GPA's, GRE's, XTRA's, ACCEPTANCES

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I don't think ECU would accept organic chem as a pre-req for the general chemistry 1 & 2 requirements..you can always email or call to ask though. I called to ask if my advanced level biostat could replace a general stat requirement and they wouldn't accept it. Had to take a basic stat class..

Also, if you don't meed the minimum requirements for the GRE, it is also unlikely that they will even look at your application (computer may filter out those that don't meet expectations). But that's just my 2 cents. I'm not 100% sure on that.

Yeah, I was worried about that. I checked all of the PT Schools' websites and when it talked about the GRE minimum requirements, there was only one school that aggressively stated that they WILL NOT accept anything below a 146 on verbal. The rest either didn't have a minimum, or did have a minimum but didn't reinforce it too much. Hoping that means the computer won't filter out my scores for those schools.

UCF definitely looks at minimum GRE scores and GPAs. They pick their top 100 applicants based on numerical statistics for their interview process

Hi Peeps~
I'm submitting my app to PTCAS by the end of the week.

University: UC Irvine -> UC Davis
Major: Biology
Overall GPA: 3.0
Pre-Req GPA: 3.34 - 3.40 (Currently retaking Physic II and another psych course, trying to raise to 3.5+ considering that I'm looking at applying next year as well)
GRE: Q 161 (80%), V 150 (50%), AW 4.5 (80%)

Extra-Curricular: Ministry Club (for secular and religious personal pursuits), IM sports, Exercise Biology Club, and Pre-PT Club. Certified personal trainer and first-aide provider.
Volunteer: 40+ hrs for Church community service. 80 hrs in UCDMC Pediatric Emergency Room (Non PT).
PT Volunteer: 220 hrs Outpatient, 4+ hrs Inpatient (Pediatric hospital that I'm at right now), 200+ as a PT assistant in outpatient setting.

Applying to schools (12) on the west coast. Not looking at CSU, more at private institutions who accept lower GPA candidates.
I have pretty solid rec letters because of my on-going PT assistant experience. Hoping that everything else can make up for my low pGPA 🙁

Would love to hear some feedback from y'all! I don't mind answering questions either 🙂

Wow that's a bummer. Even if I'm only off by 1 point? Lol do you have any recommendations on other pt schools that don't look at the minimum?

you have some nice GRE stats, I always felt like that held a little more weight than GPAs as long as you're above minimum, but that's just me. anyway, nice job.

University: University of California, Irvine
Majors: Dance Performance and Economics
Overall GPA: 3.3ish (waiting to see how PTCAS calculates my GPA)
Pre-Req GPA: 3.65
GRE: 160 (V) 159 (Q) 4.5 (AW)

Extra-Curric: Volunteer at church nursery, UCI Dance Department Student Advisory committee, Environmental Nature Center Volunteer, BLS certified, teacher's assistant/substitute teacher at ballet studio

Awards: Dean's Honor List, John Hollowell Composition Program Best Analysis Essay Award

Volunteer: 25 In-patient (geriatrics), 233 Outpatient (general orthopedic, oncology, pulmonary, home health, pediatrics, women's health)

Applied: CSULB ED, Mt. Saint Mary's and Chapman if ED doesn't work out

My overall GPA is a little lacking, pre-req GPA could be a little higher and I know CSUs are super competitive, but I'm hoping I get lucky with ED! It's really hard for me to boost my overall GPA since I've taken so many classes already. If things don't work out this cycle, I'll try to get more inpatient hours and possibly retake statistics and get an A. I have a C in Gen Chem 1 and a B in one of my stats classes, but chem seems like such a hassle to retake, especially if I can just take stats online.

Anxiously waiting for September 25!

Wow that's a bummer. Even if I'm only off by 1 point? Lol do you have any recommendations on other pt schools that don't look at the minimum?
Unfortunately yes. They had over 900 applicants last term and their philosophy is that "they have to start somewhere."
All of the schools I've looked into consider the minimum GRE score. I know there's a couple schools in Florida that have a cumulative range you need to fall into, and some schools don't require GRE at all but I am not sure of which programs off the top of my head

Just e-submitted this morning... Will update once I get my PTCAS generated GPAs...

Still have to complete A&P II (retake) & Physics I (Fall 2015) and Physics II & Chemistry II (retake) (Spring 2016)... I'm worried about having these classes outstanding when my application will be in review, but it is what it is :xf:

Congratulations! How long after you submitted your application were you notified of your acceptance and how were you notified? What time frame were you given to accept?

no, but get them in asap, i think itll hinder the application from being sent out to schools

what about transcripts? I am taking a trip to my undergrad college on Monday to put in the request to send my transcript to ptcas. If I wanted to, can I send my application in right now before Monday, wait until after Monday, or wait until the transcript is completely processed through ptcas?

Q: Do I have to wait for my transcripts to be received at PTCAS before I can e-submit my application?
A: No. You can and should e-submit your PTCAS application as soon as you are confident that you have completed all sections accurately. PTCAS will accept your transcripts and other materials when they arrive, regardless of whether you have yet e-submitted your application.

Thank you! I was notified four weeks after all my materials were received and given 10 days to accept. I accepted! Minnesota is non-PTCAS so I had already completed PTCAS before I got back my decision.

I am very nervous about how quickly my app will be processed. My #1 school's deadline is October 1 (6 weeks from Thursday)!
PTCAS says it may take 4-5 weeks to process. If anyone could let me know their e-submission/processing experience, that would be MUCH appreciated!
the deadline is just for the esubmission. There is still time to process the application. However, some of the schools might have rolling admissions which would be in your disfavor.

Did you apply early decision at any of your other choices through PTCAS? Was U of MN your first choice and if you are accepted at any of your other choices, would you back out at the U of Mn? Did you have to submit a deposit- how much and is it refundable?

OK, here's a question: How important in the science GPA? I have a 3.48 cumulative, 3.52 in pre-reqs, but 3.28 in sci. I do, however, have A's in both anatomy and physiology. GREs are 161/160/5.0.

I think science GPA is pretty important. I have a 3.95 sGPA and a mediocre GRE and I already have an interview at every school I applied to.

You also have a high cGPA and very high pGPA. I don't think science GPA is as important as either of those things or the GRE.

I'm new to this forum and this is my first time applying. I know my stats ain't that competitive compared to others on here but I am extremely positive I will get in based on my references, extracurriculars, and most of all my personal statement, which I believe is very very strong. Took me a month to write and I believe will stand out. Hope they take into consideration everything. My low grades and GPA are due to certain life circumstances which I can't explain on here but only the commitees know. Lol but fingers crossed, will send in my applications as soon as I take my GRE. Really hope I score high to compensate my Low GPA.

P.S: The more reason why I applied at schools which fulfill my requirements (also goes to those with similar stats like me, do some research, look at the average GPA of the last entry class, their minimums and trust me you might have a chance) my first choice is Shenandoah though. Hope I get in. God willing!

Good luck everyone.

I wouldn't apply anywhere where you haven't at least met the minimum GPA requirements. I don't know about the others, but Emory is in my state and very competitive and require a GPA of 3.0 as the minimum. It would save you over 100 dollars to leave them off your list, including the PTCAS and supplemental app fee. I have a feeling they use a system to sort out applicants not meeting their minimums.

Which schools did you apply to? And what are your GRE scores?
Like I said, my GRE is nothing to write home about... v-150 q-155 aw-4.0

I applied to 10 schools. I got invitations to interview at Georgia Regents, Midwestern (Glendale and Downers Grove), Creighton, Bellarmine, UNE and the rest of the schools I applied to did not require an interview.

I'm curious, why did you decide to apply to GRU? After a little stalking I see you're from out of state, and it seems GRU has quite a bit of out of state students applying. I thought they were a state school though, am I wrong on this? To be honest, before I had moved to Georgia I didn't know anything about GRU, does their DPT program have a good reputation in other states?

Georgia Regents does select in-state applicants with preference from what I have heard. The reason I chose to apply to GRU is rather unorthodox. My wife and I are both applying to graduate school (her to Dental School). We obviously want to be together for grad school, so we had to narrow our search to schools that have DPT and DDS programs. GRU is a great school in an awesome are that has both of our programs; that was my main reason for applying there. If you are a Georgia resident you should have a VERY high chance of acceptance since you already have an interview. The odds are stacked against me and that is why I chose to push their interview back for another school that does not have a resedence preferance.

Good luck everyone.

Do you meet the stated minimums at all of those schools? If you do not meet the minimums, do NOT apply this cycle. You must understand that generally, your application is checked when it arrives at the school to ensure all minimums are met (GPA, GRE, minimum hours, any courses that had to be done to apply). If ANY of the required minimums aren't met, your application is discarded and you will receive a "rejected" letter when the mass mailing goes out. The admissions committee will NOT read your references, personal statement or look at your extracurriculars. Essentially, they won't even get your application since you didn't meet the minimums in the first place.

I share this with you because I've been in your shoes. I would venture I had excellent and distinct personal statements, references and extracurriculars. But that doesn't matter if no one reads them. After talking to schools extensively, I learned more about the admissions process and how/why being strong in some areas won't balance out GPA/GRE. In fact, the school's accreditation is tied to their minimum admissions requirements which is also why they cannot overlook those.

Save yourself the time and money, pull up your GPA and apply next year. It will make all the difference.
