I am just starting to fill out the PTCAS, but here is where I stand so far:
Major: Biology, GWU (2003 grad)
Overall GPA:3.67
Prereq GPA: about the same as overall
GRE: 530V, 670Q, still waiting on AW
Observation hours:Will have close to 100 by the end of the month and even more by the end of the summer.
Extracurriculars:As you can see, I am a non-trad student and I had plenty of extracurriculars when I was in undergrad. Since the-I have worked for the Red Cross for 2.5 years (with other jobs prior to that), a member of the Family Readiness Group for my husband's Army Reserve Unit, I have played rugby on and off and I just joined the PTA at my daughter's school. I have 2 kids that take up most of my free time.
Applying to: GWU, Marymount, University of Maryland-Baltimore, Shennandoah, Columbia, possibly others
My concern is that, although I have wanted to be a PT for a while, with my husband being active duty Army until recently and having 2 kids at home I wasn't able to begin my observation hours until this past June. I don't want schools to think that I just waited until the last minute and crammed them in. I still have A&P II to take this fall and I feel like I am lacking in extracurriculars. Can I include my undergrad extracurriculars on my application? Any thoughts?
The schools won't mind about the observation hours taken this past June. I took my observation hours around the same time also, up until August before sending in my applications the last week of that month. As long as you've accumulated a decent and reasonable amount of hours. However, it is the quality of the observations that really matter, and this will be evident in your letters of recommendations and/or interest letter.
Having one or two prerequisites still incomplete after sending in applications is just fine. Just make sure you do well in them and send in transcripts after every semester. Also, check with the schools if they will allow incomplete prereqs (and how many) after sending in applications, as this varies among schools.
I don't think there's any harm with adding in your undergrad extracurriculars. Just ensure you specify when.
Best of luck!
