GPA's, GRE's, XTRA's, ACCEPTANCES

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congrats on all those acceptances! That's awesome. Looks like you had a great application cycle. I applied to a lot of the same schools and have a couple questions if you don't mind my asking... When did you apply to Azusa Pacific and was it for Feb 2014 or 2015? Also, when did you interview/decline the offers at WesternU and Chapman?
Thanks! yeah so the dates were: Azuza for feb 2014 (I think, I submitted my app in aug. 2013), I interviewed at Western on 12/17/13 and declined both Western and Chapman about three weeks ago

Long time lurker. Think I'll start to post my stats as I will be applying this next cycle. I will be taking some prereqs over the next year. Good luck to everyone

I am sort of new to this forum and field. However, I've recently became interested in PT. I have a 3.3 in a BS and a 3.4 in a MS. My GRE is 144V, 146Q, 3.5 Writing. I was just wondering if you think I should retake the GRE to apply to some schools, because I know some schools do not even require the GRE if you have a Masters. Also, I feel I could give the GRE maximum effort to improve my score if it would increase my chances in being accepted in to a better program.

I think I'm in a similar situation as you are. Like you said it depends on if the schools you apply to require it or not. For one of mine they don't but for the others they do. If you find that none of the schools you are interested in actually require it based on your grad degree I would consider not retaking it simply because of the cost! If you do need to retake it I had good improvement using the Manhattan Prep Quant books and Manhattan Verbal Flash Cards and the ETS published book.

Check on the PTCAS website the average GRE scores of the schools you are applying to. At my top choice school, incoming student scores average about 153 Q and V and 3.9 writing. If you see your program asking for something much higher than what you scored and you have the time and energy by all means you should study and take it again. Your scores right now are below the 50% - I would shoot for at least meeting that benchmark. If they are that much lower than the average scores and your program weights them in a significant way you are actively hurting your chances of being accepted.

Thanks for the response, ya'll. I think I'm going to give the GRE another go. Any recommedations on studying from a certain source besides Manhattan Prep and the ETS published book? Also, I feel I learn better if I take practice tests, so if you know of a website that offers practice tests that would be a big help. Thanks again.

You can take two for free using the powerprep software. It's pretty good imo.

I thought Kaplan was the most helpful due to all of their computer-based practice sections and tests. I studied for two weeks and did really well!

I second that. I studied for approximately 3.5 weeks just doing the practice tests, and carefully reviewing my mistakes on each of the sections, and ended up doing well on the actual exam. It was funny, the actual exam seemed easier to me than the practice tests I was taking.

Make sure you spend a lot of time reviewing your practice though. Seriously, even questions you got correct, know why you got them correct and why the other choices are wrong. If you can't do this, you don't know the material well enough.

Best of luck!

I was very upset to find out that A.T. Still had sent me an email to complete the supplemental application but I never received it 🙁 It must have been filtered as spam. By the time I checked in with them, all the spots had been filled and my application was closed.
So sad - Colorado was my top choice. I did feel like I completely blew it in my interviews, though...

Finally the waiting is over and I am over the moon to be accepted in my first cycle! I feel that residency status is weighing more heavily than ever due to the increasing level of competition. I think it's something future applicants keep in mind.
Also, I'm a non-trad student - my first career was in the beauty industry. I definitely talked up how my previous career/experience will help me become a great PT, and I really stressed being able to communicate and build relationships with clients/coworkers/superiors etc. during my interview at NAU.

has anyone gotten off the wait list at NYIT? (if so what number were you on the wait list?) thats like my only hope for school and that one starts in May so I'm getting super nervous as each day goes by..

Genisis, how did you get rejected from UW with stats like that!?
I've heard they've become very stringent about accepting out of state students due to backlash from Washington residents. I hope that's the case, anyway, b/c UW was one of my top 2 schools 🙁 I LOVE the amount of neuro and prosthetics curriculum and research opportunities they provide.

I have lurked on this thread long before I even applied to PT school. It helped me so much with the process. I am one of those people with low stats and I wanted to share my info in hopes that it will encourage someone who has a passion for PT and is willing to work their butt off to get into PT school. If you really want it, you will work for it!
My freshman and sophomore years sucked, but I got my act together and made up in my mind that I would get into PT school. Today, I received my acceptance into my first choice school! God is so good. 🙂

Tip to those applying in future years, don't decline interviews! I am so glad I went to each one because I learned so much that I could never have know from searching the programs online. My rankings of the schools I really wanted changed drastically after interviews and yours might too, so don't waste the opportunity to let the school sell themselves. (p.s. I only declined UK because even their first round interviews are held very late in the admissions cycle and I had already signed a lease for an apartment in Athens, if they were sooner in the cycle I would have gone)

I've been lurking these forums, gleaning advice and comparing stats while obsessing over my PT applications for well over a year now, and wanted to add to the pool now that the process is over. Like so many others, I was told from the beginning how competitive entrance into a PT program is, and operated on the assumption that every school would receive 1000+ applications, and ultimately choose 30-60 from that pool. This caused me a lot of stress that my 'stats' weren't competitive. Because of this, I wanted to contribute my 'story' to show to others, that it can be done; to be confident, and make your choices carefully.

Ultimately, I believe that having a clear understanding of who I am, why I feel PT is my calling, and having my admissions essays proofread and corrected by several of my professors, advisors, and human resources professionals helped get me invited to interviews. My confidence gained through much practice at interviewing and 'selling myself' got me invited to both schools I chose to interview at. I was fully prepared to attend all of the above listed interviews had I not been accepted to the two I did interview with.
For anyone that feels that your grades and GRE are not 'stand-out' good, as mine aren't; take heart. Do your best academically and practice to present your best qualities well, and schools will take you seriously.

Your pre req gpa is pretty high. a lot of schools in CA look at your best gre score. I suggest you take them again, I did way better the second time around. Try to get at least 150 in each section

I was looking at UNM as well. As an out of state student, it looks very bleak.

I hope this post inspires those who applied (or will be applying) that are non-traditional and do not come from an extensive science educational background/major. It's safe to say that I've been through quite a lot, but I'm only 22 years old. I graduated from college in May 2013, majored in business, worked in the business field for a bit via multiple jobs, ended up becoming a professional electric violinist through being discovered on a talent show, made good money playing gigs and touring around the world, had a switch of heart and decided that I wanted to pursue a career in healthcare because I love helping people (i know..cliche...dont judge me), wanted to find stability in my career decision so that I can provide for my future family/spouse/kids when I'm older, busted my butt to finish all my pre-reqs within one year via overloading a crap ton of core classes (goodbye social life), and now I'm finally accepted into the school of my dreams.

I have both ADHD and dyslexia, so for those questioning why my GRE scores aren't anything to boast about... well.. you're right lol. Standardized testing was a (insert harsh expletive here ->_______). But stats don't mean everything! I didn't think I'd have a chance in hell to be accepted into these schools and I had no idea where I would stand in terms of how admissions would view someone like me to be honest.

However, I truly believe that my personal statement & supplemental essays made the biggest difference in getting my foot in the door when it came down to interviews and acceptances. That's your ticket in regards to letting admissions know who exactly you are in comparison to others and once you get that across, the rest is easy because if you're truly selling yourself the right way, then the genuine aspects of you will shine through 🙂 We've all faced hardships - whether it be in classes, grades, or just life in general, but we can find comfort in knowing that hard work WILL pay off in the end. It's just a matter of time 🙂 Good luck to all!

still hoping to get off the waitlist at Jefferson or Drexel...seems like I'm asking for too much though haha! Hopefully my declines will give someone a better chance that they'll get off some wait lists though. Good luck everyone...the cycle is almost done! The anxiety-ridden waiting game should be ending soon...!!

Did you interview at Jefferson?

I did last friday, the 14th. I wonder why they waitlisted you without an interview? maybe they don't interview everyone hmm
I was wondering the same thing. So I'm most likely below the people who were interviewed, then waitlisted. haha! Like I said, not high hopes on that one! 🙄

As embarrassing as my stats are, I wanted to post them so that those with low stats can see that anything is possible!

Observation experiences: 100+ hours including: outpatient sports therapy, pediatric outpatient, geriatric inpatient

Applying: Tons of schools... trust me (note the GPA 🙁 )

Interviews: Georgia Regents University (11/15)
Rejected: Also way more than I'd care to share, but I knew that when I threw a wide net
Alternate List: Southwest Baptist University
Waitlist: Mount St. Mary's
Still waiting to hear from: AT Still, Hampton, OU, NYMC, Wingate
Accepted: Georgia Regents University 😀:happy::soexcited:
Attending: Absolutely thrilled to be accepted to any program, let alone GRU... even if I am accepted to any of my remaining choices, I feel very confident that I will attend GRU, but you never know...

After getting involved in this forum, it sank in that the competition out there is incredibly tough. By January, I had resigned myself to applying next cycle. I feel so blessed to have gotten into a PT program, and I can't wait to chase my dream. Best of luck to everyone! Don't give up hope!

CONGRATULATIONS! Like others, I've followed your journey on this forum for quite some time. I was pulling for you to get in somewhere this cycle and I'm glad you finally got to hear/read those words that you've been accepted. A well deserved acceptance, congratulations again!

Wow thank you HeatherDPT and OneWarrior! I am sooo excited and totally in shock. I was on the waitlist for GRU starting in November (position 21). By January I had moved to #4. Then after their January interview I moved back down to #12. The admissions lady at that point said that I was "living on a dream" because they had all spots filled with deposits paid. Then, last week I got a call from the chair saying I was likely to be accepted as there were a number of out of state students considering schools closer to home. Sure enough, last Friday I woke up to an email from the chair saying that I was in! I am beyond thrilled and can't wait to start this new path! This forum has been so helpful to me and I am totally overwhelmed by the talent of those entering this incredible field.
