Hi
@Goro and everyone else,
I’ve been rebuilding my academic record after a very rough period early in undergrad, including a semester of straight Fs. Altogether, I have
6 Fs and 8 Ws, but since starting my upward trend I have had
zero Fs or Ws. I am still in undergrad, and I’ve been working on a long reinvention from within my degree.
I will take full responsibility for my early grades, I’m not making excuses, but to give honest context, I lost
four family members during COVID, and I also
contracted long COVID, which severely affected my focus, energy, and academic ability. On top of that, I had poor study habits at the time. I’ve since rebuilt all of that through discipline, structure, and consistency, and my current performance reflects that growth.
Background
•

•
First-generation immigrant
•
Texas resident
•
Nontraditional path
•
U.S. Army Combat Medic — 14 years
• ~20,000 clinical hours
• Two deployments

Reinvention
Over the last several semesters, I have earned
straight As (4.0) in all of my science and upper-division courses. This includes
all the prerequisites, which I completed during my upward trend. With a couple P grades (physics 2/statistics) during covid. I still havent completed Bio 2.
I currently have
80+ credits of 4.0 work before cycle.
Prereqs completed with As during reinvention all first attempt except gen chem 1 which I eventually became a TA for:
• Biology I w/ lab (4 credits)
• Chemistry I & II w/ lab (8 credits)
• Organic Chemistry I & II w/ lab (10 credits)
• Physics I w/ lab (4 credits) (first attempt previous school considered my survey of physics for physics 2)
• Biochemistry (3 credits)
• Genetics w/lab (4 credits)
• Virology (2 credits)
Clinical Experience
•
~20,000 hours as a U.S. Army Combat Medic
• 24-hour on-call deployments
• Line medic and senior medic roles
• Leadership as NCO
• Current hospital volunteering (Hem/Onc)
Non-Clinical Volunteering
• ~350 hours at food banks and community orgs
Shadowing
• 60 hours now
• Continuously adding hours
Teaching
• ~240 hours as a General Chemistry TA + 80 Combat Life Save Course
MCAT
I
do not have an MCAT score yet, but I begin dedicated prep in Dec. and plan to
take the MCAT this May.
My Question for Goro
Given:
• 6 Fs and 8 Ws early in undergrad
• Zero since starting my trend
• A long, sustained
4.0 upward trend with 80+ credits of As
• All prereqs completed with As
• Still in undergrad (not a post-bacc)
• URM + Texas resident
• Strong clinical background (20,000 medic hours)
• Solid volunteering, shadowing, and TA experience
• MCAT planned for May
• Clear explanation and accountability for early academic struggles
Have I academically reinvented myself enough to move forward toward the MCAT and application cycle, or do I still need more upper-division science coursework before applying?
