Is there such a thing as waitlist for Harvard?

I've heard that there is, but that it doesn't have very many people on it... I don't remember where I heard that, or therefore how reliable it is, though. Sorry about your rejection 🙁 how disappointing. Thanks, though, to you and everyone else keeping the SDNers who haven't heard yet updated. I really hope you do wind up at another "fine" school that makes you happy!

Yes. It's pretty small and has slow/little movement, however, since relatively few people turn down a Harvard acceptance.

I believe that H has somewhat of a weird waitlist. They accept very distinct people, but for everyone they accept they will put another person on the waitlist for that particular individual. So if they accept an artist/researcher/type of applicant they will waitlist an individual with similar characteristics so there class comes out the way they planned.

My buddy told me this a while back.

I know a handful of students that turned down Harvard to go to places like UCSF, UCLA, and YAle probably more so to stay with their families and still go to great schools.

I for one have my heart on staying in nyc, so if I get accepted to H, I will probably have a difficult time making a choice.

did anyone happen to call today to confirm that they have sent out acceptances today?

good luck everyone!

anyone else willing to share what it would take to say no to harvard?

Only an acceptance to Yale... That place is my academic soulmate.

My parents say no word in California. Anyone in CA hear today?

Denied in NYC. Good luck to those still waiting!

Are these letters being sent to preferred (school?) addresses or home (permanent) addresses?

I'm not in school, so mine are the same.

I'm thinking preferred...I thought that was the whole point of putting down a preferred address for mailings.

Rejected in San Diego. Damn.

preferred

For those fellow people like me who got rejected,
what were your MCAT scores? Mine was 31...

Jeez, those rejections are traveling fast. A two-day turnaround for Boston to SD?

Hi Carlene,

I agree that it is ethical for a person to go into the financial aid website if their intentions are to apply for financial aid alone. However, I argue that it is unethical and morally questionable if one's intentions are to enter the website for the purpose of finding out their application status prior to receiving the letter. Although hacking requires a different method of intrusion, I believe that the those who have the intent of entering the financial aid website with the purpose of finding their status are also intruding on Harvard's privacy. Both are a form of intrusion and for that reason, it is unethical. Harvard admissions would agree that such an action is intrusive, which is why they changed their financial aid page for this year. I strongly discourage people from attempting to use alternate means of finding out their status other than the letter you will all receive. We, as doctors, must respect the privacy and policy of institutions and individuals alike, which means avoiding any means of intrusion without consent...I leave the definition of consent to Michael Sandel, whose class you might have taken during your undegrad years 🙂 Anyways, hope you are enjoying the muggy weather!

I consider myself a pretty ethical person, but people here are really wound up a bit *too* tight.

Yea, I'm wondering how mail is traveling that fast. Is the mail first-class?

Are all these rejections only post-interview rejections, or all rejections in general?

With all the rejections that have hit SDN today, including the west coast, I'm wondering if we should be cautiously optimistic if we haven't received anything yet. Considering the large proportion of people following this thread who have been rejected at this point, then considering that people on SDN tend to fare better than the average applicant, I would assume that at least half of all interviewees have been rejected at this point. So if you haven't gotten any mail yet, your odds have probably doubled. It sounds like no waitlists have arrived yet, but it sounds like Harvard waitlists very few people so that might be a small factor at this point. I am definitely thinking that no news is a very good thing at this point. However, I will be sweating bullets tomorrow at the mailbox, even though I'm much closer than the west coast, just because it's entirely possible that a letter could have taken an extra day to get through my campus mail system. What about postmarks? Are they all 3/10 so far? I wonder if waitlists will be next, followed by acceptances.

I definitely think the idea of Harvard to send bad news first is a good idea though because the "I hope I don't have mail from Harvard today!" feeling is much easier to deal with than the "I hope I have mail from school X!" feeling that you get when you know acceptances went out first. This way, you know that no news is good news, but at least if you do get bad news, you have resolution and finality instead of just an empty mailbox and a bad feeling that your waitlist/rejection is coming in a few days. I would definitely rather get bad news than get no news and know that it means bad news is coming but still have to hope that it might be good news.

And if it seems like I'm rambling, I also checked my mailbox 6 times today.

Or we could be getting the letters tomorrow. I think Wednesday is a good day to be optimistic.

Haha your post sounds exactly like what I would've written. I only checked my mailbox 5 times today though. I'm gonna be so pissed if I get a false sense of security from not receiving anything today only to discover tomorrow that my rejection letter was sitting in some bin in my campus mail system all along! Man I will be so pissed!! That's why I'm telling myself now that I probably didn't get in, sometimes a hint of hope is more detrimental on the psyche than knowing that you have no hope at all.

Good luck to all those still waiting. I'm still sad to be rejected by my first choice, but getting used to the idea that I'll be going to a great school regardless 🙂

To answer some questions to ease some fears, my letter was postmarked March 10th, first class 39 cent mail. I'm in Michigan. It's a small, thin envelope with just one page.

May large envelopes come your way tomorrow!

Hey guys, I'm new to this forum thingy so hopefully this works. My pre-med tutor at Harvard tells me that everyone gets small letters, even those who are accepted. So please read the mail before you throw it away. Also, another story is that a guy who applied to both MD and md/phd received a rejection letter last year. He almost threw it away but on the last line it said that while he was rejected from md/phd he got md. So make sure you guys read the letters and don't be worried if you get a small letter! Good luck, rooting for you all!

You can add me to the pity party. Rejection. NC. Stats in link below. Best of luck.

You guys, I can't even bring myself to check my mail because I'm afraid of finding that little envelope. I need to get some guts, seriously.

This thread has been fun. I felt like we've really bonded. Through the laughs. The tears. The nervousness and the heartbreak. The blind and pure hope, the agonizing defeat...
I am ashamed that I was ever THIS connected to any one school. But its time to move on:

REJECTION, Colorado.

JayQuah has left the building.

Not yet time for optimism.

If you follow the Duke or Columbia acceptance threads, it took many people 4+ days to hear. (It took me 5 days to hear from Duke.)

I suggest people go and have fun tonight because it may be a bit of a rough day tomorrow.

Good luck to everyone. :luck:

Edit: And thank you to all the people who posted their results.

What do you say we meet half-way between CO and CA in Vegas for some good wholesome rejection-get-****ed-up time? Eh JayQuah? Eh?

This is getting out of hand now. I'm looking at all the people who are getting rejected and all the incredible profiles and fearing the worst. Who else on this thread is still waiting for a decision?

When I checked my mail today, looked in the box, saw one thin envelope. I thought I saw a seal near the return address, and thought, got my H rejection too. Turns out I'm now on UConn's waitlist. Much less consequential.

I'm waiting, and I can assure you that my numbers are not great. I'm freaking.

I'm waiting for a rejection. This is like ruthless slaughtering of innocent civilians.. it's brutal to watch! Just finish me goddamnit, send me the rejection letter now and get it over with.

ok, at least now if (more like when) i get a rejection, i know i am in the company of some stellar SDN applicants and great future doctors. awww...

I know what you mean. It will be comforting to see some acceptances tomorrow.

I threw my Harvard folder away today. It was too shiny anyway.

Who's waiting on Yale?

what i think is funny,

is that all of you are like "so sorry 🙁 🙁 🙁 "

but are probably thinking

that increases my chance of acceptance from X/Y to X/(Y-1)

this process is dehumanizing.

as someone who is not in the process, and therefore not subject to the whims of envy, i can say good luck to all with no biases whatsoever.

jaded and yours,
Z

yeah, there is definitely no reason to be too optimistic if you're still alive. it seems to me that, although admittedly a biased sample, the people waiting to hear post-interview are about 50%/50% in terms of hearing. Considering around 1 out of 5 get accepted, I think we're still in for some more bad news tomorrow. SDN may be a biased sample but we're not that good.

i was so pissed my mailman came super early today. Another day of agonzing tomorrow 👎

Yeah, I think you're right seventh. Not only that, but we really aren't all that great by Harvard standards. I mean if this group was applying at a state school, we probably have a 90% success rate, but at Harvard, we are probably not more than slightly above the average Harvard applicant at best. We might very well be an average sample. I'm definitely afraid of checking my mail tomorrow, especially because I have a feeling my campus mail might be delayed by a day. If it doesn't come tomorrow, though, I'm hopeful of at least a waitlist.

Oh, who out there sent an update/letter of interest after their interview? I was debating it but was afraid it wasn't looked upon favorably. I'm second guessing everything now.

Me.

Seriously though, I feel wierdly close to some of you guys who have been around since the beginning of this cycle or so with me. JayQuah, Bluntman, KevinZ, Princess, SPB, DeadOrAlive, CareBear, Dopamine, SeventhSon, etc. I've been following these guys for a year or so now. All people I was so amazed and starstruck by. Now look! Half of them gone down! No!!!

I find it crazy that I've now been rejected, yet I'm still rooting for all of you who haven't received your letters yet- so I'm still checking the thread! I think I've completely lost it - just amazing what they do to us.

There's a strange dynamic to this thread because I don't think that anyone is hoping the other people get rejected so that we will have a better chance. And the people who get rejected aren't really bitter because they already have great acceptances. I know I won't be bitter tomorrow, and I'll be rooting for everyone else either way. I think I'll just be kind of sad if it's not longer a possibility.

I think we all understand how emotional and stressful this process is and don't wish the pain of rejection on anyone. My stomache drops whenever I see someone post a rejection because I know exactly how they feel.

i stand corrected. sometimes tribalism and camaraderie developed under times of "traumatic stress" can override the cruel fact of statistics.

go SDN.

I think this thread has made me worry much more than if I hadn't come across it at all!
