GPA's, GRE's, XTRA's, ACCEPTANCES

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Based on my impression of the school and speaking with faculty, GPA isn’t weighted nearly as much as your response to questions.

Look at all of your statements through the lens of “does this make me excited for this person to enter the field? Is this person just saying the cookie cutter response of “I hurt myself or know someone who is hurt and I want to help”?”

One of the faculty exclaimed that “we HATE cookie cutter responses”. Let me know if you got any more Qs.

how much time do you send write the response?

Trying to spread applications all over. I had a very rocky start to college and but finished my last 3 semesters with a 3.6+ gpa. Hoping strength in all other aspects of my application can overcome my very low cumulative gpa. Looking for any advice from students who have been admitted with similar gpas and which schools to target with my stats!!!

I’m curious - why did you decline your interview to Delaware? It’s such a great school.

After doing more research, I decided that I didn't think I would be a good fit for their accelerated program. You're right though, it's a really prestigious program. I'm honored to have received an interview in the first place from them.

October 22! when’s your application review call?

It’s not till Nov. 6 :/ because one of the advisors told me I should schedule the call after October since that’s when they will be reviewing Summer start applications.

Be honest!!

Hey guys! I’m applying to schools now. I really really wanna go to USF, but if I’m honest, I don’t think I’ll get in :/ I just moved to Florida recently too. I put my new Florida address in PTCAS and indicated that I lived here for less than a year. I’d be evaluated as an out of state until I’m a resident, right? Wish that wasn’t the case.. that’ll further lower my chances.

School - Rutgers University (2015)

Degree: Cum Laude B.S. in Clinical lab science: Am able to do any kind of lab work i.e. hematology, blood bank, microbiology, chemistry, immunology, virology etc. very science based

PTCAS Gpa - 3.5 - was 3.6 on my college transcript 🙁

GRE - Q148 V152 AW4.0 - Average imo :/

Volunteer hours - ~300 in 3 sites, 100 each, including: 1 skilled nursing facility, 1 Freestanding clinic, 1 other freestanding clinic specializing in woman’s health

LOR - 2 from PTs and 1 from my supervisor at my previous job

Experience: work in a gigantic hospital lab for 3 years. No patient contact however :/

Applying to USF, FIU, UCF, Gannon university Ruskin, nova southeastern Tampa and maybe a few more

Rejected: USF ED -there’s still hope!!

What do you think are my chances?

Also does UCF absolutely need a LOR from a professor?? I haven’t kept in contact with any and it’s been almost 5 years -_-

It has been a long journey before I finally post here. I am not a traditional student, I joined the military after 1 semester of college back in 2008 and went back to school in 2014.

Non-traditional student here, took a while for me to find out about PT but am ecstatic to start on this new journey. My stats are definitely not the greatest, but I tried to emphasize my background and experiences as much as I could in my essay and interviews (I worked in various fields before PT, unconventional reasons to pursue PT vs. other healthcare fields, etc). I think application committees value applicants with varied backgrounds with interesting stories that speak beyond the text.

I just wanted to share my timeline for Baylor for anyone interested, as I heard back MUCH sooner than I had expected: 9/23 - submitted PTCAS to Baylor; 9/29 - interview invitation; 10/6 - phone call of acceptance; 10/7 formally accepted. Rolling admissions begin in January and are done in 2 cycles (Jan-May, July-Oct). I am thinking that I heard back quickly due to the start date being in January 2020 - only 2 months away!

Hybrid programs like Baylor and South were not even on my radar until early September as I was finalizing my PTCAS applications. I stumbled upon them somehow and, after extensive research and considerations, placed them on the top of my list of schools I wanted to attend. They definitely aren't for everyone, and I completely understand the reservations that come with blended-learning programs. For me, here are some of the reasons why I chose Baylor specifically: 2-year accelerated program, residency programs encouraged/streamlined after graduation, can stay in NC instead of moving to Texas, high licensure pass rates, maintains hands-on portion of PT (lab immersions still total around 80-90 days) connections for clinical education in my state, and great faculty from around the country. I recently got engaged and am getting married soon, and Baylor offers the most flexibility for me during this part of my life. So, so excited. I would be happy to answer any questions, good luck to everyone!

My main issue is that I only have credit for "Intro to A&P I & II" instead of regular old A&P, and I didn't realize this was the case until pretty recently (so too late to take two semesters of it) bc I have all the other prereqs for sure. This is what is holding me back from applying to more schools although I still have some time, I've just been emailing to ask if they take my intro A&P classes. 🙁 Does anyone know about any schools that are chill about A&P prereqs since they have to basically retake those courses as part of the program anyway?

I am also just wondering if anyone else has experience this issue and what they did or what they'd recommend.
So did you take two semesters of Intro to A&P, or was it just one semester? Did they have lab? How many credit hours did the course count for?

Ultimately, I think what they’re looking for is the amount of credit hours you fulfill, and whether or not you have taken a lab with it.

How long did it take you to hear about an interview after you applied?

I submitted my application 9/2 and got a phone call invitation for the interview on 9/16. The interview was on 9/27 and I was accepted 10/16 via email.
