UNTHSC and UT Southwestern: don't require hours

UTMB, TTU, ASU, UMHB, TUN, Marymount, and Hampton: require x amount of hours but doesn't specify from what setting; but must be acquired from 2 different settings.

I have lurked on this thread long before I even applied to PT school. It helped me so much with the process. I am one of those people with low stats and I wanted to share my info in hopes that it will encourage someone who has a passion for PT and is willing to work their butt off to get into PT school. If you really want it, you will work for it!
My freshman and sophomore years sucked, but I got my act together and made up in my mind that I would get into PT school. Today, I received my acceptance into my first choice school! God is so good. 🙂

I've been lurking these forums, gleaning advice and comparing stats while obsessing over my PT applications for well over a year now, and wanted to add to the pool now that the process is over. Like so many others, I was told from the beginning how competitive entrance into a PT program is, and operated on the assumption that every school would receive 1000+ applications, and ultimately choose 30-60 from that pool. This caused me a lot of stress that my 'stats' weren't competitive. Because of this, I wanted to contribute my 'story' to show to others, that it can be done; to be confident, and make your choices carefully.

Ultimately, I believe that having a clear understanding of who I am, why I feel PT is my calling, and having my admissions essays proofread and corrected by several of my professors, advisors, and human resources professionals helped get me invited to interviews. My confidence gained through much practice at interviewing and 'selling myself' got me invited to both schools I chose to interview at. I was fully prepared to attend all of the above listed interviews had I not been accepted to the two I did interview with.
For anyone that feels that your grades and GRE are not 'stand-out' good, as mine aren't; take heart. Do your best academically and practice to present your best qualities well, and schools will take you seriously.

When I did observation hours with her she told me not to because it is a Freshmen entry program and they only accept three students outside of the program each year. It is also 5 minutes from my undergrad and I would like a different scenery for grad school and required exercise physiology which I did not take. So for me it was not worth it.

I applied ED to Armstrong Atlantic State University, I am currently waiting to hear back for the USA January class. I got rejected from 7 schools last cycle (2 interviews). Since then I have reported 18 hours of A's on my application and racked up a year of experience at a clinic. If I do not get into AASU, then I will be applying to Emory, North GA, Mercer, GA State, Georgia Regents, UK, UF, MUSC. I want to come up with at least 3 more. How much do I need to improve my application?

Acceptances: Armstrong Atlantic State University, University of St. Augustine

If you want my opinion on where to attend school, just know that public in-state tuition will end up better than private or out of state. Yes, where you attend DPT school does matter, having 150 K in loans will cripple you for a huge portion of your life. I was patient (worked for over a year as a tech) and it payed off tremendously in the long run.

Hey when did Chatham receive your app? I applied there as well and am hoping for an interview..my stats are basically identical to yours!

Good luck!! They sent an email August 22 saying they had received it (I believe this was the same day my app was verified on PTCAS), September 20 they said that everything had been received and it was being reviewed, and then yesterday I got an interview invite via email.

So, I'm new to this website... I'm kind of nervous because I still have two pre req classes withstanding (Physiology and Physics II) that I'm enrolled in now... Does that hurt my chances of getting into some schools?? Do my stats look good enough to get into one of these schools?? I had my Missouri State interview last weekend, and I'm not sure I did the best at it.. How heavily are interviews weighed? I was very nervous so I'm not sure what they thought of me. Also, if anyone has had history with these programs and know how the interviews are set up I would love to know.
Your stats are very good. Based on that, I wouldn't worry about the 2 prereqs you are currently enrolled in. Because of your established GPA, you will likely get A's in those classes right? So just tell them that in the interview. Be confident. Good luck.

@dropping101 did you get an email today from LIU-Brooklyn? I got a super vague email about an open house...
Yo do you like UNE or LIU Brooklyn more? I'm looking at the schools and it seems that they cost the same, but LIU has a lower graduation rate (85% compared to 94%). LIU looks like it has nicer facilities though

UNE all the way for me. The grad rate is a big difference for me. Also, I would prefer Portland to Brooklyn for grad school. I'm not a huge NYC guy (I know, I know Brooklyn technically isn't NYC but still), kinda too big for me. I much prefer New England. NYC is great and has a ton of opportunities, but given the choice I think I would be exponentially more comfortable in Portland. Just personal preference. As someone from Upstate NY, I actually have a lot more in common with New Englanders than my downstate counterparts.

To be honest, I have not heard much at all about LIU Brooklyn. On the other hand, I have heard a ton of positive things about UNE.

Might be a moot point anyways though; I did not get a call for an interview today. Just a vague email about an open house. 😵

I got the call but never recieved a confirmation email which worries me. I got an interview on the 20th!

Don't worry dude. It wasn't a confirmation email, just some info about an open house. Was not offered an interview. Yet? Maybe? Hopefully?

yeah man I think I'm on the same boat, that graduation rate worries me. Plus I'm more of a small town person as well. But I think I'll still interview there just to be safe. Plus it's like a mini vacation while I'm still in school hahaha. I'm sure you'll get a call bro, you've been 100% so far!

Brooklyn is one of NYC's five boroughs, actually it is the most populous of the five. You can say Brooklyn IS NYC for the most part. I'm from the area so I can't help myself. Good luck!

That being said, Portland all day. You have to remember that the cost of living in Brooklyn is not going to be pretty. You can live as meager as you want, there are still unexpected costs associated with life and these will always be greater in NYC than Portland, ME. But hey, if you are fortunate enough to not have money as an issue then go for your true preference.

I'm applying this cycle:

University: University of Arizona
Major: BS in Psychology and a minor in Pre-Health Studies
Overall GPA: 3.9
Pre-Req GPA: ~3.74ish depending on the classes.
GRE: 164 Verbal, 156 Quantitative, 5.0 Analytical Writing

Observation hours: 111 hours observing in a pediatric outpatient therapies clinic. My observation hours are probably the weakest part of my application as I was required to commit for at least 100 hours to the peds clinic, and then I had to leave for Seoul. I've been trying to find more observation hours here, but it's proving hard with working full time 9-5 (and PTs also working 9-5). I am hoping that my hundreds of hours of volunteering in hospitals helps in this area, as I've definitely come to learn what it's like to work with patients and medical professions in all areas.
Work Experience: I worked on-campus part time during a few of my semesters in undergrad. Currently a public school teacher with the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education.
Extra Curricular: I've volunteered/interned for a few hundred hours at various hospitals, including homeless departments, general hospital wards, and an emergency department with a county prison contract, all serving under-served populations (I used to want to go to med school). I've also served as a biology lab preceptor and was a member of the Muralcles service club. I also studied abroad at the National University of Singapore.

Applying to (likely): University of Washington, Northern Arizona University, Northwestern University, UPitt, UIC, Temple University, Drexel University, George Washington University...

(I'm applying to many schools partly because I'm too thorough for my own good, and partly because I don't know what problems may arise with apply from overseas later down the road. I do need to include a few more safety schools, though).

UPDATE (Acceptances):

Interviews: Univeristy of Delaware, Drexel University
Rejections: N/A
Acceptances: University of Delaware [09/25], Drexel University [09/25]

... 2 acceptances over the same night, and one immediately following a follow-up interivew. Wow

University: University of Florida
Major: Industrial & Systems Engineering (graduated in 2007, this is a career change for me!)
PTCAS Overall GPA: 3.28
PTCAS Pre-Req GPA: 3.75
Post-bacc GPA: 4.0
GRE: 161 V / 162 Q / 5.0 AW

Extra-Curric: I'm non-trad, so I agree that there's not a ton of extra time with a full-time job, taking pre-reqs, and getting in observation hours. I'm on the board of a non-profit that works with orphanages in Haiti, and I've also done some occasional volunteering with Special Olympics

Volunteer: Right now, I have about 60 Outpatient, and about 10 Inpatient. That should continue to grow, and I'm hoping to have at least 100 by the time I apply, and even more after that.

My GPA is on the lower side, but all of my lower grades were in specialized engineering classes (helloooo Thermodynamics!) so hopefully they won't have as much of an impact on my chances of getting into PT schools.

I am going to apply to Nova Southeastern, Miami, Maryland, GWU, Marymount, and Arcadia. Hopefully that casts a wide enough net and I'll get in at one of them!

New to posting but I've been reading everyone's stats for a while now, and there are so many great success stories. I'm hoping I'll be one of them.

University: Columbia University (class of 2014)
Major: Visual arts (pre-med/ biology concentration)
PTCAS overall GPA: 3.24
PTCAS prerequisite GPA: 2.92 (higher depending on program)
Upper division course GPA: 3.36
GRE: 160 V (84%)/ 157 Q (68%)/4.0 W (56%)

Extra-Curric: President of dance troupe, Arts relations chair for black students group consortium, head visual arts teacher for after school program, tutor for nonprofit organization.

Observation: 200+ in 2 different outpatient clinics

Applying: LIU, Columbia, Touro-manhattan (all mailed 9/30) ....I'm narrowing down 3 or 4 additional programs to apply to in order to increase my chances of getting accepted.

I'm reeeeeeally nervous about my low GPA, and I wish I had the funds to apply to like 15 schools...but I don't lol. So I'm going to try to look into schools that don't solely rely on PTCAS prereq GPAs.

I'm hoping my GRE and essays will at least give me a chance to get interviews!

First time posting in one of these...

University: BFA from university of Cincinnati, post bacc from Metro State University of Denver
Major: dance performance (bunhead through and through!)
PTCAS Overall gpa: 3.97
PTCAS prereq gpa: 4.00
GRE: 164 verbal, 159 quantitative, 4.0 written

Extra curric: working as a massage therapist and rigorously perusing prereq coursework has not left much extra time for extra activities, but I've been an anatomy TA and a cadaver lab TA

Observation: ~70 hrs in inpatient, outpatient, school, home health, and sub-acute settings

Applying: Regis and a University of Colorado

Regis doesn't even take into account observation hours and CU doesn't have as high a requirement as other schools so I aimed to get a diverse array of settings rather than lots of overall hours.

I really don't want to leave Colorado, so I am hoping that I can have my cake and eat it too by getting in on my first try!

Just applied this cycle! Confident, but anxious...

University: University of Indianapolis
Major: Psychology/Pre-PT concentration
(haven't recieved PTCAS GPAs yet, these are from my transcript)
PTCAS Overall gpa: 3.61
PTCAS prereq gpa: 3.7
GRE: 156 verbal, 154 quantitative, 4.5 written

Extra curric: Research with the biology department involving pancreatic cancer cells. Employed as a caregiver for a special needs client with CP where I aid him in walking, lifting, and stretching (very PT-related).

Observation: ~30 hours inpatient, ~20 hours outpatient

Applied:
University of Indianapolis
IUPUI
Belmont University
Bellarmine University
Ohio State University
Samuel Merritt University
University of Illinois at Chicago
University of Tennessee at Chattanooga
University of Tennessee Health Science Center
Western Carolina University
Youngstown State University

And now I play the waiting game...

Congrats!!! Wow... you applied to about the same amount of schools as me. Just curious, when did you send your applications?
