Hello,

Thanks for this great resource. I was hoping that people could post what they have heard from schools. For starters, I received a Purdue interview request, but nothing else. Any information you have would be great, especially regarding Tufts.

NOTE: Tufts has apparently sent out their first batch of letters today (Friday Jan 28)

Hi Vetsupporter1. Congrats on Purdue! So far I've received interview requests from Ohio State, Virginia, and Illinois and was waitlisted by Cornell earlier this month. I was also told by Tufts that they were sending out the first interview invites today. I believe that Michigan State is sending their's out either today or early next week. I also believe that Florida is sending their's around the second week of February and that UPenn hasn't started with their out-of-state interviews yet (though if anyone knows differently, please let me know).

I would recommend that you check out the about.com "Pre-Vet and Career" forum, there's lots of talk about this sort of thing (I actually just posted a similar message there under psu33 in the 'anyone heard anything yet' thread).

Good Luck with everything!

Andrew

Thanks for the redirection. I'll check it out. And congratulations to you.

Hello
My name is Gina and I am pretty new to this forum. I've been reading it for a few months but this is my first post. So far I've had interview requests from Purdue and Auburn, got rejected from Virginia, and LSU sent me a little card verifying some info. That's it so far. If anyone interviews at Purdue b4 Feb 25, please post how it went. It looks like its going to be an all day thing. Good Luck everyone!!

hi, i'm new to this forum. i was accepted to cornell out-of-state on christmas eve. i've withdrawn my other applications because cornell is my first choice. i'm so glad cornell makes their decisions so quickly!

Would those who applied be willing to give us the basic jist of their application? (GPA and school you took most of your classes, GRE, expierience)

mucho gracias. 😉

Hey verbal_kint. I like knowing everyone else's stats, so I don't mind sharing mine.
I'm an Animal Bioscience major (microbiology minor) at Penn State, which is where I've taken the majority of my credits, besides a semester in Australia (University of Sydney) and a couple summer classes. My cum. gpa is 3.53 i believe, my science is somewhere around 3.5, and my last 45 credits gpa is 3.7-3.8. My GRE score was 720Q 640V 5A.

In terms of experience I worked in a small animal hospital for two years during high school (2000 hours), as a surgery prep. aide at the Animal Medical Center in NYC (500 hours), I did an externship in large animal vet. med. at UPenn last summer (200 hours), and I've spent the last few semesters as a research assistant in an Immunology lab on campus (200 hours- more now though).
I'm a NJ resident, so I've applied to a whole bunch of schools (10 actually).
Are you applying now? If so, good luck to you, and I hope this helped.

Andrew

What a great Christmas present for you!

I just got a notification for an interview with Oklahoma State. I was hoping the interviews would be a week later so they would be during my Spring Break but at least I will only have to miss a couple of days of classes.

I'll be applying come this summer. I'm just trying to do everything I can before that. Thanks for the info and congrats!

Hi verbal knit. I've been accepted to Cornell (also heard on christmas eve) and have interviews at Penn and Tufts coming up (I withdrew all other applications after hearing from Cornell).
Some info on me, to give you an idea: I'm 32, which I've come to realize is an advantage for admissions - the schools like second career students. My undergrad (Columbia) GPA was around a 3.0, but I have a Masters in Public Health from Columbia (GPA ~3.8) and took all of the pre-reqs as a post-bacc at the Hunter College, which is a NY City University School (GPA ~ 3.7). GRE=1280. Experience: Whale Research center of New England (300 hours), school for field studies in marine mammal biology (1 semester), small veterinary private practive volunteer ~ 68 hours, summer volunteer at the animal medical center (360 hours), NY Zoological Society Wildlife Health center (~70 hours and still going). I've also been working in the field of public health advocacy and research for 10 years.

Hope this helps.

when did you hear from penn? i have been hovering over my mailbox every day and am wondering what their schedule is.
thanks!

hi NYCHILLA - - i was wondering why you left your tufts application in after you got into cornell - - would you go to tufts over cornell? and if so, why?

I got into Ohio State today 🙂 They pulled me aside after my interview and gave me the good news. I'm really excited, Ohio is one of my top three schools. I'm still an alternate at Cornell and have an interview at UPenn coming up, so I'll have to see what happens, but I can finally relax. Is anyone planning on going to Ohio next year?
Good luck to everyone,
Andrew

Hi Cynthia,

I have an interview with Minnesota this Saturday.

Andrew, congratulations on Ohio. That is such awesome news.

I did the Tufts pre-vet summmer program and really fell in love with the school. The faculty I met were really wonderful and supportive, the students were very happy with the program, and the new wildlife hospital was really spectacular. The school also attracts a larger percentage of older students - that's a quality of life issue for me 'cause I'm 32. I'm also a city girl - so I like being outside of Boston, but North Grafton kinda sucks.
I've heard mixed reviews of the case based curriculum at Cornell, although after attending their information weekend, I feel much better about it.
Financing my education is a huge concern of course, so the cost difference may end up being the deciding factor, but I'm keeping my options open right now. Tufts just gave me a good vibe when I was there - hard to describe, but it seemed like a very positive environment.

I finally heard from Florida yesterday...but my interview is on Easter weekend which really sucks. Do y'all think it would be rude or improper to request an earlier interview? I'd like to hear your thoughts!!

I just got my interview invite from Florida today (out-of-state and mailed to Pennsylvania if that helps) for March 26th. What's your opinion of the school? I would like to go for the interview, but it would be relatively expensive to go down there, so I want to learn a bit more about it before deciding to go.

Good luck,
Andrew

Congrats to you guys for getting your interviews to Florida. I will be stalking my mailbox now.

Andrew - you got into Ohio State, which was one of your top 3.....so I guess you just have to compare your feelings about Florida's program to Ohio's. I believe USNews ranks Florida as like #8 or 9 . . . if those rankings are relevent to you. I also heard Gainesville is a fun city to live in - a big college town.

Cynthia - I dont think its rude to request another interview date, but you may want to have a good reason in mind. Also, just in my experience, schools are not very flexible in switching dates around because they have limited numbers of interviewers and are trying to interview a lot of applicants at one time. But maybe if someone cancels, you could have their spot....

Thanks guys,
Darla

did you do the AVM program? i did it two years ago and was pretty impressed too. I am also a city kid - born and raised in manhattan and worked there as a lawyer until i started my post bac program -(cheaper to live with family up here, since i left my job to do the post-bac stuff) - and i am also in my 30's and i agree that tufts seems much more open to older students. I have good stats (4.0, good GRE's) but i am always called on to explain my choice to leave the law - - and i have encountered some prejudice because of being a lawyer - i am wondering if that is part of why i havent heard from penn yet. in any case, please keep me posted on your progress - it sounds like we have a lot in common!

Hey Darla. While it's true Ohio's in my top 3, I feel I can't shut the door on any of my other interviews just yet. I'm the type of person who bases a lot on the vibe I get from spending a day at a school, thus the importance of going to visit. So, as of right now I think I'm going to go to all of my interviews. Florida seems like the type of school that could win me over by visiting (nice weather, fun city, high quality program, etc...). I also want to check out their financial aid packages, which will turn out to be an important deciding factor later.

Thanks for your help,
Andrew

I will probably just stick to the date they gave me...which is the exact date they gave Andrew (Andrew--hope to see you there!) but it's just so expensive to fly that weekend (i'm living off of a vet. tech's salary plus a second job just to spend on this whole app. and interview process). I could drive (I'm in New Orleans which is about 9 hours away) but I'm concerned about being exhausted for my interview. Florida is my number one choice and I don't want to blow it. Oh well!

Andrew
I heard that Gainesville is a great place to live...being a college town and all that. While I'm there I might look at apartments. Are you going to stay with a current student? I think I might. I need to save money and I would love to be able to talk to someone going there now. Ok I'm rambling....I'm gonna go!

Cynthia,
I'm in NO too! Are you going to school there or are you a LA resident? Are you applying to LSU?

I work and go to school at Tulane (undergrad Loyola), and am applying to LSU and Wisconsin.

Good luck with your interviews!

I think it's a great idea to stay with a vet student. When I went to my Cornell info session I stayed in a house with 5 vet students and not only did I have fun, I was able to find a ton out about the school that I wouldn't have with just the tour/PR stuff. At the same time, realize that you might have to sleep on a couch/floor (not too comfortable, but doable). And of course it's free! (that's a big seller for me). The only time I wouldn't do it would be if you're just arriving in the town the night before your interview. In this case, you're going to be tired and will need to prepare for your interview (but that's just my opinion). I hope to see you in Florida! (I'm the 6'5'' guy with blonde/brown hair, kinda hard to miss!).

Andrew

Also Cynthia, did you realize that for the Class of 2007 (according to Florida's website) of the 24 out-of-staters who attended the intervew (47 invited) they accepted 23! I actually called up their admissions office to see if this was a fluke and was told that it wasn't. Now, I don't want to jinx anything, but as long as you answer your questions honestly and relax, I'd say you have a great shot of getting in.

Good luck,
Andrew

hey kelly
i went to Xavier and graduated in 2003 but i'm still living down here and working in an uptown clinic. on my vmcas app. i claimed wisconsin residency but i'm crossing my fingers that lsu considers me a resident since i've been down here for six years. and of course i applied to wisconsin. when do you think we will hear from them?

Have you heard from lsu yet? i just got the little card about my gpa and scores but i haven't heard anything else. one of the other techs i work with didn't get that little card until a week after i did but then she already got her interview. so hopefully i'm not on the bottom of the list.

Andrew
My heart dropped when i read your post! That does sound like a fluke, but i'm glad to hear those stats. I won't be heard to miss either...i'll send you a pic of me and my cat of you like.

Hey Cynthia. Here's the stats page for the Class of 2007 at Florida:
http://www.vetmed.ufl.edu/stsvcs/StatisticSheet2003.pdf

When I spoke with the associate dean he told me the reason they accept so many interviewees was because they realize that out-of-staters who receive interview invitations from Florida most likely have/will have additional acceptances. This is evidenced by the fact that for the Class of 2007, though they invited 23 non-residents, only 6 accepted. And, as stated in the interview invite letter, the portion of the process where they review your stats, etc... from your application is completed. Thus, "the purpose of the interview is to learn more about you and your communication skills"; so it seems pretty laid back.

Here's a neat link I found in another thread on sdn (you migh already have it). It has previous questions from the Florida interview.
http://grove.ufl.edu/~prevet/interviews.htm

Sure, I like to go to interviews knowing people, so a picture would be cool! When I was up at Cornell I found that most of the people I met I would be meeting again at other interviews (as has already happened at Ohio). I've found being able to talk to people you know while waiting for an interview is a great stress reliever (though when I get nervous I'll pretty much talk to anything/one that'll listen!).

Hope this helped in some way. Good luck to you again,
Andrew

I'm a fourth year at Florida...so if you have questions about the school or town let me know...

My girlfriend just heard from UF today (in-state) with an invite. She's pretty pumped as am I. 2 for 2 so far. The only things that is a little annoying is that she received her invite today and the interview is scheduled for March 5th... a week and a half away and two days after her tufts interview.

Any advice? Stories? Suggestions?

I'll post her experiences from the interview after she's had it.

Mack

Hi Cynthia,

There are a few Xavier grads in my program here at Tulane, although they're all set on med school! What clinic are you working at? My sister was taking her elderly white shepherd to Audubon for acupuncture with Dr. Pastor this past fall.

I just had my interview at LSU last Tuesday. I'm not sure if they're interviewing in one big group as they have in the past, or spreading it out a bit. BUT, I believe they are friendly to out-of-staters, so if you do fall into that category, don't worry! 😀

As for Wisconsin, haven't heard a peep! But I did read somewhere (not the foggiest idea where though!) that they will send out decisions in early March.

Best of luck in your interviews!! :luck: :luck:

I was under the impression that LSU only conducted resident interviews. . . .

Darla3 said:

That's quite possibly the case. Their website, etc. is rather minimum about the process, but different requirements for non-residents are not listed there. Interview is part of the subjective score, so I wonder how they would adjust the total applicant score, if they're not interviewing them.

I just went to an open house at LSU and the flyer they gave me has stats on last year's admitted students. Of 85 total, 9 were from Arkansas (I think they have an agreement with them), 4 were from Puerto Rico, and 16 were from other states. I don't know what constitutes "friendly" to out-of-staters, but that seems like a reasonable percentage.

Yes, it's Mandy!!! That's so cool! The acupuncture helped her tremendously in her last months. I was amazed to see such improvement in such a short time--"bedridden" to walking into the clinic in one week's time.

I'm in the Cell and Molecular Biology master's program at Tulane. It's a one-year, non-thesis, work-your-butt-off to get that boost-to-get-admitted program. 😀 I have a pretty significant research background already, so non-thesis was the way to go for me.

And Loyola was similar to Xavier in everybody pre-med! I know only three other people who even considered it!

That's great you have so many interviews! Now try not to stalk the mailbox. 😉

Hey all, I just got back from my Virginia interview. I believe it went very well, and I had a great time there. I was interviewed by a 'hot' team of four veterinarians who had access to my file and a 'cold' team of two veterinarians who did not. At least I thought they hadn't! After completing the 'cold' team interview, one of the interviewers mentioned that they had actually known a good deal about me before I came in. After asking how, I was asked what my email address was, was it psu something? At first I didn't understand, but then I realized that they were referring to the about.com forum! They had actually been reading my posts! LOL! I guess it didn't take much investigative work to decipher that I was the 6'5'' guy named Andrew interviewing at Virginia on Feb. 23rd 🙂. I'm just glad I've kept my posts positive (of course I had to skim over them to make sure). So, a word to the wise, this is a public forum, so realize that anyone could be reading your posts, including the admissions committees!

Andrew

(P.S. To Virginia Veterinarians- I think this will go down as my funniest/most interesting interview moment of the process!).

Okay, that's kind of freaky!! 😱
I've just seen many times how people can take things the wrong way, out of context, etc.,--that's certainly happened to me a number of times!--and I wouldn't want an admissions person reading something I post and then "tracking me down". It's just rather weird...

I find it interesting that the person in question actually proceeded interviewing you as a "cold" interviewer. Maybe he/she just did not make the connection until after, who knows.

Has anyone had their Purdue interview yet? Mine is tomorrow and I am sooo nervous!!

Hey, Lisa, sure! I like meeting up with people at interviews. My interview's at 1:30PM. I don't know anything about the school, so I don't know of any meeting places. But, as I've said in previous posts, I'm pretty easy to find (being a tall guy in a sea of lady applicants). And if anyone else is going to Illinois and wants to meet up, let me know.

To keep everyone up to date, I found out today that I was accepted at Virginia 🙂. I really liked the school, so time to start making some decisions!
