GPA's, GRE's, XTRA's, ACCEPTANCES

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey! I play for the UM women's club team (we played you guys like 3 weeks ago) and I'm applying to all the same schools as you! Let me know how everything goes and good luck!

That's awesome! I actually was only on the team for my first two years then life got hectic so I decided to leave but yes will do! Same with you! Good luck and all!!🙂

Your GPA is really good given your major. I would be really surprised if you don't get a lot of interviews. Your GRE is kind of low but many of the schools I don't feel put a ton of emphasis on it. My only suggestion would be to add some more observation hours as yours are limited. Most schools that I looked at suggest at least 100 so they know you are confident that you are in the right field. Do the schools you applied to have a set requirement for hours? My GPA is close to yours and my GRE was only slightly higher as well and I have interviews at 4/9 schools I applied to within the next month AND they were my reach schools. Be confident. You didn't submit at the last minute either which should work in your benefit.
Do you know whether schools like northwestern, ohio state or ohio u strongly emphasize GRE scores? Im pretty worried about that holding my chances back of getting in. I emailed OSU and they said they don't have a minimum, but if i took it again and scored better it MAY help my chances of getting in. Idk how northwestern is though

How long on average do NOVA, Emory, UNF, UCF, Lynchburg, and Berneau take to review and send decisions after they receive your application

I took my GRE once, received a 152 V, 158 Q, 4.0 Writing. 3.76 Overall GPA.
I was accepted at Northwestern about 2-3 weeks after they received my application. I cannot really say they don't emphasize it but if you have much more to offer than a standardized test score they place more emphasis on that. I was concerned about my score as well but received more than I expected. You seem like you have a competitive application and from my research it looked like a 300 minimum combination score was good, which you have. I would keep researching and see if retaking it is worth your money and time, I went through the same process myself. I literally looked into everything I could, even contacting current students. Use your resources and weigh your options.
I wish you the best of luck!

Here is the information that I got from Lynchburg: "We are pretty quick once applications are submitted; generally less than 2-3 weeks before we make some sort of decision. Decisions at this point are usually one of the following: Accept, Deny, Hold for future review. The last category is the most common category. Holding students allows us to get updated information or further assess the applicant pool before making a final decision. "

Hope that helps!

Congrats! What questions did they ask at your interview if you don't mind me asking? I have my first interview coming up in a few weeks and I'm really nervous, so I'm trying to prepare early!

Anybody who applied to Shenondah gotten an email yet saying they recieved your PTCAS?
Yes, and I think several of us have gotten invites for the 11/21 and 22 interview dates.

Just wondering, when you get accepted and have to put in a deposit (nonrefundable) are you allowed to drop your spot later on if you get a better offer?

Just wondering, when you get accepted and have to put in a deposit (nonrefundable) are you allowed to drop your spot later on if you get a better offer?
I wonder this, too...I only applied to 2 places, but the deadline for one is significantly after the other. I'm also guessing we get a short window to decide if we want to go or not after an offer. I will definitely accept the first if I get it. f I am lucky and get into both, that would be awkward.

I'm also wondering...about how long from the interview do they generally let you know if you get in? I'm going on a Shenandoah interview and wonder how long they take to decide after that point....

Just wondering, when you get accepted and have to put in a deposit (nonrefundable) are you allowed to drop your spot later on if you get a better offer?

Yep! Unfortunately you would lose your deposit since it's nonrefundable, but you can always drop your spot after you accept an offer.

Careful though - because if you deposit at both schools, they can rescind your offer if they find out. Be sure to communicate to your schools if you plan on putting down two deposits.
Okay I was just wondering because I just got accepted into one school but wanted to keep my options open since I won't be hearing back from the other schools until January or February

Can the schools see if you have been accepted to more than one program? I find that strange.

Some schools do that, so people don't hold multiple spots. You will have to email the school and make sure that it is okay.

My interview was pretty relaxed and conversational for the most part... But as far as specific questions go, I'd be ready to answer for your strengths/weaknesses and why you are interested in that school in particular. Also, I was asked about my job, extra-curriculars, hobbies, and study habits. There was one question in particular that I wasn't ready for... "Give an example of a time you caused a problem for others, and how did you fix it?" Overall my interview experience was great despite the fact that I was super nervous for it!
I hope I helped a little! Best of luck!

Wow I wouldn't be ready for that question either, that is a tough one! Thanks for the help and good luck with the rest of your schools you applied to!

I feel like my Pre-Req GPA is killing me. I got C's in Chem 1/Chem 2 and A's/B's in everything else. I was advised not to retake the Chemistry courses by my pre-pt advisor. When I first came to college I was more focused on racing and I spent a lot (I mean A LOT) of time away from school. The race shop I work at is 140 miles from campus and I've been there or on the road racing around 45 weeks/year for the entire time I've been in college. Obviously my grades suffered but I really kicked it in gear my last few semesters and have done fairly well.

I'm hoping the admissions committees will see that improvement and look over my Pre-Req GPA. My cumulative (3.56) isn't terrible and will likely go up a little after this semester, but I feel like if I would have focused more on school my first couple years I could be at a 3.8-3.9. I know GPA isn't everything, so I'm hoping my GRE and unique/heavily involved EC's will help me out.

What do you guys think?

The schools you applied to might be a stretch with that prereq GPA. Your GRE is good but not extrodinary. What will help you was them seeing the increase in effort over your last 60 hours. Good luck

You can only put down another deposit after you inform the first school that you no longer plan on attending though, right?
No. I had deposits down at 2 different schools for about a month while I tried to make a decision. When I finally decided, I did tell the school so they could give my spot to the next person on the list.

mlb12c, even though most schools I'm applying to (actually I think all of them) don't formally recognize the last 60 hours as part of their admissions process/decision, do you think they'll take notice of the improvement I've made over the course of my undergraduate career?

I definitely do think so! I feel most schools look at grade trends and will likely see you've improved vastly
