GPA's, GRE's, XTRA's, ACCEPTANCES

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For what it's worth, I know of a few current students who did a whole summer at other PT schools, got off wait lists for in state schools and withdrew to go there starting in the fall semester. The cost savings was significant. It's a tough position for sure, but it happens.

Read for those with low stats:

I know how you feel I was terribly freaked out about my low stats and thought I would never get into PT school. I desperately wanted to be accepted but I thought it would take a few years of retaking prereqs and raising my GPA (3.17). I even struggled in some prereqs including anatomy 2. However, I am ecstatic to say that I was accepted to 2 schools this application period. Don't give up and keep working hard. For comparisons sake my stats are as follows:

GPA: 3.17
PrereqGPA: 3.0
GRE: V-152 M-159 W-5
Over 2000 hours of shadowing (worked as a tech for a year).

Good luck to everyone in their future endeavors but just wanted to show that there is hope for you with low stats!

What two programs were you accepted ?

Can I take prerequisite classes at different school? For example, chemistry 1 at a community college and chemistry 2 at a calstate and vice versa?
I just talk to a junior college counselor and he highly discourage me not to take different it in different school because grad school wont even considered it?

Yes, you can take pre-reqs at different schools. I finished my chem, physics, and biology series at my university along with CC.

My advice: Get a new counselor because the one you have obviously doesn't know diddly squat about grad programs. I took a couple prerequisites at CC and so have thousands of others on SDN.

Yea that's a shame your counselor told you that. I had some professors in school tell me taking CC classes wouldn't count. But if you do your research, you'll quickly find out that's not the case.

Happy to have heard back from my last school, even if it doesn't change my decision. I've spent a lot of time on this forum looking for and asking for advice so thanks to all for the help! Really glad I decided to apply this cycle - I came to PT really late in the application cycle this year and was afraid my late submission and few observation hours would hurt my chances. Excited for this next year and my future career!

Why did you choose umb over ge?

Hey, I am going to be applying for the 2015-16 cycle of PTCAS, and I was wondering if someone (preferably a current student or alum in/of these programs, but will take info from anyone) could give me some insight of the pro's and con's of these programs: Univ of Maryland -Eastern Shore, Hampton Univ, Mercer Univ, Chatham Univ, Drexel Univ. Any feedback at all would be a super help for me. I have already researched extensively at all of these programs, and I am just trying to get a feel of what the experiences within them are.

My Pre-req GPA is 3.53, can still go up as I haven't taken physics 1 &2 yet
Overall GPA is 3.31
GRE 307: 159 Q, 148 V, 4.0 AW.

With these scores am I good to go (with respect to these programs) or should I re-take it? I am really just nervous about my quantitative score. I know this was long so thanks for sticking with it lol, once again any help would be appreciated!

Congratulations on all your acceptances! Thats phenomenal! I was wondering what extracurriculars you did. As in things you had on your application aside from what you've listed..school clubs, old jobs, research…whatever else you had. Any personal advice for a junior in college hoping to get into the same schools you got in to??

I've been waiting for this application cycle to be over before posting my stats and acceptances. So here we go!
*Some details will be left out to preserve anonymity

Undergrad: University of Cincinnati
Cumulative GPA: 3.61
PTCAS/Core Pre-Req GPA: 3.70
Math & Science GPA: 3.52
GRE: 159/160/4.5
Observation: 1000+ hours ortho, neuro, peds, aquatic, acute (I work as a tech)
Extracurriculars: Briefly - tons of volunteering for health/fitness events & orgs; very involved in one university club (w/ extensive leadership in said club); lots and lots of research experience, including co-author on several published studies; teaching assistant (instructed labs)
Letters of Rec: 3 - DPT/PhD, Prof in major, DPT. I am very very close with all three. As in, I have had beers with them all, I call them by their first names, and we text. I know they wrote amazing letters.

Application submitted on October 1 deadline.

Applied: 7 programs
Accepted: 7 programs

Schools and dates of acceptance:
University of Delaware, Nov 14
Ohio University, Nov 25
Ohio State University, Nov 27
University of Cincinnati, Dec 11
University of Toledo, Jan 15
University of Vermont, March 4
University of Kentucky, March 12

Interviews: UDel, OU, UT, UK
Open House: OSU, UC

Attending: Omitting for privacy reasons. And I will not tell you in a PM, so don't ask. Although in previous posts I have mentioned several schools that I declined.

However, if any future applicants have questions about any of these programs, I would be happy to answer questions in a PM!

To sum up my application: My quantitative measures are not stellar (below avg for some programs), but I think my LORs, research experience, and essay are what got me a 100% acceptance rate. I also feel like I dominated the four interviews I attended. Overall, my application focused on my desire to become a clinical researcher and my plan to also get a PhD.

Some other relevant facts: I answered "No" and actually used that box at the beginning of the app. Gasp! And even worse, I blamed it on the medical leave of absence I required. Including the unrepeated F I got in a literature class. I suffer from bipolar disorder with severe depression, experienced my first psychotic break, and skipped a lot of class, missed exams, and failed to complete assignments. And you know what. None of the schools cared. So lets not tell fellow applicants that illness is not an excuse for poor grades. Because sometimes it is. And I hope you read this and learn that having a mental illness does not mean you can't be successful.

Bet you didn't see that twist ending coming, did you?

Hi! Congrats on all your acceptances!! Thats amazing! I was wondering what kind of research you did and how exactly you got to be coauthors on several published articles. Congrats again!

As in things you had on your application aside from what you've listed..school clubs, old jobs, research…whatever else you had. Somewhat ironically, my strongest extracurricular is probably the one that doesn't pertain to PT very much - I have 1000+ hours as a emergency medical scribe (was considering medical school before applying to PT). Having the contrast between the ED and PT seemed to shine in almost all of my interviews and my personal statement. So I would say it may help to get some clinical experience outside of the PT environment so that you can learn about healthcare in general and compare/contrast that with PT. And with that you can stand out a bit more from the average PT applicant whose sole healthcare experience is in an outpatient ortho facility.

Beyond that, I do ortho and rehab research at my state's research facility, worked as a personal trainer during undergrad and volunteered in various educational positions. As you can tell my GPA was good but not stellar (ochem, biochem and pchem take a toll on your GPA) so I focused on getting a high GRE to look good on paper. If your GPA is average or below average you'll really have to shine on your GRE to make up for it.

Good luck!

Congrats!! I will be applying to schools this summer, and I just took the GRE's for the first time. I got 142V and 154Q. On PTCAS, most of the schools I will be applying to have "minimum required" GRE scores ranging from 146V to 150V; my 142V didnt reach either. I have always struggled with verbal sections of tests, and I am worried that I will not be able to improve my score. I prepared a lot for this test but only received 142 on Verbal. Would you recommend retaking it to get a higher Verbal score or leave it as is? Thanks so much I appreciate the help!!

Hey guys! I just took the GRE's for the first time and I'm not too sure if I'm happy with my scores or not. I studied everyday the past two weeks and ended up getting a 142V and 154Q. I am happy with my quantitative score, but not sure about verbal. Most schools have a minimum of either 145 or 150 for the verbal section. It doesn't seem like much of a difference from 142, so I'm not sure what to do.

Any advice?

Yes, if you have the time to retake the GRE I would highly suggest to increase your Verbal score to at least 150+. From what I've seen and after speaking with different admission offices, verbal score actually is weighed more than quantitative. Also if you don't meet the minimum requirements set by each program, they won't even review your application. So make certain that you meet all prerequisites prior to submitting your application. Good Luck! 😀

Ok thank you! Do you have any study or preparation tips to improve the verbal score?

I would suggest to use Magoosh online Test Prep... they've been really helpful. I felt if I retook the GRE again I would've gotten a better verbal score of 150+... unfortunately due to personal circumstances I had to cancel my GRE retake date and wasn't able to make the cutoff date for my applications. Luckily, Pacific doesn't use the GRE and that is now the school I will be attending.

Also, make certain you have enough time to study as well as time before the GRE cutoff dates for certain schools. Note that some schools are rolling admissions and others are not, if you plan to submit your applications to those with rolling admissions you'll want to send your application as early as possible.

I'm currently in my first year of DPT school at UD, but I remembered how helpful this forum was for me as I was applying last summer and figured I'd add a post and hopefully help some future DPT's out!

I really don't want to retake the GRE...

I hate to be that guy, but you're probably going to need to retake it. Lots of programs don't even look at your app unless you meet their minimum requirements, which for most programs includes a 150 on both Quant and Verbal.

For all my programs I do meet the minimuns, but I appreciate your comment. And am still wrestling between taking it again or not I just hate that dang test.

Oh, awesome then! That's great. Yeah, it obviously can't hurt to boost your scores but that test is a pain/expensive and your other stats seem perfectly competitive. Good luck!

Can anyone comment on anything they've heard about any of these schools? I won't have time to visit them all before I apply, and I might take 2 off.
Thanks!

UNC favors in-state students, and if you meet all minimums for GPA and GRE, they move you forward and never look at them again. Basically you need to stand out in everything beyond GPA/GRE. A 3.3 GPA has just as good of a chance of getting in as a 3.9 GPA if they are strong in other places.

Hi! I'm getting ready to apply for the first time this cycle and just wanted to start posting on the thread...especially since it's been my main source of reading material lately.

School: Bridgewater College
Major: Health and Exercise Science, Psychology Minor
Overall GPA: 4.0
Pre-Req GPA: 4.0
GRE: Q-157, V-160, still waiting on writing score
Extra-Curric: certified field hockey coach (high school & rec league), pre-med society (health & human sciences rep), lend-a-paw animal aid society (vice president), academic coach (team leader/Outstanding Academic Assistant of the Year), interim tutor coordinator, statistics tutor, Alpha Chi honor society, Psi Chi honor society, Philomathes honor society, human bio TA, and will be doing research on intrinsic motivation and exercise this upcoming year
Hours: 123 hours total (20 pelvic floor, 60 pediatrics/neuro, 43 outpatient ortho)

Money is going to play a huge factor in where I end up attending so I'm mainly looking at state schools: Old Dominion, Virginia Commonwealth, and Radford. I'm also considering applying to Shenandoah, Lynchburg, and Hampton but I've hesitant about Hampton because they've lost their accreditation in past and want to visit the other schools before deciding to apply.

Thanks!

I don't think you should have any problem getting into the schools you are applying to. Solid cGPA, pre-req GPA, and GRE scores. Also, being trilingual, a religious minority, and an immigrant should work in your favor. Maybe might want to get a few more observation hours though. You probably won't begin hearing back until September-December since deadlines aren't for a few months.

Thanks for the reply. Most of the schools I listed have under 100 hours observation requirement, maybe one had 100 exactly. Forgot to mention I did undergrad research also, but didn't indicate it under extracurriculars (mentioned it in some of the essays and it does show in my transcript). I am not doing early decision, but I sent in all my stuff very early-otherwise I'd be getting paranoid (not that I'm not right now, a little bit).

Your nearly 4,000 hours of observation/experience are extremely impressive, by the way.
