GPA's, GRE's, XTRA's, ACCEPTANCES

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am just starting to fill out the PTCAS, but here is where I stand so far:

Major: Biology, GWU (2003 grad)
Overall GPA:3.67
Prereq GPA: about the same as overall
GRE: 530V, 670Q, still waiting on AW

Observation hours:Will have close to 100 by the end of the month and even more by the end of the summer.

Extracurriculars:As you can see, I am a non-trad student and I had plenty of extracurriculars when I was in undergrad. Since the-I have worked for the Red Cross for 2.5 years (with other jobs prior to that), a member of the Family Readiness Group for my husband's Army Reserve Unit, I have played rugby on and off and I just joined the PTA at my daughter's school. I have 2 kids that take up most of my free time.

Applying to: GWU, Marymount, University of Maryland-Baltimore, Shennandoah, Columbia, possibly others

My concern is that, although I have wanted to be a PT for a while, with my husband being active duty Army until recently and having 2 kids at home I wasn't able to begin my observation hours until this past June. I don't want schools to think that I just waited until the last minute and crammed them in. I still have A&P II to take this fall and I feel like I am lacking in extracurriculars. Can I include my undergrad extracurriculars on my application? Any thoughts?

The schools won't mind about the observation hours taken this past June. I took my observation hours around the same time also, up until August before sending in my applications the last week of that month. As long as you've accumulated a decent and reasonable amount of hours. However, it is the quality of the observations that really matter, and this will be evident in your letters of recommendations and/or interest letter.

Having one or two prerequisites still incomplete after sending in applications is just fine. Just make sure you do well in them and send in transcripts after every semester. Also, check with the schools if they will allow incomplete prereqs (and how many) after sending in applications, as this varies among schools.

I don't think there's any harm with adding in your undergrad extracurriculars. Just ensure you specify when.

Best of luck!

Kcrat, when did your schools send your transcripts/when did ptcas receive them? Mine were sent out July 8th, and ptcas has not verified that they received them yet....I'm just wondering why it is taking so long.

Rider received my transcript request on July 7th and sent my transcripts out on July 8th. PTCAS just verified that they received it from them today actually.

Marymount had not yet sent my transcript out when I talked to them last on July 11th.

And I requested my transcript from George Mason (where I took ONE class in the summer of 2005 to get ahead) on July 11th and haven't talked to them since, so I don't know what's up with them yet.

I guess it takes them a while...I soooo hate the waiting game though. Ugh.

Hi Everyone!

I am new to the forum and I wanted to get some advice on where I stand as an applicant. My stats are pretty average so I need to bulk up my application. I definitely need inpatient hours. I plan on doing them this fall. I also took several of my prereqs at a community college so I hope that does not alter my chances.

Major: Exercise Science and Psychology
Overall GPA: 3.4
Pre-Req GPA: 3.8
GRE: 450V, 640Q, 400V, 660Q
Observation hours: >1200 hours in outpatient setting working with specialists in geriatrics, pediatrics, and orthopedics.
>100 hours in a wellness center that specializes in PT

Any advice anyone can give me would be great!! I hope I can help you out as well. Thanks in advance!

Hey everyone!

I'm new to the forum too and would like some advice as well. I've learned so much from this forum already! Thanks in advance.

I had a pretty rough time in college hence my crappy GPAs but I REALLY want to apply PT school this summer. I am currently taking Medical Terminology and plan on retaking Chem 1 along with speech and either microbiology or human development for the first time next semester. For spring spring semester I will be retaking Chem 2 with exercise physiology, and either microbiology or human development (whichever course i don't take in the fall of 2011).

I also plan on taking the GRE some time in october too.

Going to retake one class for my pre req- and try to substitute another with harder course, Ive always been told to think positive, that the application doesn't only focus on just grades and GRE scores. I'm banking on my personal statement, my volunteering hours and my accomplishments. I just can't seem to break a 1000 on my GRE (which I despise) 😡 I'm scared my application won't be strong enough to compete, and hope that I can get an interview because I know once I'm in that room, Im confident that there is no way I'll get rejected. I'm dedicated to this, just scared I won't get in? What are my chances!?!?!?

Volunteer/Observation hours: About 150 right now
Applying to: Wash U-STL, NAU, KU, Midwestern-Glendale, U of Washington, Pacific University, maybe a few others.

I am pretty low on the observation hours but I work full time and don't have much opportunity. Also, I am trying to decided whether or not to re-take the GRE. Does anyone know if they take the highest score for each section if you take it multiple times?

I can tell you from my own experience that Pacific University places a lot of emphasis on observation hours/hours in the field. I also work full time, but I volunteered steadily for two years. Pacific is the only school I was rejected from and too few hours is the reason they stated in the rejection letter.

As far as your GRE, that is a solid score. Do not retake it. You are already way above the curve. Good luck!

I wanted to apply this summer/fall but after taking my GRE, I decided not to and wait until next year. I do plan on taking the GRE again, however, the format has changed and I was wondering if it would matter or have any affect at all?
If you are waiting to apply next year, I would guess all schools would take the new GRE. The new format, only having glanced at it, seems to be a better test. It seems to be more sentence completion rather than analogies on the verbal.

I have a question for extra currics on the PTCAS, since I'm a career changer (i graduated from undergrad in 03) is it worth putting that I am on an organized women's ice hockey team? It's more than a beer league, but it's not professional or anything like that. Thoughts?

I would put the hockey team. It shows that you're an athlete, and it is something organized (unlike my hiking trips, for example... 🙂).

I would definitely put it. I am a career changer as well (graduated in 03 too) and I put the time I have spent playing on an organized women's rugby team.

I'm curious as to how much emphasis is placed on direct observation hours. I've worked a summer camp for kids with disabilities for the past two summers with direct hands on interaction with the children. It took place 7 weeks at a time and definitely had some experience. I was just curious if you would think that programs will disregard my lack of hours if I have the experience, just not the official hours.

Hopefully I can serve proof positive as an example that: having a lower undergrad GPA, completely changing careers after almost 20 years, and taking all my pre-reqs at a community college are not barriers for entry to PT school.
As long as you are able to articulate your commitment and passion to become a physical therapist, and can back it up with a recent track record of solid achievements and meaningful recommendations, you have a chance in this wonderful and fulfilling field.
Good luck - hope to read more success stories here!

Has anyone on here taken the Revised GRE? I got ranges for my scores when I finished taking the test but I have no idea how they're interpreted on the new scale...

SCENEOFCRIME; They gave me the same info...range for V and Q.........we just have to wait it out until Nov when the scores are released.......they need enough to build an average for scores for this cycle.

:xf: Here goes nothing!! I changed my major my junior year and have been completely in love with Physical Therapy ever since. I had a rough semester my first semester of Junior year when I took 4 pre requisite courses and I was not fully aware of the challenges that come with each of them. However, that was a huge learning experience and I feel like it will help me understand the challenges and the major course load that PT school will offer. I am beginning to freak out and I hope and pray that I get accepted somewhere!! I would be crushed if I don't!! Best of luck everyone!!

Hey everyone, I am also playing the waiting game, but just heard back from UNE yesterday that I got an interview! I was wondering if generally they offer a lot more interviews than they have spots for? Not exactly sure how that works....Also does anyone have any helpful tips for preparing for interviews and what types of questions to be expecting?

The GPA would be higher, but my first semester freshman year was rocky. So, since I've had nearly a 4.0 every semester since then, I am hoping that will be taken into consideration when looking at my transcript.

Um... why on earth do you think you'd be a long shot anywhere? Your stats are excellent, definitely within striking range at most schools, I would think. 🙂

Good luck!

Thanks! I appreciate it! I'm not too picky, so as long as I can get in somewhere!

I'm not too picky, so as long as I can get in somewhere!

With your stats, I wouldn't be surprised if you end up with the "high-class problem" of having to decide which school to choose. 😉

But I totally understand not feeling sure.... I also have some truly regrettable grades from my undergrad years.... None of them are for prereq classes or anything related to PT, so hopefully they won't count for much. :xf:

And yes, this wait is torture, but the upside for me is that I end up channeling all the nervous energy into studying for classes this semester!

Congrats, letoile! That's awesome! 🙂

Are you at Scripps in Claremont, CA? I volunteered this summer with a girl who goes to Pitzer.

Thanks optionpaloma! I graduated last year but, yes, Scripps in Claremont, CA. Several of my really good friends went to Pitzer! I miss the Claremont Colleges so much! I always get super excited when people know what/where Scripps is, haha.
