harvard acceptances?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Same failed login message for me too. I was pretty anxious this morning when I couldn't check in on this thread to see if anyone had gotten a different message... good thing the forums are back up 🙂

ok so that was as stupid idea (the moment of silence). but yea, same message for me...

There is no point to check the finaid website since the finaid application won't be available until March 22. (This date was provided in the finaid website)

SnoPearl, I met you at the airport after my Michigan interview...I was the one who had a major flight/personal crisis and ended up taking the last flight back to Philly. Where are you leaning towards at this point? Are you still considering Michigan?

I hope Harvard works out for you! I'm anxious to get out of Boston, so I'm a bit indifferent about Harvard at the moment, but it would be nice to hear something soon.

Well, I'm glad they took the webpage down. People were going crazy. Looks like it will be up again in ~5 days, which is just what happened last year from 3/15 to 3/21. Brace yourselves, kids. End of this week, beginning of next week, it'll all be over!

:hardy:

Hey peeps, does anyone have a clue about whether they send decisions to the preferred address or the permanent address? I would prefer to keep this one away from my parents 🙂.

I'm pretty sure it goes to the preferred address.

In lieu of the financial aid page, I have been logging into my insurance company's website to track the claim for a recent doctor's visit. The claim is was filed in their system today and is currently processing :scared:. Here's hoping my copay won't be too bad.

Has anyone else developed quirky habits while waiting to hear back from Harvard? I've had my glossy red HMS folder next to my pillow since... the day I got back from the interview.

I've been checking those as well, in addition to democracynow.org (only the best source of independent media ever!).

When I'm in the mood and when nobody's around, I wear the HMS Guest name tag they gave us on Interview Day and pretend it says HMS Student. 😛

Heh.

Does this mean decisions should be received by Saturday??

I assumed it meant that is when decisions would be mailed by (mirroring what we've heard before).

I wonder if the fin aid office gets some kind of perverse pleasure by being able to inform students of their admissions status before the admissions office?

Oh, and since they're unlikely to be working on saturday, I'm guessing the website goes live, at the very latest, by 5pm on friday.

Last year, they took the site down with a message indicating that it would reopen on 3/21. The site was up around 4pm on 3/21.

My guess: rejections might start trickling in by the end of the week. Acceptances won't come until next week, probably towards the middle. I am not enjoying this game, not one bit.

yeah i bring that pen with me to bars and clubs...

and also to poker games, for when i've already offered up my house and car

Wow looks like there was even more drama last year because some folks got phone calls and some didn't, but those without phone calls were also accepted. It boggles my mind.

I lost my pen around New Year's. It's a bad omen, I just know it 🙁

Hey all- looks like the financial aid website actually DID come up around 4pm on 3/21 last year. So, we should probably expect to be able to log in around Monday.

So it sounds like (from last year) login failed in the beginning doesn't mean you aren't on the WL...

True, I don't know why they would pick Saturday. Still, I'm not putting any hope in Friday, either. It's odd that the usual signs that were seen last year (MD/PhD phone calls, etc.) are not being observed this year as far as this thread is concerned.

you would make a great study buddy...or should I say "study bunny"? (chuckles to self...silence)

seriously, i would really like to study for a test with you. any test, it doesn't matter. (that's not a come-on).

anyway, your list is pretty thorough. i might add that only harvard undergrads got NP calls from dr. cohen. isn't that right?

not sure if this matters at all guys, but just in case:

got my pre-interview rejection letter yesterday. so they are at least starting to mail some early stuff out

good luck!!

sorry to hear the news. you'll be an outstanding physician wherever you go! good luck to the rest of you (myself included 😛)! :luck:

There has just been a Harvard MD/PhD acceptance...doomsday is here.

lol not me, another person in MD/PhD forums, phone call today

Ooooh, so I'll get my rejection letter within the week? EXCITING!

I cant wait to get my rejection letter in the mail. It will bring some much needed closure to an application process i began working on almost 12 months ago 😱

lol not me, another person in MD/PhD forums, phone call today

it's today?! we need to hear of a few more phone calls so we know if the rest of us are rejected or not! (i'm np)

Hmm, well don't get too excited guys...

Harvard has 10-12 MD/PhD slots each year, and usually 1-2 are deferred matriculations. That leaves about 10 slots. How the MD/PhD acceptances work is that 10 are accepted initially, and as people withdraw, they go down the waitlist. They will never offer more than 10 MD/PhD acceptances at any one time.

Yes, it was mildly depressing to realize on my interview day that they couldn't accept even the number of applicants who were currently in the room to the program. It is small.

Which I absolutely don't understand. Harvard's endowment is almost 10x of the second highest institution, but yet they refuse to use any money. Harvard can easily become the largest MSTP program in the country, bigger than WashU and Penn combined...

Part of the reason there is so much money but it doesn't seem to get used the way people think it should is because (1) MSTP is funded solely by NIH grants and those are limited, and (2) a large portion of endowment money comes from wealthy benefactors and generous alumni, and those gifts generally come with stipulations on how they are to be spent.

Maybe they feel indignant about not having more spots from the NIH?

Why I don't have any pens????!!! Maybe they did not give it to me deliberately! Maybe they didn't like me... God I want my rejection letter NOW.. Are there any other penless people here?

Neither WashU or Penn have all their slots funded by NIH; both schools make an investment and fund more positions and just decide to call them all MSTP for fairness. And while it is true that endowment money comes with stipulations, it doesn't seem reasonable that the 35 billion dollar endowment can't be touched at all for funding MD/PhD slots. Hell, even the interest from that principle is more than enough to give everybody free tuition every year and still make a profit.

Heh, thanks! I'm totally going to be the person who emails the class with study guides the night before a test (you know, the fabled "super nice classmate" that all med students mention as evidence of how non-competitive their school is). Mind telling the HMS admissions office about what an awesome study buddy I would be? Well, it probably won't matter, cause it seems like all the decisions have already been made (also- I interviewed back in November, so they probably decided my fate a long time ago).

There was one person from a California state school that got a phone call... but only a few accepted people received phone calls (most of the ones that did were Harvard undergrads). If people start posting about phone calls, there's NO reason to panic if you haven't gotten one.

I actually would like to add that the first pre-interview rejection arrived on 3/10 last year. Looks like the various decisions are all coming at once this year. Decisions are quickly approaching :scared:

I called a while ago asking when would the decisions arrive since I will be out of town by the time they get here and needed somebody to check my mail, and they told me "at the lasted by the third week of March" so I think technically we should expect acceptances by Friday too. By the way, any URMs here?

URM here. How's it going?

Wow this small flurry of activity is suddenly making me scared - and thank god there's no financial aid page to fuss over right now. I guess this thread is just about to explode soon...

yea, every time i refresh, there's a new post.

i guess i'd like to take the time now to propose a "moment of activity" (because my "moment of silence" didn't work)

here's to our careers as physicians, whether or not we begin them at hms...

I'll second that! Good luck to all :luck:

I hope that, in four (or five, seven, eight, whatever) years we all get our first choice in the match!

this thread makes me giddy!!! i wish i could stay at home chained to the mailbox, but my horrid senior thesis dictates otherwise...

it doesn't end here does it?...

at least for match, we'll know for sure that it comes out on march 20th. sigh.
