Hi Everyone,
I was wondering if any of you out there applied and interviewed at Western, the new vet school. I havent heard back yet, but I was wondering what you guys out there (including current vet students) think of their program and reputation. I actually loved their program when I interviewed, I am just worried about them since they are so new.
Thanks guys,
Bree

I am a second year student at Western. message me if you like with any questions. Right now is my short break for studying (midterms start tomorrow) so I can't say much now but will try to answer questions as I take other breaks.

Hey Bree,

I interviewed at Western and like you waiting for their answer. I believe they told everyone that they will send out their decisions in mid March.

I am actually very impressed with their program. At first, I was a bit iffy about it. I have gone to several informational sessions and the more I get to know what the program is like, the more it appears to be attractive. I'm a So Cal resident and so the lure of staying near family is there. But like you, I have some reservations. One thing I am sure about the school is that I like the faculty and students. So many helpful and genuine people.

hey. To everyone waiting to hear form Penn. I called them the other day for a friend of mine and they said that they are going to be sending out interview requests untill the 31st of March. So you may not find out till then. So then I asked "when are you going to be sending out rejections?" and she said "oh when we get around to it" so sorry for you all, but it looks like some of you may be in limbo for a bit. Good Luck to you all!!

Hey Andrew

Have you heard anything from Illinois yet? I remember them saying they would mail them the 3rd. I guess anyone who went let me know if you get something in the mail.

Good luck to all!

Hey Beauty2597, nope, nothing yet. Since I'm in Pennsylvania, I'm not expecting to get a letter until at least next Monday or Tuesday.

On another note, I just interviewed at UPenn yesterday. When did people who interviewed there usually hear back from them? Is it true that they call everyone they accept, or is that just a rumor?

Good luck to all,
Andrew

The people that I knew did receive a phone call that night- however there is one girl that I know who did not get one. I think it just depends...on what, I have no idea. But it is true that Penn does give phone calls, that isnt a rumor.

Hey Beauty2597, the alternate lists just keep on coming! I found out today that I'm #2 on the alternate list at Iowa and was also waitlisted at Illinois. All told that's alternate lists at Cornell, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Iowa! If nothing else this has cemented my belief that there's just no understanding the admissions process.
Good luck to you (and everyone else of course) and be sure to let us know how everything goes.

hi Andrew - - you seem to have applied to a lot of schools and i was wondering if you had applied to Tufts or Ohio - - and if not, why not? also, are you an undergrad or a non-traditional student? and finally, how was your penn interview?
thanks AND GOOD LUCK!!!!

Hey Julia, yup, I applied to both Ohio and Tufts. I've actually been accepted by Ohio and Virginia, and just had my Tufts interview last Wednesday. How did you like Tufts at your interview? I felt the place had a good vibe and I had a fun interview, so we'll see about that one. I had a great UPenn interview, very laid back, but haven't heard back from them yet.

I'm a traditional applicant (senior-undergraduate), and I def. applied to a bunch of schools (10) as my state doesn't have a vet school.

To sum up, as of right now I've got the two acceptances, four alternate spots (of which I'm only going to hold on to Cornell), one rejection (Michigan), an upcoming interview at Florida, and Tufts and UPenn w/decisions pending. I'll keep everyone posted as I hear back from schools/start making decisions.

Good luck!
Andrew

When did you hear from Illinois? I am still waiting on a reply from them

I heard back from them yesterday (Monday). The letter was mailed to my school address in Pennsylvania if that helps.
Good Luck!

Guess I'll put my 2cents in here. Interviewed at Michigan State, and recieved admission notification on Monday!

Thanks for the update Andrew... As of wednesday I am still waiting to hear from them here in Ohio. I am hoping today (Thurs) will bring the letter! They are my #1 choice, so I am anxious.

Nate,

Congrats on MI... I bet it feels great to be accepted!

it does feel good getting accepted. i got into wisconsin and auburn but i'm still waiting on purdue and tuskegee. and i'm like last on the waiting list at iowa...jerks. anyway i've given up on UPenn. it's almost mid march and i still haven't heard anything. i've also got my florida interview too at the end of the month. when i finally decide where to go, i'll probably be blowing up this message board on how to study for vet school classes. i've been out of school for two years and i feel like my mind might be rusty when i start. okay i'm rambling again...bye!

Cynthia, I also took 2 years off before vet school. It was fantastic. 🙂 I'm sure you will get back in to the swing of things easily, don't worry! Definitely ENJOY the time you have before vet school because once you are here, you have little or no time for anything else.

thanks for the support coffee. how did you get back in the swing of studying after two years? i'm sooo worried about that. i'm trying to enjoy my last few months of youth and freedom but it's hard b/c i have two jobs. i got my second job so i can afford to move to wherever. i would love any advice!

I worked until the 2nd week of August for the extra cash and for health insurance reasons (so I'd be covered until student insurance kicked in). Then I had a little over a week to visit with friends, pack all my stuff, and a week in Champaign before classes started to unpack and settle in. Give yourself enough time to be destressed when you start classes. 🙂 Some people moved in the day before classes started, and they were a little crazed.

The hardest for me was anatomy, because I only once had a practical exam and never any anatomy. The terminology is the trickiest to figure out initially, then things will start falling in place. I looked over an anatomy text before starting so I was familiar with some terms (cranial, caudal, dorsal, ventral, etc.) before beginning. It would have helped to also know descriptive terms like tubercle, fossa, etc. If you want a latin list, I have one I can e-mail you. But don't review too much. 🙂

The fear of falling behind will probably keep you motivated... it did for me! If you can set aside a couple hours each night to go over what was covered and use the weekends to catch up with stuff you didn't get to, then you'll be fine. Of course I still end up cramming for exams (it's simply amazing how much I learn the night before the exam!) but being aware of what subjects are my weak points and what books are helpful to read (sometimes books not assigned are better, talk to *many* upperclassmen and find out what worked for them), as well as having old exams to see what the professor thinks is important will help a lot. A lot of people study in groups, too... don't be afraid to bounce around to different groups to find someone you are compatible with.

Your brain will figure it out. 🙂 And remember... if you keep throwing **** against the wall, some of it is bound to stick!

Hey Andrew,

So, what ever happened with Penn? I was first put on hold at Penn, then I just got a letter saying I'm an alternate. I wasn't thrilled with Penn. The woman who gave us our tour had the enthusiasm of a slug. Every time someone asked about extra-curricular activities, she'd respond by saying, "you won't have time to do this or that". I tried not to put too much weight on the vibe I got from 1 student, but the more students from Penn I talk to, the more I feel like the quality of life isn't great. I expect school to be challenging, but I'd like to know that the school has a supportive and positive learning environment.

Anyway, I had a bad feeling while I was there - and it affected my interview. It was pretty bad - I mean the questions were very fair, although from what I heard it was much less laid back than what other people experienced - I just didn't respond well. I think, subconsciously, I had already decided not to go there before the interview began. I'm taking my name off the alternate list.

Have you heard any news from Cornell?

-Allison
