GPA's, GRE's, XTRA's, ACCEPTANCES

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I think you are in tremendous shape with your current stats. Your GPA is great, your GRE is superb, and your experience is slowly building up. I would think that you should have no problem picking the school that you want to attend! I took a few of my pre-reqs at a community college due to schedule conflicts/cheaper and it didn't affect me in any way!

bjackso0, thanks for the feedback. I really do hope I have good picks as I apply. I had planned on applying to as many as 12-15 schools, but now I'm thinking it might be a bit excessive...

Something else you might want to keep in mind about applying to lots of schools is the cost. ETS allows you to send your GRE scores to the first four schools for free, after that it's $27 per school. Thats $297 extra in GRE fees alone if you are planning on applying to lots of schools, not to mention the $25-75 per school application fee and the cost of getting out there for an interview. That could quickly add up to be in the thousands of dollars.

I have really similar numbers to yours (higher on some things, lower on others) and I'm going to pick my top 6 schools and apply to those. It's probably a waste of time and money to do anymore.

Yes I agree with you. I applied to 7 schools got into 2 and waitlisted at 4 and I had lower stats than that. And those were all California schools which are much more competitive

Holy crap, congrats on Stony Brook! Any advice specifically regarding Stony Brook? They're my #1 and I'm in a similarly average GPA situation (3.4 overall, 3.3-3.5 pre-req, 3.1 Science (3.3 if you take out my awful D+ in organic chem)). I'm concerned because they said they put a TON of weight on science GPA and my science GPA is a low spot.

I am applying this upcoming cycle as well!

University: Kennesaw State University
Major: Exercise and Health Science
GPA: 3.75
Pre-req GPA: 3.5ish
GRE: 152 V 157 Q 3.5 AW (not good, I know, but I have already taken it 3 times so I don't think I want to take it again)

Observation/Volunteer: ~200 hours divided over multiple settings (pediatrics, geriatrics, sports, inpatient, outpatient, neuro, ortho)

Work: Currently working full time at a doctors office (family practice). Even though it's not physical therapy, I'm working directly with patients- getting vitals, EKGs, Exerice stress tests, etc.

Extra: Student athlete, leader on the recruitment team for my sorority, coached gymnastics, member of multiple honor societies, member of Exercise Science club, attended SEACSM conference for multiple years, College volunteer program at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, volunteer at Shepherd Center, and going on my first mission trip to Costa Rica this October🙂

Applying: Georgia State, Mercer, Emory, North GA, Georgia Regents, Armstrong Atlantic, MUSC, and possibly St. Augustine

My stats:

University: American Public University
Major: Political Science (was law school bound)
Overall GPA: 3.52
Pre-Req GPA: 3.8ish
GRE: Low, 143ish on both
Extra-Curric: The International Diplomacy Club, International Brain Injury Association, Brain Injury Association of Florida, Ohana-Multiculural Student Club, Epilepsy Foundation of Florida, Pi Gamma Mu International Honor Society, and Political Science Scholar.
Volunteer/ Observation Hours: 250ish

Extra: The International Diplomacy Club, International Brain Injury Association, Brain Injury Association of Florida, Ohana-Multicultural Student Club, Epilepsy Foundation of Florida, Pi Gamma Mu International Honor Society, Public Health-Group Mentoring, and Political Science Scholar.

My application will be broad. I have casted a wide range of schools since my GRE is low and I am applying to most schools that do not require the GRE except for 3 schools. Good luck to you!

I guess, I'll jump in here. I'm applying this cycle as well.

University: University of Memphis
Major: Undergraduate: English, Masters: Secondary Education
Overall GPA: 3.9xx undergrad, 4.0 in Masters program.
Pre-Req GPA: 3.8xx
GRE: 169 V, 156 Q
Work Experience: 9 years as a Memphis City Schools teacher, wrestling coach, dean, learning coach, new teach mentor, etc.
Extra-Curric: Back in college: pre-med honor society, president of pre-med honor society, science honor society, SGA, sunday school teacher, tutor.
since college: vice-chairman of the county Democratic Party, secretary of party, executive committee of party, campaign manager for several campaigns, school discipline committee, faculty-administration concerns committee, several teaching awards
Volunteer/ Observation Hours: over 100 in a variety of areas in the past year.

I guess I'm a "non-traditional" applicant. I decided I didn't want the hours and debt of medicine so I taught in an inner-city school for most of a decade. I've decided to make a change though. The GRE was weird for me because I haven't had a math class in 12 years, but I think it should be good enough. Since I'm in my 30's, my extra-curricular list is kind of weird, but I guess I'll sit down and think of what might be relevant and what isn't.

I'm applying to UTHSC early decision and nothing else. My wife has a job she loves here, my daughter loves it here, we have a house, and we have parents and grandparents with health issues so we wouldn't want to move. It's UTHSC or bust I guess.

Best of luck to everyone!

I'm applying this cycle:

University: University of Arizona
Major: BS in Psychology and a minor in Pre-Health Studies
Overall GPA: 3.9
Pre-Req GPA: ~3.74ish depending on the classes.
GRE: 164 Verbal, 156 Quantitative, 5.0 Analytical Writing

Observation hours: 111 hours observing in a pediatric outpatient therapies clinic. My observation hours are probably the weakest part of my application as I was required to commit for at least 100 hours to the peds clinic, and then I had to leave for Seoul. I've been trying to find more observation hours here, but it's proving hard with working full time 9-5 (and PTs also working 9-5). I am hoping that my hundreds of hours of volunteering in hospitals helps in this area, as I've definitely come to learn what it's like to work with patients and medical professions in all areas.
Work Experience: I worked on-campus part time during a few of my semesters in undergrad. Currently a public school teacher with the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education.
Extra Curricular: I've volunteered/interned for a few hundred hours at various hospitals, including homeless departments, general hospital wards, and an emergency department with a county prison contract, all serving under-served populations (I used to want to go to med school). I've also served as a biology lab preceptor and was a member of the Muralcles service club. I also studied abroad at the National University of Singapore.

Applying to (likely): University of Washington, Northern Arizona University, Northwestern University, UPitt, UIC, Temple University, Drexel University, George Washington University...

(I'm applying to many schools partly because I'm too thorough for my own good, and partly because I don't know what problems may arise with apply from overseas later down the road. I do need to include a few more safety schools, though).

Extra-Curric: Clinical neuropsychology head lab assistant, Personality dynamics lab assistant, STRIPES (drunk driving alternative shuttle service) volunteer, Anatomy and physiology teacher's assistant, Hippotherapy lead volunteer in high school and just started at another place, world traveler (i.e., 22 countries)

You should retake the GRE and get that AW score up to at least a 4. Your numbers look good otherwise. Get a good study guide and focus on the writing section. If you don't retake I would look for shools that don't consider the GRE. A 3 is just too low for acceptance at most schools even though it may meet their minimum.

CONGRATULATIONS! Your stats aren't that bad though! What were your observation hours, and what type of settings did you volunteer?

I did about 80 hours of outpatient, 6 in neuro rehab, 16 inpatient, and I guess that leaves around 150 for home health. I did a lot of home health observation. But I did my observation hours through high school and college, so it was a long period of time.

University: California State University San Bernardino (Graduating March 2015)
Major: Kinesiology (Pre-Physical Therapy Concentration)
Overall GPA: 3.45
Pre-Req GPA: 3.35-ish
GRE: Taking at the end of July
Extra-Curric: Kinesiology Student Association, Community Outreach Program, DisAbility Sports Swimming Coach, DisAbility Sports Coach, Hubcap Leader (church), Information/Greeter (church), Young Children's Ministry (church).
Volunteer: 55 outpatient ortho (in progress); should have over 80 in two more weeks; starting inpatient soon, and am shooting for 80 there too, so hopefully over 160 hours total by the end of summer, and I want to keep accumulating hours in different settings through next April.

Applying To:
7 schools: Loma Linda U., Azusa Pacific U., U. of St. Augustine (San Marcos), San Diego State U., Chapman U., Western U. for Health Sciences, Long Beach State U. ...because they are all local (within about an hour drive from home). I'm applying for the 2015 cycle for all except Azusa Pacific, which starts in February, so if I am accepted, I wouldn't start until February 2016.

Although my GPA will be higher by the time I graduate (estimating 3.6), this is where I am at right now. I recognize that I need to do REALLY well on the GRE to at least compensate for my GPA a little bit. Good luck to everyone!

University: Clemson University
Major: Animal and Veterinary Sciences
Minor: Psychology
Overall GPA: 3.94
Pre-Req GPA: 4.0
GRE: TBA; taking July 7

Extra-Curric: Undergraduate Research, Women's Varsity Rowing, Club Swimming, Equine-Assisted Therapy, Pre-Allied Health Club, University Lifeguard
Volunteer/Observation Hours: ~70 outpatient ortho/hand/aquatic/neuro, 40 inpatient; aiming to get more at a subacute rehab hospital

Schools: Still figuring this out, but definitely MUSC, USC-Columbia, Duke, and Washington U. I'll probably apply to a few more.

I am simultaneously excited and nervous (as I assume all y'all are). Good luck everyone!

University: University of Florida
Major: Industrial & Systems Engineering (graduated in 2007, this is a career change for me!)
PTCAS Overall GPA: 3.28
PTCAS Pre-Req GPA: 3.75
Post-bacc GPA: 4.0
GRE: 161 V / 162 Q / 5.0 AW

Extra-Curric: I'm non-trad, so I agree that there's not a ton of extra time with a full-time job, taking pre-reqs, and getting in observation hours. I'm on the board of a non-profit that works with orphanages in Haiti, and I've also done some occasional volunteering with Special Olympics

Volunteer: Right now, I have about 60 Outpatient, and about 10 Inpatient. That should continue to grow, and I'm hoping to have at least 100 by the time I apply, and even more after that.

My GPA is on the lower side, but all of my lower grades were in specialized engineering classes (helloooo Thermodynamics!) so hopefully they won't have as much of an impact on my chances of getting into PT schools.

I am going to apply to Nova Southeastern, Miami, Maryland, GWU, Marymount, and Arcadia. Hopefully that casts a wide enough net and I'll get in at one of them!

Observation: 100 hours of observation between in and outpatient

Extra-Curric: exercise science club, rugby club this fall, conducted VO2 max and Wingate tests for research

Applying to: College of Mount St. Joseph, Andrews University, Bellarmine University, Rosalind Franklin University, Elon University, and possibly Wingate University and U of Indy

Just took the GRE back in June, and I really don't want to retake it. Will the 3 on AWA be a deal breaker for me with these stats? Most of the schools I have looked at average around a 4 AWA. Also has anyone looked at Rosalind Franklin and do you know whether their average GPA is your highest grade in each course or is an average for classes you may have repeated?

I emailed them in May and asked how they go about calculations with repeated courses. This is what they said: "In accordance with PTCAS GPA calculation procedures, all grades including repeated course grades are included in GPA calculations. Subjectively, we do look at grade trends and most recent coursework in considering an applicants academic record."

Hi everyone! I'm planning to apply for the 2015 cycle. I am listing my information because I'm not sure how competitive my current stats are. I'm applying to TWU, LSUHSC New Orleans, LSUHSC Shreveport, University of St. Augustine (Austin and Florida Location). I also took the GRE for the first time today, and am not sure whether I should consider retaking it or not. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

University: University of Louisiana at Lafayette
Major: Kinesiology- Exercise Science
Overall GPA: 3.838
Pre-Req GPA: 3.49
GRE: 153V and 155Q; awaiting AW scores

-Assistant coach for former high school varsity softball team, acquiring about 250 hours of volunteer service here
-Active involvement with Girl Scouts of America
-Prevent Child Abuse America volunteer

PT Clinical Observation Hours:
-Currently at only 30 hours (outpatient), but will have about 100 outpatient hours and 50 peds hours upon application

I will have rec letters from two PTs and one from my current employer who is a communications expert. I also have a lot of other minor community involvement and impressive high school stats that I will add, and have held a part time job as a file clerk and personal assistant throughout my undergraduate career. But, I just listed above the parts of my resume that I think are most significant. If anyone could give me some feedback, that'd be great! Thanks!

Having anything from high school on your application is a big no-no. Just curious, what are these "impressive stats?"

Okay, well scratch that then. They're irrelevant!

I knew that was protocol for writing resumes, but I was kind of under the impression that significant information from high school should be included? Because I thought that they pretty much want you list everything you've done through PTCAS! But that makes sense that they would only want most recent information. Thanks for the response.

P.S. Any additional input on the relevant information I've listed is still appreciated.

Hi all!

I've been reading this thread and it has provided me with a lot of useful information and many inspiring stories. I will be applying this admissions cycle and had a question about the PTCAS academic update and how it will affect my application.

I will be taking four classes this Fall semester (2 pre-reqs), but my grades for these classes will not be available until January 5th though I intend to update my grades as soon as they are . My GPA is not that strong, around 3.3 GPA and 3.0 pGPA, and I expect these classes to help boost my GPA.

Will most schools have already begun making admissions decisions by the time that my update will be processed? I understand that all schools are different, but I just want to know in general if schools will even consider my academic update a factor during admissions as it will probably be closer to February by the time that they see it. I will be applying to California schools (i.e. Western, the CSU's, Chapman, etc.)

If you're patiently waiting then you're way better at this than I am. I think the frequency with which I check my email and PTCAS qualifies as OCD at this point. 🙂

Under the pt school designations does it say that PTCAS has mailed the application for you? And do you know if the schools can see your application if you have e-submitted but still are waiting on references/transcripts?

I spoke with them on the phone yesterday. Once we are e-submitted, schools have access to everything electronically.

No. The email they sent me Thursday said it would go out at the next mailing though. They do see the application before all your references and transcripts are in. They send those updates in after they get them.

Interview:

Rejected: ETSU (7/22)

I was really sad to get the rejection email from ETSU this morning and from what I understood from their admissions department, my stats were comparable to those of accepted students. Anybody have success with them or perspective for me?

Your scores are above the average for accepted students there. That's just weird. Did you ask them why?

If you're applying early decision for UT-Chattanooga how did they already reject you at ETSU? I thought we could only apply to other programs after our early decision is decided?

Is it possible they somehow thought you were applying for the previous cycle? I thought we couldn't start applications for this cycle until July, but you said you submitted 6/25. Good luck! I'm applying early decision to UTHSC.

ETSU doesn't use PTCAS (they will starting next year) so for this cycle, the application was directly with the school, due July 1. The program starts in January 2015.
I asked the admissions department for any feedback in case I reapply but I haven't heard anything back yet since I just asked today.
Since I haven't submitted my PTCAS application to UTC yet, I wasn't considered an early decision candidate when I applied for ETSU. Thanks for the feedback! Fingers crossed on UTC.

I had no idea ETSU does that. I looked at that school when I started applying, but they only take the separate Anatomy and Physiology classes

University: Georgia Southern
Major: Philosophy

Overall GPA (PTCAS) : 2.61 (non-traditional student that graduated in 2007)
Pre-req GPA (PTCAS): 3.63
Post-bac GPA (Kennesaw State): 3.81

GRE: 160V, 156Q, 4.0 AW

Extra-Curric: Been working as a high school basketball coach for the past 7 seasons. When I decided to go back to school, I also did some volunteering at different events, and tutoring as a member of AMSA, DEI, and Golden Key.

Observation: About 200...60 at SNF, 50 outpatient, 40 hippotherapy, 40 inpatient, and 7 inpatient pediatrics.

Applying to North Georgia ED, but if I don't get in there, I will then apply to Georgia State, Mercer, and Georgia Regents. Looking for a few more out-of-state schools that would be relatively inexpensive and don't have a hard cap on overall GPA. Luckily for me, most of the Georgia schools will at least take a look at my application before filtering and tossing it out. Emory and Armstrong-Atlantic are the only exceptions.

Got an email today from ETSU, reversing my rejection! They said that more interview spots opened up and now I have a slot! Woohoo!

Somewhat a non-traditional student so any advice would be great!

University of Illinois at Chicago
Major: B.S. in Kinesiology
Overall Undergrad GPA: 3.53 (3.56 after the likely A grades from Fall 2014)
Pre-req GPA: (3.5-3.65ish based on program)
Volunteer Hours: 75 hours and counting (25 Hospice care in Africa, 50 Vestibular Rehab, more to come in Vestibular Rehab and Orthopedics)
Work Experience: Past year have been a Exercise Physiologist/Specialist - it's a hybrid position, work at a pulmonary exercise clinic, doing a lot of diagnostic exercise test/studies. Previously Worked as a Medical Assistant at a orthopedic clinic. In 2012 I spent 3 months in Africa volunteering as a MA and PT aide (mostly MA).
GRE: V 149, Q 162, AW 4.0 (311 overall)

Graduate GPA
: 2.88 GPA (Only ~17 semester hours. Attended physician assistant program in 2011, voluntarily left because it was the wrong career choice (heart is in PT!). Half of the programs I apply to only look at undergrad GPA anyways. The rest factor in all coursework, but ~17 semester hours only puts a small dent in my GPA (~3.48). Plus got a B grade in graduate level A&P, which is not bad in my opinion.

Applying: Rosalind Franklin, Midwestern, Northwestern, University of Illinois at Chicago, Northern Illinois, Governors, Carroll, Maybe Concordia and UofMilwaukee.

Any comments are greatly appreciated. Thank you.
