University: Kenyon College, 2011

Applied: Washington University, SUNY Upstate, Sage Colleges, Husson, Touro U. in Nevada, Nova SE (hybrid & Ft. Lauderdale), & maybe Utica (if I can finally get 6 more inpatient hours by the deadline in January-- they require 10)
Acceptances: N/A
Rejections: N/A
Waitlisted: Touro
Interviews: SUNY Upstate

I applied really late in the cycle (didn't take the GRE until mid-November and my last recommendation didn't come in until December 1st), and still have some prerequisites to finish up in the spring semester. I just figured out that I wanted to go the PT route in July (previously was pursuing nursing), so I got kind of a late start on getting everything done. At the time I was working two jobs (one part-time and one full-time) and going to school, so it was tough to get the ball rolling. Hopefully this will work out okay, but even if it doesn't I have no problem applying again next cycle.

I guess I was a little paranoid about not getting accepted to any school. I had a lot of pre-reqs remaining and a low AW score. I actually planned on applying to a total of 15 schools but ended up not applying to 4 schools once I got accepted to Nova. In the end though, better safe than sorry.

I also have a really strong statement of purpose that I spent almost a month crafting and developing. It speaks to why PT and how my future as a physical therapist can help with the healthcare crisis that we are currently and will most definitely still be experiencing in the future. I tied in my Masters degree and explained why I chose to study that topic and how it is directly applicable to my pursuits of practicing Physical Therapy.

I am another unique case and wanted to give hope to other non-traditionals in this application process. It CAN be done. I did spend over three years trying to fix my grades from undergrad while also trying to make myself a uniquely competitive applicant with a Masters Degree in a relevant field. I have tremendous passion for PT and can't wait to start my studies next year wherever I do end up.

Bummer! I was waitlisted at Arcadia last year, but received the notification in the late spring. I was hoping I'd have better luck this time around, but if they've already sent out acceptance invites in December, my chances have dropped significantly.

I have been accepted to two schools, but I have to give one of them my decision in the next week which is before I will be hearing back from 7 other schools (3 of which) I would rather attend.

If I send in a deposit and accept an offer of admission, does that ever get back to other programs or to PTCAS in a way that is going to interfere with my pending applications?

I know it isn't a honest or cheap thing to do ($500 deposit to reserve my seat), but I can't risk turning down both offers on the chance that I'm going to get a better option.

Has anyone done this? Accepted an offer to safety school while they waited for other replies to come in? Thoughts?

Hello! Sending in a deposit and accepting an offer of admission should not get back to other programs or to PTCAS and in turn effect pending applications that you have with other programs at this juncture. However, a search of PTCAS FAQ states this...

Q: Does one program know whether I applied to or have been accepted by other programs in PTCAS?

A: Beginning in early spring 2014, any designated PTCAS program that offers you admission will know how many offers of admission you have received from and accepted at other PTCAS institutions. Programs will not know how many applications you have submitted, to which programs you have submitted them, or any other admissions decisions made by other PT programs at that time. After the completion of the 2013-14 admissions cycle in fall 2014, programs will be able to view the other programs designated by their applicants and the final admission decision reported by each competing institution in PTCAS.

I copied and pasted this directly from PTCAS. Based on this understanding, again I believe that sending in a deposit and accepting an offer of admission should not get back to other programs or to PTCAS at this time. However, it seems that moving forward, PTCAS programs will have access to some information as stated in the answer above.

I would definitely put down a deposit on your choice out of the two schools that have accepted you because as you stated you don't want to run the risk of not getting into a program altogether. Personally, I put down a deposit on a safety school when I was accepted to their program. I ended up losing the deposit because later on I was accepted into one of my top choices. The same situation may happen with you, but I would definitely secure a seat to ensure that you will be attending a physical therapy school at the end of the day. Best of luck to you!
