harvard acceptances?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
How come everyone gets way more excited about Harvard than Hopkins? Would anyone here go to Hopkins over Harvard (if of course you hit the double lottery) and financial aid turns out to be about the same?

The two schools are very different. Harvard is strictly pass/fail- Hopkins isn't. Harvard has started a program where students do all their clinical rotations in the same hospital, so that they get a chance to build contacts and don't have to reacclimatize every time they switch rotations. Hopkins' area of Baltimore is radically different from Harvard's area of Boston. The weather near the Chesapeake Bay is different from the weather in New England. New England clam chowder is WAY better than maryland crab soup. The sports teams are... I'm not going to go there (the Baltimore Orioles are the only sports team that I actively favor and make even a vain attempt to follow, but that's because I like to root for teams that don't win all the time... poor Orioles). There are lots of other differences. Most importantly.... Harvard interviewed me. Hopkins didn't.

The threads are a little deceiving though. Hopkins is rolling, so different people have been getting excited about Hopkins at different periods during this application cycle. They get excited, then hear from the school, then leave the thread, and a new interviewee group appears on the thread. No one has heard from Harvard yet, so everyone who interviewed there is posting here now.

Just curious but has anyone tried the cached financial aid page that still accepts the social security number and AMCAS ID??? I wonder if it would give different results than the new page? Just a thought...

Hey hey guys! You all seem like such a nice bunch, and I wanted to say hi. May all those who interviewed for whom HMS is the top choice be admitted! Time seems to have slowed down to a crawl over the past week, don't you think? :0). Can someone just put me into a f*****g induced coma already and wake me when my letter has arrived?

What will you do to celebrate ?
What will you do to mourn ?

To celebrate: I will probably go to dinner with some friends and celebrate getting my first choice.

To mourn: I will probably go to dinner with some friends and celebrate getting my second choice.

Life goes on...

To celebrate: victory nap, followed by fancy food at a restaurant. Buy myself some fancy, overpriced chocolates (this seems appropriate). I will slowly start calling friends and family to get the news out, taking ample time to bask in the acceptance.

To mourn: sad nap, followed by take-out food. Console myself with some snacks from my chocolate war chest (the big crate where I keep various kinds of chocolate and snacks). I will VERY slowly start calling friends and family to get the news out, moving through the misery at my own pace.

actually, looks like this is the only way your email would work for getting a pin sent to you:
If you are a returning student who entered HMS prior to September 2004, your E-mail Addres is your official Harvard email account. You can receive your PIN by e-mail! Enter your E-mail Address in the "Student ID" field and click on the "Receive PIN by E-mail" link at the bottom of the "Log In" section. Your PIN will be sent to your HMS e-mail address right away.

It doesn't say that email comment for incoming students or returning students after 2004. also, i feel like it probably won't become active until monday, the 17th since it does specify a date. finally, it specifically says: If you have not yet been admitted to Harvard Medical School, you cannot access this system.

I feel like they are talking right to me. Ok, enough, i'm not checking again until someone says they're in. Boredom and curiousity got the best of me.

Just for the record, you effectively stole my screenname...but it's ok, because you seem to be pulling your weight. 🙂

Good call on March 17th. Keep it up!

crap...and i thought i was so creative! 😡 now i want to change mine. boo.

agreed by the way that harvard totally beats hopkins because hopkins has ignored me since the day I submitted my secondary back in like july. oh well! wonder when i should expect their rejection letter...

I interviewed at both the big H's...I expected the people at Harvard to be snooty (nothing could be further from the truth), and the people at Hopkins to be hyper-competitive (nothing could be further from the truth). Both were great...I suspect Hopkins will give you a better education, but then again it's in Baltimore and it may be a little bit hyper-competitive.

If I'm lucky enough to get accepted into both (yeah right!)...I don't know.

I think it's always hard to see the competitiveness of the student body on an interview visit, after all they're not competing with you for anything. I have a friend at Hopkins who said that all the students were super friendly at first, and then as the classes got rolling and tests were looming all the competitiveness came out and now it's a bit brutal. Just something to consider I guess.

Hahahaha that's funny. That's right, eat the pain away. I'll do the same!
🙂

To celebrate: Vacation for a month somewhere in Africa or South America

To mourn: why should I mourn? I'm glad I got into very good schools so far. I couldn't have been happier! I'm in a good position. 🙂

Life is good all the time; we've got to be optimistic. If we don't get in Harvard, does that mean, we couldn't be the best doctors we hope to be? Of course not. We'll study hard to excel at all levels at the school we end up in. At the end of 4,5 or 8years, we will be DOCTORS!

This is the most logical post I've read in a long time. I couldn't agree with you more👍 Thank you for your admirable optimisim!! Congrats on your fantastic acceptances, too! 😀

I don't think you'll be able to log in before monday, because if you read the directions...it says that the usename is your email address as of March 17, 2008. I think this sort of implies that Monday is when they will put the accepted applicants' information in the database.

Just a thought.

Do you think all of the information we have applies to HST as well?

I just got "Your email address is unknown. PIN not sent. Contact your financial aid office." when I put in my pin number and clicked "Receive PIN by e-mail".

But then I put in a fake social security number and got the same message.

So don't get excited.

And that's my 1000th post. How depressing.

-Edit-

Oh wait, they changed the entire login procedure. Now you put in your e-mail address as your login and not your social.

Tricky.

Yeah, Harvard's keeping us all on our toes! As a couple people have mentioned, the webpage says that you should use your email address that is current with them as of March 17th. So, it looks like St. Patrick's Day might be Monday Bloody Monday for logging in. Here's hoping St. Patrick's Day brings luck.

Can't wait. How will you make it through the weekend?

I submitted my secondary to Hopkins about that same time. I never heard anything from them, so I eventually called about a month and a half ago. They told me I was not going to be invited to interview. Not really sure why they wouldn't just send me a frickin' letter telling me that. Anyways, you might want to call just to see what they say.

I remember at the HST interview I was told that the decision for HST and NP will be sent on the same piece of paper in the acceptance letter.

Same here. This is why I would rather go to Harvard than Hopkins🙄

Anyways, so far I am not going to any of them, but you never know.. Monday might change everything... for better or for worse

I think I'm going to the MoMa. One of my friends is trying to convince me to do this dance workshop but... um.... I'm not much of a dancer.

Also, there's a very real chance that nothing will happen on Monday- they may have finally figured out how to close the financial aid loophole.

I don't seem to see an answer to this ... does Harvard use the big envelope/small envelope method of communicating admissions decisions?

I remember at my January interview's morning orientation that they told us big envelope = good news, small envelope = decline or waitlist.

I want big envelopes... I like big envelopes... Give me some big envelopes.....GOD I WANT BIG ENVELOPES.....BIG ENVELOPES......BIG ENVELOPES.....BIG ENVELOPES......BIG ENVE......BIG EN....BIG...B........

I am going crazy :scared:

It'll be okay! No matter what happens, you will be fine. You're going to be a doctor.

(last year's thread said that the envelopes are large and yellow- not manilla, YELLOW. Why Yellow? WHO KNOWS????)

I just want my rejection letter already; I hate waiting

This is one of the only times that I have really felt this song from Pink Floyd:

Day after day, love turns grey
Like the skin of a dying man.
Night after night, we pretend its all right
But I have grown older and
You have grown colder and
Nothing is very much fun any more.
And I can feel one of my turns coming on.
I feel cold as a razor blade,
Tight as a tourniquet,
Dry as a funeral drum.

Didn't HST say they would call the people who were accepted? Does anyone know when that would happen?

Don't know when it will happen, but it looks like that's what they did last year--just a day before the first HST/NP letters were received in the mail. Assuming anything goes like it did last year, and decisions will be mailed at the end of this coming week as someone on this thread claimed, then the calls will probably go out in the middle of this week. But who really knows?

oh my gosh! i just want to know... rejected by hopkins and awaiting harvard. got into u of chicago so happy there, but rejection hurts, and anticipation pain just keeps on going (pessimistic day...) 😱

Passin the time with super smash bros brawl - who else is with meee 🙂

I hope that we go to the same school so that we can procrastinate by playing SSB

I have a Playstation 2, but my AV cable doesn't work anymore. I should go buy a new one. I'm thinking of getting a Wii, but.... the Wii (and the various games that I'd want to buy) cost as much as a nice physical diagnosis kit. Hmmmm... Which is more useful for my future medical career, an ophthalmoscope or the Trauma Center games?

I was gone for a few days and was hoping to get back to an exploded Harvard thread. Apparently the tension is as high as ever.

Does anyone feel like they genuinely knocked their interview out of the park? I don't feel like mine went well at all.

Haha...far from it. HST criticized my science-heavy background, and my MD/PhD interviewer (just an assistant professor) said my collaborator (who is an Academy of Science member and past director of American Cancer Society) can't design research experiments to test his hypothesis. Needless to say, I didn't get a good impression of the place, and won't be anticipating any acceptances.

I felt like my interview went really well. The first one was good but not stellar, but my second one I felt was awesome. Who knows?!

Same here. My first interview was decent, but I keep going back and wishing that I'd done it differently. There was a point a few weeks ago where I was staying up late panicking about all the mistakes I made... I'm mostly over that. My second interview, on the other hand, was amazing. I had SO MUCH FUN. I loved talking to the faculty member and he seemed to really, really, really like me... He even gave me a hug after the interview.

That's what I thought about my second Cornell interviewer (minus the hug). Turns out, that particular interviewer lavishes praises on everyone just to test how they respond. I was waitlisted. My Columbia interviewer also seemed quite impressed with me. Another waitlist.

Yeah, I'm starting to understand the point about not being able to tell how well you did in an interview.

Edit: I thought my first interview (with the more important person) went really well, and the second one went ok (the only thing is I'm worried he may have thought I'm xenophobic because we were talking about how med schools work in other countries and I mentioned how odd "foreigners" find it when I tell them that I majored in the humanities and so on and so forth. Does foreigners have a necessarily xenophobic connotation? I hope not, didn't mean it AT ALL)

My interviews with NP were two of my best all cycle, the first interviewer had an in-depth discussion with me about a disease and told me that I explained it better than many residents could, and my second interviewer laughed so hard at a joke I made that she couldn't stop snorting (I hope she wasn't laughing at me lol). But I'm also wary of interpreting any meaning from it, don't want to get my hopes up. Both my interviewers are on my deciding committees (one on a subcommittee and one on the main committee), so I'm praying that it will help somewhat.

The HST interview for me was pretty lukewarm, the student interviewer kept trying to think of tricky/thoughtful questions to ask rather than to carry on a normal conversation. So I'm not really too hopeful about that...

Only another week left... I hope we all get in and can play video games together in our free time 😀

My first interview went really well, but my second one didn't. I hope I'm not outright rejected.
