Wow thank you HeatherDPT and OneWarrior! I am sooo excited and totally in shock. I was on the waitlist for GRU starting in November (position 21). By January I had moved to #4. Then after their January interview I moved back down to #12. The admissions lady at that point said that I was "living on a dream" because they had all spots filled with deposits paid. Then, last week I got a call from the chair saying I was likely to be accepted as there were a number of out of state students considering schools closer to home. Sure enough, last Friday I woke up to an email from the chair saying that I was in! I am beyond thrilled and can't wait to start this new path! This forum has been so helpful to me and I am totally overwhelmed by the talent of those entering this incredible field.

What the heck - how did you move down to #12 on the wait list? I'm just glad you got in 🙂

Yeah me too! It was a bummer because I was so close, but I knew that January interview would probably bump me back down... and it did haha. But I also assumed those people probably applied later, meaning that it wasn't high on their list, so I had a little bit of hope. And it ended up working out! Still can't believe it 🙂

Hey all,
Im not a DPT student yet, Im not even a student yet, but I know PT is what I want to do. Im getting out of the military in the next month, and will start school this summer. All I've been doing for the last 6 months is researching DPT schools and noting pre-reqs and things like that. Im from SoCal, so would like to stay in Ca, but it's not that big of deal for me. It would be nice from a financial standpoint though. I guess my question is:
Why would anyone choose SDSU for a DPT program if its not even accredited? What happens if you graduate and it doesn't gain full accreditation? Or if you grad before it is accredited, does your diploma become accepted at that point? It just seems a little risky to be paying all that money for a program that is not even legitimate yet. Anyone on here going to SDSU currently? What made you choose there? Ive still got 4 years until I can even apply, so hopefully it will be fully accredited by then...

Hi CA,

A school cannot be accredited until their first class graduates, which means that there will actually be two other classes (and a new incoming class) when a school finally does receive accreditation. That being said, I've never heard of a DPT program NOT becoming accredited. If you aren't applying for four years, you can all but guarantee that program will become accredited before you even apply 🙂

And for future reference, try and pay attention to the titles of forum posts and make sure you're posting in the most appropriate threads. Utilize the search feature too - it'll save you time in the future 🙂

Ok thanks. I thought I did post appropriately. I read through like 20 pages on this thread, and I noticed a lot of people listing SDSU as a school they applied for, so I thought it made sense to post here.... Thanks again.

For my application I took a med school approach which is to apply all over the US, especially since California programs are very difficult to get in to (didn't get into a single Cali school.) I also applied to a very large number of schools, much larger than the average due to my lower GPA. I would rather spend the money than go through the anxiety and time of reapplication. One of my biggest mistakes was applying deadline by deadline, as opposed to applying early for all programs. As a non traditional applicant, my prerequisite GPA is more important than my cumulative, but my cumulative GPA still held me back at many schools. One thing that helped me were my essays which I feel were very well crafted and my excellent interviewing abilities (except the interviews at miami and emory). I was very worried throughout the cycle and the results have been much better than I have anticipated. I also wish I had known about SDN before I applied.

Final update: results from chapman and CSULB. Didn't get into a single Cali school but that's ok. Godspeed you! low gpa, Cali applicants.

I took a roundabout way of getting to PT. I went to medical school for a few months, and left since I felt that it wasn't right for me. Since getting back in October 2013, I worked towards getting all my prereqs for PT school (just observation hours thankfully.) Got an acceptance last week and will be attending!

I am planning on applying this coming year (2014 application). My Gre is: V 166, Q 156, W 3.5. My undergrad Degree was Psychology with a certificate in Neuroscience and a minor in biology, GPA 3.75. I am taking prerequisite courses now (a&P 1&2, Chem 2, physics 1&2) at a community college and am getting A's so far (Science GPA will probably end up anywhere from 3.7-4.0). I have worked full time for a year as a rehab tech in sports ortho outpatient at a top ten hospital, and in addition to the couple thousand hours from work I am planning on about 20 inpatient hours with children, 20 with adults, maybe a few geriatric hours if I can find the time. I am planning on applying to IUPUI, U of Indy, Mt St. Joseph, UIC, Northwestern, Rosalind Franklin U, Toledo, and Bellarmine, I am concerned about my writing score and the fact that almost all science pre-reqs will be from a community college. After going through the process yourselves, what do you think my chances are?

@lmck2790, unless the schools require a 4 on the writing portion, you will get in no problem.

Completing your science pre reqs at a JC will be no problem. It is very common and most schools could care less where you did you UG courses in general

Thanks for your replies! It is hard to find solid data on how schools weigh the gre (IUPUI, for example, only looks at the verbal portion). I know some schools may have strict cut offs and won't even consider you if you don't reach the minumum score, but I am hoping that my net is cast wide enough and my V/Q scores are high enough to earn me some points towards admission. Northwestern is the only program that has specifically stated they "strongly" urge your prereqs to be taken at a 4 year school, but I am mostly applying there as a reach school. Any other advice for making my application as strong as possible?

You have great stats, do your best to get A's on the rest of your pre reqs and you will get plenty of interviews. The majority of schools do not mind students taking pre-reqs at county schools, so I would not worry about that at all. If you do some searching around here a ton of us have gotten in taking pre-reqs at community colleges and recieved multiple acceptances. As long as you did your research on the GRE requirements at the schools you are applying to, and they do not "strongly suggest" or "require" 4.0 or higher on the writing portion then you should be set. Apply early, have multiple people proofread your PS, and get your LOR's in on time.. good luck!

You know, I don't really know what to say. I'm speechless and thrilled that I was accepted off the waiting list at Arcadia University. This was my second application cycle and it was looking very grim for me. I was started to consider if I should reapply for a third time or just give it up altogether and find a new career. I knew my GPA was awful during my undergraduate years and I tried hard to get good grades for retakes. I still went into the application cycle with a C in chemistry, C in biology, and C in physiology (quarter system courses). I did get an interview for Samuel Merritt, which is in California (where I live), but I panicked on the interview and got flustered over some of the questions and was ultimately declined. I'm very thankful that I am attending a DPT program at all. For everyone with a really, really low GPA, there's hope!

I'm another one of those non-traditionals. I am very happy with my results. I didn't think I stood a snowball's chance in you know where of getting in with my undergrad GPA. My wife is finishing medical school and will begin her residency this fall. We had to strategically pick cities with a high number of OB/GYN residencies and PT programs, so most of our choices were out East. We also applied to the Pacific NW due to family and are very excited to be heading back out there. Had to go back and get pretty much take all my prereqs because they were either too old or a low grade. Also due to how widely I applied I pretty much had to take every prereq under the sun. It was very frustrating to have to deal with so many different requirements, such as prereqs, # of prereqs that could be outstanding at application time, GRE, # of LOR, # of observation hours and settings. It would be nice if there was a bit more consistency between the programs. Seven of the schools I applied to were not on PTCAS which was a pain for me and my LOR writers.

I am excited to get started this fall. I am also very glad that UPS doesn't start until September. Some of the schools I was accepted to or was on the wait list for started within a week or less of finishing my upcoming finals.

I'm glad its just a waiting game now, this was a frustrating process. I had a poor first 2 years in undergrad, and have spent an additional 2 years after graduating taking pre-reqs and retaking courses to atone for my GPA from my first 4 semesters. My post bac GPA is a 4.0 for 24 credits, and my Last 60 GPA is something like a 3.8. I've noticed that I am much less competitive for many of the schools that just take my PTCAS pre-req GPA than for the schools that calculate their own pre-req GPA. I called a few schools that do their own calculations for this and my pre-req is usually between a 3.4-3.7, which I hope will give me a shot. I took my time on each of the essays, and will be doing some more inpatient observation hours to get more variety in there. I'm also debating whether to add 2 developing programs (Wingate, George Fox) to the list to boost my chances. I'll update as I hear back. Any feedback or speculation on my stats is welcome.

I have very similar GPA stats as you. I am currently finishing up my undergrad, and will be taking Biology II in the summer (to get an A to boost my prereq GPA) and then will probably retake two more science classes in the fall to boost my GPA even more. Out of the schools you listed above, which ones did you get acceptances/waitlists/rejections from? Also, which of those schools calculate their own GPA versus just looking at the PTCAS GPA? Any information would be very helpful for me! Thanks 🙂

I updated my status with a new post above. Even with my low stats I was still accepted to 4 schools! But Wingate was the only one of my acceptances I wasn't originally waitlisted for. I believe all Wingate, Bellarmine, RMUoHP, and Touro NV all calculate their own pre-req GPA but use the PTCAS for cumulative. Pacific had 3 GPAs that they calculated. Midwestern and AT Still both seem a little easier to get in to but they both only use PTCAS calculations; the reason I got an interview at one but not the other was probably how early I applied. Both AZ schools are rolling admissions, and I got my app in early for Midwestern but didn't have all my stuff complete for AT Still until December, so was declined because they filled their waitlist before even getting to my application.

My advice is:
1. **Look for schools that calculate their own pre-req GPAs** This is more important than I think many have stressed for applicants with lower stats. You can find this information on PTCAS and program websites (always check with the school b/c in at least 2 cases for my schools the PTCAS information was actually wrong)
2. For Rolling Admissions programs, Apply Early. Get them in as soon as possible to maximize your chances.
3. Look for schools that also use last 60 credits for their GPAs, except for U of Utah, and maybe Pacific, the places I applied to did not, but I saw others that did.

I just took the GRE for the second time and my scores went up but not as high as I wanted them to. I got a 151 verbal 150 quant which according to the ets website is a 49% and a 41% respectively. Do you guys recommend I get a tutor and take it again? Maybe i'm just gonna do well on this test because I took two kaplan courses prior to today's test and studied a lot.

Really depends on the schools requirements...Some schools don't even require the GRE. As for scores I got a 149V -150Q and was accepted to two programs and waitlisted at another, while receiving multiple interview invites. Hope this helps!

I'm at the top of the waitlist for UK. Their accepted students were supposed to return a yes/no form by March 31st, but they told me they don't contact alternates until they hear an explicit no from an accepted student (as opposed to a non-response). It's been like 3 weeks now and they told me they still haven't had anyone drop from the Lexington campus, but have contacted 3 alternates from the Hazard campus. I'm getting pretty nervous because it's been so long and I want to go there far more than my second choice. Then again, I have no idea how long this process usually takes. Does anyone have any advice?

Do your best and stay close to your faith. It's not over until God says it's over. Getting accepted into my first choice school is unbelievable. I missed out on many parties and Family gatherings but my true friends stay and my family understands. Good luck to everyone and make sure you research Vision 2020 for your interviews. And stay active in the PT community. Stay hungry stay humble.

Love this! Congratulations! After I got accepted to PT school I had a bracelet made with Philippians 4:13 inscribed on it... Congrats again! Excited for you!

If you don't mind me asking, what were your stats for UNT specifically? Like the last 60 hrs and prereq? UNT is my first choice and I'll be going to visit tomorrow, so any information would help. Thank you!!

im not sure specifically but my last 6o was around a 3.5 and my prereq is a 3.58.
Sorry for the late post! But if you have a low GPA make sure you have a lot of volunteer hours in different settings. Also make sure you are in a good amount of extra curricular activities!

Yet another unusual applicant. I have my lower stats, but a steady incline during the last 2 years. I also studied my face off for the GRE, and I am happy that I did. My situation is also interesting because I was applying with my husband (he's doing dental), which is TERRIBLE AND NO ONE SHOULD DO. It was incredibly stressful, and for a while we thought that we would have to live in different expensive cities. Luckily, the wait list at LIU moved enough that we will be both attending school in NYC!

I think that it is worth noting that the admissions people that I have chatted with have been wonderful, most notably at AT Still and GRU. I told them about my situation, and they were gracious enough to be patient and work with me.

To those that haven't been accepted, keep your head up! I got wait listed at OU in the top half, and I became really discouraged. I got a call within a week that I had been accepted! That was my top school by far, and it still seems unreal! Keep trusting in God and believing that He will take care of all of your needs. Do your part and He will do His.

Good luck!

OH MAN! This gives me hope. My scores are identical to yours too! And USA is my first choice. Thanks for the shinning a little light in my life. May I asked if you did anything else like talking to their advisor for tips?

That was the goal im glad it helped give u some hope! And no i didnt, i just concentrated on making my essays as unique and true to heart as possible and to show that its my first choice. Then at the interview you gotta show that ur very enthusiatic and excited about going there, dont just go through the motions and answer their questions, show some humor , show good body language. Hope that helps

When did you apply for azusa?

Pegasus,

Your stats are almost perfect. If you don't mind, what do you think went wrong at U Montana?
I know this is from a LONG time ago, but I'll answer....When I went for the interview, they had a whole day of informational stuff going on for all the candidates. I asked beforehand if it was ok to bring my wife and child (then less than a year old) to these presentations, since my wife wanted to know all about my prospective grad school as well as I did. They said yes, but even though she hardly made a peep, they may not have liked that I brought her. To be clear, she wasn't with me in the interview, just the group "seminars" I suppose you would call them. Second, it was during one of these presentations that we learned about their rules for determining in-state residency. You have to move into the state and go twelve months taking no more than 6 credits before you can qualify, no exceptions. As most people here know, that's an impossibility in most graduate programs, so we would have been messed over and forced to pay out-of-state tuition for the entire program. Our decision on whether we would go there if accepted was made right then and there, and even though we were polite, I think they may have known we weren't impressed and sent us a rejection rather than waste everyone's time. As you can imagine, we weren't particularly broken up about it.

After a long and draining process, I have finally been accepted. My advice to people applying in the future is to make sure that ALL parts of your application are as strong as can be, especially if your GPA is on the lower end, otherwise it will be very difficult to get interviews. I believe that mainly my essays are what gave me a chance. Thanks SDN for getting me through this stressful time in my life. Oh, and just when you think it's over, and that all hope is gone, you will get that email or phone call when you least expect it.

I have lurked on this thread long before I even applied to PT school. It helped me so much with the process. I am one of those people with low stats and I wanted to share my info in hopes that it will encourage someone who has a passion for PT and is willing to work their butt off to get into PT school. If you really want it, you will work for it!
My freshman and sophomore years sucked, but I got my act together and made up in my mind that I would get into PT school. Today, I received my acceptance into my first choice school! God is so good. 🙂

Hello! I just had some questions about UTEP's DPT program! My husband has orders to PCS to Fort Bliss this September, so that ruined my plans to apply to the DPT program in TN. So looks like UTEP is close to the base and I am so eager to apply. I get my bachelors this December. So what is the difference in applying through EMBARK (never heard of it) and applying through PTCAS? Should I go ahead and start an EMBARK application as to start next year if accepted?? Do they do interviews and when as I will not actually be down there till the end of this year. What are the statistics on GPA and GRE scores? was there an interview? how hard was it to get in? Right now I have a 3.2 prerequ and 3.6 overall. Much of my extracurricular involved things outside of campus life since I am a military wife and grew up around horses/vets/animals etc.. I have right now close to 60 observation hours (4 acute inpatient rehab, some from a skilled nursing/pt at nursing home, and most from outpatient). I am wandering if I should apply this year since I wont get my bachelors till December nor live down there till august. I also think I need to take a upper division physiology class!!! that wasn't required in the Tennessee/Kentucky area PT schools, but hey everywhere is different I guess...

Let me start off with saying that this thread has given me more information than any other website or admissions office. I am extremely grateful for this website and this specific thread.

I am near to completing my BS in Kinesiology - Exercise Science. I still must take Microbiology and one last Kin class this summer. I am sure that I will get an A in both classes, as I know the teachers of both classes. Thus, I will be applying this Fall 2014 in order to attend during Fall 2015. I have done loads of researching on PTCAS, but there is not a place to just ask people in a similar situation what they think. I really want to hear what anybody has to say whether good or bad.

My current cGPA is a 3.37, pre-reqGPA is 3.3-3.4, but in the last 2 years (4 semesters)
I have had an average of 3.75 making the Dean's List each of those 4 semesters. I still have two classes, so that would bump me up around 3.4-3.5 range with both cumulative and pre-req GPA. Also, I have 1,000 Aquatic Outpatient hours. 200 land Outpatient hours. 48 home health. 40 Inpatient. ~100 as a camp counselor for an Muscular Dystrophy camp. And I will be getting about 40 hours at a Cerebral Palsy camp this summer. Finally, my letters of rec will also be from two PTs who have been in the field 30+ years. I have yet to take the GRE, but I have been studying.

I think that I have a shot at getting into PT school. I really don't know where to apply, or which programs are climbing for the top. Honestly, I will go anywhere that says Yes. No PT school will go out and say that they are bottom tier, but your opinions mean a lot to me and I would really love to hear more of your experiences.

You have a really good shot! My cGPA is a 3.52 and pre-req GPA is around a 3.8ish and I am like you, I don't care where I apply, as long as I get accepted. I am from Florida but all my school I am applying to are all over the US. More so, you are absolutely correct, this site has given me so much advice on how to tackle specific issues and gives me a heads up on what to expect from schools such as interviews or admission statistics. Good luck to you!

I'm extremely thankful as well for the SDN forums! It'll definitely be one of the most important tools that I'll be using as I begin the application process this Fall to get into a program Fall of 2015. It's good to hear from people that are in the same boat as you. 🙂

I'm coming from a non-science background and have been working on prerequisites at community colleges for about 2.5 years now. I got a double B.A. in History and International Studies--Political Science, then decided to flip the switch and pursue physical therapy. My cGPA was 3.74, and as of now (still have 3-4 more classes to take), my pGPA is 4.0. I'm hoping that taking classes from community colleges will not be a big disadvantage for me (not sure if anyone knows if this might be the case?)

I took the GREs twice and between the two tests, my highest scores were: V:159, Q: 157; AW: 4.5

Experience-wise, I'm slowly building up the hours. So far, I have about 300 hours of outpatient PT experience, 70 of which is at a hospital's outpatient physical therapy clinic setting at a cancer center. I'm having trouble finding opportunities in inpatient settings. The main reason I started volunteering at the hospital was to hopefully get some inpatient experience, but seems like it is completely full and the wait-list to volunteer is at least half a year. Anyone have good ideas about gaining more inpatient experiences?

I'd love any feedback from anyone that has applied/ is applying to see if there is anything I can do to additionally help my application especially shine!

I think you are in tremendous shape with your current stats. Your GPA is great, your GRE is superb, and your experience is slowly building up. I would think that you should have no problem picking the school that you want to attend! I took a few of my pre-reqs at a community college due to schedule conflicts/cheaper and it didn't affect me in any way!
