University: MIT (Class of 2013)
Major: Chemistry
Minor: Biology
Overall GPA: 3.9
Pre-Req GPA: 3.7 (Blame Physics II. Also, not sure about this number, chem labs were completely separate classes - 4 credits lecture, 4 credits lab)
GRE: 162V, 167Q, 4.5AW

Planning to take A&P in the fall/spring.

Observation Hours:
30h inpatient acute care
24h neuro rehab
72h outpatient (another ~40 in progress)

Extra-Curric: MIT Russian Club, tutoring undergrad chemistry (very briefly), study abroad (Cambridge University, 1 year), various undergraduate research, 2 years working full time as a research assistant at Mass General Hospital (immunology), currently working as a research assistant at Rockefeller University (also immunology).

Applied: MGH IHP (top choice), UCSF, SDSU, Emory, Mount St Mary, UIC, UC Denver, Regis, NAU, USA

Thanks for the reply. Most of the schools I listed have under 100 hours observation requirement, maybe one had 100 exactly. Forgot to mention I did undergrad research also, but didn't indicate it under extracurriculars (mentioned it in some of the essays and it does show in my transcript). I am not doing early decision, but I sent in all my stuff very early-otherwise I'd be getting paranoid (not that I'm not right now, a little bit).

Your nearly 4,000 hours of observation/experience are extremely impressive, by the way.

You will be just fine. The sooner you get the application in, the less you have to worry about any issues arising with transcripts being sent and whatnot. And thank you about my hours. Trying to make up for a slightly lower GPA.

You should be good. GPA will be above average at least. Why not retake the GRE?

You should be good. GPA will be above average at least. Why not retake the GRE?

Yeah I definitely should've to hedge my bet, but my finances are tight and I have some fear that I might somehow flop the AW portion again. I also don't feel I have the time necessary to study for it at this moment. Are these legitimate reasons to not retake it? Probably not. Did you take the GRE multiple times?

Noticed you're an undergrad at the U of MN. How do you like it?

I took it once. I think it'd be worth it for you to try again. Maybe practice writing some essays in response to sample questions?

The U of M was OK. It's what you make of it. For me it was a bit too large so it was difficult for me to integrate. I think I would have enjoyed a smaller school more, which is why I would prefer St. Kate's for grad school. The education was pretty good. Lots of research opportunities if that's your thing.

Hi Everyone,
I'm a long-time lurker and wanted to get my first PT application post started. I'm a non-trad student. I had a successful career for many years then returned to school. (yeah, yeah I know my numbers are low) I really appreciate all of those that have contributed over the years to this thread...especially the low GPA success stories!! Now its finally my time to contribute. I've taken a very strategic approach to applying. My fingers are crossed that I've selected schools that will be favorable to my stats (such as NON-GRE schools or those with specific Psych course requirements etc...) Some items will be omitted or generally stated for privacy purposes. Updates to come!

University: State University + CCs
Major: Psychology
Overall GPA: TBD (I honestly don't know yet)
Pre-Req GPA: 3 - 3.5 depending on program. Blame Chemistry! Will be revised after academic update (3 courses in progress)

Extra-Curric: Thousands of various community service hours plus 20 hrs campus student health center, 10 hrs Animal Assisted Therapy Volunteer, pre-health club, play tennis
PT Volunteer: 35 Inpatient, 140 Outpatient - Both In Progress

Applied: Plan to apply to many

We actually have very similar stats, but from I'm from VA - I'm applying to a lot of CA schools, though, how about you?

I am with you in the low Extra department, I have two listed so far. I'm sure you can add something to that category. Think of things you did outside of school besides work. Think of anything! I put down Intramural sports captain, and member of Pre PT club even though I only attended a few meetings. Do your best to just put something down, I too am hoping it is not a big factor in the schools I'm looking at as well. Other than that everything else looks great! Good luck!

I just finished my summer classes. Now the only thing I'm waiting for is the LOR that the PT that I shadowed last summer said she would write before I apply. Unfortunately she's impossible to get in touch with and hasn't responded to me in weeks. I feel bad for coming to her clinic unannounced but I suppose it might come to that. Otherwise, I had my other 2 LORs done by my A&P professor and a professor from my major. I plan on asking the PT I'm currently shadowing for a LOR before I leave for pre-season. Overall it's been a pretty stressful journey to get to the point where I am now. But, it's made me confident that I don't want to do anything other than PT.

I'm casting a pretty wide net and taking the brunt of the app fees for my best chances to get in somewhere. Any thoughts on my chances?!

@krissybear In response to both of your posts...Hi! nice to know someone has similar stats. Good luck on the retake. I wish you well!

Yes I'm applying to CA schools along with other states. I don't plan on retaking the GRE (for a variety of reasons, not worth explaining) but, there is hope considering some programs do not require it and some do not require a minimum score

I can't list anything more!! I already submitted the app. I should've put pre-health club bcz I did attend a few of the meetings over the years, lol. I'm playing the waiting game right now and just hoping.

I like your chances! You've got good stats and I think your extra-curriculars should put you in a great position. Being able to manage all of that and still keep up with observation hours, class work, etc. shows well for you. As for the LOR from the therapist, don't worry about being a nuisance. I had a similar experience with one of my LORs who was a PT. They are obviously just very busy, but if anybody understands the importance of getting the LORs for the application it's them. So just keep sending polite reminders with specific dates of when you need to have it by and hopefully everything will work itself out! Other than that, best of luck!!

Would love to hear any opinions on my chances or the schools that I am applying to. I wish that my verbal score was higher, but given everything else I do not think it will be too much of a concern. Thanks!
I'm currently in my first year at Delaware, but also was accepted to Duke so I can speak to you in regards to those two programs. Your GPA is strong and your GRE scores are quite similar to what I had when I was applying. I can see you've got a good variety of observation hours in different settings and a great list of extra curriculars. Overall, I think you have a great chance of getting some interviews/acceptances!! Hope to see you here at UD in the near future! Let me know if you have any questions.

Had been looking the premed route but shadowed a bit and it left a bad taste. Shadowed PT and loved it; thus had to cram in my shadowing time this summer. Should I expand the scope outside of UW? The instate tuition and familiarity with the community are lovely perks, as is the research focus, but are there any schools I should check out this upcoming week that offer to cover tuition for low income/high qualified students?

Thanks, my pre-req GPA last year was a 3.38. I'm a little surprised myself, but I also applied to mostly California schools and the competition is tough!

just e-submitted my application and all supplemental applications
University: University of Central Florida
Major: Pre-Clinical Health Sciences
Overall GPA: 3.22 (PTCAS), 3.3 UCF
Pre-req GPA: 3.5-3.6 depending on the school
last 60 credits: 3.6
GRE: 157V 159Q 4.0W
Observation: 150 peds, 50 outpatient geriatrics, 50 inpatient, currently working as an aide at an outpatient center will probably get about 500 additional hrs by the end of the year

applying: NOVA, FIU, Miami, UCF

This is my first year applying, I'm pretty nervous about my low overall GPA, but i've worked hard to make up for it with my pre-reqs and GRE.

University: UW-Whitewater (graduated Fall semester of 2014)
Major: Biology, Emphasis on Pre-Biomedical Professions
*no minor required, higher credit requirement for major due to emphasis
Overall GPA: 3.4
PTCAS prereq GPA: 3.25
GRE: 153V, 156Q, 4.0AW
Observation: 139 hours total across 4 years in geriatrics/inpatient, outpatient, with an observation under a therapist serving mostly individuals with some type of handicap or paralysis
Extra-Curr.: UW-Whitewater Club Lacrosse
Work: student ticket worker for athletic and performing arts events for 3 years, general labor job during the summers, Resident Care Assistant from 1/2015-6/2015
Applying to: 15-16 schools, too lazy to type them out
*First time reapplicant

Fingers crossed. Didn't figure I would be going for education past my undergrad until 2 years through, which hurt me since I wasn't taking my GPA too seriously. Just a bad attitude in the past that I regret. Got mostly B+s in my prereqs and a C+ in Chem II was a real downer for me, as you can see. My last semester I got all A's in upper level classes though, so I'm hoping that gets factored in. Might say something about that in that small section given to explain if your transcripts reflect your work ethic and why. No other mentionable extra-curriculars. Number of hours is above not only the minimum, but also what is recommended for all the schools I'm applying to so I'm not concerned about that. Recently CPR/AED and First Aid Certified. Taking my CNA licensure test on Tuesday, will work as that until I hopefully get into a program. Submitting before Sept. 1st. Good luck to all (but also, save me a spot, haha)!

*Edit: 8/23/15 - e-submitted
*Edit: 3/5/16 - Attending Rosalind Franklin University!

Major: Spanish
Grad degree: MPH, Virginia Tech
Overall GPA: 2.99 undergrad, 4.0 grad school
Pre-Req GPA: 4.0 in all science classes (taken at CC) with maybe a few Bs from undergrad psych
GRE: V:161 Q:156 AW:4.5

Extra-Curric: varsity swimming, adopt-a-grandparent, sorority, athletes in action, apha student organization, graduate student body delegate, 5 weeks volunteer work in mexico at pediatric cancer center, Hokie Wellness student intern, RAM volunteer for two RAM weekends

Volunteer: 600+ outpatient as PT tech, only 20 in another inpatient setting... I'm a little worried about this, but because I work full-time now as a Tech, I had to schedule shadowing elsewhere in my time off. I thought I had something lined up and then after giving me the run around for a few weeks during my ONLY FREE TIME TO SHADOW, I gave up and frantically called somewhere else. At that point I only had free time for about 20 hours though

Applied: VCU, ODU, Radford, Lynchburg, Miami <-- really interested in prosthetics and I think they do a lot of cool prosthetics research

I'm worried about my volunteering as I didn't expose myself to too many different settings, but I'm a second career student so I hope that shows that I'm committed to the profession... I also had a less than stellar undergrad simply because I didn't have my act together and didn't know what I wanted to do, so I didn't care too much about my GPA. I really focused on school in grad school and in community college taking my science classes, so all of my recent classes are As, but I'm not too sure about my chances because of a crappy undergrad... does anyone have any thoughts? Should I designate more schools? I was just hoping one of these would pan out, but I have no idea! I hope the GREs are ok - I took them one time without having much time to study, thinking I would just see how I did and retake them if I needed to. I wish the math were a little higher, but I know they at least meet the minimum scores so I decided not to retake them and spend all that money again.... anyone else applying to these schools?

You sound like a very strong applicant with your extra-curriculars and graduate degree. I wouldn't worry about retaking the GRE, your scores are higher than most the average acceptance scores for schools I have seen. Prosthetics is something that interests me too, I am an engineering major so I think that could be a cool way to combine my interests.

I agree! I think I would have liked engineering if I had actually had some good advising as an undergraduate. I've even been looking at being a prosthetist but the job market doesn't seem as good as it would be for PT. Miami has a PhD degree in amputee rehab/prosthetics but I think most of the research is probably done by the phd students and not dpt students. Regardless, I sent in an application and emailed the guy doing the research. It wouldn't be so bad to move to Miami for three years!

I ran into the same problem with observation hours... But as someone working full-time, returning to school, I think it's hard for admissions committees to compare us to college students with a little more free time. It looks like you have a good amount though, so that shouldn't affect it. I wish I could have gotten experience in three settings like you!

Just FYI, I was initially rejected from Fresno State a few weeks ago. I received the rejection letter and everything. However, just yesterday I got call from them rescinding their rejection and offered me a seat for their program. Unfortunately, I had to decline it since I'm situated and settled in Oregon already for Pacific's program. I just wanted to show all future applicants that it's always possible to gain an acceptance offer. So don't be discouraged by being on wait lists or if you feel that your stats aren't competitive enough. If you want to be a PT then continue to persevere and shoot for your best. It'll always work out in the end. Good Luck to all of you this upcoming PTCAS cycle.

I am worried about my GRE score 🙁, any advice on whether or not I should retake it? It's too late for UW-L, but would I be okay if I did not retake for other programs if I am not accepted there? I really do not want to retake due to time/money constraints, but if it were the deciding factor on my acceptance to programs then I definitely will. A little afraid that I could score worse though :/ I would appreciate any thoughts or advice, thanks! Good Luck to everyone applying this cycle 🙂

I think you are fine too....make sure your essay is very good. Have lots of editors go through it. If I were admissions, I would just want to make sure you are an ok writer....the verbal and math portions seem fine, writing is slightly low but not the worst. So if your essay is ok, that will help. If it were me, the only reason I would retake is if I needed to make a minimum score at another school. Do any of your second choice schools have minimum GRE scores? Check that out and make sure you are good there.

I appreciate the advice! I worked pretty hard on my essay and had numerous people review it, so I hope it shows that my writing ability is proficient. I meet the minimum for all of my second choice schools, so I should be okay there as well. Thanks again for the input! 🙂

I've already taken the GRE twice to improve my verbal score but 145 is as good as it's going to get. Most schools have a 146 verbal requirement so I'm hoping my 145 will be enough, given all of my extracurricular's and strong GPA. Waiting to submit my application until my transcript is processed, my references submit their letters, and all of my PT's verify my volunteer hours. Any idea if I can submit it anyway even though they haven't finished submitting everything? Not sure what to do. Also, any pieces of advice about the chances of me getting accepted to any schools based on my stats would be greatly appreciated.

Also, does anyone know if East Carolina accepts Organic Chemistry for Chem 2?

Good luck to anyone else who is applying this year 🙂

You should submit as soon as you have everything on your part ready, even if your hours haven't been verified or your references sent in.

I don't think ECU would accept organic chem as a pre-req for the general chemistry 1 & 2 requirements..you can always email or call to ask though. I called to ask if my advanced level biostat could replace a general stat requirement and they wouldn't accept it. Had to take a basic stat class..

Also, if you don't meed the minimum requirements for the GRE, it is also unlikely that they will even look at your application (computer may filter out those that don't meet expectations). But that's just my 2 cents. I'm not 100% sure on that.

You should submit as soon as you have everything on your part ready, even if your hours haven't been verified or your references sent in.

ok - thanks! After I submit it, can I still check on the statuses of the transcript, references, and verified hours?
