot to talk about my experience. It was surprisingly laid back although I tripped up a little in my interview but overall it was a great experience. Everybody was simply cool to talk to and they were so helpful. Some of the staff are a little intimidating but I think the bootcamp mentality is what leads to that 80%+ Georgetown med admission. You learn to be an academic soldier. Can't wait. So souped.

Cool, cool. That sounds kinda like my experience a few weeks ago. Good stuff, and I hope that we all learn that we will become classmates in two weeks! I'm pumped as well.

And now the waiting game begins...

"we all learn that we will become classmates in two weeks" brings chills to my spine. Dear Lord, am I hoping to get that call.

Just got back and I must say that the program is everything I hoped for. The people are so relaxed and so willing to help! I really hope I get in.

What did you guys think about the test? I thought it was insanely hard and don't think I got any questions right. 🙁

haha, same here Plastic. That thing was ridiculous. I'll take their word for it when they say it has no bearing in admission decisions.

I think we all felt that way, unless some of the interviewees were geniuses or something...

I am just too nervous about the decision... for the next two weeks, I'm going to be mashing this F5 key like it was nobody's business, haha.

I got back last night and I'm sooooo impressed with the program! I thought the interview day went really well and I am praying I will be lucky enough to study with all those super smart and qualified interviewees! Good luck everyone : )

Thanks for sharing, Camby. I'm hoping they open up more seats this year. In 2007 they said they admitted 37 so I'm hoping it will be something like that this time around instead of the usual 27-30.

12 more days to go before we hear some news.

I don't know, I heard there were a lot of applicants this year, like last year. I think they may have more seats, at least I hope so...

See,looking at it more closely, one thing that is making me think the class will be ~30 is that they interviewed 23 on 4/20. I'm assuming they kept it symmetrical for 5/4 with another 23 for a total 0f 46 interviewees. So assuming that the 61% rate is still applicable, we get 28 spots for this year.

This is pure assumption on my part but it seems like a good guess. It'd be great if we could have a 30+ class though.

I'm not sure, but I thought that the 61% figure was an average, rather than absolute. I could be wrong, though.

we only had 22 on the 4th. did anyone follow up with their facilitators as far as answering those questions?? i figured them out!!!!

thanks for the compliment. i was impressed with how well the members of my group worked together during the FS portion of the day..

on another note, the best part of the day for me was Q&A...i was soooooooo motivated when i heard the third year say that she was using the concepts and strategies she learned during her GEMS year in her current medical education. i was even more proud to hear that one of the fourth years got matched at YALE UNIVERSITY for her neurology residency. very cool!!

I figure out mine as well, but I did not get back to them about it yet. The reason that I haven't was because soon after the April 20 interview date, the GEMS Facilitators were preparing for their own medical school interview and I did not want to trouble them with it. 🙂

I honestly hope they all get into Georgetown School of Medicine. :luck:

Well, like all of you, I am hoping for the good news. :luck:

I waited until the weekend to email them, as soon as I figured everything out, because I knew that they had upcoming interviews and such. I just haven't received a response yet, but I'm sure they're really busy. They were pretty cool, and I liked working with my group. I was pumped when one of my facilitators came up to me afterward and told me, "Good Job!"

I also realized how much I liked figuring out heart problems, and should look into that, haha.

I didnt email them because I thought we had correctly answered them in the session. That was a good move.

I don't think I did so hot during the FS. It's been so long since I took bio and I remember nothing. Bummer! I hope that didn't put too much of a negative impact when it comes to deciding my acceptance. 🙁

BTW, what are the answers to those two questions?

lol, you gotta do the research..thats what they expect of their future GEMS

I don't think it was so much as coming up with the right answer, but how you used your reasoning skills to come up with your conclusion. I'm sure you did fine.

Yeah, i thought my group answered the questions too. Eveyrone seemed satisfied and we had eliminated all the others choices.

And I also think appx. 30 is likely the class size if 45 were interviewed.

So when is the big day for you all to find out who was accepted? I wish you all :luck::luck::luck::luck::luck::luck:

Hey Guju, it should be next next Monday, the 18th. Last year they started calling on Monday the 19th. Thanks for the wishes. Any word from the SMP yet?

i think that they are going to be a bit behind this year. one of the current GEMS told me that it may be around the first week of JUNE. but finding out on the 18th would be completely awesome...only if i get in :luck::luck::luck::luck:

Say it aint so man. Let's hope they catch up this week. Another month would suck suck.

June!? I can't wait that long!

Speaking of the month June, they told me that it will most likely be June that is when they'll get to the waitlist. I guess it makes sense since Med school waitlist movement doesn't begin til May 15th so it will take some time to sort through. 🙂

so they actually have a wait-list??? thats pretty cool..gives me that much more hope

I think she meant the SMP. But if GEMS indeed has a waitlist that does give me more hope. Although, I doubt anyone will pass up G-town unless they were accepted straight into med school.

well, i know for a fact that a couple of the interviewees have been accepted into at least one medical program. but you are correct, i think that if given the opportunity to become a student in the 2010 matriculating class of GUMC by way of GEMS, most people would choose to do that. so there probably is no need for a wait-list with a program like GEMS

Did anyone get asked what med schools they applied to and if they have been accepted/waitlisted? How will this impact their decision?

I didn't get asked about any other medical school...

I was not asked but I think that's one of those things that's settled with a committee vote if it is known. They take everything they know about you into account and decide if GEMS is right for you.

Personally though, I say give folks a chance who show promise but have not been given the chance. I think this is most in line with the program's mission.

Thanks for the responses. I just told them some of the schools I applied to and then he asked if I had heard back (interview or accepted) to any. And I told them that I interviewed at one school and was waitlisted. Any other thoughts?

I wouldnt worry about it too much, Escesc. One of the requirements for applying to GEMS is that you be actively seeking admission to med school so an interview here and a waitlist/acceptance there is expected.

...on another note, damn, this waiting is getting excruciating. I REALLY had my mind set on hearing something next week but now that I know there may be a delay.................... time is just stretching. If anyone gets any timeline feedback, PLEASE post.
👍

^ Thanks again, yea, I was thinking the same thing b/c we all did apply to med schools.

Hopefully only ONE more week left until we find out!!!! And as mentioned above, if anyone knows an exact date, please let us know. I hope they start calling on the 18th like last year?

LMAO, Im thinking of how nice we are being to the people who will be reading through this post next year...reading through our 15 PAGES will definitely help them to pass the time better than we have been able to...HI FUTURE GEMS READERS/POSTERS!!

I agree with maxim3L, I wouldn't worry about it, because everyone applying to this program has to have applied somewhere, and I think the whole idea of applying is to get accepted.

I was not asked on the status of my application to medical school either, but I agree with Flownominal.

As with everyone, I am hoping to hear some good news in the coming weeks. 🙂:luck:

I honestly don't think so, but that is my guess. The faculties at GEMS Program have said that they will notify applicants by May 30, 2009 and so, it can be any time now. Keep the hopes us and for now, we can only wait and pray. 🙂:luck:

Good look Fly. I had forgotten about the "by May 30th" part.
