I would have applied for more schools, but my GRE Verbal Score is horrendous. I was planning on retaking it in the summer, but fortunately I was accepted already and will enroll this Fall 2018! Don't lose hope! My stats are sub-par, but I was still accepted somewhere! Find schools that will see you as a well-rounded individual. Focus on schools that does not require, or depend solely on GPAs and GRE Scores. Make sure you have stellar LORs and an inspiring statement of purpose!

Hi all!
So I have to make a pretty difficult (but good difficult) decision. I was accepted into Chatham University’s MOT program and the University of Pittsburgh’s OTD program. I don’t know which school to choose and would LOVE some advice! I know Pitt is a highly ranked school but I also love Chatham’s more intimate program with only 30 students whereas Pitt has 60. I don’t know if I should deny a highly ranked school and get my doctorate out of the way or go to Chatham which is still an amazing program and receive my masters and decide later if I want to get my doctorate. Any advice would be appreciated - I’m all over the place!
Thanks :)

Hi! I was just wondering what your stats were and what things you did in undergrad because I'm planning on applying to Chatham and Pitt next application cycle. Also, congratulations!! :)

Hi! I was just wondering what your stats were and what things you did in undergrad because I'm planning on applying to Chatham and Pitt next application cycle. Also, congratulations!! :)
Hi!
I had a 3.66-3.7 overall GPA and a 3.9 pre-req gpa. I was a psychology major at Duquesne so I had to take anatomy and some other pre-reqs at CCAC before applying. I got a job as a rehab aide at UPMC Presby January of my senior year of college and took a gap year to apply and Get more experience. I personally think my experience is what helped me out the most. I also volunteered at UPMC mercy outpatient center and the children’s institute for extra experience. Good luck applying!! :)

I also got a 301 combined verbal and math on my GREs and a 5.5 on writing. I took them twice because I got a 294 the first time and I know pitt doesn’t accept many people with scores under 300 combined

Really?? I read from past posts that people received acceptances mid to late March but I’m not sure if that included acceptances denials and waitlist.

I have heard from people who have already gotten waitlisted and some people who were declined. But thats just word of mouth/rumors. So if we haven't heard anything, maybe that's a good sign! I have been waitlisted at Tennessee State, and I am waiting to hear from UTC and UTHSC in Memphis

I think I know what it is.... if you don’t have a gre score of 300 or above, you automatically get put on an alternate list (depending on your gre) or you get denied. I got put on an alternate list like not even a week after I applied because they said my gre was not a 300 or above and I emailed them letting them know I had my newest gre score coming to them. When they got it and saw that I made over a 300 they took me off and I am now apart of the priority review. That must have happed to the people you have talked to. But they did tell me after i got pulled of the waitlist to priority review that I would either be accepted or put back on the front of waitlist (not denied).

Hi everyone!

I was wondering, if anyone has any advice on USC vs. SJSU? Thanks!!

I think price of the program is the major difference between those two programs. SJSU is very affordable, usc is very pricey

Don't sweat it, you'll get in next year! I really fixed up my personal statement, got better LORs, and had a lot more job experience. I also retook 2 classes and my overall went from a 3.1 to a 3.3 since I graduated

Hi! I was just wondering if anyone got accepted to Chatham/ Pitt and could post their stats and advice to getting into the programs! Thank you!!

Hi! I received an interview for Chatham and got waitlisted but I got accepted to pitt and will be attending there! Here are my stats:

Major: Exercise Science at Slippery Rock University
Minor: gerontology as well as psychology
Overall GPA: 3.66 according to OTCAS
Prerequisite GPA: 3.8-3.9
My gre sucked honestly. I had a 295 and writing was 4.0.

I had 444 volunteer hours. 120 in inpatient and the rest in hand therapy.

I was very involved around campus:
Was a member of the First-Year Leadership Scholar Program freshmen year
Was a Psi Chi member (psychology honors society)
Member of Lambda Sigma (sophomore honors society) and had an e board position as ritual chair
Was a co-investigator of a research study on cognitive function
Started the Pre-Ot club at SRU and was the president of it
Was the student organizations and freshmen chair of SRU’s St. Jude event
I was a FYRST Seminar Peer Leader
I took American Sign Language classes
I made the deans list every semester And I am currently doing a cardiopulmonary rehabilitation internship!

My best advice is to GET INVOLVED and try to have as many leadership positions as you can! Also maintain a really good prerequisite GPA. On pitt’s OTD admission website it says they really look for applicants that show leadership and I think all of my experiences really helped me! Pitt was my #1 pick so I was more than ecstatic!

If you have any questions let me know! Good luck!!!

I've been lurking here ever since I discovered it a few months ago, and it's been so helpful, so I figured it was about time I actually contributed!

Here are my stats:
Major: Psychology
Minor: Gender and Women's Studies
Overall GPA: 3.66 (pre-req GPA closer to 3.8+ depending on what was counted)
GRE: 166 verbal, 163 quant, 5.0 writing (I used the official ETS GRE study books and honestly, it helped a ton)
Volunteer/Observation Hours: 80 hours in a hand/upper extremity rehab clinic, 5 hours at a pediatric clinic, and 20 hours volunteering with an Alzheimer's patient working on language/memory to help with independent living.

I actually graduated with my bachelor's back in 2010, so have a good amount of work experience under my belt across non-profits, healthcare, and technology companies as well.

Applied:
  • UW-Madison
  • University of Minnesota
  • NYU
  • Columbia
  • Tufts
  • San Jose State University
  • University of Puget Sound
  • D'Youville
  • Brunel University (and interviewed)
  • McGill University
Accepted:
  • University of Puget Sound
  • Tufts
  • NYU
  • D'Youville
  • Columbia
Waitlisted: UW-Madison

Even though I'm still waiting on answers from a few schools, Tufts has risen to the top as my first choice, so I'll most likely be putting my deposit in this week.

I was originally very worried about my relatively low number of volunteer hours compared to what I was reading about from everyone else, so I was really pleasantly surprised to receive as many acceptances as I did. In my personal statement I wrote a lot about how I felt my years of work experience really tied into my desire to be an OT and I think that worked in my favor!

Good luck everyone, and maybe I'll see some of you around Boston!

How long did you study for the GRE test? I’m using those books and the online powerplus practice tests too. My test is in 3 weeks

I started cracking open my books about two months before the exam, but didn't really buckle down to study until about 3-4 weeks before. I tried to do like a couple practice sections/chapters during the week (doing the practice questions, then reading the explanations and really studying the "why" for each wrong answer) and then a full practice exam each weekend. I honestly benefitted the most from practicing the writing, and reading the writing samples that were scored 5 and 6. And the math was a helpful refresher since I hadn't done a lot of that in like a decade! The prep for the verbal section was just okay. It was helpful to get prepared for the type of questions and the speed I'd have to do the readings and such. But it's hard to "study" things like reading analysis and there are just way too many vocab words to ever learn them all.

Thanks so much!! I will take that into account while I study for the next few weeks!

Also for what it's worth, I read on some GRE prep site that if you are stumped on a vocab question and have to guess, guess the most 'obscure' sounding word.

You have an awesome application! I was also waitlisted at TSU. I'm interviewing at UTHSC next month. How did the interview process go? Which program are you leaning towards?
